S.V. Dáte at HuffPost:
WASHINGTON ― For Donald Trump, Tuesday’s election has come to this: It’s either the White House or the Big House. If he wins, the coup-attempting former president, already a convicted criminal, will be able to postpone his Georgia and New York state prosecutions until he is no longer in office. As for his two federal cases, he would be able to make them disappear forever by simply ordering his attorney general to dismiss them. “Those will be dismissed on Jan. 20. Both of them,” said Ty Cobb, a former Trump White House lawyer and onetime federal prosecutor who thinks his old boss deserves prison time. “There’s a compelling interest for the country to deter this treasonous bullshit and the mishandling of sensitive information.” Trump himself confirmed he would end the federal prosecutions by firing special counsel Jack Smith in an interview last month with pro-Trump radio host Hugh Hewitt. “It’s so easy — I would fire him within two seconds,” Trump said. Smith has headed the election interference and classified documents investigations.
The New York and Georgia cases, meanwhile, would at best go into hibernation, lawyers said, because courts have ruled that presidents must have the ability to carry out their duties under the Constitution, notwithstanding state legal cases. “The state cases, because of the supremacy clause, nothing much will occur,” said Karen Agnifilio, a former prosecutor in Manhattan. “He can be sentenced in New York state, but he will not get anything that bleeds into his presidency. So maybe community service? A fine? Nothing?” A Trump victory over Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris would mark the first time in American history that voters have put a literal criminal into office. Among former presidents, only Richard Nixon even came close to facing charges for his attempt to cheat in the 1972 presidential election and his subsequent attempts to cover it up. He was preemptively pardoned by newly sworn-in Gerald Ford days after Nixon resigned from office in 1974.
Trump, in contrast, already faces three active criminal cases against him: in state court in Georgia, for his attempt to overturn his 2020 election loss there; in federal court in Washington, D.C., for his actions leading up to and during his Jan. 6, 2021, coup attempt; and in New York state court, for falsifying business records to hide a $130,000 hush money payment to a porn star days ahead of the 2016 election. There was a second federal prosecution, in South Florida based on Trump’s refusal to turn over secret documents he took with him to his Palm Beach country club upon leaving the White House, that was dismissed by U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon. Smith is appealing to have those charges reinstated. The New York case would be his most immediate threat, should he lose. A New York City jury in May found him guilty on every count. Sentencing is now set for Nov. 26. Though it is a white-collar crime and Trump is still legally a first-time offender, Judge Juan Merchan can consider Trump’s lack of remorse, the seriousness of the crime ― intended to sway the 2016 presidential election ― as well as Trump’s multiple violations of Merchan’s gag order forbidding the former president from attacking witnesses and court officers in the case.
Today, this election will determine the fate of any chance of whether Donald Trump will be held accountable for his crimes.
If he loses, he’ll be in a heap of legal trouble. If he wins, he’ll be off scot-free.

#075 - The Best News of Last Week - February 27, 2023
🐈 - Do you know Gacek, the most famous cat in Poland?
Hey there! It's Erica here, and I'm excited to share with you some of the most uplifting news stories of the week. In a world that can sometimes seem filled with negativity, it's important to focus on the positive and find inspiration in the good things that are happening around us. Let's dive into this week's collection of wholesome news!
1. 8-year-old boy missing from Washington state for 8 months is found in Missouri
A boy who has been missing from Washington state since at least mid-June was found safe in Missouri, the FBI office in Seattle said Tuesday.
Authorities said 8-year-old Breadson John had vanished by June 17, when a welfare check at his home in Vancouver, Washington, just across the state line from Oregon, determined his absence.
2. World’s biggest four-day working week trial hailed a ‘major breakthrough’
The trial of a four-day working week in the UK, the largest of its kind in the world, has been celebrated as a “major breakthrough” after the majority of participating companies announced their intention to continue with the shorter week.
The trial, which ran for six months from June last year, required firms to reduce their working hours for all employees by 20 per cent without any reduction in wages.
At least 56 out of the 61 companies confirmed they will continue with the four-day working week, while 18 of them have made the policy a permanent change.
3. This dying baby turtle survived after drifting 4,000 miles to Ireland
A family strolling on a beach in Ireland earlier this month spotted a seafarer that had washed up on the rocks. Less than a year old, the female loggerhead survived a months-long journey across the Atlantic Ocean, teeming with dangers including predators and plastic. Although she was still alive, the turtle was dehydrated, massively underweight.
They called her Cróga, the Irish word for “brave.” After finding Cróga in the northwestern part of Ireland, the family called a few groups that rehabilitate whales and dolphins. There, Cróga’s rehabilitation began.
4. A Hernando toddler found alive after being missing for nearly 24 hours
A 2-year-old boy was lost in the Florida woods for 24 hours. Everyone feared the worst. Hundreds of volunteers came out to look for him.
One volunteer came to a fork in a field: right or left? He trusted his gut, went left and soon heard a whimper. It was the little boy, crying but in good health.
I found something interesting while reading this article: If you are part of a SAR team looking for a child to not only call their name but also that they aren’t in trouble. Young children sometimes hide from potential rescuers because they’re afraid they’ll get in trouble.
5. German man remains free of the HIV virus years after receiving stem cell treatment.
Researchers are announcing that a 53-year-old man in Germany has been cured of HIV.
Referred to as "the Dusseldorf patient" to protect his privacy, researchers said he is the fifth confirmed case of an HIV cure. Although the details of his successful treatment were first announced at a conference in 2019, researchers could not confirm he had been officially cured at that time. Today, researchers announced the Dusseldorf patient still has no detectable virus in his body, even after stopping his HIV medication four years ago.
6. South Korea court recognises same-sex couple rights for first time
A South Korean court has for the first time recognised the rights of a same-sex couple in the country. In a landmark ruling, the Seoul High Court found a government health insurer did owe coverage to the spouse of a customer after the firm withdrew it when it found out the pair were gay.
The men had held a wedding ceremony in 2019, but same-sex marriage is not recognised in South Korea.
Activists say the ruling is a leap forward for LGBT rights in the country.
7. A fat cat has become the top-rated tourist attraction in a Polish city with a perfect 5-star average on Google Maps
A fat black-and-white cat called Gacek has become the top-rated tourist attraction in the Polish city of Szczecin.
Gacek has a perfect five-star rating on Google Maps. His name, pronounced gats-ek, means "long-eared bat" in Polish. Gacek first drew international attention when he appeared in a YouTube documentary in 2020

im starting to think that the government and the rest of the country don’t care about southerners whatsoever.
the government is basically saying we’re alone for Milton, that we’re not getting any help. I’ve seen the beaches and I’ve seen the devastation that Helene’s left, and this one is said to cause even worse flooding here.
But they don’t care. No one cares unless it affects them. Everyone lacks basic fucking empathy.
The south is statistically the poorest regions in America, most of us don’t have the money or means to evacuate and leave everything behind. They do this every single time.
Did they forget about what happened in New Orleans and Lousiana?
And now people are talking about some “well the people in Appalachia and Florida deserved it-“ or whatever. ??, what? I’m fucking sorry?
but land of the free and equal right?

One of the World’s Most Immigrant-Friendly Countries Is Changing Course (NYT) A late-night Uber ride from Toronto’s Pearson Airport into the city usually guarantees a good fare for the driver. But not for Sachindeep Singh on the evening of Sept. 19. A few miles into the ride, his Uber app stopped working. Mr. Singh’s work permit had expired at midnight and, like Canada, Uber was putting him on notice. Mr. Singh, 23, arrived in Canada as an international student in 2019. His immigration status permitted him to work and offered a path to permanent residence, an approach labeled “study-work-stay” on the Canadian government’s immigration website. But after inviting millions of newcomers to Canada in recent years to help lift the economy, the government has reversed course amid growing concerns that immigrants are contributing to the country’s deepening challenges around housing, health care and other issues. A series of measures unveiled this year, focused on Canada’s vast temporary residence program, has imposed barriers that have left hundreds of thousands of migrants like Mr. Singh in legal limbo.
Determination to rebuild follows Florida’s hurricanes (AP) No sooner had residents of the Bahia Vista Gulf condominium complex dug out and from Hurricane Helene than they were faced with the same daunting cleanup from new damage inflicted by Hurricane Milton. The beachfront units had been gutted, treated and dried out after Hurricane Helene and mounds of sand that had blown in from the beach had been removed. Then, less than two weeks later, Hurricane Milton barreled in and undid all the progress. “They’ve got to start the whole process over, cleaning, sanitizing, bringing in drying equipment, getting them all dried and prepped for renovations,” lamented Bill O’Connell, a board member at the complex in Venice, about an hour’s drive south of Tampa. The second hurricane “brought all the sand back on our property.” Some longtime Floridians have grown accustomed to the annual cycle of storms that can shatter and upend lives in a state known mostly for its balmy weather, sunshine and beaches. “It’s the price you pay to live in paradise,” O’Connell said. “If you want to live here with this view, beautiful sunsets, be able to go out on your boat, enjoy what Florida has to offer, you have to be willing to accept that these storms are going to come.”
Awash in oil money, Guyana promises cash, free tuition and other perks ahead of election (AP) Guyanese President Irfaan Ali announced several perks ahead of national elections next year, including free college tuition and a one-time cash payment of nearly $1,000 for every household in the oil-rich South American country. Ali also promised to cut power bills by half and to increase the monthly minimum wage from $350 to $500 starting next year as he addressed Parliament during a special session late Thursday, noting that the recently wealthy nation of nearly 800,000 people can afford to help residents via public aid programs. Guyana was once one of the poorest countries in South America despite large reserves of gold, diamonds and bauxite. But it has been awash in money after a consortium led by ExxonMobil discovered the first major oil deposits in May 2015 off the country’s Atlantic coast. In 2022, Guyana’s GDP grew by more than 60%, the highest real GDP growth worldwide that year, according to the International Monetary Fund.
Argentina’s triple-digit inflation slows, but cash-strapped workers struggle to pay bills (Reuters) Argentina’s triple-digit inflation, among the world’s highest, is starting to slow down but this offers little relief for workers whose salaries have stayed the same while costs of basic goods skyrocketed and the government slashed state subsidies. “We’re losing track of what’s expensive and what’s cheap,” said university professor Daniel Vazquez while shopping in Buenos Aires. “Prices keep going up and the only thing that isn’t going up is salaries.” Food prices increased just 2% from last month but more than tripled their level from a year ago, while housing and utility costs nearly quadrupled. Cigarettes, alcohol, healthcare, transport and communications also tracked annual inflation well above 200%.
Ukrainian recruiters descend on Kyiv’s nightlife in search of men not registered for conscription (AP) Ukrainian military recruitment officers raided restaurants, bars and a concert hall in Kyiv, checking military registration documents and detaining men who were not in compliance, media and witnesses reported Saturday. Officers descended on Kyiv’s Palace of Sports venue after a concert Friday night by Ukrainian rock band Okean Elzy. Video footage aired by local media outlets appears to show officers stationed outside the doors of the concert hall intercepting men as they exit. In the footage, officers appear to be forcibly detaining some men. Checks were also conducted at Goodwine, an upscale shopping center, and Avalon, a popular restaurant. It is unusual for such raids to take place in the capital, and reflects Ukraine’s dire need for fresh recruits. All Ukrainian men aged 25-60 are eligible for conscription, and men aged 18-60 are not allowed to leave the country.
One of the Loneliest Countries Finds Companionship in Dogs (NYT) The deceased lay wrapped in a cotton blanket, surrounded by white roses and hydrangea, angelic figurines and lit candles and incense. A wall-mounted screen displayed photographs of him. His 71-year-old companion, Kim Seon-ae, convulsed with tears as she bid farewell, caressing his head and face. Next door, young uniformed morticians prepared for his cremation. The elaborate and emotional ritual was for a white poodle named Dalkong, who was nestled in a willow basket with his eyes still open. “He was like a virus that infected me with happiness,” said Ms. Kim, who had lived with Dalkong for 13 years until he succumbed to heart disease. “We were family.” Not long ago, South Korea often made global headlines—and raised the ire of animal rights groups—for its tradition of breeding dogs for meat. But in recent years, people here have gravitated toward pets, especially dogs. They are looking for companionship at a time when more South Koreans are choosing to stay single, childless or both. More than two-fifths of all households in the nation now consist of only one person.
A once humming city, Lebanon’s Tyre is emptied by airstrikes and fear (Washington Post) As Israeli warplanes roared overhead and their bombs plunged into the suburbs of this coastal city in southern Lebanon, a man sat by the sea with his shirt off, a lonely beachgoer in a place that most people have fled. Tyre, barely 12 miles from the border with Israel, has been swiftly and viciously emptied by airstrikes, war and fear that it will all get worse. Only its most determined or defiant residents remain, weeks after the start of Israel’s military campaign. There are few lights on in the city’s apartment blocks and shops. Restaurants on a commercial strip are boarded up, some with their windows smashed. Packs of dogs roam in places. Garbage sits on corners in huge piles. The desolate scenes in Tyre, Lebanon’s fourth largest city, are a glimpse of what the spread of the war between Israel and Hezbollah could mean for the country, where so many have already fled their homes and are struggling to find somewhere safe.
Israeli Tanks Enter U.N. Peacekeeper Base in Lebanon, Drawing Protest (NYT) Israeli tanks forced their way onto a U.N. peacekeeping base in southern Lebanon on Sunday, putting the lives of the soldiers there in danger, the U.N. mission said. Hours later, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel repeated his call for the United Nations to pull the peacekeepers out of the area immediately. The tank incursion came after days of criticism of Israeli forces over attacks that have wounded at least four peacekeepers in Lebanon. Early Sunday morning, the U.N. mission said, Israeli battle tanks showed up at one of its bases. “While peacekeepers were in shelters, two I.D.F. Merkava tanks destroyed the position’s main gate and forcibly entered the position,” it said in a statement, referring to the Israel Defense Forces. Israeli soldiers, it said, requested multiple times that the base turn out its lights. While no peacekeepers were hurt, the entry of Israeli forces onto a U.N. base risked undermining its neutral status and making it a target for Hezbollah, the peacekeepers said. It said the tanks left 45 minutes later after the mission filed a protest.
Israeli strike on hospital tent camp kills 4 and ignites a fire that burns dozens (AP) An Israeli airstrike on a hospital courtyard in the Gaza Strip early Monday killed at least four people and triggered a fire that swept through a tent camp for people displaced by the war, leaving more than two dozen with severe burns, according to Palestinian medics. The Israeli military said it targeted militants hiding out among civilians, without providing evidence. In recent months it has repeatedly struck crowded shelters and tent camps, alleging that Hamas fighters were using them as staging grounds for attacks. The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in the central city of Deir al-Balah was already struggling to treat a large number of wounded from an earlier strike on a school-turned-shelter that killed at least 20 people when the early morning airstrike hit and fire engulfed many of the tents.
Cameroon bans any talk about 91-year-old President Biya’s health (Reuters) Cameroon has outlawed any discussion about the health of 91-year-old President Paul Biya, a letter shared by the interior ministry said, after Biya’s prolonged absence fuelled widespread speculation he was unwell. Earlier this week, the authorities put out statements saying the president was on a private visit to Geneva and in good health, dismissing reports he had fallen ill as “pure fantasy”. In the letter to regional governors dated Oct. 9, Interior Minister Paul Atanga Nji said discussing the president’s health was a matter of national security. From now on, “any debate in the media about the president’s condition is therefore strictly prohibited. Offenders will face the full force of the law”, Nji said. Biya has not been seen in public since attending a China-Africa forum in Beijing in early September. His failure to appear as scheduled at a summit in France last weekend further stoked public discussion about his health.
Columbus likely Spanish and Jewish, study suggests (BBC) Famed explorer Christopher Columbus was likely Spanish and Jewish, according to a new genetic study conducted by Spanish scientists that aimed to shed light on a centuries-old mystery. Scientists believe the explorer, whose expedition across the Atlantic in 1492 changed the course of world history, was probably born in western Europe, possibly in the city of Valencia. They think he concealed his Jewish identity, or converted to Catholicism, to escape religious persecution. The study of DNA contradicts the traditional theory, which many historians had questioned, that the explorer was an Italian from Genoa. Countries have argued for years over the explorer's origin, with many claiming him as one of their own. There have been an estimated 25 conflicting theories of his birthplace, including Poland, Great Britain, Greece, Portugal, Hungary and Scandinavia.

hcs because I need to keep busy
Cal's a whiner. Not sexually like, when he's annoyed or smth doesn't go his way, he whines in this specific type of voice and does that even sometimes to himself, just to get it out.
Texas's a pouter. Most states pick up on him going to pout before he fully does it. California fully laughs out loud at it, he thinks it's one of the funniest things ever.
South Carolina is so much like Florida sometimes in the terms of fighting people with words that people tried to use it as an insult against him, thinking he'd stop. He ended up making a few of them cry.
Louisiana always starts a "what's the best ice cream flavor?" debate over and over again because his taste changes practically daily - he's never been picky with food.
Alaska doesn't hate heat, but he hates sweat, which comes with mentioned heat.
Gov absolutely loves to sometimes hide away and use his power to make sure he's unrecognizable, just to fuck off and swim in the sea, because states have that sixth sense when it comes to ending up near him on his free days.
PA talks a big game about how he hates swimming, and he can handle heat without a pool or anything alike, but the truth be told, he actually sometimes feels that the sea is just staring back at him, so any water is bad.
It's B, every time. He watches the man every time he visits California's beaches, and it's mostly because he looks so close to San Francisco that it bothers him.
San Francisco can't see it, but he thinks it's better than being called New York.

The Bahamas gained full independence within the Commonwealth of Nations on July 10, 1973.
Bahamas Independence Day
We are celebrating Bahamas Independence Day on July 10. The Bahamas is a small island nation south of Florida and north of Cuba. The island nation of the Bahamas is the ‘Commonwealth of The Bahamas.’ It is a sovereign country in the Lucayan Archipelago in the Atlantic. The country gained its independence on July 10, 1973. Prince Charles himself handed over the documentation to Prime Minister Lynden Pindling, officially making the Bahamas a fully independent nation. We celebrate the nation’s culture, traditions, and natural beauty on this day. Join us and be a part of the Bahamas Independence Day celebrations.
History of Bahamas Independence Day
The history of the Bahamas Islands starts with the Lucayans inhibiting the islands between 500 A.D. and 800 A.D. The Lucayans were a branch of the Tainos from the Caribbean islands at the time. For many centuries, they lived on their own without foreign interference until 1492. Christopher Columbus saw the islands, and Spanish ships followed him. They enslaved the native population, resulting in the island becoming deserted in 1513. English colonists started settling on the island in 1648.
The shallow water of the island made it difficult for the large ships to reach it. But it also provided easy passage to smaller ships. Pirates took advantage of this geography, and as a result, the place became a haven for pirates. Nassau on New Providence Island in the Bahamas was the stronghold of a loose confederacy of pirates between 1706 and 1718. The British took harsh measures, and the Bahamas became a colony in 1718. Further migrations happened after the American Revolutionary War. Thousands of American loyalists received land grants in the Bahamas and settled there. They also brought with them forced laborers and established plantations. Soon, the Bahamas was populated by enslaved African people. The Bahamas became a haven for the freed slaves when it abolished slavery. Today, 90% of the population are Afro-Bahamians.
The Bahamas then gained independence in 1973, led by Sir Lynden O. Pindling. Pindling’s actions earned him the name “Father of the Nation” of the Bahamas. He was pivotal in the independence of the nation. Queen Elizabeth II became the “Queen of the Nation.” Most of the country’s economy is driven by tourism and offshore finance.

Nana’s Apartment
Nana is Bandit’s Mum and one of Bluey and Bingo’s grandmothers. She lives in a very nice-looking multifamily apartment tower, kinda similar to some in Florida. It has a lovely waterfront view. She lives in Gold Coast, about 45 minutes from Brisbane.
There are very specific details re: the building she lives in.
Royal blue fascia panel
View of downtown and a beach from the balcony
Very specific architectural features on balconies and rooftops
Various amenities at ground level
Based on the look of the balcony, the curved feature on the roof and the view of the beach and towers in the distance, I think something interesting was done. I can’t confirm this but I think they may have combined two buildings.
The ground-level part looks like a building I found in Gold Coast, the street level features and view of Brisbane’s downtown match, but the architecture of the tower doesn’t entirely match.
But I also found a building at the south end of South Bank, (where “Ice Cream” took place) that is a better match for the tower part — other than the blue stripe, the arches and balconies look similar.
I’m thinking the artists on Bluey may have taken artistic license… (perhaps so as not to cause Bluey fans to visit a specific building?) they could have combined elements.
Hmm. A bit of a puzzle. 🤷♂️ Maybe I’m way off and couldn’t find the right building? Please feel free to send in corrections on this (or anything else on this Tumblr!)

Random 2010s memory: I graduated high school in 2014 and I remember, during my junior and senior years of high school, a bunch of my classmates randomly started getting into country music. Upper middle class teenagers were getting into hunting, mudding, talking about who had tickets for a Luke Bryan concert, and even talking in fake southern accents they had developed overnight. Now for context, I am from the suburbs of a major city in the north (defined here as a state in the northeastern US that was a free state that fought for the Union during the Civil War)- a place I have lived my whole life- and most of these kids I had known since kindergarten or earlier and they never went south of the Mason-Dixon Line outside of family vacations to Myrtle Beach or the Outer Banks or Hilton Head and few of them had been into country music outside of early Taylor Swift for some of the girls before this. I used to repeatedly go back to this memory and try and figure out if this was a weird isolated trend or if it happened other places, and about a year ago I cracked the code- they had all gotten into Duck Dynasty around that time because it was popular.
You know what yeah, that'll do it unfortunately. I'd say Duck Dynasty and Florida Georgia Line probably did it cause that band was crazy popular around 2013/2014; the amount of times I heard Cruise sung at school is a number I don't care to know.
I'm actually from the deep south (for instance my grandmother made Luke Bryan's niece or sister a burp cloth a few months back) so having grown up in that environment I can't imagine what it'd be like to have met people my age from up north pretending to have my accent. Sounds awesome and kinda sad
#asks#like I've seen upper middle class wannabe southern people in florida before but never from anywhere else#musta been crazy XD#random 2010s memory
