the thing is seasons 2-3 sam and dean are almost the only Real People in the story. and bc they are constantly on the move and so unsettled every other entity they meet feels too liminal to grasp onto. esp in the absence of John. so they stick so so horribly close together. two halves of one animal/machine. they live in the same car they sleep in the same rooms you can't unstick them. between themselves they have little dramas but in the eps where you get an outside perspective their synchronicity is kind of creepy. and then as we know dean goes to hell and sam fills up his void with ruby and when they see each other again they are officially Two Different Animals. they both profess that they cannot Possibly communicate the enormity of what has happened to them individually. they are like phantom limbs of each other they are Unstuck. we can never go back. horrifying to behold.

One of my favourite things is how dean acts around sam and eileen when they first get together. It’s so clear that they are in their honemoon phase while dean is going through a break up and still trying to be a supportive big brother. You can see so clearly the way he’s trying to give them space and is constantly being reminded of having that not so long ago himself as well.
