A nuclear blast, a good bad girl and a bad good girl, a heroic newspaper man, tragic runaway convicts, the last dregs of the wild west- Split Second (1953) takes every idea in film noir off the shelf and sees what comes of it. The setup is implausible, but at a breakneck pace and in a desperate mood, we can buy it- criminals, including one slowly dying of a gunshot wound, take a group of hostages and bring them to a ghost town where an atomic test is scheduled to happen. The convicts don't really care if they get caught in the blast, but the hostages sure do. And then a grizzled prospector wanders onto the scene.

It's not science fiction- such tests really happened, and the radiation slowly killed many people who worked on them- but it's all about dangerous technology. If Kiss Me Deadly showed the worrying mystery of nuclear science, Split Second shows our fear once we already know what it can do. It works very well as a thriller, because we don't need to be convinced of the danger- we know that every moment anyone stays put takes them closer to apocalyptic destruction.

It's not quite a lost masterpiece, but I'm very glad I saw Split Second, and if you're interested in lesser-known noir, I advocate checking it out. Certainly if you've played any Fallout game (or watched the show), this is essential viewing.

The commentary track for 1990s scifi horror flick Split Second is the last place I would have expected to randomly hear someone comment that Ruby Rose just stepped down from playing Batwoman.
