Happy Latino heritage month!!!

i've decided to do a little challenge where everyday until October 15th, I draw a latino character! today's character is Isabella, who is Mexican-Jewish.

i got huge inspiration for this challenge from southpauz on instagram, where she drew a black character for every day of black history month, so please check her work because she's how I even got the idea for this. i don't know for sure if i'll stick it through the entire challenge, but i'll try my best!

Thank you! And I would really mainly recommend studying how other (POC) artists stylize hair, and simultaneously referring to photos of people of color for inspiration + understanding texture.

I think, it's all about the context of your style really. I learned a very looong time ago when I was a kid on how to draw curly hair specifically because I had big ol' curls myself + I was subconsciously studying hair styles of the like in cartoons or media I enjoyed!

The thing is, just don't overthink the shapes. At least for cartoony styles like anime, or one like mine where the texture mainly comes from the coloring + rendering, the structure can be super simple to follow if you don't overthink it.

^ Taking this newer WIP of my OC's really quick for reference! If you look closely, the shapes are mostly just little bumpy cloud-like chunky strokes! And while this isn't rendered hair yet, you can still read it as the texture it's intended as.

^ An older doodle of my other OCs to show other hairstyles.. While I draw braids + locs a smidge differently now, this was still composed of wobbly lines that I defined a bit with other squiggles! Not so hard I promise! And obviously, I can always do better + I will continue to study/improve.

ETC.! (I love how they draw hair in general LOL it's all so good..) Hopefully this helps a bit!

hey! do you have any tips on drawing expressions, esp. with black lips? i rly love ur art of black characters, and as a black artist myself its a little embrasing that im having trouble wit this lol

that's fair lol. Honestly the biggest thing that's helped me learn expressions and stylizing characters was studying other artists (i'd recommend checking out southpauz and yap1co!! they're real big inspos of mine and they both do a rly sick job with expressions, esp when it comes to black characters)

I tried to doodle up a few examples to show my own approach. i'm ngl i ain't great at explaining, but usually I try to go for soft rectangular shapes when drawing lip details. for making expressions in general tho I guess i just try to include teeth in any way possible. it forces me to experiment with mouth shapes more, especially w more exaggerated stuff

As a thanks to my friend @sad-fat-cat-mom for the excellent Zim & Ace commission she made for me, I wanted to draw something with our favorite Green Bois, too. For some reason this notorious exchange from the unaired POWERPUFF GIRLS live-action series popped into my head, & I thought it'd be hilarious with these two.

So let me just preface this with the fact that I’m also posting this on Instagram but… instagram is currently being really shitty to artists because of AI bullshit soooo, you know what, I’ve decided to post this here too.

If you remember for pride month 2022 I drew 5 queer couples from media as a way to celebrate. So this year, partially inspired by what the amazingly talented @southpauz does for Black History Month I’m going to do a Pride Month Art Challenge!

For the next 30 days I’m going to be posting art of queer characters from media, but specifically to reflect mine being a gay man I’ll be drawing male loving male couples.
