SoyCon 10: The Finale

It seems my original post on this got lost in the ether. Sad, but it happens.

So let’s talk about SoyCon 10. I’d never done SoyCon before, which was a cosplay gathering in the Chicago area for the last several summers. This year, for their finale, they wanted to hold a true, one-day convention. And it was great!

I found out about SoyCon while checking out animecons.com - a seriously helpful site. I was looking for cons for me and cons for an artist friend who wants to start selling. Since admission was $5 to pre-register or $10 at the door..I couldn’t resist. I, and several friends, including @lechevaliermalfet​ @someoldmemory​ and @el-draco-bizarro​ drove up to Schaumburg, IL this past Saturday (July 22, 2017) for SoyCon 10: The Finale. 

Let’s start with the Venue: Venue 929, which appears to be a multi-use location. For a small event like SoyCon, this was a great space. There were only two things I could consider tweaking if SoyCon is revived by another of its staff now that the founder has stepped down. 

First, there should probably be only one panel going on in the sanctuary space, rather than two at once. It looked like only one side of the room at a time got any love, even if two panels were running together. 

Second, I might have re-organized the viewing room. Sure, it made sense to divide down the middle, since there were two screens. But people only had a narrow aisle on the side to walk down, or the wide middle aisle (which meant they then had to walk in front of a screen), if they wanted to get through to the game room. 

Otherwise, though, this was great! And even those are minor nitpicks.

Panels: I loved the panel options. I didn’t attend all of them, since I did get a little distracted by Pokemon Go and the game room, but I enjoyed what I attended. Everything was based around cosplay, since that’s the heart of SoyCon - a bunch of cosplayers getting together to goof off. It fit perfectly and I was impressed at the skill and knowledge of the guests.

Guests: All people familiar with cosplay and super knowledgeable. I wasn’t familiar with any of them before now, but you can bet I’ll be paying more attention in the future!

Screenings: Some great material, but I didn’t stop to watch any. 

Gaming: Gaming areas always get busy, and SoyCon’s was no exception! I love getting to try out new games, and while I lost all but one round of the fighting game I tried, it was fun. 

Price: Dirt cheap, and reasonable for a small, one-day con. 

Dance: Did not attend, as dances aren’t usually my thing. But they had two DJs with A-Cen Soap Bubble experience, so I’m sure that it was a blast.

Cosplay Contest/Masquerade: This had more entrants than I expected, being used to Anime-Zap levels of participation for smaller events. There were roughly 25 entrants, and an Arda Wigs rep was on hand to help issue some of the prizes. 

Karaoke: This was karaoke with a twist: Sudden Death Karaoke, in which the guest DJs spun a tune - and participants might not know the lyrics! It let to some great crowd interaction and fun. I sort of wish that @someoldmemory and I hadn’t chickened out of joining the line.  

It ended in a mini dance party.

Vendors: Just a small Artist Alley that perfectly utilized the allotted space. I saw some incredible things, including a plush Katamari…but I was too broke to buy it. 

Cosplay Foam Battles: Didn’t try it but I wish I had. It looked like a blast. Maybe someday.

Atmosphere: Amazing. Sure, being new, I found myself realizing a lot of these folks knew each other before. But whether you were a first-timer or a returner, it didn’t seem to matter. Fun was everyone’s goal, and interactions were positive.
