#32 The Sun on My Head - Geovani Martins | Brazil | short stories | 128 pages
In The Sun on My Head, Geovani Martins recounts the experiences of boys growing up in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro in the early years of the twenty-first century. Drawing on his childhood and adolescence, Martins uses the rhythms and slang of his neighborhood dialect to capture the texture of life in the slums, where every day is shadowed by a ubiquitous drug culture, the constant threat of the police, and the confines of poverty, violence, and racial oppression. And yet these are also stories of friendship, romance, and momentary relief, as in “Rolézim,” where a group of teenagers head to the beach. Other stories, all uncompromising in their realism and yet diverse in narrative form, explore the changes that occur when militarized police occupy the favelas in the lead-up to the World Cup, the cycles of violence in the narcotics trade, and the feelings of invisibility that define the realities of so many in Rio’s underclass.

I am currently reading Jane Austen and the Navy by Brian Southam and I just learned that Darwin both read Persuasion and told his sisters that his captain was like Wentworth when he was travelling on the Beagel:
Having witnessed FitzRoy's dealings with "a little midshipman... you cannot imagine anything more kind & good humoured than the Captians manners were to him." [he then quoted Persuasion]... Charlotte Wedgewood congragulated him... "I am delighted that you have fallen in with a Captain Wentworth - such an extraordinary peice of good luck."
When his sister asked if he wanted a copy of Persuasion, Darwin replied, he had no need of a copy: "there is no danger of my forgetting it"
And now I have a greater admiration for Darwin!

Nice video showing how to render Ann Southam’s Rivers on modular, going into the structure of the of patterns along with how she was combined elements of both minimalism and serialism
—-
Ok started to look more into her (i’m just learning about her) and far she seems amazing. She was an out lesbian in the 1970s experimenting with tape and synthesizers as a way to explore feminist concepts without relying on words
Tumblr media
It’s also nice to have a pioneer of tape music to reference who isn’t Steve Reich (who made fucked up racist comments in the 60s)

TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2023
One Piece (Season 1, 2023, USA/Japan)
Creators: Matt Owens & Steven Maeda (based on the manga by Eiichiro Oda)
Directors: Marc Jobst, Emma Sullivan, Tim Southam & Josef Wladyka
Mini-review:
I'm not gonna lie, although I've been an avid manga/anime fan for years, the sheer size of One Piece felt too daunting, so I never dared to start it. After all this time, this live action adaptation felt like the right (and simple) way to enter this famed world. And I'm so glad I did it. It's engaging, ambitious and, most of all, fun as f**k. It lovingly embraces the campiness that comes with most mangas and animes, and makes the most of it. I do have some qualms about the cinematography and the pace, which feels a bit rushed at times. However, the show makes up for that with its gorgeous productions values and, most importantly, its mindblowingly perfect cast. All the actors are fantastic, and they have great chemistry too, but I'd say the MVP is Iñaki Godoy. He's an absolute superstar. Anyway, I really really enjoyed this, and I feel very tempted to start the manga. Let's hope we get more and more seasons.

Pioneers of Electronic Music.
Ann Southam
When she began to study composition seriously in 1960, a teacher, Gustav Ciamaga, introduced her to the relatively new field of electronic music.
"I loved the mucking-around quality of it," she said of her time in the University of Toronto's electronic-music studio.
"It was a combination of making things happen and letting things happen. There was no point trying to tune anything. Things would just kind of drift off. It was like a wilderness of sounds. And now that whole wonderful playground has been paved over," she said, referring to the much more sophisticated equipment available today. (source: theglobeandmail)
She founded, with Mary Gardiner, the Association of Canadian Women Composers in 1981. She was the first president (1980–'88), life member (2002), and honorary president (2007). (source: thecanadianencyclopedia)
