Send Down The Rain by Charles Martin
CHARLES MARTIN SEND DOWN THE RAIN
I really enjoyed this novel and kept wanting to get back to it.
It starts with Joseph, known as JoJo, a 62 yr old war veteran who lives in a remote log cabin in the mountains in North Carolina. He lives alone with his Rhodesion Ridgeback dog Rosco. He doesn’t trust himself around people, he has recurring nightmares from his stints in the Vietnamese war and anger blackouts.
However when he hears a childs scream he goes out to help whoever is in trouble. Illegal immigrants Catalina, a young Mexican woman and her two children are cold, lost and hungry and one child is in danger. Jojo helps them & takes them to his cabin. They are being pursued by her drug Lord partner. The family are heading to Florida to the sanctuary of her brother and cousins. Jojo can’t leave them to navigate the journey alone & penniless and so he drives them in his truck. He knows the area well as it is near Cape Sans Blas where he and his mum & brother grew up.
As he heads back he sees the black smoke rising way off in the distance in the direction of his childhood home. He has to investigate. A truck has crashed, the driver declared dead at scene. The police are there and a Senator, his estranged brother.. The deceased was the husband of the owner of the now closed, beach side restaurant, the Blue Tornado. And so begins his contact again with his childhood sweetheart Allie as he tries to help her rebuild her business and her life. He never stopped loving her and a lot of water has passed under the bridge since they last saw each other. He isn’t the person she last knew, he has done & seen some horrendous things but things start to go well and they start to rekindle what they had.
Then the demons begin. The Mexican family are in trouble, secrets he has kept hidden from everyone become public. Life is about to get a lot more interesting for Jojo.
We learn about all their back stories as the story progresses all of which are interesting.
I liked the characters and the storytelling. It does have a romantic theme to it but it wasn’t mushy. I shall defo be reading another by this author.

Pet Friendly Shelter Tips
Citizens and their animals are housed in separate sections of the designated shelter(s). If you need to seek shelter with your pet during a declared emergency the following list will help you be prepared:
Bring your own appropriately sized crate (County resources are limited)
Bring your dogs medications
Bring several days of your animal’s food
Ensure your dog is current on all vaccinations
Bring your own leash and collar. Ensure your dog is trained to walk on a leash
Bring any toys and/or bedding that will make your animal comfortable
If your animal is fearful or shy, bring sheets to cover the crate while still allowing airflow
If you bring a crate place something unique on it to distinguish it from others
Understand that your animal will not be housed in the same section as you; however, you will have access to your animal and are still responsible for their care
Do not buy different snacks or food for the animal that they are not accustomed to, this will often cause the animals to have digestive issues; particularly when they are already stressed
If your animal has any propensity to bite animals or humans, please obtain and utilize a muzzle
Bring spray cleaner, paper towels etc., to be able to clean your animal's crate

Gulf Islands National Seashore (GUIS) will close the Fort Pickens and Okaloosa Areas to day use beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 24 in preparation for Tropical Storm Helene.
The Fort Pickens area, including the campground will be closed effective 12 p.m. on Wednesday, September 25.
The state of emergency covers the majority of Florida's 67 counties, including the Panhandle, the Tampa Bay area and along the state's West Coast and many inland and East Coast counties, too. The original declaration was issued Monday for 41 counties. DeSantis said at a news conference this morning that it was broadened to include 61. The only counties not included are Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin, Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade.
The Madison County Central School will open as a shelter on Thursday 9/26/24 at 10:00 AM. The address is 2093 US 90 W Madison, FL 32340. Please bring any comfort items you require including air mattresses or cots. MRE's will be served for the first 48-72 hours.

Monday 9/23/24: If you are in the Gulf of Mexico area near the Florida Panhandle, now is the time to prepare for a possible major hurricane (Cat 3-5) to hit sometime after 2pm on Thursday September 26th. 41 Florida counties are currently under a state of emergency.
Two models are showing the possibility of a Category 5, so it shouldn’t be ruled out, if you over prepare that’s better than the other scenario.
Current estimates are expecting this to be a LARGE hurricane, so even if you’re not in Florida, you need to make plans and be prepared for evacuations or locking down.
These are some of the latest developments:
Current tracks are still uncertain once it makes landfall, but it’s expected to curve west and be a large rain producer.
