My heartbeat picked up pace immediately as I watched him reach for the box. As the round steel lay on my chest, I swear I could feel my heart racing against it, as if he had just dialled on the speedup button. I instinctively look at anywhere but his eyes, but at some instances our gazes locked momentarily, and it killed me. A while later as he took it down, I tried to smile as casually as possible, “ ears okay?” I was met with a smile back, “yeah. You okay?” My breathing was already somewhat shallow, “I’m never outgrowing the nervousness of this.” And it showed, because this was the first time I stammered today. “Good”, he said, “Don’t change. I like it.” A tinge of sadness swept over me, “you’re not gonna see much more of this, you know.” And then his right palm rested on the upper part of my heart, gently, “yes, so I may as well make the most of it.”
That’s really all it took, and all it will ever take, for me to enter into a trance right there. A hand over my heart is my eternal weakness. His hand was warm and comfortable, but electrifying all at the same time. I trembled- or shuddered- and I wondered if he knew. A huge wave of sensation shot through me, a feeling that was so specific, that was that way only because this extraordinarily specific craving was satisfied at last. In just the right way. My heart beat eagerly, earning to get closer to his palm, to be in it. I looked at him with a nervous smile, knowing that he was enjoying what he just did, too. In that moment, it was almost like I wanted my heart to send a message that I myself had no intention to. That I had really liked it. That this couldn’t just be done with anybody. That I was glad it was with him, and there was no other way.
But it was okay, because I was drowning in the waves of dopamine. Ear stething, hand stething… Choking, stimulating, caressing… But always, focusing on my heart. “What?” he asked, looking at me as if seeking for an answer. Instead of something out-of-the-world nightmarish, this time I’d finally learnt to simply indulge in the moment and tell him what’s on my mind, “I’m just thinking… that I’ll let you hold my heart if I could.” It was strange, us desiring the same thing we couldn’t have, but also strangely nice that we actually desired it mutually. “I want to hold your heart in my hand… I want to wrap my fingers around it, I want to squeeze it tightly…” And he got as close to that as humanely possible, while I savoured the clutches deeply in my memory.
Eventually the sky got dark, and I couldn’t see into his turquoise eyes like before. But they were still as deep, and I actually wanted to remember how he looks like. Though it will fade away so soon, as always.
“I’ll really miss this – your heart beating into my hand.” I whispered back, “me too”.
Maybe my heart had told him, this was my peak and my end.
