Seen walking on Santa Monica Pier by D B Morton The Santa Monica Pier is a large double-jointed pier at the foot of Colorado Avenue in Santa Monica, California, United States. It contains a small amusement park, concession stands, and areas for views and fishing.[2][3] History Santa Monica has had several piers; however, the current Santa Monica Pier is made up of two adjoining piers that long had separate owners. The long, narrow Municipal Pier opened September 9, 1909,[6] primarily to carry sewer pipes beyond the breakers[7] and had no amenities. The short, wide adjoining Pleasure Pier to the south, also known as Newcomb Pier, was built in 1916 by Charles I. D. Looff and his son Arthur, amusement park pioneers.[8] Attractions on the Pleasure Pier eventually included the Santa Monica Looff Hippodrome building (which now houses the current carousel and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places), the Blue Streak Racer wooden roller coaster (which was purchased from the defunct Wonderland amusement park in San Diego), the Whip, merry-go-rounds, Wurlitzer organs, and a funhouse. The Philadelphia Toboggan Company built the Carousel, PTC #62, in 1922. It features 44 hand-carved horses. It was rebuilt in 1990 inside the Hippodrome. A calliope provides musical accompaniment. The La Monica Ballroom opened on July 23, 1924. Designed by T. S. Eslick with a Spanish façade and French Renaissance interior, it was the largest dance hall on the west coast, accommodating 5,000 dancers on its 15,000-square-foot (1,400 m2) hard maple floor. Country music star Spade Cooley began broadcasting his weekly television show from the ballroom in 1948, where the program remained until 1954. In the summer of 1955, the Hollywood Autocade opened at the La Monica with one-hundred famous and unusual cars, including Jack Benny's Maxwell and a Rumpler Drop Car.[9] From 1958 until 1962, the ballroom served as a roller skating rink; first as Skater's Ballroom, and later as the Santa Monica Roller Rink, where the speed skating club won many state and regional championships.[citation needed] The La Monica Ballroom was demolished in 1963. The Pleasure Pier thrived during the 1920s but faded during the Great Depression. During the 1930s, most of the amusement park facilities were closed down and its attractions sold off.[10] A breakwater was built in 1934 that provided docking for up to 100 fishing and pleasure boats near the pier.[11] The bridge and entry gate to Santa Monica Pier were built in 1938 by the federal Works Project Administration, and replaced the former grade connection. The Newcomb Pier was privately owned until it was acquired by the city in 1974.[12][13] During the 1960s and 1970s, various plans were proposed that would entail removal of the pier. The most extensive included the construction of an artificial island with a 1,500-room hotel. It was approved by the City Council, but citizens formed "Save Santa Monica Bay" to preserve the pier.[14] The order to raze the pier was revoked by the city council in 1973. Within that same year, the Carousel and Hippodrome were locations for the film The Sting. Storms swept away the protective breakwater in 1982.[11] During storms in early 1983, the pier experienced a significant loss. On January 27, there were reported swells of 10-feet during this winter storm.[citation needed] When the storm was over, the lower deck of the pier was destroyed.[15] The City of Santa Monica began repairs on March 1, 1983, when another storm rolled in. A crane which was being used to repair the west end was dragged into the water and acted as a battering ram against the pilings. Movie Monday - Sept 7th, 2020

"Best Movie of the 90's"

Last August I discussed the "Best Movie of the 80's", Back to the Future (1985) and to me that choice was a no-brainer - in my mind no other movie even came close to encapsulating the 80's like Back to the Future.

But when it comes to the 90's, well, The 90's are in a class all its own. Just look at the Film Year 1994 - it is stacked: The Shawshank Redemption; The Lion King; Forrest Gump... Then 90's closed out strong in 1999: Fight Club; American Beauty; The Sixth Sense...

So in my journey today to declare the "Best Movie of the 90's" I am going to take a deep dive into the Class of the 1990's.

The Class Clown

Dumb & Dumber (1994):

Man, Oh, Man there were some breakthrough comedies in the 90's.

Former SNL castmates brought us major laughs - Farley and Spade hitting us with Tommy Boy, Meyers and Carvey giving Wayne's World, and Adam Sandler went solo in Billy Madison & Happy Gilmore...

BUT it was a In Living Color alum from Canada that was the main attraction - I'm talking about Jim Carrey's career year of 1994 which made him the highest paid and sought out actor. He gave us Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask (the 4th highest grossing film of 1994 behind The Lion King, Forrest Gump, and True Lies), and Dumb & Dumber.

The Mask and Ace Ventura are great, but nothing hits the funny bone better than the duo of Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels.

The Burnout / Foreign Exchange Student

Trainspotting (1996):

We came a long way from the Cheech and Chong series of films in the 70's and Richard Linklater's 1993 Dazed and Confused actually took us back to the 70's - But it is Danny Boyle's Trainspotting which stands out as it not only shows us the highs of, well, getting high but also the bottomless lows.

Danny Boyle brought us humor, depression, great music from the punk bands of the UK, and of course, Ewan McGregor.

The Loner

The Blair Witch Project (1999):

In the 90's we were introduced to some groundbreaking storytellers like Tarantino and M. Night Shyamalan, but in 1999 we got a new breed of movie... The Found Footage Film.

In hindsight it's not that greatest story of all time, but it definitely gave middle schoolers of the era some serious heebie-jeebies and opened a whole new genre of horror films.

The "It" Couple

You've Got Mail (1998):

Freddie Prince Jr + Rachel Leigh Cook, Heath Ledger + Julia Stiles, Sandra Bullock + Bill Pullman, Julia Roberts + Hugh Grant, Julia Roberts + Richard Gere... All quaint couples but none can comapre to the onscreen magnetism of Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

Sure we first saw them in 1993 in Sleepless In Seattle but they solidified their onscreen relationship in Nora Ephron's, 1998's, You've Got Mail. Winning us over with quippy banter while taking us through the dawn of online dating.

The Glee Club

The Beauty and the Beast (1991) + Aladdin (1992) + The Lion King (1994):

The 90's was short-handed in Live Action Musicals but swung heavy with the Disney Renaissance which helped quench audiences' thirst for show tunes.

Now choosing between B&B, Aladdin, and The Lion King is like choosing between the which Boy Band had the best frosted tips. They are all great in their own right.

The AV Club

Jurassic Park (1993) + Toy Story (1995) + The Matrix (1999):

Whether you were a geek or a nerd - The 90's broke ground on making "dorkiness" cool with its Techinical Achievements:

Finally we were able to move away from stuttering stop animation and received a seamless moving imagery of dinosaurs on screen in Jurassic Park.

Toy Story pioneered the 3D Animation movement and revitalized the family friendly genre thus creating the Pixar powerhouse.

Then we have the Wachowski's who infused Cyberpunk with Martial Arts with a state of the art technology and a forward thinking style which all combined to create The Matrix, a film so unique that it hit an unknown gold standard. The Matrix also help shine light back on Keanu Reeves but sadly there still more is to be deisred in the black leather trench coat.

The Prom Queen

Clueless (1995):

The way people felt about 2011's Bridesmaids is the way I felt back in 1995 when I saw Clueless.

Clueless didn't win Prom Queen solely on its looks but mainly on its personality. It's Not funny for a chick-flick - It's funny, period! With a majority of leading cast being females, Clueless goes toe-to-toe with the best comedies. I cannot even count the number of repeat viewings.

The Goth Kid

Silence of the Lambs (1991):

What's the difference between The Goth Kid and The Loner...

The Goth Kid truly stands out.

This Oscar Award Winning Horror film (Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best (Adapted) Screenplay) truly gives you the willies but is hard to take your eyes off of Hannibal Lecter - I give all the credit to Anthony Hopkins, Jodie Foster, Ted Levine (Buffalo Bill) for making this a standout film.

The Best Movie of the 90's

Pulp Fiction (1994):

If you are like me the idea of attending the 10 year reunion is nonexistent, but in the back of your mind there is probably one individual you wouldn't mind catching up with one more time...

Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction.

When it was first on the scene you probably heard rumblings and rumors about Pulp Fictions antics in halls or in the workplace and when you finally got your first viewing it totally lived up to expectations.

It was fresh and nostalgic all at the same time with its nonlinear story and its pop culture bantar and boomer music.

Samuel L. Jackson, John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, Ving Rhames, Tim Roth, Harvey Keitel, and Christopher Walken deliver 8-finger-death-punch of loveable characters and quotable lines.

Pulp Fiction was Tarantino's second outing but arguably his mostly highly regarded film. His writing on True Romance put his foot in the door, Reservoir Dogs gave him credibility, but Pulp Fiction made him a household name - no matter how rated "R" his films were.

I declare Pulp Fiction to be the Best Movie of the 90's:

No doubt, Holly had dreaded bumping into her ex-flings on the island. Undeniably awkward meetings, especially when she is still reeling from her husband’s untimely death — of course, not so much from his death as much as the aftershocks that came with it. But in the end, they’d manifested in the same way. Lucky for her, since she’s still obligated to mourn her husband’s passing, but little did anyone know that flashes of her husband still existed in the one thing she found solace in: her son.

A cosmic joke if there is ever one, but she loves him anyways, with all her heart and soul. The nanny is off today, and hyped from getting off from a half-day at school, Declan is practically bouncing off the walls, and she isn’t quite sure how to manage him. Silently praying for no meltdowns, she pulls out the frozen dino nuggets for his lunch, sticking them in the oven. Of course, not before she pulls out a bottle of cheap Merlot, the urge for her five-o’clock drink hitting an hour-and-a-half early.

Fifteen minutes later, she pulls the nuggets from the oven when she hears the doorbell ring. Unexpected, it causes her to drop the metal tray with a resounding clang!, dinosaur-shaped chicken bouncing all over the floor, leaving crumbs that she’d step on days later with mild disgust. “Shit!” Holly yells, not thinking, and immediately, Declan is a parrot, mimicking her curse word in spades — shit! shit! shit! — and she groans.

“Declan,” she shouts, shuffling to the door, “language.” And she opens the door, expecting the postman with a package, or perhaps her nanny, ready to surprise her with a visit — but he’s quite possibly the last person she wants to see. “Oh. Jamie.” She furrows her brow, exhaling. The air is tense, and even Declan pipes down, curious to see who’s at the door. “Right. You’re here for your charger?” She points behind her, nodding. And then she smiles, sweet; too genuine if that’s possible. “Oh my god, come on in. I’ll get that for you.”

Smokey brand Movie Reviews: Sexual Tyrannosaurus

A few months back, i reviewed one of my all-time favorite films; Alien. I absolutely adore Alien. Horror films don’t really work on me, at all, but Alien pulled that sh*t off effortlessly. That flick was the first movie to ever really scare me. The performances, the direction, the atmosphere, the aesthetic; It was all incredible. A few months later, i stumbled upon a film called Predator in my Grandpa’s Beta Max collection. I was curious and checked it out as he took a nap. My mind was blown. This movie was everything that Alien was not, and i loved ever second of it. How was that a thing? How can something be the opposite of what i adore, and i still adore it? I wanted to revisit that flick, like i did Alien, and see if my adoration for this movie has held up over these past few decades.

The Great

Out the box, i have to commend the dialogue in this flick, man. It’s outstanding. It’s full of those great, 80s action, one-liners that you can’t hep but love. “I ain’t got time to bleed” and “You are one, ugly, motherf*cker” are just classics. Absolute classics.

Arnold Schwarzenegger as Alan "Dutch" Schaefer is the archetype for 80s action star. You can keep all of your Commandos and Cobras and Rambos. Give me Dutch Schaefer and we are good. This was my first experience with Schwarzenegger and made me an instant fan.

Jessie Ventura was f*cking hilarious as Blain Cooper. Dude was always great on the mic, you can tell just by looking at his time in wrestling, so this character fit him perfectly. All of that macho bravado and casually sexist rhetoric is hilarious. I imagine cats nowadays would fined that character problematic, most likely this entire movie come to think about it, but I'm too old to be offended by every little thing. This movie and this character is a product of it’s time an that needs to be taken into account when giving it a viewing.

I want to give a shout out to the late, great, Kevin Peter Hall. This gentle giant plays the actual Yautja, the Jungle Hunter, and he does it without uttering a word. Every move of this beast was so animalistic, so alien, that it strikes a deep chord with the audience. I bought that this massive, reptilian, monstrosity was from another wold and so much of that has to do with Hall’s brilliant physical performance.

The rest of the cast was pretty dope, too. Sonny Landham, Bill Duke, Elpidia Carrillo, Carl Weathers, and Shane black all turn in great supporting performances. I particularly like Weathers, landham, and Duke but i need to make specific mention of Peter Cullen. That’s right, Optimus Prime, himself, is the voice you hear, when the Predator does his shrieking. That sh*t is awesome!

While we’re on the subject of vocalizations, i have to tip my hat to the sound design in this flick. My, goodness, is it great! I mean, the Predator shrieks and hisses are ridiculous but the eerie ambiance of the jungle sets the mood perfectly. The little clicks, the overlapping rampage shootings, the epic score; All of it it adds as much to this film as Schwarzenegger or Hall. This movie would not be the same without the sound effects to help carry that emotion.

Speaking of effects, this movie has some of the best. I grew up on 80s films so practical sh*t will always hold a special place in my heart. Matte paintings, miniatures, in-camera optical effects, and suits will always take precedent over computer imagery for me and The Predator has two of the best examples of this tactile film making; The cloaked Yautja and the Yautja suit, itself. Stan Winston built this thing on the fly, after scrapping the original design. The f*cker is amazing in every aspect, and very uncanny valley, which lends itself to the extraterrestrial nature of the film.

The action in this thing is some of the best the 80s have to offer. It’s over-the-top, absolutely ridiculous, and delightfully tongue-in-cheek. I love how everything is just slathered in a thick, pungent, sticky, Masculinity as toxic as it is vibrant. It’s sweaty, filthy, muscly, goodness that is unapologetic about it’s violence. Predator is absolutely reptile brain viewing, for sure. That sh*t is rare nowadays but quite prevalent way back when. I miss this type of movie sometimes.

It takes a steady hand to manage all of these egos and effects and still coalesce al of that chaotic energy into one, digestible, film. The director of this flick had to have the patience of a saint to take on such a challenge but John McTiernan nailed that sh*t. Dude has a number of hits under his belt, Die Hard and The Hunt For Red October for example, but those came after Predator. It was never a question of talent but more ability. McTiernan delivers both in spades, gifting the art form, arguably one of it’s best examples in action, ever.

The Verdict

I still love this movie. It’s absolute, 80s testosterone, He-Man, nonsense. There is no subtlety to be found in this movie whatsoever. It’s full on, Rambo-esque chaos and it’s glorious to see. Where Alien is this tight, atmospheric, exercise in panic, Predator is this garish, wide-open, deceptively horrifying, action extravaganza. The script is tight, the pacing is brisk, and the direction is focused. There isn’t much of a story to tell, it’s basically the bones of a narrative used to string together ridiculous set-pieces, but it’s one of the best, brainless, explosion riddled, blockbusters out there. The dialogue is outstanding, the one-liners come fast and furious, which is testament to the writing but the real gem here are the performances given by the main cast. These Beefaroni ass f*ckers are great, Schwarzenegger in particular.

This role is what made me pay attention to him. This role is what lead me to Terminator and Conan and Total Recall and True Lies. Even with all of that awesome under his belt, it was his Dutch that made me a fan. Predator is not a great movie but it is a fun ass time with outstanding performances, saturated in this macabre camp that infects every aspect of this production. It’s Bayhem at it’s best, vapid action overlord, executed by a director who is competent in his craft, not lost in his ego. If you’ve never seen it, definitely check it out. It’s totally worth a watch. Keep in mind, though, if you’re triggered easily, this might set you off. It’s completely 80s in tone and sensibilities. If you can’t separate that, definitely give this one a pass.

I speak with a stutter (it’s not as bad as it used to be when I was little but I still have it and I’m still kind of insecure about it)

Refer back to my weighing over 200 pounds: I don’t even look it, and it’s kind of a trip to see women weigh less than me who are freaking huge. I’m as big as I am because the other alternative was literally starving to death: I almost became an anorexic when I was 13, and it came to a head when I was 19 and wouldn’t stop losing weight from depression. So as part of my recovery, I reconciled my relationship with food, and I just started eating. I’m trying to get up to 230 and tbh, I wouldn’t mind climbing up to 240.

It’s funny because I feel like such a rebel liking Joey as much as I do. The latest thing is to like fat boys and “dad bods”, and even taking it further and getting like almost morbid about it--when I was writing Have Your Cake I often lurked in the feedism tags on here to grasp the idea of the community; when I visit them now, the latest thing is to be like “this lifestyle is totally gonna kill you but you’re sooo hot so keep it up!”. This almost feels akin to when Audrey Hepburn came on the beauty scene with her thin elegance, the reaction to all of the full figured woman: he’s a slim, lush, gorgeous man who needs a lot more love (”raw beauty if I ever did see it” as Mr. Lang put it).

I’ve always wanted to get inked but I never know what to ink myself with, or where to put it for that matter.

The one time I ever cut my hair, like had it cut short, was 20 years ago in the first grade. The longest it’s ever been was down to the halfway point of my thigh when I was... 15? Right now it’s down around my butt.

Recovering cutter: I started in 2006 after my grandpa passed and then I stopped; did it again after my parents split in 2011, and again after Chris passed; I’ve been clean since August 22, 2017, three months following his death.

Chris was a fan of my art. It’s true! My little cartoons never would’ve become the entities they are now without him.

My cartoons have been labelled everything from “grunge” to “metal” to (recently) “emo”. I’m actually fine with just any label you throw at them: just don’t call them anime because that’s not technically correct (anime is animation; manga is printed works, and even that’s bit of a stretch)--my writing meanwhile has been simply labelled “unusual”

I’ve always been a fic writer, but I never actually wrote-wrote a fanfic until I was a freshman in high school. I never went online with a fic until 2013 and then I pretty much stopped it for a few years to focus on school and preserving my mental health until earlier this year with Have Your Cake and Eat It.

Fuuuuuuuck I love food. Yeah, when I say you’re better off asking me what I don’t like I mean it. I will eat just about anything (i’m actually surprised I’m not fat tbh). I’m as much a lady of the flesh as I am a lady of intellect.
