December Book Reviews: The Wrong Lady Meets Lord Right by Suzanne Allain
I picked this book up because I was charmed by the illustrated cover. In The Wrong Lady Meets Lord Right, two cousins, impoverished relation Arabella and wealthy heiress Isabelle, switch places due to Isabelle's social anxiety. Unfortunately, under this charade, neither girl can tell the truth to the respective men courting them...
This book is firmly in the closed-door Regency genre, in the style of Georgette Heyer. Unfortunately, it neither manages to step into a different social milieu, like the works of Mimi Matthews, nor manage some of the wit and charm of Heyer, like Sophie Irwin. The Wrong Lady Meets Lord Right trots out the usual Regency chestnuts—balls, rides in Hyde Park, curtseys to the queen—but not with any particular flair. Both romances, Bella's with a titled lord and Issie's with a gentleman doctor, tend more towards surface-level instalove rather than any more complex relationship. The resolution of the plot, which inevitably sorts out the girls' imposture and reveals Bella to have been eligible all along, is unconvincing to the extreme, even for typical level of implausibility in the genre.
However! I say this as someone who's read a lot of Regencies, and I'm fairly burned out on the genre unless they're particularly good. Yes, this book is solidly middling in the genre and doesn't do anything original. But if you're just dipping your toes into the genre, somewhere around the hey! these Julia Quinn Bridgerton books are pretty good! you'll probably have a fun time with this book.

If He Was Your Fan (A Henry Cavill Fanfic), Chapter 71, Version 2: Found Wanting, Part 2
Shopping becomes a blur, now. Even though you are all shopping for dresses and such, your friends are giving you special attention. You know you didn’t commit a fashion faux pas; you just did what you wanted and said to hell with the fads and did your own thing. There is no law against it, but your heart winced at some of the reactions. Henry is a millionaire actor, but he is also descendant of nobility, therefore is seen as needing to hold a standard. Between his looks and status that was tough. You knew that, but you didn’t know that till now.
But you made it. And not a moment too soon. Sophia made arrangements for tea at Hyde Park’s , her treat, which is nice.
You are all sitting and enjoying yourselves.
“Do you think I did okay on the dresses this time?” you ask.
“You did fine on the dress you picked for the premiere!” Stella said, and rolls her eyes. “Don’t worry about the public. You’ll never please them all, anyway.”
“I know that’s right,” Chiru chimes in. “Fuck ‘em, they just want to be in your place, anyway.”
Suddenly, you hear a chuckle…a familiar one. You frown. That can’t be…you turn around and rise from your seat to confirm your suspicions. You go into the bigger room and find Henry and some woman at a table for two talking. He does a double take and notices you.
“Henry!” you say brightly. You bend down to kiss him and laugh softly, “I didn’t know you’d be here today!”
“Hello, darling,” he says quickly. “I thought you were at Trent today.”
I’ll bet you did. “We started at Trent,” you say sweetly. “but we decided to go shopping for that Christmas party we got invited to. Sophia surprised us with reservations here for tea.” You look at the woman, who seems familiar and raise your eyebrows at him.
“Oh, this is Lara, Lara Winters—”
“Lara Winters?” you extend your hand, giving a slight frown. She looks familiar to you.
“Ah, yes,” She smiles up at you as she takes your hand and shakes it. Your glance drops to her beautifully manicured hand and you also take in her extremely groomed appearance, her makeup and nails impeccable, her clothes giving her the impression of one who modeled. You were in a long sleeved tee and suede sports jacket with riding pants and boots from that morning.
“I knew I’d seen you before. You were at the London Grand Dame function not long ago.”
“Yes, yes I was,” she says slowly, and glances at Henry, then back at you.
“I remember you because you volunteer at the children’s hospital and library in the city,” you say with a smile. “I volunteer in Brixton.”
“And you ride at Trent,” she went on. “Oh, my, you’re the one who rides Lucifer—”
“Luc,” you correct. You look over your shoulder and see your friends looking at this situation. Stella looks upset, Chiru is giving a side eye and Sophie is trying to smile but her eyes look more anxious. “Well, I’d better get back. Nice meeting you, guess I’ll see you at the Grand Dame Christmas party.” You bend again and kiss Henry’s forehead. “See you later.”
“Cheers, darling.”
You give him a quick smile and walk back to your table.
“Well, what a surprise,” Sophie says with obviously feigned optimism. “Did you have a nice visit?”
“Sophie,” Churi rolls her eyes.
“Ladies, I need to get through this tea,” you tell them. “So if we can go on with the conversation we were having about our arrangements for the party?” They all look uncertain. They all don’t like what happened any more than you do, but you are trying to keep your composure, and if the lump in your throat gets too big you won’t be able to breathe and your eyes will water. “Please.”
They all comply, but you don’t like this, and inside you feel you are dying. First he doesn’t seem excited about you accompanying him on the press junket, and now this. And the ways he broke it off with women in the past? Are you a flavor of the month-no, wait-year?
As you continue the conversation with the others you Google Ms. Lara Winters. She is upper class like Henry, looks like his mother, is slender and taller than you...does volunteer work...has a cute dog named Buttons, and is marketing executive and project manager for a video game company?
Shit.

It was Sophie who did the UTLY visuals so I'd be reallly surprised if she was anything but supportive during that time
On top of that the rings they got each other
G also mentioned Sophie regularly in interviews, sometimes by name, sometimes as for example 'my girlfriend from London'
Sophie was also with Gwen at hyde park in June, I was thinking she probably stayed at Sophie's while in London

Yes, Bridgerton often stumbles into the category of "wallpaper historical."
it is a continuing issue in Bridgerton that the missing French revolution is one of the most glaring examples of: that the regency era is used as a backdrop for the story, not as a moving piece in of itself, but as a cherry picked aesthetic. It may as well be wallpaper.
To be fair, there are benefits to this. It gives the show more room to explore themes & characters it wants to focus on without being swamped by other things and also lowers the stakes. The show isn't going for realism and that is fun! It keeps the vibes.
However, in my opinion, using the era as a backdrop without its full detail risks cheapening some parts of the story. Just a couple of examples:
Anthony in relation to his brothers & Kate
The fact Anthony was able to grow the viscounty to a point he was able to provide for all of his siblings - with Benedict able to pursue art & Colin's travels - when in many family's second & third sons would go into military or church careers, cheapens the very real effort he went too, his sense of duty, and how his family really don't understand it - he wants them to have choices when he feels he does not. They don't quite get it (Anthony also doesn't communicate this well don't worry I'm not giving him a pass) but Kate really really does get it and that's why they work so well.
Whistledown accusing Eloise of "radicalism"
In season 2, there is some commentary around class differences. But it doesn't hit hard enough due to, as OP mentions, the removal of the revolution. Radicalism can mean revolutionaries ie she's hanging around French-sympathizers who want to remove the monarchy or American-sympathizers who want to weaken the British Empire by loosening the grip on American soil. Considering Eloise's station, this accusation from Whistledown is a wild one and it's no surprise she was almost ruined from it. But the audience doesn't really get the full impact of what that all means, because the stakes have been lowered.
Promenading & location details
As a more light hearted example, promenading by walking in the park was a real thing. It's used in the show in lots of fun ways, including to move the plot forward and show how the ton is reacting. However, as mentioned, the era is used as a simple backdrop. Bridgerton often does not have a strong sense of place. Details are missing - every park they walk in is basically the same and you could replace one with another and nothing would change. A little detail adds so much more. For example, the popular promenading spot Hyde Park was also used by highway men to rob people at night (have this mentioned, thus making Colin's concern of Penelope being out at night unprotected much more real), etc.
Women's rights
Imo they need to build this out asap because otherwise Sophie/Benedict won't be as impactful & Eloise's season will fall flat on its face. Penelope keeps her Whistledown cash in her bedroom for more reasons than just hiding her identity. She can't put it in a bank. Women couldn't open their own bank accounts in their own name until 1975 - and single women still needed a signature to get a loan or credit card even if they were making big bucks. Eloise thinks marriage is a cage for a reason. Women's property automatically came under the ownership of their husbands until 1882.
I could go on but you get the idea. I like Bridgerton too for its aesthetics, the vibes, and the characters. You don't always need attention to detail, historical accuracy, or a world that is essentially its own character to have a successful episode. But, just sometimes, sprinkling these things in strategically can take a good episode to an amazing one!
I have been banned from continuing to discuss the existence of the French Revolution in the Bridgerton universe at family dinners

What types of regional and local transport(s) does Cincinnati need more in the future? Explain why.
• Streetcar / Light rail
• BRT (Bus Rapid Transit)
• Bike-share
• Subway
• Monorail (Cable car)
• High Speed Rail
Sophie Gartland: Currently Cincinnati’s transportation mainly revolves around the Cincinnati Metro Bus, the Bell Connector, uber/lyft, and some bikeshares. Ultimately, the best way to get around Cincinnati is by car and the bus would be the second best option. The image below shows how many ride the Metro, and where. There are some pedestrian friendly neighborhoods including Hyde Park, Over-The-Rhine, and the campus area. But the city in general is not walkable enough, especially when going from neighborhood to neighborhood. Our group members examined the status of the current transportation and what can be implemented in the future to improve efficient transportation around the city. We looked at ways in which subway, high speed rail, and bikeshare systems can improve transportation for both travelers and residents of Cincinnati.
Siobhan Bracken: Cincinnati and the entire state of Ohio could benefit from high-speed rail infrastructure being built. High speed rail would allow people from Cincinnati to travel long distances with low environmental impact and at a lower cost. There have been proposed plans of building high speed rail connecting the major cities in Ohio: Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati. This would benefit much of the state by making it easier to travel from south west Ohio to north east Ohio. Additionally, with the increased investment of jobs in central Ohio, a high speed rail system would encourage tourism and Cincinnati and Cleveland would also benefit from this influx of people and jobs. Cincinnati needs high speed rail to encourage environmentally friendly forms of transportation at a low cost.
Trinity Finch: Subways can significantly improve the average commute times, help people efficiently travel around the city to get where they need to be while spending much less money on commuting. There are a number of advantages to the subway would include the environmental gains, higher safety of the general traffic, and increased demand and attracting car users, which all around would increase walkability and general safety of the people not using cars or not having access to car transportation. Actually, Cincinnati is home to the largest unused subway system in the world with over two miles of empty tunnels. With that being said, we already have the layout to continue that subway system. Cincinnati would benefit from this system of underground subways because of the vast amount of hills and obstacles that the subway can avoid. The map below shows the current abandoned subway system that Cincinnati possesses, as stated before with this layout, a city budget and fund, it is possible to continue the 1927 subway system dream.
Work Cited: The Cincinnati Subway. Home - City of Cincinnati. (n.d.). Retrieved February 15, 2023, from https://www.cincinnati-oh.gov/dote/about-transportation-engineering/historical-information/the-cincinnati-subway/
Body paragraph: Kayra Biking
Most of Cincinnati is actually walkable which is the cheapest option a pedestrian could choose when going from place to place, however the safety aspect is questionable. Most areas in Cincinnati are not the safest especially when walking alone. Therefore the second cheapest option would be biking. It is a faster and safer way of getting around. Sadly, in most parts of Cincinnati I have seen, the bikers are usually on the sidewalk, not on paths on the road. There are barely designated paths for those who want to use them and even if there are, most of the paths are blocked by parked cars. The result of this is less peo0ple utilizing biking and the little people who do bike have to go on the sidewalk blocking the walkways of pedestrians. Now all of that said, obviously it is not the safest biking on a busy city road, but the less busier areas of Cincinnati can definitely invest in more on road bike ways. For example, around campus I barely see people biking when it could actually save them time and keep them safer. A great example of a place that really utilizes biking would be the Netherlands which I find intriguing. Traffic rules there are so bike-friendly that the Dutch don't even need helmets. The cycling infrastructure in the Netherlands is so well thought out that cycling accidents are surprisingly few, especially considering how many people bike.I think having more bicycle paths on the sides of the road would be very beneficial for the city of Cincinnati for efficiency.
People in the Netherlands biking on the road whereas in Cincinnati
It would be very dangerous to do so.
These are the types of off side paths Cincinnati should include more of
Especially around campus areas and lower traffic areas.
Gabe: In conclusion, Cincinnati’s current transportation options mainly consist of the Metro Bus, Bell Connector, uber/lyft, and some bikeshares. Although the city is not very walkable, there are some pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods. While driving is the most efficient way to get around Cincinnati, it is neither environmentally friendly nor cost-effective. High-speed rail infrastructure and subways are proposed solutions that could significantly improve transportation efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and increase safety. Biking is a cheaper option than driving or taking public transportation, but the lack of designated bike paths and safety concerns make it a less popular choice. Overall, it is critical for Cincinnati to invest in efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly transportation options to enhance the city's walkability and overall quality of life.

19 Most Anticipated of 2019 Part 1: 1-10
19 films directed by women that will debut in 2019. PART TWO HERE.
Always Be My Maybe dir. Nahnatchka Khan
There has been an Asian-American filmmaking wave slowly building over the years and we are finally getting into the thick of it with films like Always Be My Maybe. A Netflix original the film is a romcom starring the always stellar Randall Park and hilarious comedian Ali Wong as childhood friends who reconnect as adults and fall in love despite living very different lifestyles.
Animals dir. Sophie Hyde
I am a major sucker for a good friendship comedy and Animals certainly looks promising. Starring Alia Shawkat and Holliday Grainger the film focuses on two hard-partying friends as they hit their 30s and begin to realize that they might not be fun party girls but co-dependent alcoholics.
Dirty God dir. Sacha Polak
There was a time when Dutch director Sacha Polak was attached to the Virginia Woolf and Vita Sackville-West romance Vita & Virginia. Instead she’s made Dirty God, set in contemporary England and focused on a woman who is the victim of an acid attack (played by real life burn survivor Vicky Knight).
Go Back to China dir. Emily Ting
Another film that makes a part of the new Asian-American wave, Go Back to China follows a socialite who blows through her trust fund and then has to go to China to learn the family business of making and selling children’s toys.
Happiest Season dir. Clea DuVall
Has there ever been a mainstream lesbian romcom before? DuVall’s Happiest Season is a Christmas film about a woman planning to propose to her girlfriend over Christmas only to realize her girlfriend isn’t out to her parents yet. It stars Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis but the most surprising and shocking aspect of the film is that it’s being produced by TriStar. A wide release would be great for DuVall but it would also be huge news because of the subject matter as most films about lesbians usually get small specialty releases if they get released at all. Here’s hoping that Happiest Season breaks that unfortunate record.
Harriet dir. Kasi Lemmons
There has shamefully never been a big screen adaptation of Harriet Tubman’s life (though Viola Davis tried to make one for HBO for years). We are finally getting one from Kasi Lemmons, the pioneering director behind Eve’s Bayou. The film will star Cynthia Erivo as the legendary abolitionist. Dare I hope for Oscars?
The Last Thing He Wanted dir. Dee Rees
I’ll be honest. I don’t particularly like Joan Didion’s writing and I’m not really a fan of Anne Hathaway. But after Mudbound, my favourite film of 2017, anything Dee Rees made would automatically be on my most anticipated list. Based on Didion’s novel of the same name the Netflix original stars Hathaway as a journalist who, after her father’s death, decides to take up his work becoming an arms dealer.
Late Night dir. Nisha Ganatra
I am a huge fan of Mindy Kaling’s writing. After cutting her teeth on The Office as both a writer and a performer she’s proven herself to be one of those charming performers who can be counted on to deliver really good enjoyable light-hearted entertainment. Late Night (which she wrote, produced and starred in) will see take on the world of Late Night television where her character, an initial hasty diversity hire, bonds with the host she’s writing for played by the always hilarious Emma Thompson.
Liberté: A Call to Spy dir. Lydia Dean Pilcher
Based on the true story of Vera Atkins, a British woman who recruited spies, this movie offers an alternative look at WWII and focuses on three real life civilian women who worked as spies during the war. I was a huge fan of the alternative look at WWII provided by the surprisingly amazing Their Finest. Hopefully Liberté, despite the radically different subject matter, will prove just as good.
Little dir. Tina Gordon Chism
I wasn’t a fan of Chism’s first film, Peeples, but honestly the trailer for Little (surely a play on Penny Marshall’s body-swapping comedy Big?) completely sold me. It shows Regina Hall as a cruel and demanding boss who is magically transformed into her 12 year old self (Marsai Martin) who must learn to rely on the assistant she abused when she was an adult (Issa Rae). It just looks hilarious.

Baby Bridgerton meet cute au
Today on another episode of Bridgerton fics I really want to read. But can't write because I lack both the time and the creativity to do them justice
Baby Bridgerton meet Cute au
Saphne:
Young stuttering Eton aged Simon Basset meeting Anthony's little sister on a visit to the Bridgerton home and immediately being pulled into a game of house by Anthony's tallest little sister. Who forces him to play husband and she will be the wife and all her siblings now are their kids so they must listen to her of course. Because she's the mom. And him the dad. Simon stutters the whole time but leaves little Daphne with the most organized pretend household he can manage before running off to find Anthony to ask to come over more often
Kanthony:
Young 10 yo Anthony finding a scared toddler Kate afraid of storms, asking him to help her find her papa and pretty Miss Mary in Hyde Park. Because she can't find them and its started to rain and she's scared. And Anthony being the gallant kid he is, shelters the little girl from the rain with his coat under a tree, and returns her to her father as soon as he hears voices looking for her. The day after he meets her, he finds out that the little girl Kate, is the daughter of the man who just ran off with the season's diamond. He wonders if he'll ever see her again
Benophie:
Benedict met Sophie in the theater when Sophie was four, since her mother was an actress and Sophie would have been trained to appear on stage. Benedict saw little Sophie play a little Christmas angel in a opera and immediately asked his father if they could meet the actors, just so he could give the little angel girl a flower and tell her she was pretty. Sadly Sophie's mother died not soon after and rather than see the little girl starve, grandmother left her at the doorstep of the Earl of Gunningworth. But she never forgot the dream of the nice boy in the theater who once called her pretty
Polin
The first time Colin met newborn Penelope with her red hair and Rosy cheeks, he wanted to take her home with him and share with her his favorite cake and biscuits. Penelope would cry if Colin was too far from her cradle and Colin declared to all sundry that baby Penelope was "his Pen" for almost all the time it took Penelope to learn how to talk and say it back. Even if adults tried to convince him that Penelope wasn't "one of his" thinking he was confused about his many siblings growing in number. Colin remained insistent for most of Penelope's early years, that Penelope was 'his' Pen the way he was 'my Colin' for her. they only outgrew the habit after he left for school and made more friends his age. Still Penelope never forgot that he was 'her Colin'. Even if Colin did as they grew older. (or maybe he's always been sure she's 'his' Pen too)
Philoise
Their first time meeting was on one of young Phillip's visits to London with his father. Little Eloise had snuck out behind her parents back to a particularly busy bookshop and happened to see an older boy, buy the exact same book that little Eloise had been eying for ages. So of course like any Viscount baby sis...She threw a tantrum. Phillip was terrified of the crying girl who kept accusing him of stealing her book, but he wanted to keep the book, so he just, found something else to give her, shaved ice? did she want shaved ice? he got it for her, maybe a toy, yes, little girls liked toys, here's a toy, just don't cry, don't cry. By the time Edmund found Eloise again, she was grinning, sitting atop of veritable mountain of trinkets, eating shaved ice, with a devoted young boy profusely apologizing to her. Phillip went home with his book and every time he read it, he remembered fondly the cute little tantrum thrower who warped him around his finger that day in Mayfair. While Eloise never quite forgot that moment either.
---
guys you should write this, I want to read it!!

Okay but imagine Hyacinth dragging Sophie everywhere 🥺🥺 to the modiste, to Hyde Park and all around the House because ehe loves her
Once Sophie is free from her restrictions of her job as a Maid and has married Benedict i can totally see this happening whenever they're in London.
Hyacinth just so desperate to spend time with Sophie and wanting to be with her as much as she can. Hyacinth constantly tries to talk them into stopping at Number 5 or to her mother about her stopping at Bridgerton House...
but when Sophie is still a maid I totally see her spending so much time with Hyacinth, like whenever El and Fran are at balls or they have formal visitors so Hyacinth isn't allowed to partake, Sophie is there with Hyacinth, teaching her things, working with her and encouraging her in everything.
Sophie has been found on a couple of occasions asleep with Hyacinth in her room when everyone else was a ball. Benedict saw it once and honestly, it nearly made him cry.

“Ned….” Catelyn called his name as soon as she woke up naked under the sheets. She expected to find him beside her but he wasn’t there. She finds herself ridiculous how she still dreams of him in her sleep even when there’s no reason to miss him.
Yesterday, they spent their date biking at Hyde park. They also rode on a ferris wheel, the London Eye, to admire the view of the city. After that they ate sandwiches and drank jasmine green milk tea at this favorite milk tea shop of their grandkids.
They’ve been friends for two years but they’ve been doing what normal couples do only for the past 2 months. He even helps her bake and manage her pastry shop on a daily basis that some people from other towns who eat at her cafe had even mistaken them as a long-married couple. She would laugh at it but deep inside it somehow made her feel sad. Ned was a widower and she was a divorcee who stayed too long in a toxic marriage. Part of her wished she never married that man and met Ned sooner. But there’s a purpose for everything, whether they are good or bad events. Their losses and devastation led them to the rekindling of hope, to each other.
Her thoughts were now full of the great happenings that occurred ever since she moved into this unfamiliar town and it inspires her to get up from bed every morning.
She searched for her clothes and picked up her panties atop her pants on the floor. Her shirt was on the other side too but she walked to his cabinet to find a shirt of his. Ned loved light, pastel colors. She saw the light green color that matched his eyes. It would have been her choice had she not seen the flesh button up shirt next to it. It was the shirt he wore when he first came to her house to pick up his granddaughter Sophie, who was Maisie’s (her granddaughter) best friend. She took it out and wore it. She didn’t need her pants anymore as the bottom of it reached at her mid thigh.
She quietly walked down the stairs, smelling brewed coffee and cinnamon and hearing the vinyl record playing. Ned was the only person she knew who had a vinyl record placed in his kitchen. As she entered there, he saw Ned chopping strawberries and humming to the song at the same time, a romantic one that she wasn’t familiar with.
She went to surprise him and embrace him from behind but as soon as she touched him, he turned around and took her in his arms.
“Dance with me as I sing you this song,” he said.
“And what song is that, my love?” she smiled widely at him. He held her closer to him and began singing,
Baby, I'm yours (baby, I'm yours)
And I'll be yours (yours)
until the stars fall from the sky
Yours (yours) until the rivers all run dry
In other words, until I die
Baby, I'm yours (baby, I'm yours)
And I'll be yours (yours) until the sun no longer shines
Yours (yours) until the poets run out of rhyme
In other words, until the end of time
Ned looked into her eyes as he was swaying her to the beat, to let her know he means every word. It softened her heart because she was never loved as good as this.
I'm gonna stay right here by your side
And do my best to keep you satisfied
Nothin' in the world could drive me away
Every day, you'll hear me say
Baby, I'm yours (baby, I'm yours)
And I'll be yours (yours) until two and two is three
Yours (yours) until the mountain crumbles to the sea
In other words, until the eternity
Baby, I'm yours (ooh)
'Til the stars fall from the sky
(Baby, I'm yours)
'Til the rivers all run dry
(Baby, I'm yours)
Baby, I'm yours
‘Til the sun no longer shines
Baby, I'm yours
‘Til the poets run out of rhymes
“Baby I’m yours…” he emphasized the last line. She tiptoed so she could kiss him softly, to tell him she was all his as well.
“Good morning, Ned.” she said with her arms wrapped around him.
“Good morning to you, sunshine. You’re just in time. I would have brought your breakfast to your bed.”
“Oh, you sweet man. There’s no need to…”
“This one’s for you.” He pulled away from her embrace and placed her breakfast before her, a full plate of strawberry chocolate french toast and a cup of hot coffee with a simple latte art on it, a heart. He never had any idea about latte art until she taught him how. It deeply moved her how he’s doing it just for her.
“Wow. You never fail to make me feel special.” She sat on the chair right next to him.
“Because you always are to me.” He clasped her hand. That gesture was enough to make her believe in herself, and in the better place that she is in now.
