I left the game idle for a while and sent out several raids. Queen Ducim "Tiger-trainer" Wringmachine the Tame Requirement of Charm was among them as she was a skilled sworddwarf. I thought little of it. She'd been on the throne 3 years at this point and I had already seen her exploits before that as Glovedburies Champion, she was basically unbreakable and genuinely confident.
The Expedition to Doomgripped that fateful mid-spring claimed four lives. This may seem somewhat surprising to an outsider given that the attack was made in ratio of Goblins: dwarves of roughly 100:1 (not including civilians), but the Dwarves of the Lone Vestibule are hardy.
However, this Age of Goblins is cruel. and that is how Zasit Lancecastle the Closed has become King of the Lone Vestibule.
He earned the Epithet the Closed after he beat a few dwarves to death for not fulfilling production mandates and is a former member of our guard.
He's an odd King for sure, given that he is disgusted by power. A look through his profile reveals that he's got quite a reputation the Fortress militia and is the Master of two militia captains. His only friend is Urist Litastebal a fellow Marksdwarf, which is strange given that Urist doesn't really think much of learning and is instead emotional and romantic. The main I know him for is his scholarship as I often see him pondering diseases and social behaviour in the library. Yes, a strange king indeed.
New artifact! Enteredwork was my second fort in this world so it's kind of weird to see stuff I've played through become established History that dwarves make art about.
Glovedburies is neat! what's the fort's most interesting feature/achievement so far?
The dwarves would probably say the grand temple complex dedicated to the dwarven pantheon, of the Channels of Jumping. It's three storeys tall and the walls are covered in engravings.
All the walls and floors are engraved with pieces like this...
Here's a drawing for a better idea of the scale:
But I would say the most interesting achievement is THE MACERATOR
As you can see it's a pretty deep pit trap, with a bunch of silver spikes at the bottom. But the real reason it's so interesting is that it claimed four lives before it was finished due to me designating the channelling badly.
The first thing the dwarves see through the trees is the war dog Zefon Tekkudtabar. The first dwarf to arrive is the Wrestler Zuglar Betanavuz(Calmmines). and she's missing an eye.
And brings news of the squad's raid.
Bad news 1: they have no spoils.
Bad news 2: Atir Frostbolted and Inod Verselances won't be returning to Glovedburies, ever.
Now for the good news.
Good news: they killed 3 trolls and 21 goblins
The dwarves mourn the deaths of their comrades and a sombre mood of silence settles on the fortress.
But something that hasn't been felt in a long time in this world is felt with this loss.
And that is hope. Hope that there is an end to the Age of Goblins.
Ineth Biseksodel, Clothier, woke up on the 25 Moonstone thoroughly unaware of the tragic fate that would befall him. Two months ago, he had been promoted to the position of Civilian militia captain, responsible for keeping the citizens of Glovedburies in fighting form. .
As he carried some llama wool cloth to the workshop he felt a strange feeling come over him as if a voice from another world were calling him...
Ineth dropped the cloth at the table and began demanding things for his creation.
Cut gems, plant cloth, cut gems, plant cloth
And that was when I knew it was going to be a few days. Glovedburies has many gems, that was a problem, but if there is one thing you cannot get in the Mountainhome, it's plant cloth. Being at war with the elves we don't trade for it and we can normally take the clothes off the bodies of the deceased goblins, in fact Ineth wore a troll fur tunic. So there was no plant cloth.
28th Moonstone
The Wealthy Pillars are called up from the caverns. and stationed at the clothier's shop. Ineth continues to mutter his demand for plant cloth in a far-off voice, detached from the peril he is in.
I expel him.
The Swordmaster Avuz Takuthatir (slayer of the forgotten beast Ner) makes the first strike by scratching Ineth's foot to prevent him from fleeing. More blows land as Ineth runs for the nest boxes. His left arm goes flying. Bitten a Great Horned owl, Ineth goes berserk shortly before he is decapitated.
His blood soaks into the sand floor staining it red.
