This may well be the most barren anime season since I started watched. Is this what... free time feels like?
Atelier Ryza:
Tumblr media
The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses: GoHands must be stopped.
Horimiya Piece: I didn’t realize how much I missed these goobers.
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2: This is some of the most wildly experimental animation I’ve seen in a mainstream shonen adaptation. More, please!
The Masterful Cat is Depressed Again Today: GoHands must be sto- actually, this one’s pretty okay.
Mushoku Tensei Season 2: So a new character we’re supposed to like and sympathize with makes a joke about raping a young girl and it’s just brushed off? Yep, this is Mushoku Tensei alright.
My Happy Marriage: Equal chance of suffocating under too much melodrama or blooming into an ugly-cry masterpiece. Fingers crossed for the latter!
Reign of the Seven Spellblades: Well, that was the most embarrassing DeviantArt-tier shit I’ve watched in a long time.
Sugar Apple Fairy Tale: Hooray, more thorny slavery metaphors!
Undead Murder Farce: The director of Kaguya-Sama takes on a twisty-turny supernatural period piece with a macabre flair. I am down.
Zom100: Never fucking bet against the director of Komi-san. Shame about the sexism though...

Harry Potter-like series reveals a sexfluid character among its protagonists
Do YOU: A) Support trans/LGBTQ rights, BUT ALSO B) Want to be 100% free of any guilt while you enjoy/embrace a story that contains all of the following:
Up-and-coming young wizards/witches attend a magical academy together
Said academy is a castle in England
The students attend the academy for seven years
Classes include magical combat, potions, magical creatures, herbology, and broom-flying
While the students attend those classes, they simultaneously have adventures in and around the school's grounds, encountering dangerous beasts and dark wizards?
If that sounds like something YOU want, I legit recommend you try out Reign of the Seven Spellblades — a light-novel series which became a manga which has now become an anime!
Tumblr media
I first came into this series via the current anime. And as the headline up above states, said anime recently revealed one of heroes in the focal circle of friends has literal sexfluidity. (Like, they're not merely genderfluid. They actually switch their physical sex. ["If only it were that easy," amirite?])
Episode 7 (i.e., the one right after that big twist/reveal I wrote about previously) begins with one of our protagonists, Pete Reston, waking up from a strange dream to reveal that the character-formerly-known-as-"he" is hiding breasts under their shirt. Upon my first viewing, I naturally thought we were learning that Pete was secretly transmasc this whole time, which would've been a cool enough touch. But I've already spoiled that that's NOT where this story goes, so...
Ultimately, Oliver (Pete's roommate and the series' co-lead) notices that Pete's... shaped differently, and Pete is forced to admit that they don't even know what's happening to them. Lucky for Pete, then, that Oliver has read up a LOT on the magical world. He's always there to drop a knowledge bomb. Like this one.

Not only does Pete then get the full support of his friends (who finally learn all about this in episode 9 and are happy for him/have no problem with it), his class president also steps in to share with him a secret meeting place for people just like himself.

QUEER MAGIC CLUB QUEER MAGIC CLUB
So yeah; it's been a pretty cool little touch. Plus it feels like they're gently flipping the bird at the creator of Rot7S' obvious inspiration.

Reign of the Seven Spellblades was recommended to me as (to vastly oversimplify) "Harry Potter, but good". And that's a decent summary of the appeal. It's the same core fantasy, minus the "escaping your unpleasant mundane life" and most of the problems that taint Harry Potter's take on the fantastical boarding school. (Also, from what little information I can find, Bokuto Uno doesn't seem to be militantly opposed to the existence of trans people.)
However, that comparison also colors the way I look at the series. Would I have identified the girl with long brown hair who gets angry about demihumans being treated inhumanely or the antisocial bookworm as the Hermiones of the cast if I hadn't seen the series directly compared to Harry Potter?
Anyways, on that note, my first impression of the main cast:
Katie: Nice Hermione who hopefully has a better taste in animal friends than Hagrid
Pete: Bookish Hermione
Oliver: Harry minus angst...or maybe a young Damien Kazinski? Team Mom either way.
Guy: Unfriendly Ron, with Neville's green thumb
Chela: Malfoy, but nice
Nanao: Shonen Jump hero who enrolled in wizard school because her manga was cancelled after one volume.
I'm 100% serious about that last one. She had a violent backstory which involves almost dying in a Bolivian Army Ending; she has a big fish-out-of-water vibe (like she's from a different genre, or at least a different world); she uses swords more than magic. Nanao even has the appetite of a stock shonen hero!
On a completely unrelated note, the setting feels casually magical in a way that Hogwarts doesn't. Bewitching a girl to run at a parade is a plausible prank. The Great Hall's dining tables are on the ceiling, and gravity is inverted at mealtimes. Characters casually levitate a map and point at it with glowing wands to explain where they're from. Nobody draws attention to it, it's just there.
Also, Nanao rescued Nice Hermione twice in one episode (which was mostly focused on establishing the characters, setting, and tone), and the second involved a princess carry. Wonder where that's going.

Brooms are an ancient magical animal species that has been around for longer than all of mankind. The reason we associate brooms with cleaning is because our ancestors used their corpses to clean our homes.
Okay, this has to be my favorite explanation for flying brooms ever. I love it.
They aren’t tools, they’re birds!
I love this series.
Reign of the Seven Spellblades, if you’re curious.

Nanatsuma Fridays let’s gooo. Another well adapted episode from JC staff. Only thing missing was a class from this chapter but it’s alright.
We get our formal introduction to Tullio Rossi, aka the biggest hater in the series lol. It’s good to have an old fashioned hater who’s not out for power or world domination or anything seriously nefarious, just sipping that good old fashioned haterade. Can’t let anyone get more shine than him. In the end, Oliver showed him they’re a class apart in terms of skill.

Episodes like this are also great for showing that while as talented as he is, Oliver is still very inexperienced and not the overall strongest in this universe. A lot of anime onlies saw the long coat, sword and black hair and wrote him off as a “kirito clone” or “generic” without even allowing the story to develop. He very much has to rely on his friends and family for emotional and physical support
