The Ugly “D” Word
Everywhere you turn, there are encouraging motivational quotes and advice to improve a situation in your life that isn’t serving you anymore. If you are unhappy at your job, then you should quit. If your friends don’t bring you joy, change your friends. If you don’t like where you live, move. When it comes to any area in your life, if the circumstances are not making you happy and not working for you anymore, you are encouraged to change them.
So why is marriage the exception to this rule?
In the South Asian community, divorce is perceived as an unfortunate, shameful, event --a big giant black mark on a family’s reputation. Women are expected to ‘live happily ever after’ for life, no matter what the conditions are. There is a huge generation gap, and this erroneous belief that the person you marry will meet your needs in your 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s and so on, is hurting us.
People grow. People change. And with that their needs change. It’s important not to judge people who are strong enough to realize they are unhappy and want to improve their life. They simply left a situation that no longer served them, whatever their reasons.
It’s time to change our mindset. It’s time for the South Asian community to celebrate couples who are brave enough to believe that they deserve a relationship that meets their needs. The first step is by approving of love marriages. The second is by being open minded of this simple fact that some relationships are not healthy, and an escape should not be condoned but instead encouraged.
Divorce does not have to be a big ugly word. It doesn’t mean the person is a failure, and it definitely doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with them. It takes a strong person, not a weak one, to stand up for their happiness and leave a marriage. Everyone deserves a love that is fulfilling and soul enriching. Some don’t get it right the first time, and that should not become a punishment for life.
