Bokuto Uno's postscript to the first volume of the Reign of the Seven Spellblades manga is a delight. I relate strongly to both their hype level around Sakae Esuno and the fact that they most immediately associate him with Future Diary.

The Reign of the Seven Spellblades Manga Ends
The January 2024 issue of Kadokawa’s Monthly Shōnen Ace magazine has published the final chapter of Sakae Esuno’s manga adaptation of Bokuto Uno and Ruria Miyuki’s Reign of the Seven Spellblades light novels. The series is described as: It’s springtime at Kimberly Magic Academy, and that means the arrival of a fresh crop of first-year students. Whether it’s the quiet and studious Oliver Horn or…

▶️ REIGN OF THE SEVEN SPELLBLADES: IL PRIMO EPISODIO DELL'ANIME ANDRÀ IN ONDA IL 7 LUGLIO! 🧙
La cosa più vicina ad Harry Potter in versione anime che avremo mai? Quello sembra, staremo a vedere.
La nuova serie di casa J.C. STAFF (DanMachi, Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts) si ispira all'action fantasy scolastico firmato da Bokuto Uno (Alderamin on the Sky); alla regia c'è Masato Matsune (Chronos Ruler, WIXOSS Diva(A)Live).

Harry Potter-like series reveals a sexfluid character among its protagonists
Do YOU: A) Support trans/LGBTQ rights, BUT ALSO B) Want to be 100% free of any guilt while you enjoy/embrace a story that contains all of the following:
Up-and-coming young wizards/witches attend a magical academy together
Said academy is a castle in England
The students attend the academy for seven years
Classes include magical combat, potions, magical creatures, herbology, and broom-flying
While the students attend those classes, they simultaneously have adventures in and around the school's grounds, encountering dangerous beasts and dark wizards?
If that sounds like something YOU want, I legit recommend you try out Reign of the Seven Spellblades — a light-novel series which became a manga which has now become an anime!
I first came into this series via the current anime. And as the headline up above states, said anime recently revealed one of heroes in the focal circle of friends has literal sexfluidity. (Like, they're not merely genderfluid. They actually switch their physical sex. ["If only it were that easy," amirite?])
Episode 7 (i.e., the one right after that big twist/reveal I wrote about previously) begins with one of our protagonists, Pete Reston, waking up from a strange dream to reveal that the character-formerly-known-as-"he" is hiding breasts under their shirt. Upon my first viewing, I naturally thought we were learning that Pete was secretly transmasc this whole time, which would've been a cool enough touch. But I've already spoiled that that's NOT where this story goes, so...
Ultimately, Oliver (Pete's roommate and the series' co-lead) notices that Pete's... shaped differently, and Pete is forced to admit that they don't even know what's happening to them. Lucky for Pete, then, that Oliver has read up a LOT on the magical world. He's always there to drop a knowledge bomb. Like this one.
Not only does Pete then get the full support of his friends (who finally learn all about this in episode 9 and are happy for him/have no problem with it), his class president also steps in to share with him a secret meeting place for people just like himself.
QUEER MAGIC CLUB QUEER MAGIC CLUB
So yeah; it's been a pretty cool little touch. Plus it feels like they're gently flipping the bird at the creator of Rot7S' obvious inspiration.

Reign of the Seven Spellblades was recommended to me as (to vastly oversimplify) "Harry Potter, but good". And that's a decent summary of the appeal. It's the same core fantasy, minus the "escaping your unpleasant mundane life" and most of the problems that taint Harry Potter's take on the fantastical boarding school. (Also, from what little information I can find, Bokuto Uno doesn't seem to be militantly opposed to the existence of trans people.)
However, that comparison also colors the way I look at the series. Would I have identified the girl with long brown hair who gets angry about demihumans being treated inhumanely or the antisocial bookworm as the Hermiones of the cast if I hadn't seen the series directly compared to Harry Potter?
Anyways, on that note, my first impression of the main cast:
Katie: Nice Hermione who hopefully has a better taste in animal friends than Hagrid
Pete: Bookish Hermione
Oliver: Harry minus angst...or maybe a young Damien Kazinski? Team Mom either way.
Guy: Unfriendly Ron, with Neville's green thumb
Chela: Malfoy, but nice
Nanao: Shonen Jump hero who enrolled in wizard school because her manga was cancelled after one volume.
I'm 100% serious about that last one. She had a violent backstory which involves almost dying in a Bolivian Army Ending; she has a big fish-out-of-water vibe (like she's from a different genre, or at least a different world); she uses swords more than magic. Nanao even has the appetite of a stock shonen hero!
On a completely unrelated note, the setting feels casually magical in a way that Hogwarts doesn't. Bewitching a girl to run at a parade is a plausible prank. The Great Hall's dining tables are on the ceiling, and gravity is inverted at mealtimes. Characters casually levitate a map and point at it with glowing wands to explain where they're from. Nobody draws attention to it, it's just there.
Also, Nanao rescued Nice Hermione twice in one episode (which was mostly focused on establishing the characters, setting, and tone), and the second involved a princess carry. Wonder where that's going.

Summer 2023 Anime-Round Up
A pretty mediocre season of anime tbh. But still some hidden gems to be found and appreciated. RIP to Zom 100 btw lmao. Anyway, here's the round up!
Anime of the Season: Bungou Stray Dogs 5th Season
Best Opening: Ao no Sumika (Jujutsu Kaisen S2)
Best Ending: Akari: (Jujutsu Kaisen S2)
Drops: Tenpuru, Liar Liar
Plans to Watch at a later date: Bang Dream! It's MyGO!!!!! , Dark Gathering, Spy Classroom Season 2
Completed:
Jobless Reincarnation: Season 2 - (6/10)
They told me that this season was just Rudeus trying to cure his ED. Too bad I didn't believe them. Not a fan of the "Solve my heartbreak over one of harem girls dumping me by finding another one of my harem girls" narrative that went on for 5 episodes more than it needed too. Unsure if I'll come back for more of this. After 3 cours of this show, I think I can confidently say I just don't like Rudeus.
Horimiya: Piece - (8/10)
Not every side-story worked for me, but most of them were pretty good. I just love how stupid and honest these kids are. Sometimes, the way anime glorifies high school life can be overbearing, but I can't help but wishing I enjoyed those days more whenever I watch this show. Gonna miss it.
Remi best girl.
Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Arc Part 2 - (7/10)
Definitely felt the exhaustion I remembered when reading the manga. I'm not sure what's Kubo fascination with long strings of fights while the plot stands completely still. Didn't enjoy it during the Arrancar arc, not enjoying now. At least Squad 0 redeemed themselves (somewhat)
My Happy Marriage - (8/10)
Still believe this show would be better if it didn't have all that supernatural stuff. Nevertheless, still enjoyable romance. Mio is a great lead and her development alongside Kiyoka was really good. We will be there for Season 2.
Reign of the Seven Spellblades - (6/10)
Remember when "Magic High School" was the genre that was oversaturated? Me neither. This show was enjoyable but had some weird moments. Also for once, I'd like a magic show that doesn't obsesses over the reproductive system. Probably won't watch any foreseeable sequel. Still rooting for Nanao to get that kiss.
Bungou Stray Dogs 5th Season - (9/10)
Actual Peak Fiction. Igarashi and his team at Bones just know how to make this show as stylish and cool as possible. Also this arc is by far the best one we've gotten so far. Could feel the tension at every episode where crazy shit happened. Shame I can't read the manga to find out what happens next lol.
Undead Girl Murder Farce - (8/10)
Now this is a show that had style in every corner of its being. Undead Murder Farce with just so fun to watch. The trio of Aya/Tsugaru/Shizuku is one of my favorites in recent times and the side characters we very memorable. I think the last arc when one for 1 or 2 episodes more than it needed too, but still enjoyable nonetheless
EDENS ZERO 2nd Season - (7/10)
This season was a lot more darker than what I usually expect from Mashima. Wish the presentation wasn't so exact to Fairy Tail, but it has some high points that exceeds it's sister series. Probably will check out the manga if a third season isn't announced sometime in the future.
Fate/strange Fake: Whispers of Dawn - (8/10)
An anime series by the team that did all those FGO commercials is any fate fans dream. Cannot wait for the full show of this. I hope Aniplex gives them enough time to animated this (they probably won't)

New anime! I've been watching new anime! Here is what I'm watching and what I want to watch and some thoughts. So *spoilers*
SpyxFamily s2: At first it was a little hard getting into. Then by the ep where Frankie and Yor try and rescue a cat, I was hooked again. The boat arc is great. The timing of the fireworks and Yor's epif boss battle fight was great. Anya's trying to hide both Loid's true ID and Yor's at the same time was hilarious. I'm looking forward to the movie in April that I will be going to.
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End: Amazing. Truly one of the best series in a long time. I have only seen the dubbed, but I will go back and watch subbed when it's all done. I mean s1. The animation is breathtaking. I love pretty much all the characters, which is hard to do. Fav ships are Frieren/Himmel and Fern/Stark. Himmel is my fav character. There's a Frieren Discord that's been a lot of fun. It's amazing that there are fans all over the world there and we all love the same series. (Same with other discords. But this is the most active one I've been in.) The pacing is much different than Slayers, but it's fantasy. There's lots of cool battles. Especially recently with the exam arc. I haven't read the manga yet but I have the first 9 on my iPad. So I intend to. Highly recommend if you want to only watch one.
Apothecary Diaries: It took a bit to be hooked, by ep 9 I was. I am watching dubs again (with everything I'm watching lately since I love to draw and watch often.) And I like it. MaoMao is hilarious. The way she gets excited for booze and poisons is pure gold. Now I'm at the point with the Uru OP. I love Uru already so when I heard this theme I was already a fan. Jinshi has taken a bit for me to like, but that's just me. The acting is pretty great if you ask me.
Bride of Magus:
I started it. I liked the dragons. The dubbed is okay.
What I want to watch: Solo Leveling, Bocchi, My Happy Marriage, To your Eternity, the rest of Fruits Basket newer series, Reign of Seven Spellblades, Delicious in Dungeon, Fate/Apocrypha.
I have a lot. Lol there's so much now it's overwhelming. Going to start Metallic Rogue at anime night this month. So that'll be fun too.

Reign of the Seven Spellblades babble
SO MANY FEELS Y'ALL.
Like, for starters, it's the first light novel series ever to make me cry.
At work, even.
I stand by what I said before - if you loved Harry Potter once, but became disillusioned or had problems with her worldbuilding, this series will be the best dark ride of your life.
But oh. It will hurt. Mostly because it makes a bit too much sense.
I'm'a get less coherent now. You want this stuff to make sense, go read the series. (The anime will get you from volume one to volume three, but skims kind of a lot. The manga does not even get you THAT far.)
ARRRGH PETE. Oliver is so much more messed up than you realize. I mean I get it, roommate, first serious crush, etc. BUT TRUST ME YOU DON'T WANT TO TAP THAT ASS. You don't. I get why you think you do, but sweet summer child you really really don't.
Ah, Oliver. You are going to be crucified, aren't you. If this were a Western story you absolutely would be. I'm holding out some hope that since this is not, ultimately, a Western story, that maybe JUST MAYBE your adorable chirpy Japanese girlfriend will bitchslap some sense into you before you burn yourself out in a very literal way. Then again, she's...uh. Not sane. I suppose I should really just hope that when you go down in flames, she'll be on fire and falling next to you?
In a sense, this is a harem story. But it really doesn't feel like one, even with all the people of all genders that wind up falling at Oliver's feet. And I think it's because all the people falling at Oliver's feet are ...just like him, in the end. Abused and neglected children who just want someone, anyone, to tell them they're good people and it's going to be okay. Oliver needs it just as much as everyone around him, but he's flipped the script so that he gives the world what he most needs and it usually turns out to be the right thing because the world's just that. fucked. up.
This series is seriously making me want to write Draco Goes To Therapy fic. I'm not going to, that fandom can fry, but the temptation's there.
Bone-boy is going to come in handy before the end. I can feeeeel it. Maybe he'll fix Oliver's broken soul. (Shush, shippers, I actually mean that very literally.) And if the final boss is a soul-sucking vampire, it kinds feels right that the final-boss-squad include a necromancer.
Please, story, and I really am begging you here, please don't kill Katie. Please don't let her be consumed by the spell. In a lot of ways her continued survival symbolizes Oliver's hopes. Can we please please not murder her? I don't even care if it takes Oliver knocking her up (provided Nanao at least knows about it) but don't kill her. Please please.
Also please give Pete to the Toxic Gasser. They'd be the very best genderqueer couple ever just please let them have to work together long enough to start eyeing each other?
#reign of the seven spellblades#ARGH I HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL **MAY** FOR THE NEXT BOOK?#WTF IS THIS 'TIME' BS ANYWAY??
