Someone claiming to be your father is trying to break in. Following the eponymous Sweetpea is: a mosaic faced guardian angel, something wearing her father’s guise, and the detritus of life in their gently crumbling mansion.

Sweetpea is a Twine (Harlowe) game, submitted to the 2022 Edition of the SpringThing. It is the first game of this author.

First Played: during the SpringThing 2022 Last Played: 21-May-23 Playtime: around 40min (one run) Rating: 4/5 Thoughts: A chilling and confusing snippet of life told through the eyes of a small child dealing with struggling parental figures, in a gothic style.

============= Review

The game follows Sweetpea (name unknown), a young girl home alone, as she is woken up by her father's texts asking her to let him inside the house. Which would not be an issue if she hadn't seen him in his office not long before...

Spoilers ahead. It is recommended to play the game first. The review is based on my understanding/reading of the story.

The game starts with the game's illustration of the eponymous Sweetpea, whose big eyes and scared demeanor grabs you and pulls you (into the darkness).

Pressing start will move the player to a makeshift phone, where Sweetpea exchanges messages with her supposedly father, who hounds her to let him inside the house. [I liked the timed appearance of the messages, and the slight wonky-ness of the its look added to the unsettling feeling]

Continues a series of choices where Sweetpea goes on to explore the house, recollecting past events and feelings while she examines bits of rooms or objects. Parts of the text is animated or transformed to add onto the strange and horror-y setting. There is multiple mention of a Micheal, which comes back later in the story [and whose description reminded me of the Archangel Micheal? <- not well versed in this, so could be me missing the point.] Still, you are often reminded that there is someone at the door, struggling to get inside. [The vivid description of the unusually lit rooms, the creaking sounds around, or the comforting taste of sweets or touch of a sweater, or the pain of the icy window, creates an intense imagery, enthralling any reader from looking away.]

Finally, Sweetpea decides it would be best to go take a nap instead of opening the door to some stranger who kind of looks like her dad, but also not really. She is still woken up by said father figure, a nightmarish apparition which frightens her, even if some part are strangely familiar. She is forcefully tucked in, before (or after?) witnessing blood on the floor and the not-dad-maybe-dad feeling sick in the bathroom. [I didn't catch this the first time I played the game, but it is heavily implied the father is an alcoholic following the mother's departure (death?), behaving strangely in her eyes when drunk. The horror of every day life...]

[The next part confused me quite a bit at first, not because of the change of background marking a new beginning in the story, but by the shift in the story going from a grim reality told through the eyes of a child, to being swooped by some sort of guardian angel in some imaginary place and being served breakfast. Then afterwards, the context of alcoholism with the father kind of makes it as if the dad was sobered up then, caring for his child.]

A confrontation between the Guardian Angel and the Father-Not-Father ensues, where we can read snippets from the guilt of the father over his behaviour and lack of care towards his child since the passing (death?) of the mother/focusing more/too much on his work, as well as knowing Sweepea, the child that she is, notices the changes in behaviour and the important trinkets tucked away.

Still, the game ends on a positive note [and the visual shows it, moving from dark colours to a bring pink], where things turn around for Sweetpea, announcing the turn of a new leaf for her, with brightness and happiness [following the dad's recovery/promise to do better?].

Also Micheal and dad are not the same person, apparently...

The fact that there was no set plot before the story was written strangely adds onto the uneasiness of the game, and works to better show how the mind of a child goes from one thing to another. Also, insane.

The path where Sweetpea does open the door instead of taking a nap was cut for time, and while it would have been interesting to get a more "obvious" hint at the father's strange behaviour, it does work in the game's favour of the child's portrayal (more likely to back down when scared, also it's the middle of the night).

A few random notes:

Sweetpea can/will visit the study twice; during the second visit, the game will not acknowledge the first (this is minor, and due to the construction of the game, done without variables, which is impressive in an of itself.

The choice of colors, while delightful and creepy, made it sometimes hard to read (the white on pink at the end) or to find links (the light pink being very close to the text colour), similarly with the textured words (animation/custom). But from a style/story perspective, since we are in the mind of a child (for the most part), this fits with how Sweetpea would be feeling (the uneasiness/hopelessness/happiness).

The description of the child being left alone for days on end just broke my heart...

The gothic style shines through the text, and makes the horror not just more vivid, but more visceral to feel. Chills going down the spine at every turn.

La GnoseLa Gnose du grec gnosis (connaissance), qui rassemble un grand nombre de courants de courant philosophiques et religieux, dont le but et l’acquisition d’une connaissance supérieure par une approche initiatique.Elle peut se définir par une approche philosophique et religieuse selon laquelle le salut passe par la connaissance directe des choses divines, donc avec sois même.Ensemble de méthodes et de disciplines ésotériques pour accéder à la vérité Universelle.Tout homme peut percevoir Dieu en lui-même et acquérir la vie éternelle.Elle s’apparente au mysticisme.D’après Frater Nahash, le gnostique est un fou cherchant la connaissance de la vérité, plutôt que la vérité figé en Dieu.Chambellant disait que la gnose est la connaissance, mais qu’elle connaissance ?Celle de la Tradition Universelle et primordiale, celle des, enseignements anciens, transmis par les écoles initiatiques à leur élèves.La gnose ne s’encombre pas de dogme.Si on en croît Socrate : « Connais-toi toi-même, et tu connaîtras l’Univers et les dieux ».Il faut abandonner ce que l’on croit savoir pour atteindre de nouvelles formes de conscience et de connaissance.            La Gnose a vu le jour entre le premier et le troisième  siècle ; certains l’attribut la pérennité à Simon le Magicien (un mage chrétien), fondateur de la première école gnostique, il est contemporain de Jésus.Dosithée, fut un chef religieux Samaritain, il aurait fondé une école Samaritaine (peut-être les bons Samaritains ?)Les ménandriens sont les disciples de Ménandre est aussi samaritain ; ils croient que l’intelligence supérieure (Enoïa) forme le monde intelligible et le monde sensible par voie d’émanation successives de génies (Eons) de moins en moins purs à mesures qu’ils s’éloignent de l’Etre Absolu. Là où se manifeste la chose, la « «cause » est attendue et cette cause n’est autre que la gnose.Robert Amadou dit dans « Qu’est-ce que le Martinisme ? » Car si le Christ est Dieu, le Nouvel Homme est un autre Christ.Le Martiniste n’a besoin pour revenir et contribuer au retour de tout être émané dans le principe, que de régénérer ; il doit à cette fin, posséder la Sagesse, et commencer par la chercher.Probablement, la cherchera-t-il d’abord à l’extérieur de lui, puis par un mouvement concentrique, il aboutira à une recherche intérieure, une visite en son âme qui le conduira à l’Ame de Dieu et ces deux âmes n’en feront en fait qu’une seule et même âme ».Dans la Prêtrise de l’Homme Nouveau, Saint Martin nous dit : « Le christianisme n’est composé que de la caste sainte, de la vraie caste sacerdotale. […] Le christianisme est le complément du sacerdoce Melchisédech.Les Rose-Croix du XVII éme siècle ont rangé Melchisédech Hénoch, Moïse et Elie et d’autre parmi leurs ancêtres.Le Sacerdoce de l’ancienne Loi est plus proche de celui du Christ que le Sacerdos antérieur à la Loi.Or le Sacrement signifiait d’autant plus expressément le Christ qu’ils étaient plus proche de lui.Donc le Sacerdoce de Christ doit être nommé d’après le Sacerdoce de la Loi plutôt que d’après le Sacerdoce de Melchisédech, antérieur à la Loi.Il est écrit dans le Psaume (110, 4) : « Tu es prêtre pour l’éternité selon l’Ordre de Melchisédech ».Au Moyen-Age la gnose était présente dans les cercles intérieurs de l’Ordre des Templiers.Au XVII éme siècle, elle apparait au sein du mouvement rosicrucien.Johan Valentin Andréa fut l’un ses précurseurs ; de ce groupe des dérives menèrent à la Franc-Maçonnerie.C’est grâce à la gnose que naquit la société Théosophique au XIX siècle, puis des groupes créés par Rudolph Steiner et par Max Heindel virent le jour en 1924.L’école de le Rose-Croix d’Or.Puis Jean Van Ryckenborgh et son frère Zuvier Willem Leene et Catharose de Petri créèrent  le  Lectorium Rosicrucianum, en se déclarant Rose-Croix gnostique, leur cercle intérieur était une fraternité Cathare.La gnose est aussi présente dans les écrits de Lao Tseu.Les gnostiques Albigeois disaient : « L’Enfer n’existe pas puisque notre Père nous aime ».Dans la déclaration Apostolique Gnostique, Tau Simon Pierre II et Tau Jean Hus, il est dit :« Dans le christianisme originel, il n’y avait des Apôtres, des Prophètes, des Évangélistes, des Pasteurs et des Docteurs (I Cor .12.28 ; Eph 4.11 et Didaché).Ces différents services avaient été établis par Dieu dans son Eglise.En ce temps-là, on ne trouve pas de Pape, de Patriarches de Cardinaux, ni d’Archevêques de moines ou de nonnes.Selon la Didaché, (Enseignement des douze Apôtres ou Doctrine des Apôtres) texte apocryphe de l’Eglise primitive ; il n’existe en fait que deux classe : La classe apostolique, composée des apôtres et des prophètes et la classe des fonctionnaires composées des diacres presbytres et évêques.Les seuls officiants  de l’Eglise primitive étaient ‘’Anciens’’ Président’’ ou ‘’Évêque’’.Dans 1Tim.3.2 on lit que la condition pour exercer cette tâche était qu’un tel homme devait être marié.Plus loin il est dit : »Comment pourrait-il y avoir un homme (le Pape) qui puisse être à la tête de l’Eglise, alors que le Christ lui-même, selon les Écritures, en est la Tête ?Plus loin encore, il est dit : Dans le troisième paragraphe, abrogation des Ordres mineurs et majeurs qui sont fondus en un seul Ordre et désirant revenir à la simplicité des Évangiles primitifs, nos instituons comme seul et unique médium de l’Esprit Saint avec toutes les charges apostoliques qui s’y rapportent etc. etc.Aussi bien que les hommes et les femmes peuvent se voir conférer la charge épiscopaleDe nos jour nous trouvons l’Eglise Gnostique Chaote, elle n’est pas dirigée par aucun Patriarche, aucune Matriarche, aucun Synode exécutif, aucun collectif, ne possédant aucune structure administrative, financière, dogmatique, ni hiérarchique, comportant qu’un seul Ordre, celui des évêques gnostiques, les choses apostoliques sont : l’Exorcisme, les soins aux malades, la propagation de la gnose, l’enseignement et la garde des saintes Écritures gnostique.Elle ne comporte aucun lieu de culte, son seul chef est le Christ.Si vous cherchez honneurs et gloire, argent, beauté et beaux Habits de carnaval, passez votre chemin (Tau Héliogabale).

8:31am Woke up after a couple dreams. I’m going to watch church from home this morning, I’m still not ready to go in person. Feeling a little anxious about just watching online but still looking forward to it. I did the quick breathing exercise through Headspace this morning and it was alright. I also watched the beginning of the video called the wake up and it was about mindfully using technology. The action I made after watching was to turn off notifications for some apps, like Facebook. I’ll look forward to their Sunday Scaries podcast today.

8:38am I’ve been enjoying and seeing benefits from breathing exercises. I think it helps me relax and practice mindfulness. Mindfulness can help me manage stress and anxiety and learn self awareness about how I think. I’m learning to study how it feels to breathe. I might come back to thinking about this

8:43 am going to turn on Sirius XMU. Tenderness by Jay Som was on when I turned on the radio. I find this radio station to be nice to listen to because the DJs are chill and interesting and know their music. Don’t mean to turn this into an ad, but it’s ok, this is just a journal entry. Calling this an ad is a bit excessive, just noting that I found a radio station I like.

8:50am Kind of looking forward to the day. Momentarily felt a bit stressed out. Journaling does help. I kind of want to learn more about the benefits of journaling so I can better make use of the practice. I currently mainly use it to catalog my thoughts, but it would be nice to dig deeper into stuff and maybe find some material for art.

8:55am I can tell I’m conscious that I’ll be posting this online. I kind of wish that wasn’t the case and I could just share my thoughts but it’s ok, it’s a learning experience to share like this. Anyway, it’s time to get set up for church online.

12:05pm Ate some leftover pizza this noon, I was hungry but now I feel better. Bible class after church should be interesting this year, about the book of Revelation. I’ll be interested to learn about it.

Started listening to XMU again just now, a good Sunday activity. I’m going to try reading Refuse by Julian Randall. I’ve been looking forward to reading it but expect it to be kind of intense. Thinking about going to get a coffee in Minneapolis before the Vikings game. We’ll see what happens, I have chores to do too.

12:44pm Read a few poems from the beginning of the book. I put it down and am still listening to the radio. Clairo is on, the song Sophia. It’s kind of an intense book and I wasn’t really feeling affected by it very fully, but maybe I don’t have to in the first reading. Yeah, I really like listening to the radio as a Sunday activity, I find it relaxing. Texting my mom now. She’s preparing for teachers conference today and going to watch the Vikings play. She reminded me of exercise and going to the gym. That would be a good self-care practice too. Maybe I’ll go for a walk. I think I’ve decided I’ll go into Minneapolis for that coffee before the game. Now listening to Rae Street by Courtney Barnett. I like the song.

3:55pm watching the Vikings game and it’s on commercial. I did end up getting coffee in Minneapolis. Feeling a little tired. I should do some chores while I watch.

7:23pm While watching the game, I did a few chores which was productive. I also went on my phone during the game and explored the Headspace app. One thing I did was learn about chronotypes. It is defined in your DNA and determines your best schedule for productivity throughout the day. I am a bear which is the most common of four types. I could still learn more about what it actually means. It is mainly related to a sleeping and eating schedule. I’ll get the name of the guy who talked about this in a book I haven’t read called the Power of When. The guy is Dr. Michael Breus for what it’s worth. Kind of interesting to me. Related is my experience trying to be more mindful about how I have settings in my phone. I took off notifications for a few apps including Facebook which has been nice. I haven’t cared about Facebook alerts in quite a while. Related to Headspace, I also listened to the Sunday Scaries podcast episode from today. It’s a short podcast with a short breathing exercise and helpful tips for the coming week. This time was an introduction basically to the work I’ve been doing using the app for working through anxiety. It’s just the start, but it’s encouraging to think about how far I’ve come in that Headspace program. I still have a ways to go to get mindfulness to help even more with anxiety, and using breathing exercises as well.

One other thing I did during the game was start shopping for a car which is not a task I enjoy really. It’ll be fun to update my ride lol but also used car prices have risen and it’s uncertain if they’ll go back down. I’ll try to keep looking regularly for several weeks.

Listening to the radio again while journaling. That thought interrupted my line of thinking about the Headspace app, and I’m trying to navigate how much of this journaling will be stream of consciousness. Sometimes my thoughts can get somewhat scatterbrained which isn’t helpful for a blog. Normally in my private journal I let the thoughts be scatterbrained because that is true stream of consciousness and it’s fun to see how the stream of consciousness works. I think I’ll experiment with and without editing related thoughts together in different posts and see what feels better. I found the need to organize placement of topics here a bit, while maintaining integrity of the writing for the most part.

Lying in my bed rn and journaling on my phone. That’s my normal setup. This song by PJ Harvey is kind of hot lol. It’s called Rid of Me. Self conscious that I’m basically an ad for this radio station but also the songs in this blog post could be a decent playlist so there’s that. On that note I’m excited to listen to the new collaborative album between Sufjan Stevens and Angelo de Augustine. I like what I’ve heard by way of introduction so far.

I went for a walk after the Vikings’ win. It was nice getting outside. I momentarily felt anxious about the coming week, but remembered to return my focus to the present moment which helped. It is now 8:00 so I’ve been at this a while.

8:50 My phone died so I took the opportunity to watch CNBC Street Signs (Asia) and fold clothes, I was surprised by my energy to do a chore. After I finished that, I realized it wouldn’t take long to clean the bathroom so I did most of that quickly too. Quite pleased I could get those things done. I also got laundry done today too, so pretty productive. Cleaning your space can be part of self care, so it’s good to do that. Exercise is part of it as well, so it’s good I got a walk.

9:02pm I should do the next Headspace exercise. They have been relaxing this past week.

9:24pm I finished the tenth and last session in part two of the course on managing anxiety. I do feel a sense of accomplishment even though it took a while to get through it. I was consistent in the last week or so and the sessions went well. I’m looking forward to the next ten sessions. They’ll talk about framing the exercise to get the most out of it.I think I’m going to leave it here and watch some of the Circle on Netflix which is a show that makes me laugh. Unmade Man is a very short VN game spanning a small conversation between you and Donovan a trader of sort during a zombie apocalypse. Exchanging some small talk is never unwelcome...

Spoilers ahead. It is recommended to play the game first. The review is based on my understanding/reading of the story.

With the one thousand word and one sprite limit from the jam, Unmade Man is a very short and very sweet game, considering the setting. Through you small conversation with the man, you get to learn about his relationship with a small community (as a lone-wolf type of person, how the world is going (with the zombie roaming around and people looting things willy-nilly), and who he was before the apocalypse (a chemistry student).

The game itself is pretty simple and without consequences: you have two choices prompting slightly different topics, resulting in a bit of conversation. Two runs should be enough to cover all choices.

While the jam was pretty limiting, I did enjoy the choices made for the visual: the broken down city with a hint of nature taking over, the black and pink, the music... Depending on the line uttered, Donovan's facial expression will change.

Even with the incredibly dire setting, the mundane conversation kind of feels like something you'd have when crossing path with an acquaintance on the street, who shares a similar group of connections (save for the actual topics of zombies and looting). It is one of the most compelling and interesting aspect of the post-apocalyptic genre: whether humans strive to (re-)form a society/community or go further into wild behaviour for the sake of survival, what kind of past values and/or morals were kept or went discarded, how connections are formed when one can assume most modern technology does not work, how can people survive still...

I really liked the kindness in the exchanges, with Donovan not just catching up for the sake of catching up, but making a connection with you (even though he likes to be a lone wolf) and advises you on keeping some information for yourself or letting things you are not sure are useful (a.k.a you don't know how to use) for others.

The harshness of the setting (also depicted in the background and in the melancholy of the music) clashes with Donovan's kind behaviour and dashing smile.

Some random notes:

Loved the BDSM style on Donovan. Nothing screams more like post-apocalypse like a good leather and a nice choker.

The Bi-Pride necklace was really cute.

Is Donovan a vampire or does he just have sharp canines??

Weirdly, reminded me of Dalgrhen...

The game doesn't fit in my rating scale lol. Since the VNDB has a 1-10 scale, I'm going there for a good 7. Very enjoyable, even if too short for my taste. Quite lovely. Would waste another 15min replaying it every day.

Cape Fear Parrot Sanctuary Invitation!

So some super cool news happened for me. As a result of my parrots and pirates history article  I put out on both here and Facebook and it’s success, in which I gave a shoutout to the Cape Fear Parrot Sanctuary up in North Carolina (about 3 hrs from me that I have yet to be able to go see), I was contacted by the Sanctuary’s operator (and pirate author) Sophia Cancelli, and extended a personal invitation to not only come visit the Parrot Sanctuary but stay there for a weekend onsite free of charge.  While there, she plans on doing a few things collaborating with me, she is a writer for the French pirate magazine l’Echo des Mers and wants to write an article about me and my stay with the parrots, as well as doing a Vlog for their official Youtube channel about my time at the Sanctuary.  In addition she wishes to travel with me to historic Bath NC to where Blackbeard lived, and co-write an article with her for l’Echo des Mers about the location to be published.  The Cape Fear Parrot Sanctuary is also near the Cape Fear River where pirate captain Stede Bonnet was captured, and near Topsail Island where pirates would lurk behind to pop out at passing victims. The Sanctuary is a forever home to many parrots that have illnesses, or were abandoned. Sophia’s the write of “Pirates for Parrots”, and her book can be found even down in Florida, such as The Pirate Store in St. Augustine.  But yeah, really excited for my upcoming trip, next weekend I believe. Been wanting to at least ‘swing by’ my next time to NC, but never thought I’d receive a personal invitation and accommodations and collaborating with Sophia in both writing and video forms. :)
