Sony launches Alpha 6600 with in-body image stabilisation and enhanced battery life and further boosts the line-up with introduction of Alpha 6100
Sony today announced two new additions to its α™(Alpha™) APS-C series of mirrorless cameras with the launch of the Alpha 6600 (model ILCE-6600) and Alpha 6100 (model ILCE-6100). These new additions to the range integrate Sony’s advanced technologies into compact and lightweight bodies including leading-edge autofocus performance, superb image quality and the very latest video technologies. The new Alpha 6600 has been designed to address the needs of the most demanding photographers and videographers with its versatility making it suitable for multiple types of shooting scenarios and users. The Alpha 6100 is targeted at users who are looking to make the step-up to shooting with interchangeable lens cameras and wish to shoot high-quality photos and videos in a variety of different situations.
The Sony APS-C range has been further strengthened by the launch of two new lenses, the E 16-55mm F2.8 G standard zoom lens and the E 70-350mm F4.5-6.3 G OSS super-telephoto zoom lens. With this announcement, Sony’s versatile E-mount system now features a total of 54 lenses.
“Our ‘One Mount’ strategy to continually expand the E-mount system, cameras and lenses with complete inter-compatibility between full-frame and APS-C, means that we want to offer the widest range of exciting products that customers can select from when choosing the right tool for their needs,” said Yann Salmon Legagneur, Director of Product Marketing, Digital Imaging, Sony Europe. “The APS-C market is extremely important to Sony and the Alpha 6600 and Alpha 6100 are both cameras that pack-in the very latest technology breakthroughs and whether you shoot stills, video or a combination of the two, we are confident that users will be very happy with the results.”
At the heart of both the new Alpha 6600 and Alpha 6100 sit a24.2MP[i] Exmor™ CMOS image sensor, the latest BIONZ X™ image processor and a front-end LSI implemented in Sony’s full-frame cameras. This powerful trio combine to deliver all-round enhancements in image quality and performance across all areas of photo and video capture.
The Alpha 6600 and Alpha 6100 offer a lightning fast autofocus acquisition time of 0.02 seconds[ii]. With 425 focal-plane phase-detection AF points covering approximately 84% of the image area and 425 contrast-detection AF points, the high density and wide coverage of the AF system ensure reliable AF, even in the most challenging light conditions. Both new models benefit from Sony’s ‘Real-time Tracking’ which utilises Sony’s latest algorithm including AI[iii]-based object recognition to ensure that subjects can be captured with excellent accuracy, even via the touch panel on the rear screen. In addition, the new models offer ‘Real-time Eye AF’, the latest version of Sony’s acclaimed Eye AF technology, which employs AI-based object recognition to detect and process eye data in real time, resulting in improved accuracy, speed and tracking performance of Eye AF for both humans and animals[iv], and allows the photographer to concentrate exclusively on composition[v].
An Eye for Detail
Based upon feedback from users of existing Sony APS-C camera users, further features have been added to the Alpha 6600 and Alpha 6100 to fine tune the user experience. These include:
Improved colour reproduction; Algorithms inherited from full-frame models deliver natural colour reproduction, particularly in skin tones Hi-resolution internal 4K[vi] movie recording with full-pixel readout without pixel binning in Super 35mm format with easy smartphone transfers via the Imaging Edge™ Mobile application[vii] Interval shooting[viii] for stunning time-lapse videos 180-degree tiltable, 3.0-type 921k-dot (approx.) LCD touch screen Integrated Microphone input for clear and crisp audio on video recordings
Alpha 6600
Across an ISO range of 100-32000 (expandable to ISO 50 – 102400[ix]),
The new Alpha 6600 offers superb low-noise performance and delivers extremely high-quality images, even in low-light conditions. By applying noise reduction and sharpness processing optimally in each area, Area-specific Noise Reduction and Detail Reproduction Technology greatly reduce noise while preserving high resolution contributing to fine reproduction of subject textures and shadow details.
The Alpha 6600 packs in many of the technology breakthroughs that are attracting praise on Sony’s high-end full-frame cameras. These include:
Sony’s innovative 5-axis in-body image stabilisation system that results in a 5.0-step[x] shutter speed advantage Implementation of the industry-leading[xi] long battery life with Sony Z Battery for the first time on an APS-C camera, enabling extended power performance; approx. 720 still images using viewfinder, approx. 810 images using LCD monitor[xii] A tough magnesium alloy design that is dust and moisture resistant[xiii] Real-time Eye AF for movie shooting[xiv]. When activated, the eye of a subject is automatically tracked with high precision and reliability, allowing the shooter to focus on the content itself as opposed to what is in focus or not in focus. Touch Tracking functionality will also automatically initiate Eye AF when a human subject is selected Integrated headphone jack which allows the user to connect high-quality headphones for accurate monitoring of recorded sound
4K Recordingvi
The Alpha 6600 boasts internal 4K movie recording in Super 35mm format with full pixel readout without pixel binning, to capture approximately 2.4x[xv] the amount of information required for 4K movies (Also available in Alpha 6100). This oversampling results in stunning footage, delivered in the XAVC S™ format with unparalleled resolution. The Alpha 6600 equips an HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma)[xvi]picture profile that supports an instant HDR workflow. Recorded movies played back on an HDR (HLG)compatible TV will appear true-to-life, with no blocked shadows or blown highlights, without the need for colour grading. For users who want to colour grade their footage in post-production, S-Log3 and S-Log2 Gamma profiles are provided.

Sony E 70-350mm F4.5-6.3 G OSS sample gallery: Digital Photography Review
Sony APS-C shooters received some good news this summer in the form of two new E-mount lenses: the 16-55mm F2.8 and 70-350mm F4.5-6.3. Covering a 105-525mm equiv. range, the latter offers powerful reach for crop-sensor Sony cameras. We took to the high seas (okay, we rode a public ferry) to test it out on the mainland and beyond.

What’s New in Lightroom Classic 9.0 (November 2019)?
Tumblr media
Lightroom Classic 9.0 has been released today. This isn’t a 9.0 in the conventional sense, because it’s now subscription software instead of a single payment. New features have been released every couple of months, rather than having to wait for a single x.0 release. In the last year, we’ve had:
8.1 (December 2018) – customize Develop panel order, Book module Snap to Grid, preset management improvements, photo merge improvements
8.2 (February 2019) – Enhance Details, Nikon tethering, Map altitude
8.3 (May 2019) – Texture Slider, Flat Field Correction, Preserved Filename, Faster Import from Memory Card
8.4 (August 2019) – Advanced GPU Improvements, Batch HDR/Panorama Merges, Book Auto-Create Cell, Export as PNG, Collection panel Color Labels, Filmstrip Index Numbers
a mass of mobile and Lightroom Cloud-based improvements, as well as smaller features.
This release upgrades your catalog format, so you can’t easily roll back to 8.4.1. Adobe also moved the Sync.lrdata file to sit alongside the relevant catalog to improve performance and reliability.
The entire Lightroom cloud-based ecosystem has also been updated today too.
Updated System Requirements
On Windows 10, you now need Version 1809 or later. To use GPU acceleration, your graphics card and driver must support DirectX 12.
Windows 7 SP1 64-bit still has limited support, but can’t take advantage of some performance improvements, such as GPU acceleration, or HEIC file format support.
On macOS, you need 10.13 High Sierra or later to run Lightroom 9.0. To benefit from GPU acceleration, you need macOS 10.14.5 or later and a computer that supports Metal. There’s a list of supported hardware here.
Fill Edges for Panorama Merge
Previously, any missing edges caused by creating a panoramic photo would need either cropping or use of Boundary Warp. Now there’s an additional option, a checkbox called Fill Edges, which works similarly to the Content-Fill Aware in Photoshop.
Tumblr media
Export Presets
Many photographers have asked for the Export dialogue to allow multiple exports at the same time. For example, a wedding photographer may want a full resolution set of JPEGs to send to the print lab, a medium resolution screen-sharpened set to give to the bride and groom, and a low resolution watermarked set to upload to an online gallery.
This is now possible using the checkboxes next to presets in the Export dialogue. You can still, of course, simply click the preset you want and export one set of photos.
Tumblr media
Additional Filter Options
Folders and Collections can now be filtered by their colour labels (if used). Also, Image has Depth Map has been added to both Metadata Filters and Smart Collection criteria.
Tumblr media
Keyword Performance
This has now been improved, especially for photos with lots of keywords applied.
Remove Photos Shortcut
To delete all selected photos in Loupe and Develop views, you can use the new shortcut Shift-Delete instead of having to switch back to Grid view.
Develop Presets
The Export command has returned to the right-click menu so you can easily share your presets with others.
Clear History Above Selected History Step
Have you ever experimented on an already-edited photo, and then decided you preferred the earlier version? In 9.0, you can now right-click on a history state and choose Clear History Above This Step to clear the history states of the failed experiment.
Tumblr media
Process Version Auto Update
Any photos currently set to PV3 or PV4 will automatically be updated to the current version (PV5 introduced in 8.0) when you start editing in order to benefit from performance improvements.
Post-Crop Vignette Preview
If GPU acceleration is enabled, the post-crop vignette is visible while cropping.

Tether SDK Update
Nikon Tether SDK is updated to the latest version. This should fix an existing tethering connection issue with the D700 camera. Additionally, new firmware support is included for the D850, Z6 and Z7 cameras. Note that due to an incompatibility between Nikon’s SDK and macOS Catalina, Nikon tethering does not currently work on Catalina.

Sony’s new a6600 flagship APS-C camera adds stabilization and over 2x better battery life
Sony announced two new APS-C mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras at a special event in New York today, and the announcements are big news for anyone who’s looking for a small, capable camera that can handle everything from sport shooting to vlogging. The new a6600 flagship takes everything that is great about the a6400 it introduced earlier this year, and adds a big battery boost, in-body stabilization, a headphone jack and real-time eye autofocus for video.
The a6600 otherwise looks nearly identical to the a6400 on paper – it has the same 24.2 megapixel APS-C sensor, ISO sensitivity that expands all the way up to 102400, burst shooting at up to 11 fps, 3k 40p internal HDR recording and the same quality viewfinder. None of that is in any way a criticism, however – these were all excellent specs when they debuted on the a6400 earlier this year, and they’ll serve a6600 owners just as well.
What’s been added should be plenty exciting, however, since it brings the in-body image stabilization (IBIS) that was present on the a6500 but did not make it into the a6400, which was more capable in many other ways. This is a clutch feature for video creators, and that’s a key market for the a6XXX line for Sony, especially with its class-leading reputation for autofocus and high-quality 4K video capture. Ditto the addition of continuous real-time eye AF during movie recording.
Finally, that bigger Z battery (which debuted on the company’s full-frame mirrorless camera line and brought big battery life gains there) will be a boon to video and still shooters alike. The existing battery that powers the a6400, along with the rest of the line, is rated at 360 shots, but that’s very low compared to the a7 III’s 610 shots, and Sony is saying you’ll get over 2x the shooting time with the Z battery in the a6600 compared to its predecessor.
The a6600 retails for $1,400 U.S. for the body alone, and is available in a kit with the 18-135 lens from Sony for $1,800. It’ll be on sale in November.
Sony also unveiled a new entry-level option in its a6XXX line, the a6100. You get a lot of the benefits of the more expensive cameras here, including the same AF system (albeit without real-time Eye AF for movies, which is only on the a6600), and 4K 30p internal recording. You don’t get S-Log or HLG recording options, or HDR, however, and there’s no in-body stabilization. You’re also stuck with the older battery, lower maximum ISO sensitive (51200 in expanded mode) and a lower resolution electronic viewfinder. Still, all told it’s a good bargain – especially since you get Sony’s outstanding real-time object tracking autofocus feature.
The a6100 retails for $750 U.S. for the body alone, and is available in a kit with the 16-50 lens from Sony for $850, or with both the 16-50 and the 55-210 for $1,100. It’ll be on sale in October.
Finally, there are two new lenses which will be hugely beneficial to Sony APS-C camera shooters looking for pro-level options. The E-mount 16-55 F2.8 G gives you a focal range on par with the best glass available on other camera systems, and the E 70-350mm f4.5-6.3 G OSS gives you a really long reach zoom (105-535mm equivalent on a 35mm) with built-in stabilization in a relatively small package. The new 18-55mm lens sells for $1,400 and will be sold in October, and the 70-350mm goes on sale in November for $1,000.
