Jazz and Blues: Pete Kelly’s Blues (’55) by Rowan Tucker-Meyer
As we spend the month of January celebrating the start of the 2020s and looking towards the future, TCM is showing movies every Wednesday night that depict the life and culture of the 1920s. One of the films being shown in this spotlight is a beautiful, overlooked film called PETE KELLY’S BLUES (‘55). Based on a short-lived radio show, it tells the story of Pete Kelly (played by Jack Webb, who was also the film’s director and producer), a jazz cornetist who plays with his band at a speakeasy in Kansas City. The film is rich in 1920s atmosphere and contains all of the classic tropes that characterized the era: the gangsters, the flappers, the speakeasies and, most importantly, the music.
Although not exactly a musical, music is central to PETE KELLY’S BLUES. The film opens with a scene of a New Orleans jazz funeral, and though it is only tangentially related to the film’s narrative, this scene sets up one of the key themes of PETE KELLY’S BLUES: Jazz is a music of pain and grief, but it takes these negative feelings and infuses them with an attitude of perseverance, transforming them into a source of joy and hope. Pete Kelly lives a sad and lonely life, but his music gives him solace. (The term “blues” in the film’s title refers both to the music which gives him purpose and the troubles that haunt his life; these two things are represented by one word because they are so inextricably linked.) He has developed a tough-guy persona to cope with the toughness of prohibition, but this makes it even more difficult for him to deeply connect with anyone or anything but his music. Late in the film, a character remarks, “You don’t want to get married, Pete, unless you find a girl who looks like a cornet.”
But even his music can no longer bring him happiness when his artistic freedom becomes stifled by the gangsters who control everything and push him around. Films set in the prohibition era tend to romanticize it, and while PETE KELLY’S BLUES is certainly filled with the exuberant energy that we associate with the period, it also goes deeper than that. It doesn’t shy away from the darkness. It shows us the serious economic and moral dilemmas that arose during prohibition. We see how, beneath the carefree veneer of jazz and alcohol, there is an ominous sense of foreboding that infects the nightclub where Pete plays. The film contains a few passing references to World War I, and we get the impression that the aftermath of the war has left these characters with a real feeling of hopelessness. The music is cheerful, but for both the musicians and the listeners the cheerfulness conceals deep fear. Its unrelenting frivolity eventually serves as a cruel counterpoint to the bleakness of Pete’s situation.
The music itself is excellent. Most of the music in the film is provided by Pete Kelly’s band, but the most remarkable scenes in PETE KELLY’S BLUES are the vocal performances by Peggy Lee and Ella Fitzgerald. Lee received an Academy Award nomination for her performance as Rose Hopkins, the alcoholic singer who Pete Kelly hires as part of his band at the behest of her gangster boyfriend. Lee performs beautifully, both as an actress and a singer, but what is especially striking about her performance is how she conveys her character through her musical numbers. Rose, like many of the characters in PETE KELLY’S BLUES, is a tragic figure, and Lee is able to reflect this tragedy in her singing. Her voice is simple, sad, wise and filled with pain. Even when the song is upbeat, there is still some resignation and world-weariness behind her smile.
And then there is Ella Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald plays Maggie Jackson, a singer who works at another speakeasy. Her character is entirely inessential to the story and she exists solely to punctuate the film with two magnificent performances. It is truly an incredible gift to see this beautiful, pristine color footage of one of the greatest singers of all time in her prime. Though not integral to the film, Fitzgerald’s scenes are simply delightful, both within the context of the film and as a historical document.
Among the many interesting films being shown as part of TCM’s spotlight on cinematic depictions of the Roaring Twenties, PETE KELLY’S BLUES is not one to be missed. It’s a lovely film and an excellent way to mark the start of the new decade.

3. Savannah Smiles Dueling Pianos Saloon
Located just steps from River Street in Savannah’s Historic District, this dueling piano bar has been delighting locals and visitors for almost 20 years. Savannah Smiles is an all-request show in which four piano players duel it out for the audience’s accolades. The bar’s claim to fame is that the audience decides what the musicians play. They have the ability to play everything, from jazz to rock to rap to country. The menu is pub-grub with standards such as chicken fingers, fries, mozzarella sticks and jalapeño poppers. There is a full bar which includes an extensive beer and liquor listing.
4. The Pirates House
The Pirates House is a preserved seaman’s tavern dating from the late 18th-century. Today, it doesn’t have quite the nefarious reputation and welcomes landlubbers for lunch or dinner in one of their 15 unique dining rooms. While dining, guests can enjoy its peg beamed rooms, nautical displays and curio collections. The extensive menu features traditional Southern dishes of steak, chicken, seafood and ribs.
The Pirates House is a also popular destination for visitors hoping to catch a sighting of one of Savannah’s legendary ghosts. Legend has it that a sea caption still haunts the Pirates’ House on moonless nights.
5. Jen's and Friends
Consistently rated one of the top bars in Savannah with an award winning Happy Hour, Jen’s and Friends located in the Historic District is home to more than 300 martinis and 200 beers. It is a truly unique drink experience. The cozy bar receives accolades from locals and tourists alike as one of their favorite hangouts.
Here is just a sample of the unique martini offerings: Rice Crispie Martini, White Elephant Martini, Bubble Gum Martini, Banana Cream Pie Martini, Snicker-doodle Martini, Elvis Martini and Watermelon Lemondrop Martini. While the martinis are sophisticated, their food menu is easy and simple. You basically build your own sandwich; you pick the meat, cheese, condiments, chips and a side.
6. Rocks on the Roof
Rocks on the Roof is a plush rooftop lounge atop the Bohemian Hotel where you can enjoy handcrafted cocktails while enjoying a spectacular views of Savannah’s waterfront and skyline. You can choose an outside venue, the most coveted spot, with open-air banquettes and on chilly nights a big fire pit will keep you warm. Inside, the bar’s spacious interior has additional seating if you choose to stay indoors. The menu features tapas style small plates, perfect for sampling around the fire pit.
Rocks on the River has quickly become one of Savannah’s most popular bars. It’s the perfect spot to socialize, sip cocktails and watch the sun set.
7. Jazz'd Tapas Bar
Located in Savannah’s Historic District in the basement of the historic Kress Building, Jazz’d has the ambiance of a speakeasy. Locals and visitors alike are drawn to its sleek serpentine bar and eclectic drink menu of more than 25 types of martinis. The decor of the lounge and bar is sleek, industrial chic.
Tapas are on the menu, but with a slight American twist rather than the traditional Spanish and Mediterranean influences. There is live music six nights a week featuring blues, swing, jazz and classical vocals reminiscent of Sinatra or Savannah’s own Johnny Mercer. You might think the name Jazz’d refers to the music, but it’s more about a state of mind. One gets an All Jazz’d Up vibe at this upscale tapas bar.
8. Bonaventure Cemetery After Hours Tour
Savannah’s Bonaventure Cemetery made famous in the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, drips with Spanish Moss and has some of the most haunting grave markers which make it a very macabre destination, even during the day. At night however, it takes on a completely different turn. An after hours tour of the cemetery is a highlight of any visit to Savannah and one that only a few people get to experience as the cemetery closes to the public at dark.
Your expert local guide will take you to some of the tombstones and graves of some of Savannah’s most well known residents in the 2.5 hour tour. You will hear stories about the history of Bonaventure from the present back to Bonaventure’s plantation beginnings in 1754. The tour is a most unusual way to experience the serenity, stillness and quiet in the cemetery that is not possible during the day.
9. The Artillery
The Artillery was named Savannah’s 2017 ‘Best Craft Cocktail Bar’ by Connect Savannah and is Savannah’s newest stand alone bar. A visit to the restaurant and you will understand why. The Artillery is the place you go for true quality cocktails. Built in 1896, it is located in a former Georgia Hussar’s armory that housed the cavalry’s artillery and was built by the Georgia Hussar’s, a volunteer group of mounted rangers. The inside interior was designed in late 19th-century eclecticism and romanticism that will have you transported to a Parisian lounge complete with banquettes lining the walls and cane back chairs.
There are rules: no tank tops, no sandals, no hats, and silence your phone. It sets the tone. They want you to concentrate on enjoying the ambiance, cocktails and conversation. So much so, that there are buttons to summon waiters. They will only attend to you when you call so as not to disturb the conversation. Bartenders will make drinks not listed on the menu, however the cocktail list is diverse. Order the famous Artillery Punch, a Savannah classic, which is a combination of four high-quality liquors for a smooth, rather than sweet punch.
10. Bull Street
For a more memorable experience, see Bull Street from the comfort of a horse drawn carriage or a Savannah Hop-on Hop-off Trolley Tour, where you can also learn a little history.

Here’s our second round of RSVPs for the best free SXSW parties we’ve found so far. Check out Round 1 if you haven’t already, and find the full list on the SXSW tab at the top of this page. To recap:
• All of these events require you to RSVP.
• We expect that all of them will be open to people without badges or wristbands for at least part of the day (but some go badge-only at night)
• SHOW UP EARLY, have backup options, and be aware that free drinks and food may not last for the entire event
• Hit us up on Twitter for the latest SXSW updates throughout the fest, and check out daily party highlights right here in our SX Shortlist posts, starting Friday 3/10. Heard about any cool events you don’t see on the list yet? Tweet @ us or shoot us an email and let us know! Good luck out there!
Shout-out to the cool folks at Keegan’s List, Free Shit Guide, ATX Concert, Mxdwn, and OpenBarATX — check them out for some more hot party tips.
