Since its inception, the motorcycle has lent itself to the needs of riders determined to ride them in every possible environment with a never-ending thirst for speed and style. Originating on the city streets and country back roads in England in the 1960s, the cafe racer has endured as a timeless expression of motorcycle customization, joining the ranks of iconic genres like board track racers, choppers and bobbers. The stripped-down and hopped-up British cafe racers zooming between pubs were purpose-built for optimizing speed and handling. Still, the minimalist style that resulted has echoed in every decade since to become a staple genre in motorcycle culture. The cafe racer movement was so significant upon its arrival that many of the world’s top manufacturers began rolling out production models into their lineups by the 1970s.
One such iconic machine was the brainchild of a young Willie G. Davidson of the Harley-Davidson Motor Company, who pulled inspiration from the vibrant cafe racer culture in the U.K. to produce his own version with a distinctly American DNA. Using Harley-Davidson’s existing XLCH Sportster as a foundation, Davidson and his team unveiled the XLCR (cafe racer) in 1977, a model which it is safe to say raised quite a few eyebrows. At its heart was a 61 CI (1000cc) OHV V-twin and 4-speed gearbox built in-unit, which could push the hefty 550-pound machine to a top speed of 115 MPH.
Where its British and Italian counterparts drew from a heritage of Grand Prix racing to inspire their styling, the XLCR married its heritage of flat track racing and the increasingly popular street tracker style to produce a menacing, all-black beast of a motorcycle. A flat track fuel tank, ducktail rear section and bikini fairing captured the cafe racer look, while 2-into-1 exhaust, disc brakes and Morris mag wheels completed what was, at the time, the fastest Harley-Davidson on the market. Displayed in a private collection for 24 years and accompanied by its owner’s manual, original service manual, a Harley-Davidson parts catalog and the original Harley-Davidson keys, this incredibly original 1977 Harley-Davidson XLCR has turned over less than 400 miles, which—given its limited overall production and increasing collectability—makes this American cafe racer an extremely rare and classic motorcycle.

We're going to do this and modify Harley-Davidsons and we'll have certain models and they will have the speed on them so people will see what it is and it's going to be labeled right there and people think it's the motor and all sorts of things and we might take the zero out and people say it's a good idea but it's like 295 how you going to know if you put a five it would be 205 so really we're going to have to do it with the first two numbers like two nine and the last time will have to be a zero so the one we just made will be 30 and it'll be stamped in the motor 301 and people say they made a mistake and it's going to be fun and actually the guy who does the shop is approving and he's going to be one of the shops and it's great and he's got shops all over the place and we really need it and he needs it and he's going to use the label so it'll make some money

This is great I'm going to open the shops too I'm going to start doing it so if it goes 350 miles an hour it's a 35 and I get that too but he says they're going to be certain models they go a certain speed usually the engines with the same horsepower do it and it's not really the engine that you're quoting but you have to try and do the models the same as each other trying to try and do that so it's like bags on count on or just the cow or nothing and it's a different model and so if it goes 370 without the cow and it's a lighter Harley Sportster we want to call it a 37 so it kind of go around and try and get the fastest and that's what he's saying it's awesome this is going to be great and you can change it later to an eight this is what's fun we know how to change the label but we can do that too we'll go out to meet and try and figure it out and then change it to a 38 and if it's faster and it's not going to go that fast and he says it might if you lower it and you put different sprockets and you put a 45 on a Sportster no call except the smaller one like the Bugatti I mean Ducati not good and we can do that too and it'll look like a cafe racer a little and you're inclined forwards it might be a 41 and we'll start doing that and others will want to just Cruise so we are going to have a lot of fun this is what it's fun about it too

i love the aesthetic of cafe racers but i despise their impracticality and just general loudness. that being said, 6 cylinders with twin IDAs is pretty hot.

imagine a modern GL1800 engine with filtered ITBs and fuel injection that revs to a wild 8500rpm with 11:1 comp ratio, but insert it into a stripped down, lengthened wheelbase CBR1000 fireblade chassis and replace the seat with a harley sportster sprung setup.
basically building a 60s porsche lemans racer but as a motorbike that you could theoretically ride cross country with reasonable comfort and still take down a super car in a straight line.
