As with many sports, soccer teams have three uniforms or 'kits' -- home, away, and "third" which you wear when the first two are too similar to the other team's kit. I've often liked AS Roma's third kit best because it usually takes some design risks.
In the half-written football novel I establish that Askazer-Shivadlakia has a relationship to Rome via sport -- many Shivadh are AS Roma fans because their best player had his best years there, and Miranda and Gregory are shown in Roma supporter kit in the prologue.
And I've long established that blue and orange are the Shivadh flag colors, so it makes sense to put Shivadh RFC players in blue and orange kit:
Paolo had seen initial sketches for the designs, but he still craned his neck to see the real thing. The slideshow cycled through images of children and adults in uniforms: one set bright blue, shorts and shirts, with an orange star over the left breast and the royal crest on the right.
So imagine my goddamn surprise when the new Roma third kit jersey leaked yesterday and it's very nearly in spot-on Shivadh colors.
Tumblr media
Did I manifest this.
[ID: A tweet posted yesterday, June 30th, sharing two images of Roma's 2024-25 third kit. The shirts are a saturated blue with yellow-gold stripes down the sides and across the shoulders, and small red triangles under the arms. The Adidas logo is on the right breast with the Roma team logo on the left; below is the logo of the sponsor, Riyadh Season.]
Also I swear I came up with "Shivadh" as a term for a person from Askazer-Shivadlakia before I knew Riyadh Season existed -- they only started sponsoring Roma last year, it's a state-funded sports and entertainment festival in Saudi Arabia.
Anyway, licensed jerseys are stupid expensive, especially when you're also paying postage from Italy, but I might have to spend next month's book royalties on one. I know you can get player names on the back but I'm kind of hoping they issue a version with De Rossi (the new head coach) on it. Otherwise I'll probably get either Pellegrini or Dybala, maybe Bove.

im reading the program for riyadh season 2024 and its fucking insane??????? that's the entertainment festival that the six kings slam is part of btw. there's an exorbitant amount of things on, various sporting events (including football, competitive slapping??, snooker, FUCKING PADEL???), concerts, theme parks, SEVERAL REPLICA "COUNTRIES" (such as USA, France, Italy, Egypt, Iran) (as in these zones have landmarks/experiences that represent these places, like a fake Hollywood and hotdogs for US lol), a zoo, an aquarium, one of those giant ball screens, VR stuff, skiing?????, a man-made lagoon, a firing range??, I could go on for actually all of time bc I only got halfway through the program??????
Like.. I'm all for events and festivals but I baulk at the mere passing thought of the amount of money and resources this event requires. I think if I stepped foot there I would explode immediately from sensory overload. This is eventing at a level I can't BEGIN to conceive of.

Reasons behind the fast economic growth of Saudi Arabia:
The rapid economic growth of Saudi Arabia in 2022, especially being the fastest-growing among G20 economies, can be attributed to several key factors:
- Increased Oil Production and Prices: Saudi Arabia, being one of the world's largest oil producers, benefited significantly from rising global oil prices and increased production levels. The rebound in global demand for oil post-pandemic, combined with geopolitical tensions that disrupted other oil supplies, contributed to higher revenues.
- Economic Reforms Under Vision 2030: The Saudi government’s Vision 2030 initiative aims to diversify the economy away from oil dependency. Reforms under this vision have encouraged growth in non-oil sectors such as tourism, entertainment, real estate, and finance, driving economic expansion.
- Investment in Infrastructure: Major infrastructure projects, including NEOM, the Red Sea Project, and the expansion of Riyadh, have attracted significant investments. These projects are not only boosting construction and related industries but are also creating jobs and stimulating the overall economy.
- Foreign Direct Investment (FDI): Saudi Arabia has seen an increase in FDI due to improved business regulations, economic reforms, and strategic partnerships with global companies. The Kingdom's efforts to create a more business-friendly environment have made it an attractive destination for foreign investors.
- Strong Private Sector Growth: Government initiatives to boost the private sector, including supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs), have contributed to economic growth. Privatization of certain sectors and public-private partnerships have also played a role.
- Expansion of Non-Oil Sectors: Sectors such as tourism, entertainment, and technology have seen rapid growth, fueled by government support and increased consumer spending. Events like the Saudi Seasons, international sporting events, and cultural festivals have attracted visitors and investments.
- Labor Market Reforms: Reforms in the labor market, including Saudization efforts (Nitaqat program) and improved labor laws, have increased workforce participation and productivity, particularly among women and young Saudis.
- Fiscal Prudence and Debt Management: Saudi Arabia has implemented effective fiscal policies, including managing public debt and reducing the budget deficit, which has helped stabilize the economy and promote growth.
- Global Economic Recovery: The global economic recovery post-COVID-19 also played a role, as increased global trade and investment flows positively impacted Saudi Arabia's economy.
These factors combined to create a robust and diversified growth environment, contributing to Saudi Arabia's rapid economic expansion

No one loves Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman more than America’s elite. In recent years, we’ve seen leaders, investors, and celebrities hold out a Saudi exception to human rights in the service of a blurry concept of national interests that requires the U.S. to constantly compromise its values in service of an autocrat. And so MBS has been welcomed back into the establishment fold, and he won over Washington. And now he’s taking a victory lap.
When Saudi Arabia convened a 2018 summit in Riyadh, businesspeople shielded their name tags from view, sheepish about seeking MBS’s money just days after journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s murder. But the stigma has apparently worn off, and big names in finance, tech, media, and entertainment showed up at the Miami edition of Davos in the Desert.
The entire conceit of the conference is that Saudi Arabia can be abstracted from MBS, who is hardly ever mentioned yet remains the unspoken force behind the events. The host, the Future Investment Initiative Institute, a mouthful, is essentially the crown prince’s personal think tank. Session after session offered platitudes and ruminations on the least controversial ideas ever—AI is going to change the world! Climate is important! Sports bring people together! The two-day gathering was titled “On the Edge of a New Frontier,” itself a sort of redundant name. (Isn’t a frontier an edge?)
Yasir Al-Rumayyan, governor of a major sovereign wealth fund that’s currently under Senate investigation, led the proceedings. The Public Investment Fund that Al-Rumayyan runs is the conference’s founding partner and powers its lavish events. That Al-Rumayyan has $70 billion in annual investments to dole out is enough to draw out financial titans, curious entrepreneurs, and former Trump officials.
Jared Kushner, who had grown a beard, was talking about his theory of investing, without noting that MBS’s sovereign wealth funds had reportedly contributed $2 billion to his Affinity Partners. Steve Mnuchin, who similarly snared $1 billion of Saudi funds for his Liberty Strategic Capital, wore a suit and dress sneakers and talked about Israel as a tech hub. Mike Pompeo, in a tie, said that U.S. leadership in the world requires a “stability model” that involves working with “like-minded nations,” though “they’re not all going to be democracies.” Little wonder he rushed U.S. arms to Saudi Arabia as secretary of state as part of an end run around Congress.
Doing business with Saudi Arabia has become so normalized that the CEOs of major corporations and investment firms showed up in droves. There was Accenture’s Julie Sweet, Blackstone’s Stephen Schwarzman, and Thiel Capital’s Jack Selby. David Rubenstein—the billionaire who has played host to President Joe Biden at his Nantucket estate—spoke alongside his daughter Gabrielle. (This year, the Biden administration didn’t send an emissary, but the deputy commerce secretary, Donald Graves, attended in 2021.)
Journalists have kept a distance from Saudi Arabia after the dismemberment of Washington Post columnist Khashoggi, but in Miami the moderators included CNN’s Bianna Golodryga, Fox’s Maria Bartiromo, Bloomberg’s Manus Cranny, and The Wall Street Journal’s Gerard Baker.
MBS has especially used boldfaced names to rehabilitate his standing post-Khashoggi, his crackdown on women activists, and the destructive Yemen war. In Miami, there was a fireside chat with failed Senate candidate Dr. Oz. “Saudi Arabia is, I think, doing some wise investing and shifting mindsets by trying to leapfrog, in some cases, where the West is,” Oz said.
For Gwyneth Paltrow, it was just another fun public event. She spoke about how Goop had “built meaning” for its fans, in conversation with entrepreneur Moj Mahdara, a former adviser to Hillary Clinton. It was particularly incongruous when Paltrow discussed bringing more women to the cap table to fight the patriarchy.
Rob Lowe had some advice for Riyadh’s efforts to break into Hollywood and create its own film industry. “My view is there’s no reason that Saudi shouldn’t be the leader in IP in the same way they’re attempting to be the leader in sports and everything else,” Lowe said. “You need to have someone who can communicate: Why Saudi, why now.”
For all of the glitzy stage management and slick social media branding, at many moments there were fewer than 50 people watching the livestream on YouTube. But what mattered more were the opinion leaders, financiers, and tycoons in the room.
Big Tech was there, too, with Google’s Caroline Yap and Dell’s Michael Dell. Nothing was quite as obsequious as last year’s gathering in Miami when Adam Neumann, Marc Andreessen, and Ben Horowitz—all beneficiaries of Saudi Arabia’s financial largesse—gushed about how MBS is like a “founder,” except “you call him, ‘His Royal Highness.’”

Saudi Arabian GP to stay at Jeddah until 2027 as work on Qiddiya begins | 2023 F1 season
The Saudi Arabian Grand Prix will remain at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit until 2027 while construction of the Qiddiya circuit begins, race promoters have announced. The street circuit in Jeddah was intended to host the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix initially before the race moved to a new venue in Qiddiyah as part of a major entertainment complex under development in the area. The Qiddiya project was announced by crown prince Mohammad bin Salman in July 2017. The vast development, situated 40 kilometres from Riyadh, will cover an area of 334 square kilometres. Saudi Motorsport Company CEO Martin Whitaker says the Jeddah circuit has undergone development in order to allow the venue to continue hosting the race over the next five years. “It’s important that we future proof the Jeddah track and for this reason we have again been working with the FIA and Formula 1 to ensure that we have a circuit that will allow us to stage the sport in Jeddah while work begins on the track in Qiddiya,” said Whitaker. “The Qiddiya automotive centre is being designed to lead the world in Formula 1 circuit design and entertainment. A unique and exciting project, Qiddiya will be a location that everyone will want to visit but right now and in the immediate future the focus and eyes of the world will be on Jeddah and the Red Sea coastline in the month of March.” In order to avoid clashing with the observance of Ramadan, the 2024 edition of the race will be moved to avoid falling between March 10 and April 9th 2024. As previously reported, the Jeddah circuit has undergone modifications to its layout over the off-season to reduce corner speeds in the final sector and improve safety ahead of its next race on March 19th this year, where it will host the second round of the championship. “We have worked closely with Formula 1 and the FIA to make some small changes to the corners, essentially to improve sight-lines for the drivers,” Whitaker explained. “When you’re travelling at 200mph and are just a couple of inches from the ground, having visibility for the next section of the racetrack is critical. So at a number of corners we have moved the barriers back — in some cases as far as five to seven metres — to help with that forward visibility. While the drivers enjoy the challenge of this track, we understand there are certain things we can do to give them more confidence. “While the configuration of the track is exactly the same, we have made slight revisions by tightening up the radius of Turns 21, 22 and 23 — the quick left-right before the back straight. The impact of that will reduce the speed into the corner by around 30-50km/h.” After the 2022 race weekend was marred by a missile attack on a nearby oil plant, Whitaker insists that safety will be assured for the upcoming race weekend now less than two months away. “Safety is of paramount importance to everyone who attends the race – teams, drivers, spectators, guests alike,” said Whitaker. “Discussions with the drivers and team principals has been a primary objective and I would like to think that the strong messages that we and the authorities have communicated have given everyone travelling to Jeddah the assurances that Saudi, like so many of the other races on the F1 calendar, is totally safe and that the hospitality of the Saudi people is foremost in the minds of all visitors.” Advert | Become a RaceFans supporter and go ad-free 2023 F1 season Browse all 2023 F1 season articles via RaceFans - Independent Motorsport Coverage https://www.racefans.net/

چوں کفر از کعبہ خیزد کجا ماند مسلمانی ، حافظ شیرازی
SA BUILDING A NEW RELIGION, NEW ISLAM, AN INNOVATION (BID’AH), WHICH IS FORBIDDEN ACCORDING TO ISLAMIC LAW...
WHEN KUFR (POLYTHEISM) RISES FROM THE HOME OF THE KA’BAH, WHERE DO BOTH ISLAM AND MUSLIMS GO?
Here some reforms implemented by western educated and trained Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.of Saudi Arabia, that will likely have the biggest impact on the conservative kingdom.
1. Women's driving ban lifted
Saudi Arabia shocked many in the kingdom late September when it was announced a long-standing and controversial ban on women driving in the Saudi Arabia would be lifted in 2018.
2. Saudi's first ever Comic Con
Saudi Arabia's first "Comic Con" event - a US-based pop culture movement - was held in February. The three day festival of anime, pop art, video gaming and film-related events was the first of its kind in Saudi Arabia.
3. Stadiums open to Saudi women
In another landmark move, Saudi Arabia announced its decision to allow women to enter sports stadiums for the first time from next year.
The ultra-conservative kingdom - which has some of the world's tightest restrictions on women - has long barred women from sports arenas by strict rules on segregation.
4. Entertainment city planned
Riyadh announced plans to build an 'entertainment city' outside the capital, Riyadh. The 334sq km park will include a safari, sports facilities, theme park and other activities.
Saudi Arabia also announced it will build a series of theme parks in the Kingdom with US-based developer Six Flags involved in the projects.
5. Music concerts allowed
A series of concerts by international and Arab artists were hosted in Saudi Arabia in 2017 including the first exclusively female music concert with a performance from Lebanese singer Hiba Tawaji.
6. Cinema ban lifted
For the first time in 35 years, cinemas in Saudi Arabia opened their doors to the public.
7. Tourist Visas
With promises of new entertainment facilities, theme parks, cinemas, concerts and water parks, and the promotion of Saudi Arabia's historical sites, all that was missing was the ever-elusive tourist visa. The government approved a tourist visa program in October.
8. Mixed-gender national day celebrations
The kingdom's national day in September saw women allowed to enter the Riyadh's main stadium to join in with celebrations for the first time.
The presence of women at the King Fahd Stadium marked a departure from previous celebrations in the Gulf kingdom.
9. Yoga
Fitness enthusiasts in Saudi Arabia can rejoice - yoga is officially back on the program.
The Saudi ministry of trade and industry has officially approved the teaching of yoga and listed it under their sports activities.
10. Saudi Arabia abolishes flogging
Saudi Arabia has abolished flogging as a punishment, the state human rights commission said Saturday, hailing a “major step forward” in the reform program.

Tumblr media
The Jeddah Festival is perhaps the most "tourist-friendly" event on this list. Launched in 2000, this annual festival is now in its 20th year. Its original goal was to attract more visitors to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia's second-largest city and a cultural hub. Over the years, the festival has grown significantly, now featuring an impressive 200 events each year. Highlights include enjoying traditional food, shopping for local crafts, and watching the spectacular fireworks from the city’s scenic waterfront.
Eid Al-Fitr
Tumblr media
Eid al-Fitr is a global Islamic holiday that celebrates the end of Ramadan. Begins with prayers at a mosque, followed by a brief sermon. Afterwards, people visit relatives and friends, and some visit graveyards to pray for loved ones who have passed away. On this day, Muslims dress in their finest clothes, and children receive gifts. Food and drinks are important parts of Eid al-Fitr, a festival that brings people together and celebrates harmony and thanks.
Festival of Eid Al-AdhaThough Muslims celebrate this important festival globally, it holds special significance in Saudi Arabia. Like Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha is observed worldwide, with four-day festivities. It commemorates the moment when Ibrahim was willing to sacrifice his son Ishmael for Allah. Today, many Saudi families celebrate by wearing their best clothes and reciting special prayers. Often, a lamb is sacrificed, and the meat is shared with the community.
Kingdom Unification Day Every year on September 23rd, Saudi Arabia celebrates its National Day, also known as Unification Day. This is the country's only public holiday focused on its secular history, marking the anniversary of the Kingdom's founding in 1932. Traditionally, many Saudis have observed this day with quiet reflection. However, there's a growing trend, especially among younger generations, to express their national pride more openly. This includes singing, dancing in public spaces, and festive car displays with honking horns and waving flags.
Celebrating the Prophet's Birthday: A Look at Eid Milad-un-Nabi
Milad al-Nabi is a celebration of the Prophet Muhammad's birthday. You can easily recognize this festival by the beautiful decorations seen in homes and mosques. Children often recite poems in honour of the Prophet, while adults share stories about his life and accomplishments. The festivities include grand feasts and colourful street processions. The date of Milad al-Nabi changes every year because it follows the Islamic calendar, which is based on the moon.

Saudi Arabia have become a domination host for large sporting events in recent years.
In the past eight years Saudi Arabia have become one of the leading countries for hosting major sporting events. This spans from hosting WWE, Golfing events and F1. By involving themselves which such prestige events it continues to increase their emerging reputation is the sports industry.
Football has particularly had a massive role in Saudi Arabia's strategy, by attracting some of the biggest names in European football, ranging from Neymar Jr, Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo who are all placed under record breaking contracts which are being paid huge sums of money. This large investment has been used to create attraction towards the Saudi Arabian league from football fans worldwide and increase engagement.
One of the biggest transfers in football history had a massive part to play with the uprise of Saudi Arabia, when Ronaldo joined from Manchester United following the termination of his contract. This sparked a lot of media attention towards the project which Saudi Arabia were conducting. Ronaldo stated when he joined "Many clubs tried to sign me, but I gave my word to this club to develop not only the football but other parts of this amazing country." This niche move for the Portuguese star has made his large fan base interested with the upcoming of the Saudi League.
Despite the massive financial backing which the Saudi Pro League holds, there’s still a large population of players who prefer to continue their career in the European leagues to try compete at the highest level possible. How could this change in the future? If the enticing contracts continue to be offered, then the future of  Saudi Pro League football could be exciting.
Along with the sporting evolution that Saudi Arabia has begun, they have also made some major changes towards their culture. Saudi Arabia has also had a stereotype that their culture is extremely strict which was very off-putting to many tourists or potential new citizens. The key features which have been introduced into the Saudi Arabian society have been new entertainment businesses and many festivals, which consist of Jeddah and Riyadh Season.
Another influential change which has begun is the lift of cinemas in 2018, allowing citizens and tourists in public places, this has been Illegal for decades. Another form of entertainment which is on the rise is the performance of elite musicians, such as Justin Bieber, Sean Paul and many more.
Saudi Arabia's transformation isn’t just in place to increase the number of tourists but it’s also to helping them winning hearts and minds.
Soft Power and Sports Washing
First, what is Soft power? Soft power is the ability to influence the preferences, perceptions and behaviours through attraction instead of force. This is typically used to build relationships through culture or economic tools. Soft power is extremely positive for countries businesses to gain influence by appealing to others and making them more willing to align with their goals and values.
Saudi Arabia has had a negative reputation when referring to their human rights record, the issues which are key to this negative perception consist of freedom of expression, gender equality and extremely strong stance against LGBTQ+. The kingdom has a strict passion when it comes to freedom of expression, in the past journalists have faced tough penalties for speaking against the government's rules. A major incident which shocked the world was the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Jamal had previously spoken out about the Saudi government and against Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, his death was suspected to be a move enforced by the Saudi government. This murder started a worldwide negative image on the Saudi human rights record, they originally declined the rumours linking to his death, but eventually admitted that Jamal was killed in a “Rough operation.” This action brought a lot of attention towards the way Saudi deal with heavy critics and the actions they’re willing to take.
Although Saudi Arabia has made some strides towards gender equality, as an example allowing women to drive and encouraging participation in the workforce. This has contributed massively towards the negative reputation which Saudi Arabia are desperate to leave behind. The restrictions which women had to encounter inside of Saudi Arabia’s culture cause intense tension with the kingdom because of their strong passion to reform and make sure women have freedom.
A way which the Kingdom has taken to try take this negative stereotype is through sports washing. A heavy investment in global sports, such as boxing, WWE and football has now made them a very influential stakeholder for these extremely popular sports. One of the biggest takeovers in recent years when Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud gathered a massive stake in Newcastle United for a reported £305 million. This has been a use to normalise the Saudi culture inside of the United Kingdom due to connections and kits which Newcastle have used since this takeover.

This takeover has been nothing less of a success for the Saudi Arabian government and Newcastle United supporters. Since the spectacular purchase of the club, the sleeping giant has seen a spectacular rise the Premier League table, which saw them playing Champions League football last season. This broke the 21-year absence from the most prestidge competition in European football and finally woke up the sleeping giant. The Toon’s success is crucial for Saudi Arabia’s image, which matches the kingdom’s image of the Vision 2030 to place themselves as massive figures in elite sports. Due to Newcastle being in one of the most competitive and historic leagues will show Saudi Arabia’s ability to manage elite sport to a high standard and be a successful investor.
Alongside this successful purchase, Riyadh Season has been producing many achievements and has now expanded worldwide. One of the biggest events was the British fight between Antony Joshua and Daniel Dubois at Wembley stadium. Moments before the fight, the Saudi Arabian national anthem was played. This was extremely controversial and lots of negative feedback was posted on social media following this as many viewers thought the English anthem should've been played first.
Eddie Hearn, who is a extremely popular sports promoter defended the Saudi anthem as he said, "With this event, [it] will mark one year since big-time boxing began in Riyadh Season. I still can't understand the negativity and moans from some people.
"Riyadh Season is a project that takes place in Riyadh. What we saw last week was a passion for sport that His Excellency has.
He then stated, "A man who listened to the fight fans and went above and beyond to deliver for British fight fans who said they wanted to experience a Riyadh Season event."
You can find the interview with Eddie Hearn here.
Another sport which Riyadh Season specialises in is WWE, this has been ongoing since 2018 when Super Showdown and Crown Jewel were taken place inside of Saudi Arabia. This partnership with WWE helps match the Vision 2030’s vision of transforming the Kingdom into an impressive entertainment destination.
It hasn’t just been the destination which has changed but the overall fan experience has developed completely. One of the main things which have been incorporated this season is the fan zones, this is where fans can get involved in many activities such as meet and greets with WWE stars and shops which contain merchandise which has exclusive designs for the Riyadh season and VR WWE experience.

Another positive which Riyadh Season holds is the larger and more advanced venues, the list of improvements in production quality is long but some of the key improvements are the futuristic lighting and audio, which helps the audience engage with the intense sport. Key venues include King Fahd International Stadium with a capacity of 68,752 which is used for hosting major football matches and concerts. Another venue is the Deddah’s King Abdullah Sports City Stadium, which seats 62,345 known for the Saudi Pro League and the Supercoppa Italiana. With the much larger venues it allows more hardcore supporters to attend the events, instead of missing out on tickets being sold out in minutes.

Alongside the major improvement to facilities, Riyadh Season have really focused on bringing special names back to the sport, with fan favourites Roman Reigns, Brock Lesnar and John Cena. These matchups are commonly exclusive to Saudi Events, which adds an extra selling point for the world to view their content and be more invested with future events which Riyadh Season hold.
WWE legend Triple H spoke to Countdown, where he supported the idea about WWE being placed in Saudi Arabia.
We love this partnership here. This all stems from his excellency’s vision to bring the best entertainment from around the world. When we first started here, I think fans were excited, but they didn’t know what to necessarily expect. Over that time, I’ve seen that change exponentially. We had the first women’s match here in Saudi Arabia. It went from us asking, ‘Can we bring women here?’ To them being on billboards all over the city, to the GEA and his excellency calling us and saying, ‘Don’t feel like there’s enough women on this show. Can we have more women put into the show?’
He then stated   It speaks to the progress here in Saudi Arabia, but it speaks to the fan base, and it speaks to the power of WWE as a truly global brand," The link for this interview can be found here.
What will be the peak for Saudi League football?
The rapid rise of Saudi Arabian football is a very niche upcoming which has never been since to this magnitude before. This is a way which Saudi Arabia are sportswashing as the reputation increase of this league will provide more viewers and engagement with the country.
Since the arrival of Cristano Ronaldo, the league has continued to be ruthless with negotiating with the most elite clubs in order to obtain their stars. One of the main attraction points which the Saudi Pro League offers compared to the Premier League is the financial benefit. Neymar Jr who was known to be one of the Elite players playing inside of Europe took the switch, which landed him a reported £1.6 million a week contract at Saudi stars Al-Ahli.
The Saudi government, focusing on their 2030 vision initiative, made strategic investment into the sporting philosophy. This includes creating state-of-the-art stadiums and training facilities. To go along side the heavy investment into strong assets which will help their bid for the 2030 World Cup, all the Saudi Pro League clubs are supported by PIF (Public Investment Fund.) This gives these clubs financial stability and enables players to negotiate competitive player salaries and to attract the elite international stars.
With the impressive funding which is being directed towards the current stars who will continue to improve the quality of the Saudi Pro League, they’re very passionate about improving the future as well. With many new academies being built the aim is to make the Saudi Arabian national team competitive. One of the biggest moments for Saudia Arabia was in the 2022 World Cup, when they defeated Lionel Messi’s Argentina. Additionally, Saudi Arabia is seeking to host major tournaments as they set their sights on the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
One player who moved from the Premier League to Saudi Arabia was Aymeric Laporte, the former French and Manchester City footballer was considered to be an elite level central defender. He completed the £25 million transfer in August 2023.
He spoke to Spanish newspaper AS, where he expressed his opinion on Saudi football and why the rest of the world should keep an eye on it.
“To be honest, I think the Saudi league is not worse than the French league, in my opinion. In Saudi, I think it is more competitive. They can say whatever they want; it is just an opinion. I have played here for one year, so I know what I am talking about. But I think right now we are better than the French league.”

He declared that the switch to football in the Middle East isn’t as easy as people thing, “They have not made it easy for us. In fact, there are many players that are discontented. We are working on it every day, negotiating so to speak, and to see if it improves a little because this is something new for them too, having European players who already have a long career. Maybe they are not used to this and must adapt to a little more seriousness.”
Saudi Arabia’s recent investments and passion towards sports and entertainment show a strategic use of soft power, which is aimed at winning hearts and minds worldwide. Hosting major events such as the Saudi Pro League with players like Cristiano Ronaldo, WWE and boxing is working towards reshaping their international image. This work aligns with sportswashing where popular events and celebrities divert the issues within the culture.
Through Saudi Arabia's movement, they’re trying to express themselves as welcoming and gather a positive image, under Vision 2030. The investment within sports and events presents them as easy to access which is hoped to boost their global influence.
Elite sports have gained a deeper understanding of soft power, as seen with the rapid rise of Saudi Arabia, sport can be used for entertainment but countries have a deeper use for it, by using it as leverage to attract tourism and reshape their international perception.
