Been an active day/night in SoCal! You can see the Post Fire start and grow large, and a second fire blossom to the east of it later.

Quebec don’t have the resources to deal with all the wildfires right now so emergency management has to pick and choose which areas to protect and one of the settlements (Clova) that didn’t make the cut is a village right next to wear my mom grew up in La Tuque fuck fuck fuuuuuuuuuuck even though everyone was evacuated this is so horrible. Something about the phrasing of it (“we are going to be obliged to let Clova burn.”) makes it feel like the end of the world
#I don’t think it’s been fully emphasized how much that area is full of lakes this is so fucked up this area is not supposed to burn#southern California is dry as hell and fires keep the region healthy. Val d’Or is literally hundreds of lakes#the fire outside of Ottawa is literally called the Centennial Lake wildfire#nothing will ever be the same or okay again and if I start crying I will never stop#Canadian wildfires

All the winter rain here in Southern California makes this a very dangerous fire season because there will be more to buttress.

Genuine question: isn't Australia part of the Pacific ring of fire, and actually prone to earthquakes and therefore also tsunamis? My geography and geology are a little shaky, but I seem to remember that at least from some documentaries, and I know for certain that there have been volcanic incidents in Aōtera, which is right next door.
okay I’ll say it nicer:
australia was colonised according to the myth of terra nullius (or empty land). ever since the very early days of colonialism, the land has been framed as something untameable and unliveable. this has justified acts of violence against the first peoples here, in that they are seen as non-people. it has justified the destruction of sacred land in the goal of making australia look more european. (an example: our capital city contains a man-made lake that is now nothing better than a fetid carp pond. it’s disgusting and unnatural). basically, the idea of “taming australia’ has justified endless harm
“everything in australia is weird and dangerous” is not just some silly meme phrase, it is something that arcs back to the very beginning of white settlers laying claim to ‘australia’. and personally I am very sick of seeing it thrown around like it means nothing
#for real tho i live in southern california and people get..... weird about our native landscapes#like complaining about fire danger and how evil it is when its an integral part of our really unique ecosystem#were one of a handful of Mediterranean climates in the world.... all of which have been considered exotic by european colonisers#(the others are the actual Mediterranean southwest africa around cape town parts of chile and argentina and southwestern Australia)#theres also a propensity i think for the local features to get 'normalised' by culture around us so they arent seen as remarkable....#and therefore its fine to just get rid of it and develop it to be like other places and treat it however is most convienent#the number of times i hear assholes complain about environmental regulations here or pets they cant have due to risk of invasion l#or even the people saying its so easy to solve the energy crisis just put stuff in the desert theres nothing there boils my blood#its all so incredible and wonderful and beautiful and it kills me that people dont respect it#i wager it would kill me more if people had also been using that dismissal to ignore and marginalise and do even worse to my peoples#and sacred traditions and everything with that

It's nearly that time of year again, folks!
Practical tip for those dealing with wildfire smoke now: you can make a very effective air filter for a reasonable amount of money using a box fan & one of those filters meant for your furnace.
Also, I've managed to pick up 2 of the box fans for very cheap/free from yard sales. Make sure you get a filter rated for wildfire smoke, I think this one cost about $20.
These make a huge difference in the indoor air quality.

Singin' in the Rain
Singin’ in the Rain
Speaking for everyone in California, because why wouldn’t I, let me assure the country and the world that the vast majority of us here on the left coast are okay. More than 24.5 trillion gallons of water has fallen from the skies since the end of the year and it is continuing to pour at least through this weekend. Yet we soldier on. In Hollywood we know how to make it work I mean, we hosted…
