I love Rayni because of her loyalty, but also because like she was so friendly to Tam when they first met. She seems like she's actually a really personable and social girl when she's not basically being imprisoned and betrayed by the woman she gave her service to for years. I love books with multiple main characters and here are the four I would so love to be main characters:

Sophie, of course. Primary main character because hse is awesome and a queen and objectively central to the plot.

Rayni because she has such a unique perspective and also because I already gave her an OC love interest, friend group trio, and because she is so important to Sophie deciding to actually commit arson (as she should), I think her being a main character in an alternative plot of the book could be super fun and action packed.

Keefe probably should have been my second listing. Truth be told, I find the way Shannon writes him mildly annoying. But as a concept, he could have been a rival to Sophie. Considering they're actually closer in age than once thought it actually would have been fun if their genetic projects were both connected to each other. Sophie was created through intense and careful science and procedures, meant for good and to better the world, and Keefe was made in the most disgusting fashion of literally consuming celestial elements and hoping for the best, and he was meant to help the villains but he obviously never would. And I think this all could have been doubly interesting if set up in a slightly different way, so that his conflicts are directly related to Sophie's, and he actually had some form of mature thought going on up there. (I know it's middle grade, but some of the jokes Shannon makes through him are even too immature for them I think. I hate to say it.)

STINA. Omg, Stina should be a main character (in my fantasies she is and she is the main main character. And I care more about her canon and OC friend group than I do Sophie's ngl. Just imagine her opening scene, cause she isn't a main character at first, and its the sound of thumping hooves on the rocky grounds of the Norwegian landscape. We sweep past a running creature. A few running equines, we feel the biting cold and the dizzying speed. Stina is in the lead, racing her friends back home after taking the unicorns for a run. She looks back to see her oldest friend, a pegasus rehabilitator, Sirri Fraser, coming up behind her. The only reason she hasn't passed her yet is because she's used to the skies, but it won't take long for her competitive friend to gain on her if she doesn't take the race more seriously. Her other friend, the golden blonde Clayton Forst, lags behind, galloping as fast as she dares. She got a headstart, but she wasn't raised on riding and would prefer to keep her head. Stina turns to see Sterling Gables coming into view, miles away. So close. She was so close....if she won Sirri owed her Prattles Pins for a week. Anyways, I find I want some cool intro like that. And of course Fitz would become more relevant again as her primary love interest. And it would be amazing because I already have an idea how they could produce more alicorns and it would be directly related to Stina Heks and Sirri Fraser. And maybe Fitz Vacker proves himself trustworthy enough to join the project, though this sort of action without the council's permission might prevent him from ever being on Team Valiant or any government position if it goes wrong. So Stina doesn't trust him at first.

And with Stina's help researching and planning, and knowing the animals so well, Rayni's help with moral support, fighting force, and strategy, Sophie, a bridge between humans and elves, and the upper and lower classes and Keefe, the bridge between all the faces of the rebellion, as well as a potential bridge between the other intelligent species, both using their immense power and moral guidance to be the face of the movement. The four of them could come together to create a force even greater than the Black Swan or the Neverseen combined! Enough to being about the quickest societal changes the elven world, and the Lost Cities as a whole, has ever seen.

⟡ Mhin is not from Lovent, but they DID contract their curse there. "Anything for the pursuit of knowledge..." Perhaps Mhin had only intended to go there for study and they unwittingly brought Something Else back...

Title tag is #lost expeditions... Mhin went to Lovent with loved ones and is the lone survivor of the expedition?? No one has ever made it back except for Mhin?

Mhin fought to escape and that is when Kuras finds and help them?
