that’s what i genuinely believe, not having playing time is the only thing that would drive gavi away from barcelona
i sent you an interview from albert luque in a very long message today so i don’t know if you got it, but in it he said that this quote about gavi that really struck me: “He has a kind of attention deficit disorder. We would go on trips, we had to wear a suit and he would get on the bus in a tracksuit. And he was always late. But football, football, is Gavi's life. And without his life, he has little interest in anything else.“
and it also reminded me of how when gavi joined barça and wasn’t allowed to play because of the fifa ban, he joined a school league so that he could play some competitive games and not just train
Not him diagnosing Gavi with ADHD??? 😭 Also the way everyone talks about how he's always late too like remember that one video where the nt players were asked who's always late and they all said Gavi 😭😭
Getting back to the topic, yeah it's very important to Gavi to play football and do what he loved to do his entire life. He already had to stay away from it for a year because of that cursed injury I don't see him being okay with not playing after all the efforts he put into coming back on top of his love for the sport. Which is why flick needs to fix up because I'll never forgive him if we lose Gavi

open to: femme faces / classmate, childhood friend, rival, t*boo relations welcome & encouraged too!
plot: slutburn (; early '00s boarding school debauchery where no one is to be trusted and everyone is in lust. very much this energy. they're all just trying to have the time of their lives!
muse: theodore 'teddy' hackman, 20, student. flamboyant and devious, can't stand to be called teddy. ( + maxwell, who will appear later! )
blood was roaring in his ears, a high-pitched whine accompanying the rush, threatening to burst his eardrums as he dragged her up the stairs. theodore was furious. he couldn't hear anything, the karaoke crooning and holiday tunes that filled the dormitory blocked out by his rage, only seeing red. he shoved her into the first unoccupied room ahead of him, heavy door slamming at his back. "you conniving little c*nt!" theodore spun on her, eyes sharp, though his lips quirked in the direction of a smirk. this was his own fault. he never should've let it slip that he actually liked max, his dumb-as-rocks tutee, and kept him as a hunky plaything. now his winter break high was being ruined, soiled by a chain email of photos of them hooking up — and she'd sent it out herself! theodore shoved his blackberry in her face. "whose d*ck is this?" oh, but they both knew exactly who she was sucking off. he had to admire her sporting, just a little.

Hi, Kirri! I'm from South America and I'm trying to do a research about australian high school. I would like you to clarify some questions I have about school subjects, like: which ones are optional and which are mandatory? also, if you could send me some reliable websites than i can look up. every website i see says something different, can be very confusing so I decided to ask a australian person. Thank you!!!!
Hi, hey, i've been summoned! Okay, i'll admit to you upfront, it's been a hot minute since I was in high school so my knowledge is partly from personal experience but also what is published online. The school structures and curriculum differs from state to state, so it's no wonder you had trouble finding clear answers. I'll try to explain simply:
Australian high schools run from years 7 to 12. (We actually have 13 school years in total including Kindergarten, or preparatory, which is not numbered.) Students can finish in year 10 if they choose not to complete their senior years and test for university entry. If a student finishes in year 10, they get a Record of School Achievement; if they finish senior studies, they get a certificate of education depending on which state they're in:
NSW - Higher School Certificate (HSC)
VIC - Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)/Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL)
QLD - Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement (QCIA)
SA - South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE)
WA - West Australian Certificate of Education (WACE)
TAS - Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE)
ACT - Australian Capital Territory Senior Secondary Certificate (ACT SSC)
NT - Northern Territory Certificate of Education (NTCE)
The national curriculum has eight compulsory learning areas, which can be categorized into subjects:

Then there are a wide range of electives, which vary greatly depending on region, type of school (state-funded vs private/faith-based) etc. Students in years 9 and 10 typically choose three electives. Here is an example of electives available to a school in NSW.
In addition, many schools offer the opportunity to study a vocational (often trade-based) course in preparation for studies after high school, called TVET (TAFE-delivered Vocational Education and Training). Many of these course results in credits toward school outcomes. I guess you could say that TAFE to Australia is like community college to the US.
The school year is broken up into four 'terms', with dates varying between states (see links at end for a list). A typical school day goes from 8:45am to 3:00pm Monday to Friday, with breaks for recess and lunch between period. A 'period' = one class, which typically runs for 40 minutes.
Upon completing senior studies and final exams, students are given an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank), which they can use to select and be admitted to university. In fact, senior exams have just begun so it's a good time to keep an eye on social media and see how current students are talking about the experience! 'ATAR Day' (when rankings are released) is on December 14, another time to take a look.
Australia also has specialist high schools, such as creative and performing arts schools, intensive English centres (for students with English as a second language), sports schools, and technology schools. All of these must teach the compulsory subjects, but offer the chance to specialize in these areas.
Websites where you can learn more about the Australian curriculum:
Australian Curriculum Version 9.0 Australian Schools Directory
Study Australia
ACARA (for statistics)
TVET
ATAR
Hopefully that will help you! I hope you don't mind that I posted this answer but I thought it might be useful to others as well. If you have any other questions, go ahead and ask and i'll do my best!

Living on my own has taught me that my autism is very much a thing. Not something that can be easily ignored.
Like... I just happen to have allistics as roommates rn (surprise! They make up 98% of the population). And I just don't know how they do it! They get, like, 6 to 7 hours of sleep. They work, take on a full course load for school, engage in a goddamn sport, have a huge social life, party, and drink a LOT, AND they manage to keep on top of chores and cook meals every day. And they fucking shower one to two times a day!
I'm sorry... but where are they finding the energy for this? How can they loudly play board games and get drunk with their partners/friends after doing all that work/socializing so much?
I was straight up almost non-verbal as a child. I had to go to so many different types of therapies to be more functional. Speech therapy, communication and behavioral therapy, therapy for motor skills and tool use, etc. I mean... I sometimes wonder if I'm actually a level one autistic individual like some therapists claim me to be. I sometimes feel more like a level two.
Like, for whatever reason, I'm naturally really good at math. By the time I graduate, I'll pretty much almost have enough courses for a BS in mathematics. I'll also have a good background in programming. My schedule rn is nothing BUT STEM! I'm also relearning the violin pretty quickly for an extracurricular and have been told that I'm naturally pretty darn good at understanding music. Yet... I sometimes feel like I have the emotional regulation and speech patterns of an eight-year-old. One who happens to know "big words." I literally stutter and struggle to string together sentences/describe things. I burn out easily and have tons of executive functioning issues. I struggle to stay on top of a household... and I'm single without kids! I sometimes don't have it in me to take care of myself/do the things I need to do.
Tbh, I don't know how I manage to get employed at places and keep jobs for long periods of time. WITHOUT GETTING FIRED. At my last job, some people were actually super patient with me and admitted, after a long time of working with me, that they knew I was autistic af. I would often just be assigned tasks I was good at. Currently, I interact with some people who also seem to be pretty patient with me. It's a relief, tbh. Because I've also have traumatic experiences from when people don't understand!
It's a different way of life, ig. NTs just have completely different things that make them thrive. Some of them seem to like having busy, loud lives! And that could never be me! I'm pretty happy rn, enjoying a rainy morning in a dark/quiet room.

Learning that a lot of the kids in the Gifted Programs are truly undiagnosed Autistic Kids completely turned around my perspective on how/why they fail once sent to college.
They were never given the additional skills they needed to BE successful as low-support needs ASD kids turned adults. Just told "you're so smart, you'll be fine!" and then they are JUST as shocked when they AREN'T fine.
They needed to be given courses on routine building when it is SOLELY up to them. They needed classes on relationship building with NT peers because being happy and successful in college is literally just routines and networking for us. Like, no really!
They needed to be required to do a club or after school sport to help foster comraderie and social skills!! And then have a dedicated social worker to aid with the anxieties & social faux pas that ensue!
ohhhhh I get it now. the "gifted kid" discourse exists because people see it fundamentally as a sign of Privilege and not as a largely meaningless category that puffs up weird children before setting them up for the same unremarkable lives as everyone else; thus they interpret people going "the educational system gave me false expectations before ultimately abandoning me to the same heartless world as everyone else" as "why am I, The Main Character, not getting everything I ever wanted."

It's Staffordshire Day!
Apparently it's Staffordshire Day on the 1st May! First I've heard of it, but let me celebrate my home county:
This is Staffordshire:
It used to be a whole lot bigger, but they lopped off most of the Black Country and stuck that into the West Midlands in 1974. Bye bye to Walsall and Willenhall and Wolverhampton.
Places:
Stafford: the county town- suffers from traffic problems and has a 19th c replica of an ancient castle. I met my future husband for the very first time in the train station here, but I can't tell you any more about the place since I've never really been. Maybe it's really interesting; maybe I'm missing out.
Stoke-on-Trent: the potteries. You've probably heard of this place. Famous for Wedgewood, Moorcroft, Spode, Royal Doulton, Emma Bridgewater etc, etc. They really dig ceramics in Stoke-on-Trent. Has a football team with a hippo for a mascot (The Potters-hippopotamus-geddit?) and it's really five towns (is it six now?) melded into one city. Parts of the city look like some kind of post-apocalyptic wasteland but it has an excellent museum with some of the Staffordshire Hoard on display. Treat yourself to an oatcake somewhere and mourn the loss of the Leopard pub in Burslem, where great 18th c minds met to plan wonderful engineering works like the Trent and Mersey canal.
Tamworth- it's got a snowdome, it's close to Birmingham and currently has a popular Tiktok jacket potato man to visit. Can't tell you any more as I don't think I've ever actually been to Tamworth... actually that's a lie, since I went ice-skating at the snowdome on a school trip when I was 11.
Burton- they make beer here. Brewing's big business in Burton. It's in the East of the county and again, I can't tell you more since I don't frequent Burton... ever.
Lichfield- historic, founded way back when by religious types and has a cathedral dedicated to St Chad. Known as the 'ladies of the vale', Lichfield cathedral sports not one, not two, but three spires. Bit greedy really, but looks nice. It has a nice spring bank Bower festival every year where it always seems to rain. The potato man here is pretty good... I wonder if he's still in business. Be sure to stop by Erasmus Darwin's house and admire the statue of Samuel Johnson, Lichfield's most famous son. Also make time to go to the park and admire the statue of Capt John Smith of Titanic fame. I don't think he had any connection to Lichfield, but apparently Stoke didn't want the statue so Lichfield took it.
Burntwood- really a collection of former mining villages, there's a lot of houses here and not much else: no history, no culture, nada. A place for people to live and to dream about living somewhere more interesting and where people speak with less awful accents. Or that might've just been me. You will never have heard of this place and will have no reason to ever visit unless your mum still lives there.
Biddulph- small market town. Has Biddulph Grange NT garden. Very nice. Good display of tulips and rhododendrons in the spring. Once heard it described as a 'poor man's Bodnant' but really, we can't all be Bodnant and anyway, there's room for all sorts of gardens in this world.
Leek- another small market town. Nice bookshop. Don't mention roundabouts. People in this town really know how to hold a grudge about roundabouts. Famous for the double sunset each midsummer. Obviously it's usually cloudy and everyone misses the double sunset but it happens nonetheless.
Assorted lovely little villages dotting the place. Lots of nice ones up in the Moorlands.
OTHER STAFFORDSHIRE THINGS!
Staffordshire Bull Terrier- not my kind of dog, I'm afraid, but they're pretty popular.
Staffordshire oat cake: it's an oatmeal pancake filled with warm and savoury stuff. I like cheese and mushroom personally, but I reckon bacon and ham and whatever is most popular. Can also get a sweet filling, like nutella. A North Staffordshire delicacy, the Hairy Bikers made these in Lichfield for their TV show once, much to the confusion of the locals. South Staffordshire holds no truck with oatcakes apparently.
The Staffordshire Hoard: oh, only the largest collection of Anglo-Saxon gold and silver ever found in this country. Imagine being the detectorist who found it, or the farmer whose land it was found on. Whew. I used to work at a riding stables in Hammerwich (where it was discovered). Imagine if I'd gone poking around in fields rather than picking poo in stables... anyway it's bloody impressive stuff.
Alton Towers- you might not have heard of Staffordshire, but you've heard of this place, eh? Our famous theme park. Must peeve the people of Alton off, all that traffic through their lovely little village. Still, I heard they get free entry to the park so... silver lining.

Queensland gay play Fourteen is finally touring Australia

Queensland gay play Fourteen is finally touring Australia

The acclaimed gay coming-of-age play Fourteen is finally returning for a national tour two years after its Brisbane premiere.
Fourteen is the stage adaptation of writer Shannon Molloy’s memoir about growing up gay in Yeppoon in central Queensland in the 1990s. In the play, the gay student struggles to get through a year of self-discovery at his sports-mad, homophobic Catholic school.
Brisbane theatre pros Shake & Stir first adapted the heart-wrenching and uplifting show in 2022. Fourteen got great reviews on its sold-out run during that year’s Brisbane Festival.
Now more Aussies will finally be able to see it as the production goes on a national tour in April.
Fourteen will head to 20 venues across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, the ACT, South Australia, the NT and Tasmania. The stage production will also return to Brisbane in June.
Actor Conor Leach (above) will again play 14-year-old Shannon in the new national run.
Fourteen delicately balances trauma and humour
Shannon Molloy said seeing his story come to life on stage in 2022 was surreal but “a dream come true”.
“To be able to do this once was unbelievable. To hit the road and take it to towns and cities across the country, and coming home to Brisbane, is just incredible,” Shannon said.
He said the response to the premiere run was “very moving” and theatregoers “fell in love” with the world Shake & Stir created.
“I can’t wait for new audiences to come to see it, and for many to come again in Brisbane,” Shannon said.
Shake & Stir Artistic Director Ross Balbuziente described Fourteen as striking “a delicate balance between trauma and tribulation and the humour and heart that ultimately triumphed.”
“We owed it to Shannon – and anybody else whose experiences mirror his – not to shy away from the more triggering moments and challenging themes,” he said.
“But we also wanted to show the absolute power friendship and family can have on a 14-year-old.
“The production stays true to the era of Fourteen featuring plenty of ‘90s pop culture references and a mixtape of bangers from Shania Twain to J.Lo.”

Hard News Story - The Voice
Deputy Mayor of Darebin Council Susanne Newton said she thinks the Darebin Council will be for the Voice to Parliament.
“In my opinion, I support The Voice because I think progress is important,” said Deputy Mayor of Darebin Council Susanne Newton.
“The Darebin Council hasn’t taken a position yet, we’re guided by the Darebin Aboriginal Advisory Committee,” said Ms Newton.
Ms Newton said she’s worried a no-vote combined with indifferent people to Aboriginal voices, will create the perception Australia is a racist country.

Senator of Australia Jacinta Price says if The Voice to Parliament is passed it “will divide her family.”
“Later this year they want to establish a so-called Voice to parliament, this is a really big deal,” said Senator of Australia Jacinta Price in her new campaign with Advance Australia.
“There are already too many culture warriors in this country – in the public service, in our sport, in our schools, and in our workplaces. They’ve come for Australia Day, and they’re coming for more,” said Senator of Australia Jacinta Price in her new campaign with Advance Australia.
She claims that the voice is divisive, dangerous, expensive and “not fair”.

Emily Leon is a mother, and a proud indigenous woman who expresses the need to see a treaty before The Voice.
“I’m a mix of 3 different tribes, the first is Gunnai from Gippsland, then Gunditjmara and the third is Worimi. Unfortunately, I didn’t grow up where my motherland is because our culture was taken away from us. I wasn’t able to speak my mother tongue so I can't really speak to what it's like because I lived more inland,” Emily said.
“I’m proud of my culture, my connection to my motherland and to be a part of the longest-living culture out there,” she said.
“Wherever I lived I grew up with the Aboriginal community there. When I was growing up in Northcote, I was living with the Aboriginal community there, I would say that Darebin is one of the more progressive councils in Melbourne,” she said.
“I embrace my children learning their father's mother tongue, which is Punjabi. I embrace it because at least they have one mother tongue,” Emily said.
Emily said because of the past and present treatment of Aboriginal people, from the history of slavery to mass murder, to babies’ heads being kicked off, she believes Australia is a racist country.
“I’m 30 years old and still when I go to a new job people make comments like, you’re too pretty to be Aboriginal or you don’t look aboriginal because of my light skin,” Emily said.
She said it’s frustrating to deal with people's comments because the information is out there, but people need to be willing to be educated.
“If a darker person says I’m Australian, then people will have questions but if a white person says they’re Australian no one asks questions, racism doesn't stop there it affects all people of colour,” she said.
In the lead up to The Voice to Parliament Emily says she’s concerned that just having a voice won’t be enough because politicians can still do as they please.
“I feel like The Voice is a good thing but there should be a treaty first. That would be important to have and hopefully it will be a steppingstone,” Emily said.
“You hear the public saying no and people in the media saying yes, it's like the people in the media are against the people in the community,” she said.
“I think there are Australian politicians that don’t care about Indigenous voices and opinions. I feel like they're only doing it because the public is watching and they’re getting pressure from indigenous people,” Emily said.
Emily said she worries about the people that don’t keep up with the news such as her mother. She believes the government is only thinking about people who are engaged with the media, not those who are disconnected.

500-Word Reflection
I had no doubt in my mind that The Voice would produce newsworthy stories. When choosing who to contact I decided the more people I reached out to the better. I was intimidated to contact people for the hard news story as they were people in positions of authority, so I had low expectations when it came to receiving replies. The first and only response, I got was luckily enough from the Deputy Mayor of the Darebin council, Susanne Newton. I could not have been more fortunate to have her as an interviewee, because of her position on the council. But also because of her kindness and open-mindedness, she was friendly and willing to answer my questions. My expectations when it came to finding interviewees and receiving responses were realistic, I knew I wasn’t going to get a lot of responses especially when it came to finding someone who was willing to go on the record with an opposing opinion. I had a lot of answers to work with for source 1 of my hard news story and the partner colour story, condensing those two articles down to the most newsworthy parts was my biggest challenge. I have a clear grasp of the structure of a hard news story now, I tried my best to apply them by using as few words as possible when quoting my interviewee for source 1 of the hard news article, avoiding adjectives or convoluted words, having one concept per sentence and making it easy to read and understand. I did my best to put the news first and focus on the facts and be as objective as possible. Learning hard news structure has been a journey of trial and error but one that I've improved on and enjoyed. I struggled when it came to my comprehension of the structure of a soft news article and when it came to writing the partner colour story. I showed it to a friend, and she said it read too much like a hard news story. I read over examples of soft news articles and continued to edit until I was happy with the structure and emotional atmosphere. Finding the most emotional parts of the story was easy, trying to cut down the article was difficult because my interviewee Emily said so many interesting things. I did my best to keep as many of those emotional quotes as I could. I wanted to capture as much of Emily’s personality as possible as she is a passionate and honest person who had a lot of interesting stories and experiences to share. I wanted to create an atmosphere of empathy and a deep dive into her life. I put her personal stories first to create a connection with the audience and set the tone. I followed the structure of a soft news story by using a mixture of longer and shorter sentences, quotes and facts, being descriptive using the 5 W’s & H and making it easy to understand.

HAIKYUU CHARACTERS + THEIR FAVORITE FOOTBALLERS — PART 2
OTHER SCHOOLS
KARASUNO EDITION
in honor (and as an apology) of the world cup ending and my incessant discussion (hysteria) over it on this here anime centered blog, i’ve gathered a few haikyuu babygirls and have assigned them their favorite soccer players. this is a joke but at the same time it’s the most important post i’ve ever made. i’m sorry in advance for this (for the richarlison one especially)
tooru oikawa + neymar jr

like 😭😭😭 there’s no way y’all didn’t see this coming. oikawa LOVES the fun and flair that neymar brings to the pitch, and he loves the energy of the brazilian nt in general. if they were to meet i think the world would explode. HIDE your girlfriends if these two ever became friends. true menace behavior would ensue. the only bad thing messi has done was introduce the two of them
hajime iwaizumi + matt turner (taste)

iwa also clocks me as another gk meat rider. i feel like he really got into soccer in california and has been following certain players ever since and matt turner happens to be one of them. LOVES how gk’s are able to control the game in seconds with one catch, and specifically admires turner’s sound handling and how he barely hesitates. iwa <3 matt turner <3
kotaro bokuto + richarlison de andrade (TASTE)

FIRST OFF. they can both run a train on me 🤍 anyways they’re bird brothers 🦉🐦 !! so many reasons as to why bokuto loves richarlison but he LOVES how richarlison doesn’t give a shit about what other ppl think of him (re: cry more 😢). probably has been following him since his late everton days/early spurs days. richarlison’s backstory also made him cry like a little baby, and he loves how richarlison isn’t afraid to cry on the pitch and in front of his idols (we love men in tune with their emotions). HIMBO CENTRAL with these two 😭 bokuto also lost his goddamn mind at richy’s bicycle kick against serbia (he just like me)
keiji akaashi + son heung-min

this is just another one that makes so much sense to me. such sweet guys and i think akaashi really admires how much sonny loves his sport and his country 😢😢😢 sonny is a big team player and i think akaashi really resonates with that as well. was introduced to sonny through bokuto’s obsession w richarlison 😭 akaashi + bokuto and sonny + richarlison are just goated bestie pairings. when he watches games he’s always so calm until sonny scores and that’s when he jumps from the couch and screams 😭 spurs fan (derogatory)
tetsuro kuroo + paul pogba

the first thing that drew kuroo to pogba was his DRIP. kuroo was so upset to find that he wasn’t on the france nt roster for the world cup and almost didn’t watch any matches bc of it 😭 (fanboy fr). but he did get really excited to see him in the stands during the final aww. genuinely believes that pogba is the best midfielder to grace football (luka modrić is right there kuroo 😒). also believes that the reason france lost in the final was bc they didn’t have pogba in the middle. he just like me

Too Far Gone - Part Forty
Series Masterlist
Warnings: Swearing (use of the word c*nt) mentions of drugs, drinking and therapy, very very brief mention of smut (barely though).
Word Count: 5700
October 1, 2019
October 1
It’s been a little under two weeks since Auston’s Paw Patrol themed birthday party. In that time TMZ broke the news of the incident with the security guard, which resulted in Toronto media and hockey fans going wild. Sports media was calling to ask for interviews, fans were talking about him everywhere – Instagram and Twitter mentions were full - and he had countless meetings with the team, discussing what happened, why it happened, why he told nobody, and what the next steps would be.
Auston was worried about the impact it could have on Tia. It didn’t concern her, she wasn’t even mentioned in the article, but he half expected someone to use the opportunity to drag her name back into the conversation.
Auston knew to not read the comments, but he didn’t know if she did. Last time she told him she hadn’t been reading them, he found out she was lying. He worried about what she would find if she read the comments. He worried about her.
Every morning he would sit on the couch, Taylour a few feet in front of him, watching as Tia poured some coffee into her travel mug. He watched her open the fridge and pull out the salad or whatever food she had prepared and put the container in her lunch bag. She’d put that in her backpack, along with her laptop, a sketchbook, her cloth pencil case and whatever else she needed for the day. He’d watch her grab whatever dishes remained from breakfast and place them in the dishwasher.
He’d watch her walk into her bedroom, and then watched her walk out a few minutes later having swapped out her pyjamas for a simple yet dressy outfit. He listened to her boots click on the floor and watched her open the cupboard and grab the small plastic pill bottle stored on the top shelf. He then watched her put two pills on her tongue and take a sip of her water bottle – the last thing needed in her bag. Auston watched her do this every day. He made sure she did this every day, because he didn’t believe she would do it otherwise.
Tia hated that he watched her like a child, her anxiety was bad enough without someone breathing down her neck. The truth is Tia felt herself changing. Life didn’t seem so daunting and full of darkness. Some days continued to be more of a struggle than others, but overall, she could see a light trying to force its way through.
Tia continued to go to therapy. She thought it would be a lot of the cliché ‘how does that make you feel’ questions, but it was more than that. They talked about school, her friends and their support, Claire and the article. They talked about Thomas and how Tia had yet to see him in person but had spoken to him while Auston was at hockey. They talked about how she felt the need to hide that from Auston, and why she couldn’t communicate openly with him. She found each session becoming easier than the last and was allowing herself to actually talk and tell a complete stranger everything without guilt. Five weeks in and the therapy was working.
“What did you hope to gain by seeing Kylie?” Heidi asks, finally bringing up the one topic Tia had been dreading the most.
“I guess I thought…I don’t know,” Tia stumbles over herself for a moment before exhaling. “An answer I guess.”
“To what question?” Her brows furrow behind the thick frames.
Tia scoffs. “Why she left, why she never came back, if she ever thought about me, did she had any regrets, did she feel that way the entire pregnancy, or was she ever excited by the idea of me?” There are so many other questions Tia had before pulling up to Kylie’s house, but there isn’t enough time for her to name them all.
“Did you get any of those answers from Damion?” Heidi poses yet another question.
“No, if anything I left with more,” Tia’s eyes dart towards the ceiling in an attempt to fight off the tears that are building behind her eyes. Heidi doesn’t say anything right away, she lets Tia take a break, and a few minutes later Tia starts talking again. “Like, why couldn’t she be my mom, but she could be theirs? Why did Damion know about me, how much does she talk about me? Did she try to come back? Did she do what I did - make it to the door only to see me and my dad together, then panicked and ran away? Why can she be their mom but not mine?” Tia repeats the question that has haunted her for weeks. Taking a deep, shaky breath, Tia brings up one of her fingers and wipes away a tear that clings to the corner, stopping it before it has the chance to roll down her cheek.
“Nobody has that answer except for Kylie,” Heidi softly explains, as if Tia didn’t already know that.
“I know, I don’t know if I can see her. I wasn’t ready then,” she admits to herself more than Heidi, “and I’m not ready now.”
“Only you can decide if and when you’re ready,” Heidi reiterates. “And if you’re never ready, that’s okay too.”
“Yeah,” Tia sniffles.
“I want you to write a letter to Kylie.” Tia’s eyes immediately dart over to Heidi, wide with fear. “You don’t have to send it unless you want to. You don’t have to share it with anyone, myself included, but some people find it helpful to write a letter to a person that has hurt them, to get all the thoughts and feelings out on paper.”
“That sounds stupid,” Tia grumbles under her breath, knowing she won’t write that letter.
“You said that about the journal when I first brought it up, you’ve been enjoying that,” Heidi smiles.
“I found out more about what happened from Tamara,” Tia quickly changes the subject.
While Auston was at the rink preparing for the final pre-season game, Tia took Taylour to meet Charlie and Sarah at the park. The two kids played together for over an hour, while the two women sat on the bench, drinking their coffees while keeping an eye on them.
It was the first time Tia had seen Sarah in well over a month. She told her all the recent drama between her and Charlie’s dad, everything that had been going on at the club, how James had asked both Sarah and Abby when Tia would be returning to work, and if they saw her to tell her to answer his texts. Tia shook her head and sighed at that, then told her friend she wasn’t ready to deal with that part of her life yet – something Sarah already knew. That’s when Sarah told her to reach out to Tamara because had mentioned seeing Tia that night.
“And what did Tamara say happened?”
“I showed up really late and the club was pretty quiet at that point. Jake, Evan, Beth, Tamara and I hung out for a bit in the office…doing more drugs.” Tia trails off, hesitant to continue.
“What happened after that?”
“The club closed, and I invited everyone back to my place. We kept partying, passed out for a bit, woke up and partied some more. Thomas came by for a little bit on the Monday – they couldn’t hear what we were saying over the music, but she said there was a lot of yelling. When he left I was upset and started drinking right from the bottle and uh, she tried to talk to me, told me I should slow down.”
“How’d that go?”
“Not well,” Tia laughs dryly. “I yelled at her, told her to shut up or leave, she picked the latter.”
“Outbursts of anger are common with cocaine use,” Heidi explains to her. “It’s not surprising to hear.”
“I know,” Tia shakes her head, still in disbelief. “It’s not me though. I would never speak to someone like that without cause.”
“Drugs change the composition of your brain. What is typically in or out of a person’s character doesn’t apply once drugs or alcohol is used.”
“Yeah,” Tia nods, still struggling to process what happened.
“Do you remember any of that?”
“Bits and pieces,” Tia admits. “I remember being at the club on the Sunday. I remember being in the kitchen, taking lines, eating pizza with everyone. I don’t remember Thomas being there, either of the fights, or anything that would have happened after.” Tia takes a second to mull over the thoughts in her head and clapping her hand against her thigh, she speaks again, “I think Thomas could help me understand what happened.”
“And do you think you’re ready to see him?”
She has spent a lot of time thinking about this, about him. She never knew what happened that night. She had a gut feeling that something happened and that was part of the reason she hasn’t seen him, the other part being the sculpted hockey player who forced himself into her home for the past month. As time went by, her gut feeling on Thomas began to fade and she found herself responding more frequently to his texts, even answered a FaceTime the other day while at school. Every time he asks her out for dinner, coffee or over to his apartment she never agrees, but as the need for an explanation becomes stronger, Tia struggles to constantly say no.
Tia confidently nods. “I think so.”
**
Tia kept what was discussed in therapy to herself. She always did. Her and Auston had fallen into a routine with caring for Taylour and splitting the house work. He tended to do the grocery shopping because he had a car, also because she wasn’t working, and he didn’t want her spending money. She tended to cook because it provided her time away from him, but also because she had limited trust in his abilities – even though he said he had made a few good meals in the summer. He would clean up after dinner, and they both did their own laundry. Whoever was home first picked Taylour up from daycare.
Tia would talk to him about school, she even showed him a couple sketches she had been working on for her final design project. He would tell her about his day and hockey, but they never talked about therapy, or how she was actually doing. It was all very surface level, small talk. The kind of conversation he never saw himself being restricted to with Tia.
Auston didn’t realize it, but he had been isolating himself from everyone else. He would talk to everyone at the rink, but if it wasn’t a team event, Auston wasn’t there. Everyone noticed and they kept trying. Mitch invited him and Taylour over to watch a movie, made sure to tell him Steph would be out so he wouldn’t have to worry about her trying to set him up, Auston found an excuse. Morgan and Fred invited him out for dinner, attempting to carry on the ‘singles club’ despite the fact Fred had been seeing Jessica and Tyler Ennis was in Ottawa, Auston gave a wishy-washy maybe, then found a reason to say no.
“You’re coming tonight, right?” Fred runs his hand through his red hair, damp from the post-workout shower. Tomorrow is his 30th birthday, but also the Leaf’s home opener, given the craziness that is about to erupt with the start of the season, Fred thought it was best to do a dinner before.
Fred booked a private room at a restaurant and is planning on introducing Jessica to the team. Everyone has confirmed if they are coming and bringing a date except for Auston. He wants to meet the woman who has the potential to pull Fred off the market, the first to do so since he was in Anaheim. He wants to celebrate his friend’s birthday and be out with the team. But he doesn’t want to leave Tia.
“I have to see, there is –“
“Tony, seriously?” Fred asks. Shaking his head, he groans as exasperation crosses his hardened face. “You’ve been like this all month. What the fuck is going on?”
“Nothing.” When he looks at his friend, he immediately knows he doesn’t believe him. “It’s Tia, she –“
“Is she dying?” Fred harshly cuts in, frustration very evident. It’s not that he doesn’t care about Tia’s wellbeing, it’s that his friend has had nothing but excuses for the last month and he doesn’t know what to believe anymore. If his friend were a little more forthcoming perhaps Fred would be a little more sympathetic.
Auston sighs, gaze falling to the floor as he quietly mutters a ‘no.’
“Then I think she will be okay for one night.”
Auston hasn’t told him, he hasn’t told anyone besides Becks what happened. It’s not his place to tell. Though it would be much easier if he could explain it. “It’s not that simple.”
“Even if you were dating her, which you’re not,” Fred makes sure to emphasize, “you could go out and have dinner with your friends. You are allowed to leave,” Fred’s voice is firm as his brown eyes pierce his friend.
“If you’re being held hostage blink twice,” Mitch chimes in, popping out from behind Fred. Grabbing Auston by the shoulders, Mitch laughs, “was that a blink? Did he blink twice?” Mitch asks Fred, while giving Auston a slight shake. Shaking his head, Fred lets some of the anger fall from his face.
“Fuck off Mitch,” Auston shakes his head, laughing slightly.
“Come to Fred’s birthday dinner and I will,” Mitch winks at him.
“Fine,” Auston reluctantly agrees. “I’ll come for dinner.”
“Yes!” Mitch cheers, releasing him.
“That’s good,” Fred finally smiles. “I already told everyone you were paying, would have been awkward if you didn’t show up.”
**
Tia continued to think about Thomas while on the bus. She thought about him in her sustainable design class, she tapped her pencil against her sketchbook thinking about him when she should have been working on her senior design project, and she thought about him when Auston text her that he was going out for dinner that night. And all that thinking lead to one place, the same place, each and every time.
“Can you take Taylour tonight?” Tia asks, setting her bag down at her desk. Walking into the bathroom she stops at the mirror and pulls out some ChapStick, applying a light layer to her lips.
“Where?” Becks leans against the doorframe.
“To your place,” Tia opens up the top drawer and starts running a brush through her hair. “Just for an hour or two. I want to see Thomas.”
“Tia,” Becks face flushes with blood as she thinks of the impending disaster. “Do you honestly think fucking Thomas is the best thing for you right now?”
Becks doesn’t want to leave Tia alone with Thomas, she doesn’t want Tia to see Thomas ever again. After her birthday party Camille told her some details about Thomas, and he is not the kind of person she’d want Tia to be friends with, let alone date. There just hasn’t been a time to tell Tia. First Tia ignored her for a month and didn’t give Becks a chance, and for the last five weeks Becks has been too worried about her friend’s wellbeing to tell her, not wanting to risk the fallout. And if Tia wasn’t going to see him, was there really a rush to tell her?
“I just want to talk,” Tia tells her, and it’s the truth. She has no intention of sleeping with him, or anyone for a while. After talking with Heidi, Tia realizes how she had been using sex as a coping mechanism – and she worries if she starts sleeping with Thomas again and something happens, she will revert back to her old ways and start using it as a way to forget about her problems. “I need to know what happened,” Tia adds in when she senses her hesitation.
“Do you honestly think I’m going to leave you alone with him?” It’s not an actual question, but it does make Becks question her friend’s sanity.
“Becks,” Tia sighs, and closes the drawer to her vanity a little harder than necessary.
“He isn’t good for you,” Emily adds from the edge of the bed.
“Have you been talking to Auston?” Tia mutters bitterly and rolls her eyes. While Heidi has had constructive conversations about Thomas and the impact he has had on her life, Auston only gets mad.
Anytime Thomas’s name has appeared on her phone, Auston hasn’t held back in telling her that she is being reckless in responding, that he is bad for her – an enabler who only furthers her poor decisions. In his opinion Tia would be better off never seeing him again, and his opinion is right. Only his opinion is right.
“No, but I have been talking to Claire,” Becks promptly protests.
“Are you fucking kidding me?” Tia cocks a brow. Tugging the zipper down she tosses aside her dress and exchanges her outfit for a pair of leggings and an oversized sweater. “What the fuck could Claire possibly have to say? And why should I care?”
After taking a deep breath and carefully glancing over to Emily, as if she is waiting for confirmation to go ahead, Becks starts to explain, “Thomas hit on her at my birthday.”
“Like fuck he did,” Tia scoffs and rolls her eyes. “I saw what happened, she was –“
“Max saw it too,” Becks interjects.
“Max was sitting only a few feet away most of the night,” Emily tells her. “After you left, he kept talking to her, bought her and Thea some drinks –“
“It was a party, everyone was buying drinks for the group!” Tia snaps, her face beginning to harden.
“He tried to dance with her.”
“He was close to her, very close.”
“Hands on her hips close.”
“But Claire told him off.”
The two women take turns, adding in small bits and pieces while talking over the other. After a minute of listening to them ramble, Tia doesn’t believe a word that they are saying because it came from Claire. She has proven that she will do absolutely anything to get between Tia and a man, regardless of the impact. After what happened how can her friends trust this?
“That’s what Claire fucking told you happened?” Tia doesn’t want to sound so harsh after everything her friends have done for her, but she can’t help it. There is only so many lies she could take before her anger is too much to hold back.
“We were right there, saw it all happen,”
“Right,” she scoffs and rolls her eyes sarcastically. “Because you had a clear head that night. You,” she focusses her gaze on Becks, “were so drunk the bouncers barely let you in the bar. And you,” she turns to Emily, “did two tequila shots before 10pm. Not the most reliable sources.”
“He and Max got into it, Thomas ended up leaving,” Becks tells her.
Tia rolls her eyes at their persistence. She understands everyone is hesitant of her seeing Thomas because her weekend started at his house, but like Heidi said, it doesn’t matter what they think, only what she does, and she is ready to speak to him.
“Max tried to tell you, but you ignored his calls for weeks.” Emily steps to their aid, speaking firmly, very frustrated at Tia’s hard-headedness.
“I had some shit going on, my kid was in the hospital,” Tia doesn’t skip a beat, quickly and firmly trying to shut her friends down.
“He got better, two weeks later he was in Arizona. Don’t use Taylour as an excuse for you being a shitty friend and choosing your shitty boyfriend over us!” The anger in Emily’s voice isn’t just the type of anger that’s heard, it’s felt, in every bone in Tia’s body, and she has no idea how to respond. In the two years since Max started dating Emily, Tia has never seen her so much as raise her voice. She is the type to avoid confrontation and will just accept whatever is happening, then gripe and moan about it later when alone.
“We were so fucking worried about you,” Emily tries to stay strong, but tears are slowly flooding her piercing cobalt blue eyes. “You ignored us for weeks, and we tried to play it off as you being busy, but now we find out that you were trying to speak to your mom. And for some reason when you couldn’t do it, instead of leaning on us, your friends,” turning to Becks, who has even more emotion on her face, a mangled sob catches in Emily’s throat, “she is Taylour’s godmother…she cut his umbilical cord and you couldn’t tell…talk…you…”
At this point everything becomes too much, and Emily can’t even fumble her way through. Her shoulders drop and tears are steadily flowing from her eyes. Becks is the first to bring her in for a hug, but only because she is closer. Within seconds Tia is there and the three of them are crying. Not soft sniffles, but full-fledged, chest heaving, never ending streams rippling down their cheeks, crying. “I’m sorry,” Tia sobs against Emily’s shoulder.
“No, I’m sorry,” Becks, shifts to wrap her arms around both of them. “I should have done more.”
“No,” Tia sniffles again, running a hand over Emily’s golden hair. “I should have gone to you. But it was easier to do drugs and have shitty sex than not talk about it. I…I was embarrassed –“
“You have no reason to be with us,” Becks pulls back and removes her glasses, wiping the tears from the corners of her eyes. “Ever.”
“Yeah,” Emily whispers through her sniffles. “It’s not your fault your mom’s a cunt.”
“Emily!” Becks’ gasps as she puts her round frames back on her nose, but Tia just laughs. A faint barely there laugh that is hard to hear through her tears, but a laugh, nonetheless.
“What?” Emily quietly chuckles. “It’s true.”
“You –“
“No,” Tia pulls back and stares directly into Emily’s eyes. Wiping away the tears she feels responsible for with the pads of her thumb, she laughs again. “She’s right, Kylie is a cunt.” Emily smirks at Tia, and Tia fights back the laugh, but once Emily breaks so does Tia and they both burst out laughing, Becks joining in not long after. “My mom is a cunt,” she laughs out a few minutes later.
“A huge cunt,” Emily adds through her own laughter.
“What does cunt mean Mommy?” Taylour’s small voice cuts into their laughter, and all of their faces go white with fear. Finally coming back to reality, Tia is completely at a loss of what to do or how to even address this.
“It means you get McDonalds and ice cream if you never say that word again,” Emily bribes Taylour. Walking towards him, Emily bends down and picks him up right as he starts to cheer over the treats coming his way. Not exactly Tia’s preferred way of handling it, but it will work for now.
“I can’t believe my son just said that,” Tia drags a hand down her face in disbelief.
“I can’t believe it took him that long to say it,” Becks teases, giving Tia a playful nudge.
The two of them share a soft laugh as they both wipe away the stubborn tears that sit in the edge of their eyes. As Taylour’s laughter erupts from the living room, Becks tugs Tia over to the bed. She should have known this conversation wasn’t over.
“Can I tell you something?” Becks holds Tia’s hands in hers.
“Would it matter if I said no?” Tia tries to joke, but she can’t help but notice the hard expression on her friend’s face, the playfulness from before having gone.
“Remember how Camille wanted to set you up with his friend Trevor?” Tia nods in response. “Well, I have since found out why she thought Trevor was better than Thomas.” Tia nods again. “He…he had a reputation in college. He and his friends partied, there was always drugs and women, multiple times a week.” Swallowing the tangled lump in her throat, Tia nods. “I don’t think he’s good for you, especially right now.”
“Just because he was–“
“No, I know,” Becks squeezes her hand and speaks softly. “And I know some people change, but some don’t.”
Tia’s stomach twists hearing this, but she tries to tell herself that he was single all throughout college. It’s not exactly fair to judge someone on the way they lived during their early twenties, it’s the time when they are supposed to make mistakes. What he did at twenty isn’t important, all that matters is the type of person he is now.
“I need this, Heidi says I shouldn’t run from problems…I think he can answer some questions.”
Her memory is like a jigsaw puzzle but not all of the pieces are in the box. Thomas is those missing pieces, the key to understanding exactly what happened.
“I feel like this is a terrible idea,” Becks laments.
“He’s going to be here in twenty minutes,” Tia informs her.
“Tia,” Becks groans, rolling her head dramatically.
“Take Taylour to McDonalds,” opening the top drawer, she pulls out the credit card Auston left her ‘just in case’ and hands it to her. “Buy him a happy meal, and whatever you guys want on Auston,” she emphasizes, “then some ice cream, let him play in the play place and burn off his energy. Come back in an hour.”
Flipping her wrist over, Becks looks at the time, then brings her gaze back up to Tia. “6:30 I’m walking back through that door, and Thomas better be gone,” she issues a stern warning.
“If not, you can kick him out.”
“Don’t encourage me.” Becks smiles hollowly, still uneasy about the entire thing. “You want me to bring you back some fries?”
“And an apple pie,” Tia nods.
“Wait. How come you get mad when Auston tries to give you money, but you hand out his credit card without even blinking?”
“I really want apple pie,” Tia shrugs dismissively. Auston has been desperate to help her financially, surely McDonalds for her friends counts.
**
By the time Tia and Becks left her room, Taylour was already wearing his shoes, fiddling with the doorknob and bouncing on his heels. When Emily and Becks opened the door he all but squealed and didn’t even notice Tia wasn’t joining them. When the lock caught, Tia returned to her room and unpacked her laptop. She brushed her teeth and tried to not let her anxiety get the best of her, but all the strength she built up asking Thomas to come over had faded, and all she had left was dread.
When the soft knock rattled off the door, Tia felt her lunch starting to make a reappearance. Fluttering her eyes closed, she took a deep breath and told herself everything would be okay, then opened the door.
“Tia,” Thomas smiles at her. Stepping into her apartment wearing a tee cut perfectly to his torso, it showcases every dip and curve of his muscles, he looks good. She hates that he looks good. “I missed you.”
“Sorry.” She tilts her head to smile back and he wastes no time, leaning down to kiss her lightly.
His lips taste like watermelon.
“No, baby, don’t be sorry,” he kisses her again. “I was just so worried about you.”
Kissing her again, Tia melts into his touch. She fits perfectly in his embrace, and his lips are warm and comforting, making her forget about all the reasons she invited him over. That weekend and all the issues they had before fade further and further into the distance the more his tongue works its way into her mouth.
Then it hits her again. That faint lingering taste of watermelon, its reminiscent of that night. But as she tries to ignore the flavour and focus on Thomas, two words pop into her head. Destructive Behaviour. Heidi’s voice and the taste of watermelon cause her to pull back and drop her face to his chest.
“We need to talk,” she softly explains. Stepping back, Tia walks to the couch and Thomas follows after her, sitting close he puts one hand high on her thigh.
“How have you been?” He smiles, leaning in to kiss her again.
“Shitty, like really shitty,” a tinge of pain is in her voice, and she turns her cheek to not let him kiss her again. It doesn’t stop him; he places a kiss to her cheek, a soft, barely-there kiss that is hardly felt yet lingers long after his lips have gone. She hates how he thinks he can kiss her as if nothing happened, but even more she hates that it’s working. “Auston found me passed out on the kitchen floor, my son almost saw me –“ Shaking her head, Tia fights the frustrated tears from falling.
“It was Mel’s birthday; everyone was having fun and –“
“I know something happened,” Tia tells him, her voice firm and unwavering. “I don’t know what, just that something did.”
“Tia, you were pretty messed up,” he tries to laugh it off. Thomas is confused by the switch in her behaviour, one second she was kissing him and the next she is angered and demanding answers. “There is no way you could remember.”
“I wouldn’t have left and went to the club at 3am if everything was fine.” Tia firmly tells him, trying to hide the sinking feeling when his eyes dart away from hers. It’s obvious he is covering up something. “I remember being in the kitchen and taking body shots…kissing Mel…” Tia trails off when she notices the white flicking over his face. “We were in the bedroom.” Tia swore she heard his heart thumping rapidly in his chest.
“Yeah, we were…” Thomas finally starts talking, filling in gaps, pieces from the night, but Tia can only focus on one thing. Watermelon.
Bringing her hand up to her mouth, Tia finally places it and gasps. She had the taste of watermelon on her lips that night right after she kissed Mel. “You fucked her.” Thomas’s eyes go wide, and she swears she could hear the air escape his lungs.
“Tia –“
“NO!” she flies off the couch and gives him a look.
That night she noticed Thomas had been missing for about twenty minutes. Jordan said something about getting ice and Tia accepted the explanation and poured another drink. When Tia finished that drink Thomas still hadn’t come back, and she set out to make sure he was okay. She stumbled through his apartment and noticed his shoes by the door and continued to his bedroom. That’s when she found the two of them, Melissa on top and his cock buried deep inside of her.
Neither one even noticed the music get louder when she opened the door, too caught up in the other. And when she yelled out ‘what the fuck’ and captured their attention, Thomas looked like a deer in headlights where Melissa manipulated her face into a devious grin, as if she was pleased with herself.
She isn’t sure of a lot of things, but that image and Melissa’s moans, burn into her brain clear as day.
“Tia, You were messed up, there is no way–“
“No,” her gut twists remembering that.
How could she be so blind to miss all the signs because fuck they were there. That first night she met Melissa, Tia had an uneasy feeling about her, but Thomas told her not to worry, they were just friends. But something in the way Melissa would look at him made her wonder if that were true.
Every part of her skin begins to crawl, as if a hundred tiny spiders are walking on her body. Rubbing her arm against her side in an attempt to dissolve the itch, tears begin to burn her eyes but she refuses to let them fall. “You need to leave.”
Patting the couch beside him, Thomas keeps his body calm and softly speaks, “Tia. Let’s just talk.”
“NO!” Red-hot anger courses through her body, leaving a bitter taste in her mouth. “You need to get the fuck out!”
Thomas stands up, his large frame towering over her. Tilting his head to the side he lets his neck crack while closing the gap to look down at her. “Fine,” he seethes. “It’s not like this was going anywhere, can’t bring a stripper home to meet mom.”
“GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY HOUSE!“ Tia screams loudly. There is a weight in her stomach and a knot in her chest. She’s using every ounce of strength to not break down in front of him. “NOW!” she demands.
He takes a step closer, his chest almost pressing up against her. “It’s a shame you and Auston couldn’t work things out, you’re perfect for each other; stripping in public and all,” he sneers. He has her locked under his gaze as the edges of his lips curve upwards with disdain. Her heart races as she digests his words.
Tia isn’t going to let him see her fall apart. She isn’t going to let him leave knowing he got the best of her. She says nothing else. She purses her lips and watches as he finally stalks away, to the door. Once she hears the door shut, her tears finally spill over her lashes and a quiet sob escapes. Everything begins to get heavy, and her lower lip begins to tremble. For the first time in six weeks, she found herself wishing Auston was there, only so she wouldn’t be alone.
