Film studios aren't often able to disclose the budgets of their films. But there are ways to determine the cost of a film. Movies have to make money through a variety of sources beyond ticket sales. These include: ancillary revenue, sequels, merchandise, TV rights, and streaming. What's the word on box office profits? 1. Theatrical Revenue Tickets for movie theaters are the primary source of income for films. Whether a standard experience or an extravagant one the number of seats used during the filming process of a movie is directly linked to its overall potential for revenue. The big box office numbers you read about in the media are based on gross domestic and international revenues. Before the money is transferred to the studios they must deduct the costs. Then there's the sales tax and the shares of cinemas - which typically range from 40 to 45 percent. That's before the actors' share and the other distribution costs. A movie isn't considered profitable when the box office revenue exceeds twice the amount that was invested in its production. This is why some movies that have huge profits such as "Harry Potter" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" have to declare losses on their financial statements. Don't be too quick to judge. These losses are due to international sales and marketing. 2. Television Rights In the last few years, the rights for television market has experienced an abrupt shift. Pay-per-view and dedicated sports channels platforms have been fighting against broadcasters who are traditional, and tech giants have also gotten into the fray. Broadcast Rights (excluding Te Mangai Paho Funding) refers to the right to broadcast the Programme(s) as part of a linear television broadcast service using satellite, terrestrial, cable or fibre transmission network to allow public display and streaming, which includes delay or simultaneous retransmission or distribution, as well as making it available to the Internet or mobile broadcasting technology. After a glut of movies such as Fast X and Spider-Verse, the summer movie season began to slow down. Both Greta Gerwig's Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s atomic-bomb drama Oppenheimer two summer movies with huge budgets, did not perform. There are a few franchises that have not brought in the money neither. We profile the top performers and losers of this summer's box office. 1. The Fate of the Furious With a reported $100 million in revenue, The Fate of the Furious (aka Fast & Furious 8) was able to frighten away rivals and is now nearing the point of overtaking Beauty and the Beast for the top domestic film of the year. The film also set records on the international market. In China, it opened with $190 million -- the highest ever opening for this series. It's predicted to be among the fastest films to cross $1 billion worldwide in 2017. 2. Spider-Man Far Away From Home Spider-Man: Far From Home is a Marvel Studios release that opened on Wednesday and lasted 6 days (Wednesday-Monday), reenergized the viewers after a tough summer. The sequel exceeded the previous record of its predecessor in a big way. Tom Holland returns as the wise-cracking web-slinger from a film which sees him join Nick Fury and Mysterio on an educational trip to Europe. This is set to be the very first Sony MCU film to reach the threshold of $1 billion globally. 3. Avengers: Endgame

The Avengers come together following the events of Infinity War to reverse Thanos’s actions and save their world. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Captain America Chris Evans, Black Widow Scarlett Johansson and Thor Chris Hemsworth are the survivors. Endgame's anticipation was intense and the anticipation paid off since the movie set records on its opening weekend. The film is also predicted to reach $2 billion in the world this is something no other film has ever accomplished. 4. The LEGO Movie 2 - The Second Part The first Lego Movie was released in 2014. The sequel to JJ Arams' Force Awakens has joined the exclusive group of 32 films that have reached the $1 billion mark. The film will soon beat Beauty and the Beast, which was the most viewed film released in the year 2017. Despite the fact that it polarized some fans, Episode VIII was a big success for the franchise. 7. The Lego Movie 2 - The Second Part The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part made $34.4 million in the last weekend to top the box office. The film fell short of Warner Bros. and tracking services' projections. The sequel was a massive success but it lost some of the appeal that the first film possessed. This could explain why the movie wasn't quite as popular. 8. The Lego Batman Movie The original Lego Movie is a huge success. It was an absolute blast, even though it did not receive the same scores as its Pixar rival (a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.8 on IMDB). It's unfortunate that this sequel doesn't seem quite as entertaining. Perhaps it's over saturation and there are two spinoffs that have been out (The Lego Batman Movie and The Lego Ninjago Movie) Or maybe the public weren't keen on seeing any more from this series. 9. The Lego Batman Movie 2 The Lego Batman Movie 2 The Second Part Warner Bros.'s animated sequel fell short in its attempt at appealing to older audiences, as it did with its predecessor. Fifty Shades Darker & John Wick 2 were able to fend off the competition of Warner Bros. Will Arnett, Elizabeth Banks, Rosario Dawson, and Zach Galifianakis all return as voice actors. The theme of the film is that optimism can be a positive force for good. 10. The Lego Batman Movie After the commercial and critical popularity of The Lego Movie, Warner Bros. was quick to begin planning another sequel. The movie, however, never happened. Chris Pratt is joined by Elizabeth Banks and Zach Galifianakis in the film. Tiffany Haddish and Maya Rudolph are also in the film. Mike Mitchell directed this movie which was based on a screenplay written by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1. The third installment of the Hunger Games series, based on the novel of the same name by Suzanne Collins. The film was written and directed by Francis Lawrence and stars Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark, Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne, Woody Harrelson as Haymitch Abernathy, Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinket, Stanley Tucci as Caesar Flickerman, Donald Sutherland as President Snow and Julianne Moore as Alma Coin. The latest installment of The Hunger Games is a somewhat slow and unfocused despite the effort of its characters. The political subtext, beautiful imagery, and many other aspects remain, however the speed is a bit slower than previous installments. They'll hopefully be able to learn from their mistakes in the fourth and final installment. The franchise finale is deserved more. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 Francis Lawrence directs the fourth and final film in the series The Hunger Games. The film is an adaptation of Suzanne Collins' 2010 novel Mockingjay. It features Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Donald Sutherland and Stanley Tucci. Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) is a symbol of the revolt she is at the forefront of the revolt against the Capitol. Now, she has to lead the charge to free Panem from President Snow's tyrannical rule. She will need to conquer a number of dangers, enemies, and moral ambiguities that test her strength as well as courage. The movie was a worldwide success, and became the highest-grossing film in the franchise. The film also won a number of awards. The film released on the 15th of November, 2015. It was the second-highest-grossing film of 2015, second only to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. They are greeted with broadcasts from the Capitol, congratulating them on their victory and promising they will be back. In District 13, Beetee breaks into the broadcast to listen to President Coin's tribute to the Mockingjay. The team decides to kill him, but Katniss refuses. She tells them that it will only make the Capitol even more angry. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 4

Following the success of The Hunger Games and Catching Fire the franchise expanded into a series of sequels. Mockingjay-Part 2 is the final film in the trilogy. The film is a post-apocalyptic thriller that's based on the second-half of Suzanne Collins' novel of the same title. Francis Lawrence returns to direct the film, and Jennifer Lawrence once again portraying Katniss Everdeen. The film also features Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark, Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne, Woody Harrelson as Haymitch Abernathy Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinket and Stanley Tucci as Caesar Flickerman. Mockingjay - Part 2 is a cut above other young adult dystopian adaptations. It skilfully blends politically charged action with elements of horror (how do you feel about those spongy white creatures that inhabit subterranean space?) It also has a dash of romance. It is anchored by a superb performance by Lawrence who effortlessly balances the strength of becoming merciless at war without losing humanity. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 5 The prequel of the blockbuster Hunger Games franchise stars Rachel Zegler as Lucy Gray Baird. The film is a follow-up to Coriolanus as he guides the female tribute from District 12 in the 10th Annual Hunger Games, decades before he is made the tyrannical President of Panem. His actions ignite rebellion as power and corruption meet at the Capitol after the World War II. The film was a massive disappointment to many of the fans who hoped that the prequel would reignite enthusiasm for Katniss' story and lead to a series of sequels. Lionsgate may find it difficult to develop more prequels of The Hunger Games due to the poor performance of the film. Lionsgate has to decide whether it wants to create more films or create a new trilogy with a distinct character.
