Album Reviews #66 - Urban Hymns by The Verve

Urban Hymns is an album that, while not without its shortcomings—some tracks tend to overstay their welcome and get rather dull—it has an undeniable charm and depth. It’s an album I associate with sunny days, not just because of its lush, upbeat atmosphere, but also for how it evolves with a delicate grace, like the slow unfolding of a flower. The music works within a slow to mid-tempo range, evoking the gentle breeze of a late afternoon.

Beneath the seemingly buoyant surface, there's a lingering sadness woven throughout the songs. The most powerful moments on the album come when that sense of melancholy intersects with the more uplifting rhythms, creating a bittersweet beauty. The music feels like looking out at an expansive blue sky, filling you with a sense of joy and wonder, but also a quiet sadness, this sadness I don't know where it comes from, it might be loneliness, it might be a reminder of the fleeting nature of existence, but the sadness makes the happy moments feel a lot more real when it is present. There’s an elegance and grace to Urban Hymns, an awareness of its underlying sorrow that embraces fully, presenting it alongside its beauty.
