Thank you and happy holidays to @agirlandherquill again for Writemas! I've been enjoying this tag game/writing prompt/writing challenge👩‍💻❤️🤍💚If you would like to join, the rules are in this invitation list.

For the Day 17 writing prompt, I chose the narration prompt: "She quivered before her greatest foe, let her fear consume her, let terror ravage her body and ice the blood in her veins."

I envisioned that this would go perfectly with a scene in Voice of Shadows, my epic fantasy where a young woman discovers she can use a magic system based on talking to shadows. I wanted to create a story that ended with a duel between two different magic systems. Throughout the story, her nemesis is the Soundmaker, who uses a magic system based on sound. Here is the start of their showdown.

She quivered before her greatest foe. She let her fear consume her, let terror ravage her body and ice the blood in her veins. Myralyna saw the Soundmaker before her. The Soundmaker was a woman of red hair like hers, but she had to be at least ten years older. Sixteen-year-old Myralyna felt small. The Soundmaker held a branch covered in bells in one hand. She held a horn in another hand. She wore a strap attached to a drum around one shoulder. She wore a strap attached to a lyre around the other shoulder. Her arms and ankles wore stacks of bangles. Bells embroidered the hems of her dress. This sorceress was prepared to use sound. Myralyna was afraid that her army of shadows wouldn’t be enough for whatever army Soundmaker summoned with her music.  

Myralyna’s shadow danced on the trees. The shadow leapt to her. She whispered in her ear. “It’s fine to be afraid, Mistress. It means you are human. Let the Soundmaker hear your heartbeat. She’s bound to underestimate you.”

Myralyna gleamed a little triumph. There she stood not with any weapon in hand, not a wand or staff, but her own voice. She was the Shadow-Tongue.

Soundmaker gleamed in mockery. “Shadow-Tongue. You might as well surrender. You’re not going to like this fight. The Emperor is forgiving. He’ll let your people live if you bow down now.”

Myralyna curved her eyebrows. “My people? Aren’t they your people too? You’re an Erewon, a traitor and a pawn.”

Soundmaker scowled. The wind blew into the bells, producing the sound of chimes. “You know  nothing. We’ll see just what the Voice of Shadows can do. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

“No!” Myralyna called with her hand raised. “I’m not asking for so much! I’m only asking that you free my sister and my friends and leave our people alone! Do this and you live.”

Soundmaker shook her head. “You have no leverage here, Shadow-Tongue.” She smirked. “Where’s your boyfriend?”

Myralyna’s cheeks turned red. Her shadow whispered in her ear. “Don’t let her get to you!”

“He’ll come!” she exclaimed. “He hasn’t left me.”

Soundmaker laughed. “We shall see.” 

She raised her arms. The bells rang sweetly. Her voice sang a high soprano note, enchanting enough that Myralyna was almost entranced. She put the horn to her mouth and blew hard. Myralyna covered her ears. She sensed that Soundmaker was summoning her forces similar to how Myralyna summoned her forces. Myralyna moved her lips, chanting her summons. She called the shadows of the birds, snakes, spiders, hares, deer, wolves, bears, squirrels, and mice. The shadows of the forest creatures gathered around her, forming a shadow that darkened the meadow. 

Shadowmaker’s minions appeared to be little clouds of energy. Each little bundle of energy emitted a single note. Swarms of the little clouds gathered around the meadow. Myralyna was terrified and in awe. She realized that each army unit was created by a single note. Soundmaker reached for her lyre. She used one finger to strike the strings in a glissando. There was a light sound of thunder roaring as her army grew.

Myralyna looked up to the sky where the silver moon hung with the morning rise. She hoped that before the fight fell out of her favor, she would finally figure out how to wield her greatest weapon. Now, the army of the Shadow-Tongue and the army of the Soundmaker faced each other off, ready to see who would be the victor.
