Jackie Moggridge

Jackie Moggridge, born Dolores Theresa Sorour in Pretoria, South Africa in 1922 received her pilots license at fifteen and moved to the United Kingdom in 1938 where she joined the Women's Auxiliary Air Force until she was old enough to join the Air Transport Auxiliary. Moggridge was the youngest of the female pilots at the time. She flew more than 1,500 aircraft of 83 different types and in 1953 became one of only five women to receive full RAF Wings. Moggridge went on to gain her commercial pilot's license in the 1950s becoming the first British female airline captain to fly passengers on scheduled flights. Jackie flew her last Spitfire at age 74. She passed away in 2004 at age 81.

Oriental Therapy - Alternative Therapy for Depression Oriental Therapy - Alternative Treatment for Depression The basic principles of depression treatments are important, but the real significance is in showing how these techniques specifically help with depression and why that takes place (Dale, Sorour, & Milner, 2008). This could aid in long-term therapy for depression patients. The majority of the treatments that are used in depression are either Western or Eastern in nature, depending on the country in which the patient lives and/or seeks help. However, not everyone response to depression the same way, and the same is true with the treatments for the condition. When techniques are used that match the needs of the patient, long-term therapy and help is provided (Nolen-Hoeksema, 2001). This could mean some trial and error, of course, because there are many options for those who are battling depression. The goal of nearly all treatment options, however, is a less depressed state. A calmness and a lack of stress can help provide this, as can the opportunity to discuss the problem with someone trained to talk to patients who are depressed (Dale, Sorour, & Milner, 2008). Determining the cause of depression, and treating both the cause and the symptoms, is the best way to help patients (Dale, Sorour, & Milner, 2008). The heart meridian and the balance of yin and yang are both very important to handling depression. Japanese culture believes in these kinds of healing treatments and issues much more than the majority of Western society. Yin and yang are two sides to a coin, so to speak. When they are out of balance, a person will also be "out of balance" emotionally and perhaps physically (Dale, Sorour, & Milner, 2008). Determining in which direction the balance has skewed can allow for a person to adjust his or her life in order to bring back the correct yin and yang balance. The heart meridian also deals with emotional issues that can manifest themselves physically. Examining the heart meridian in order to determine what the patient may be doing wrong can help that patient make appropriate changes. These changes will make the patient happier, and will also focus on helping the patient to remain in a healthier state of being. There is much irony to be found in the opinion that all illness begins in the mind, because many doctors and alternative healers make this claim but yet are unwilling to admit that psychic illnesses are real. The Japanese people struggle with an honest discussion of psychiatric illnesses, as they often come to their doctors with somatic complaints. Yes, they may have headaches, stomachaches, or other issues, but it is the goal of the doctor to determine what is causing these problems. Internal medicine doctors should look for physical reasons for these issues, but should also be open to the idea that no physical cause may be found (Nolen-Hoeksema, 2001). If that is the case, it is possible that the person is depressed, and that mental health counseling can be beneficial (Nolen-Hoeksema, 2001). Until the stigma of mental health and depression can be removed, however, Japanese people who need treatment for depression are not likely to receive it in the same way an American would receive treatment for that illness. There is no need to change Japanese culture entirely where depression is concerned, but tying Western and Eastern techniques together could benefit both Japanese and American sufferers of depression. Both East and West must be fused from the standpoint of medicine and treatment in order to have a successful plan to alleviate depression. In order to combine these beliefs, one must fuse shiatsu, acupuncture, bathing, herbs, diet, exercise, social support, spiritual or religious support, Western diagnostic tools, prescription drugs, and cognitive therapy into something that will have the highest likelihood of being successful. There is no reason for the Japanese to give up their Eastern ways. These ways are culturally influenced and in many cases they are effective ways of handling depression. However, Western options can also be beneficial and these options can and should be incorporated as part of a treatment plan for patients dealing with depression. Cristine Brache and Sigrid Lauren: Goodnight Sweet Thing

Two parts of the same mind in literal and psychic conflict

Premiering in Berlin at this year’s 3hd, Cristine Brache and Sigrid Lauren’s Goodnight Sweet Thing reflects on the complexities of masking and societal performance in three distinct yet interconnected tableaus that overlap historical time periods, customs, and traditions. Centered around a deconstructed Jello wrestling match, opponents Mary Magdalene and Nothing Girl—played by Betsey Brown and Emily Allan—are two parts of the same mind in literal and psychic conflict, while Joshua Weidenmiller’s role as both master and subject transforms with them. The performance art piece is adapted from Brache’s poetry collection of the same name, and intertwines poetry, movement, and a score by Ryan Woodhall to explore the internal battle for authenticity, and examines its complex relationship with societal pressures and authority.

President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday floated a legally dubious proposal to let corporations and individuals who invest $1 billion or more in the U.S. bypass regulations, a scheme that environmental groups and government watchdogs said underscores the corrupt intentions of the incoming administration.

"Corporate polluters cannot bribe their way to endangering our communities and our clean air and water," Mahyar Sorour of Sierra Club said in a statement. "Donald Trump's plan to sell out to the highest bidder confirms what we've long known about him: He's happy to sacrifice the wellbeing of American communities for the benefit of his Big Oil campaign donors."

"We will keep fighting to defend our bedrock environmental protections and ensure they apply to everyone, not just those who can't afford Trump's bribe," Sorour added.

In a Truth Social post on Tuesday, Trump wrote that "any person or company investing ONE BILLION DOLLARS, OR MORE, in the United States of America, will receive fully expedited approvals and permits, including, but in no way limited to, all Environmental approvals."

"GET READY TO ROCK!!!" said Trump, who pledged on the campaign trail to accelerate oil drilling and asked the fossil fuel industry to bankroll his bid for a second White House term in exchange for large-scale deregulation.

As early as May of this year, fossil fuel industry lobbyists and lawyers had already begun crafting executive orders for Trump to sign upon retaking the White House. After winning last month's election, Trump moved quickly to stack his Cabinet with billionaires and other rich individuals with close corporate ties, including those in the fossil fuel industry.

The Associated Pressnoted Tuesday that Trump's push to let large investors evade regulations would itself likely run up against regulatory hurdles, "including a landmark law that requires federal agencies to consider the environmental impact before deciding on major projects."

"While Trump did not specify who would be eligible for accelerated approvals, dozens of energy projects proposed nationwide, from natural gas pipelines and export terminals to solar farms and offshore wind turbines, meet the billion-dollar criteria," AP noted. "Environmental groups slammed the proposal, calling it illegal on its face and a clear violation of the National Environmental Policy Act, a 54-year-old law that requires federal agencies to study the potential environmental impact of proposed actions and consider alternatives."

"Presidents have no authority whatsoever to waive statutory public health and safety protections based upon a dollar value of capital investment."

Lena Moffitt, executive director of Evergreen Action, said Tuesday that "Trump is treating America's energy policy like a cheap knickknack at an estate sale: brazenly offering to auction off our public lands and waters to the highest bidder."

"Trump's promise to fast-track environmental approvals for billion-dollar kickbacks is nothing but an illegal giveaway to fossil fuel special interests," said Moffitt, pointing to federal law requiring "rigorous review processes to protect the public interest, not rubber stamps for corporate polluters."

"Trump's plan would turn a system already rigged in favor of fossil fuel interests into one openly driven by corruption, where special interests dictate policy and everyday Americans pay the price," Moffitt added. "Now he's making it official: If you write a big enough check, his administration will let you break the rules and drive up costs for working families."

Axiosreported that Trump's specific focus on environmental regulations "will put the spotlight on Lee Zeldin," the president-elect's pick to lead the Environmental Protection Agency.

"Zeldin is considered to have little environmental policymaking experience—but is a strong supporter of Trump's broad deregulatory push," the outlet noted.

Tyson Slocum, director of the Energy Program at Public Citizen, expressed confidence that Trump's plan "will not come to pass," given that "presidents have no authority whatsoever to waive statutory public health and safety protections based upon a dollar value of capital investment."

"Trump's claim deserves ridicule for being so outlandishly illegal and wrong," said Slocum. "However, the statement does highlight Trump's utter disregard for protecting the environment or human health and the imminent peril that he and his cronies will push policies that jeopardize health, safety, and planetary well-being."

Slocum said there are other "more realistic and insidious" Trump schemes worth guarding against, including his "efforts to use national security designations to force bailouts of coal power plants during his firm term."
