Ruby Gill shares new song 'you should do this for a living'
Ruby Gill shares a compelling new single ‘you should do this for a living’ - a song about what it takes to navigate male power, pressure and coercion in the music industry. The song was written, recorded and produced in Melbourne/Naarm and features a choir of prominent female-identifying voices, Angie McMahon, Maple Glider, Mimi Gilbert, Hannah Cameron and Hannah Blackburn.
Ruby explains that ‘you should do this for a living’ is about “balancing the freedom of song with the reality of your gender speaking louder than your voice. It’s about learning to take up space in music, and on the strength and grit expected of women and non-binary musicians, while they’re quietly taken advantage of.”
“This song is for anyone who’s had a man change their guitar tone without their permission, had their worries ignored because worries aren’t sexy, or had their body convinced to do things that hurt, all in the name of getting ahead,” says Ruby. “It is a singular story based solely on my own perspective, as all art is. But in it are some bigger things that I hope other people will feel seen by. We write the songs we wish we had heard when we were little."
No men were involved in the making of the song - from photos to engineering, mastering and production to music and management. “That might sound glib, but for many of us, this was the first and only time we’ve been in a studio session without any men. That’s astounding to me. The energy and peace in the room and now in the song was even more astounding. I hear it in the song.”
Making this song with a community of such strong, ridiculous sisters, Angie McMahon, Maple Glider, Mimi Gilbert, Hannah Cameron and Hannah Blackburn, was incredibly moving. "I’m so grateful for their friendship, insight and warmth. Each is my hero in their own small way and I doubt I’ll ever get to work so closely with so many of my favourite voices in one room again. So it’s all downhill from here really.”
The studio time was funded by The Victorian Music Industry Recovery Grant. Laura Hancock established the grant program at Soundpark to help rectify gender imbalances in Australia’s engineering and production industries, with studio time and training for female and nb-identifying musicians and recording professionals to learn and create. The song was produced by Laura Hancock, mastered by Becki Whitton and released with support from management Alyse Newman.

This microphone is a pain in the ass. It's a Rode Tube Classic and when it's working, it sounds really nice. The problem is, it's rarely working. It's from the mic collection at Soundpark Studios and it had been on the cut list for while now. I had sent it away a few years ago when it was exhibiting a whooshing - sea like noise rather regularly. It came back with a NOS GE 6072A which cost more money that I would like to pay for a tube. I get the whole NOS tube thing, but I find it hard to believe that none of the current production companies are not making tubes as good as these NOS jobs. Scoff a little, it's okay. I guess you folks that can afford to pay $100 or $1,000 per NOS item can be the ones to tell us that they sound better. Sure.
Anyway, the thing worked for a a brief period with no audible noise and then before too long back came the whooshing ocean. I ordered a JJ 12AY7 and replace the tube, which wasn't the most intuitive operation. Anyway, worked for a while and the same thing. Bummer.
I have been reading a fair bit about these mics but there doesn't seem to be a definitive solution. I read recently on the Electrical Audio tech journal that sometimes that sound can be caused by a variation or issue with the filament supply. I will check that. A few years ago I made up a BOM for a recap for the power supply. I think if I remember correctly that the PSU was built in 1995 or 1997. Don't quote me on that one. However it could probably benefit from having it recapped and bench tested. I haven't made this one a priority yet but soon enough.
I'll let you know how that turns out. Yes, I am talking to myself. No I won't hang up first. No, You hang up first. No, I love you more.

BEC SANDRIDGE SHARES NEW SINGLE 'I'LL NEVER WANT A BF' RELEASES VIDEO CLIP AND TOUR DATES
‘I’ll Never Want A BF’ is Sandridge’s most unapologetic and meatiest work to date. Nodding somewhat to the eighties, Sandridge’s theatrical vocals spill over the top of fuzzed out guitars, a gritty synth bass and hard hitting disco hi-hats. Produced by Burke Reid (Courtney Barnett, The Drones) at Melbourne’s Soundpark studios and mixed by Sandridge’s previous collaborator Tony Buchen (The…

Scraping out of the grit of Brunswick (Melbourne, Australia), The Ivory Elephant are a 3-piece playing Heavy Blues. Joining the Blues/Rock renaissance of bands such as The Black Keys and The White Stripes, and with a sound often likened to Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin, The Ivory Elephant bring their own thing to the style.
From the depths of Melbourne’s underground, The Ivory Elephant exist in a space of late nights and loud sounds. Music that harks back to the greats of 70s rock n’roll, saturated with heavy psych and down-home delta blues.
Melbourne trio, The Ivory Elephant are releasing their first full-length LP Number 1 Pop Hit on Kozmik Artifactz (Child, Buried Feather, The Heavy Eyes, Ruby the Hatchet). Despite the name, the new album explores the darker side of blues-rock, and delves deep into three-piece psychedelia.
Recorded at Melbourne’s iconic Soundpark Studios (Paul Kelly, Clairy Browne, Dave Graney) Number 1 Pop Hit was tracked over three days on the bands usual shoe-string budget.
Opening with the title track, Number One Pop Hit, is what could best be described as “slackerpsych”, the album then shifts to a rootsy gear for “Ballad of Wild Bill” and “In My Pocket”, whilst experimenting with heavy hypnotic blues in “We’re Gonna Find You” and “Torn Up Chewed Out”, along with the all out psychedelic guitar onslaught of “Psych Jam” and “Let’s Do This Again”.
Having emerged from the depths of Melbourne's underground, The Ivory Elephant revels in late nights and loud sounds. The band's music harks back to the greats of '70s rock'n'roll, saturated with heavy psych and down-home delta blues vibes. Despite the title, this album explores the darker side of blues-rock and delves deep into three-piece psychedelia.

Boxin’ Tape
During this trimester my class was able to go to Soundpark Studios in Melbourne, where we were able to record some stuff using a tape machine. This tape machine was massive and very intimidating when we first walked in but it didn’t matter too much because I was so excited to jump in. The band we were recording was a Jazz band called Boxin’ and they were awesome. I actually found it a little difficult to remain professional in the beginning. We were in a studio that none of us had been to before, the band was running late, and the plans the group came up with the day before seemed to fall through so we were all stressing out and arguing from the start. People were doing things and not communicating to the rest of the group and that was screwing around other people in the group and it turned into that sort of cycle all the way through the set up. It wasn’t until the band arrived that we actually pulled it together and started acting like professionals. I think the key to remaining professional in an unfamiliar environment is to stick to the original plan as best you can, adapt quickly if things go wrong, communicate with your team even if it seems like something small, and (try to) remain calm.
Although we had the studio for the entire day (10-5) we still had to work to time constraints. The band began arriving at 12 and continued to arrive until about 1pm. By the time they set up it was about 1:30 - 2pm so we only had 3 hours left to record 3 songs to tape. It doesn’t seem too bad when you look at it that way, an hour per song should be fine, but these were jazz songs which went for about 7-10 minutes each and because of the tape we had to process into Protools in real time. So we’d do a take, then have to rewind the tape, and re record it onto the computer in real time, so realistically we only got to do 3 takes of each song and they had to make it all the way through the song with only very minor mistakes each time. Luckily the musicians were really good at what they were doing and completely understood that we were under a bit of pressure to get the tracks down and nailed it in only a couple of takes.
Recording to tape was an interesting experience. Finding out how tape works, the characteristics of recording to tape, and even how much data you can fit on a single reel all came into how we went about the process. The tape recorder we used had 2 speed settings. Basically the slower you run tape, the more audio you can put onto it, but there is more hiss to deal with later. My group decided to go for the faster speed so we could reduce the natural tape hiss but we compromised on how much audio we could fit onto a reel. I think we could fit about 20 minutes of audio running at the faster speed which meant we had enough tape for 2 takes before we had to tape over it. I actually forgot that taping over a previous take was an option, but considering how expensive a single reel of tape is ($200-$300) I’m glad it was an option. I’m glad we didn’t have to physically edit the tape in any way. Having to be so precise and then physically cut the tape using a razor blade probably would have given me a heart attack. Luckily that wasn’t the case, and the band didn’t actually have to pay for the reel of tape which was a massive bonus.
Mixing the session was again interesting in itself. I mentioned in a previous blog about the mastering process of this session and just Jazz in general, but I found the mixing a lot more interesting than the mastering in this case. Firstly, the piano was recorded beautifully. I’m so glad that my group was able to come together after arguing about the setup because I literally didn’t touch the piano while I was mixing. I put an EQ on in the session but never even turned it on. The double bass was a different story. Unfortunately the bass player made a few noticeable errors here and there which I was not really able to correct by mixing on my laptop at home. Although I have Protools and a few decent plugins, It was nowhere near the quality that I could have achieved by mixing the bass at SAE. I particularly regret not getting the chance to use the Melodyne plugin as that would have fixed some of the pitching issues when it came to the double bass. Mixing Jazz isn’t really my forte. I’ve had so much experience mixing Indie, Rock, and Pop, but I have only ever done Jazz a few times. In the end I decided to keep things very simple and try not to go too far from what the original performance was. I used light EQ and Compression on the drums, and used the snare to experiment with a plugin that I had never used before, The Flux BitterSweet. I used EQ and compression on the double bass, and mixed the levels from there. In the end I wasn’t 100% happy with the result but I think I’ve progressed much further than the last time I tried to mix Jazz. I’m not sure if I’ll get the chance to record with tape again any time soon but I’d like to again at some point. It was a fantastic experience and I hope Boxin’ are pleased with the results my group put forward.
Till next time

Recording to Tape Project
Introduction
During week 5 of this Trimester in AUS230, we had a chance to get together in groups and spend an entire day at Soundpark Studios in Northcote. The goal was to finish recording a track with a band called Palmerslum on tape within 7 hours on the day.
Palmerslum
The band consisted of a guitarist/vocalist, another guitarist, a bassist along with a drummer. They’ve sent over a demo with a song called, Grey Street for us to listen to and analyze the sound they were going for.
The track can be found by clicking here.
Difference between Soundpark & SAE Recordings
Before I continue this blog, I would say the signal flow did throw me off a little bit compared to the usual signal flow at the studios in SAE. There was a huge amount of outboard gear which is candy land for any gear head out there, along with that we also didn’t use the console as we normally do at SAE. Instead we only used the console’s preamps, along with some Neve preamps and the API preamps. The workflow was definitely a change of scenery, as not all of the microphones were connected to the desk allowing gain/pad/phase changes in one place. The Neve and API preamps were located underneath the desk, so at least we didn’t have to run across the room whenever the gain needed to be lowered. Along with that, the patchbay also went full on spaghetti town since signal was going everywhere.
Although the work flow was different, after a little bit of guidance and understanding, things did work the same as any other studio sessions I’ve had. There definitely were a bunch of changes compared to the studio at SAE, but the signal flow did make sense after understanding how things were done there. As someone that mixes primarily in the box, it was a little difficult to follow with signal outputting everywhere on the patchbay, and it did take me a while to get used to it.
Adding on to that, Soundpark Studios also had multiple acoustically treated recording rooms built into one studio, while the studios at SAE had one recording space for one console/studio. It allows flexibility and recording different sources of instruments at once without bleeding. The different recording rooms also provided different sounds, so instead of completely switching studio rooms, the studio room remained the same while different recording rooms could be used simultaneously.
It was definitely a good change of scenery, I feel that having the chance to record at Soundpark Studios definitely did teach us that not all studios are the same and as straight forward.
The Tape Machine
The tape machine was the main part of this recording (as seen on the title of this blog), it was definitely bigger than I expected it to be. It also looked rather old, even though it was in pristine condition, it didn’t look like something you’ll see lying around in a music store these days, there were also lots of moving parts on the machine which I’d say given time they’d slowly wear themselves out.
To my knowledge, no big manufacturer has built new machines for years, which is fair considering most studio setups consist of audio interfaces which allows you to record straight to Pro Tools. Along with that, there are also multiple tape machine emulator plug-ins out there for that analogue warm tape sound.
It had big bulky fast forward, rewind, play, stop and record buttons on the top of the machine. Along with around 15 VU metres (if I remember correctly), to show signal coming into the tape machine for recording. The tape itself was also rather heavy weighing around 2.5~5kg at least, which loads onto the machine.
Surprisingly it didn’t look out of place at all at the studio, but it did look like something you’ll find as an easter egg onboard the millennium falcon in the Star Wars franchise.
During the session, we routed signal from our preamps to the tape machine and then send it back to Pro Tools for digital recording.
The Session
To begin with, the band arrived an entire hour early to setup which threw us off schedule for a bit. Considering it was our first time at Soundpark Studios, we didn’t exactly have much time to go over signal flow and outboard gear so it was a bit hectic at the beginning.
That being said, we were all quite professional about it and stuck to our roles, setting up anything that we knew how to setup. The teamwork that day was amazing, even though we were all under time pressure and didn’t want the band to dawdle around waiting for too long. We did what we could and made sure the band was comfortable and getting ready to record as soon as possible. Surprisingly, the breaks taken were very minimal as well to ensure the session ran as smoothly as possible.
Keeping a calm and cool head also did help with the session, asking for assistance when needed instead of guessing and slowing everything down.
As said earlier, there were very minimal breaks taken. Everyone in the group contributed on the day, taking turns on setting up microphones, working the patchbay, and taking turns at the desk operating Pro Tools.
Needless to say, the session went quite smoothly aside from a few bumps in the first hour.
Conclusion
It was a rather fun experience being able to work with tape, although it was only our first time and I’m not completely masterful at it, it’s nice to say at least I know the basics of it and how it works. It was also great being able to record at a different studio, learning how the signal flow works there, and recording at the massive recording space that Soundpark Studios have.
It also gave a bit of a real life feel to it, challenging us to work under time pressure, making sure the band feels welcome and being professional in a studio environment.
