took a crack at drawing some sonic characters, it'd always been on my bucket list and the 3rd movie finally gave me some incentive :3

Here's a MASSIVE Sonic 3 interview, featuring scriptwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller, as well as co-producer Tyson Hesse. This was recorded before the film's release so minimal spoilers.

I really suggest watching the whole thing, there's plenty of cool info about the production of these movies. I compiled some of the highlights under the cut:

- It was SEGA's request to make Movie Sonic an alien. This is a remnant from when they were commited to the "Two Worlds" idea, before they changed their mind on that.

- According to Pat Casey and Josh Miller, part of the reason that the Sony version of the movie fell apart is that they (along with Jeff Fowler, Tim Miller and Neil Moritz) wanted Sonic to be the main character, while the studio pushed for the human actor to be the star.

- There was an outline where Sonic befriended a kid (based on E.T). Tim Miller thought the character was pointless, since Sonic is already the kid, so they decided to pair him up with an adult instead.

- They refer to "The Little Mermaid", "Superman" and "Hellboy" as inspiration for Sonic's story in the first movie.

- The Master Emerald and the Chaos Emeralds were combined to avoid having eight different macguffins in one film, and also to avoid comparisons with "Avengers: Infinity War".

- Pat Casey and Josh Miller feel like part of the job is to NOT be lore experts, but rather people who can look at these things purely as a movie.

- Jim Carrey doesn't like to repeat himself, so they always try to throw new stuff at him every movie so he's more likely to return. This led them to the idea of having him play Gerald. The studio immediately loved the idea, and so did Jim.

- One of the things they knew had to change was the ARK, as the idea of a space colony orbiting Earth for 50 years without anyone noticing didn't mesh well with the grounded world they had set up.

- In some versions Gerald Robotnik was alive as a chaos energy ghost, stuck in-between time.

- They felt Shadow's backstory was extremely important, but knew they could only have so many flashbacks, hence why they wanted to pull aspects of it into the present (such as Gerald).

- Gerald's inclusion was also done to keep Shadow's story from feeling like a retread of Knuckles'. It also helps that while Knuckles' conflict is based on a misunderstanding, Shadow's isn't.

- Tyson Hesse thinks that while keeping Gerald alive at first felt weird to him as a long-time fan, it gave Ivo a lot more to chew on as a character and kept his story from getting stale.

- Jim Carrey's multiple comments regarding Robotnik's broken childhood and hidden vulnerabilities inspired them to explore that side of the character in Sonic 3.

- Pat Casey and Josh Miller's always like to add a little bit of heart where they can. They point to the baseball scene and the bucket list in the first movie, as well the scene between Agent Stone and Tails in 3.

-Jim Carrey first does his scenes exactly as scripted, then tries his own versions, which almost always end up being funnier. Very little of what's in the script actually stays.

- Keanu Reeves was the number one choice for Shadow. With every other character there was a lot of deliberation, but with Shadow they don't think other options were even considered.

- At one point Idris Elba was worried about Knuckles' fear of ghosts being out of character, so they did some research and found out it was already a thing. They can't remember if they got that character trait from somewhere or if it was coincidental.

- Sonic 3 and the Knuckles series were worked on at the same time. Pat Casey and Josh Miller weren't involved, as they were busy with the movie script. Tyson Hesse was involved during the initial stages of the show, leading the story department, but had to leave as soon as production on 3 started.

- They've kept almost the exact same creative team thorough all three movies, including their VFX Supervisor and Animation Director. This helped streamline process, as everyone is already familiar with each other and how things work.

- They point out how rare it is to have a franchise where everyone involved wants to keep coming back. They attribute this to the fact that these movies are entirely staffed by nice people who get along, which isn't too common.

- They claim that the Sonic 3 set was one of the calmest sets they've ever been in. Even all the Gerald and Ivo stuff, which seemed so complicated to make, was hardly an issue.

- With Sonic 2 they ran into some problems due to relying on a single VFX vendor. For Sonic 3 they ran the movie as if they were the VFX vendor, they had all the animators in-house and had all the character assets made internally.

- Tyson Hesse claims that SEGA was completely changed by the movies, and that everything coming out is being done better than it was before. He hopes fans will be able to appreciate how much the movies lifted up the franchise.

It probably wasn't intentional at first, but during Tails' flashback of watching Sonic in the second movie, one of the icons on his computer is labeled "Chao Garden Feed", so clearly visiting that Chao restaurant was on his own bucket list for a long while now

Ideas for a potential shadow spin off

- We of course need background on why Maria was living on the base. Did she have no other relatives and had to move there so her Grandfather could be her guardian? Was she extremely lonely moving there and being the only kid? Is that why she so badly wanted to befriend Shadow, because she quite literally had no one just like he had no one?

- As a throw back to the first movie, Maria also had a bucket list of things she wanted to do with shadow when they grew up (😭) and Shadow sets out to complete it

- This includes things like visiting famous locations, swimming in the ocean, learning a new instrument (which they had already started on with guitar), and going on an adventure together

- Shadow struggling with his identity now that he’s on his own. If he’s not Maria’s friend then who is he? This could really tie into the themes of his game, as well as a good opportunity for “I am all of me”

- Shadow checks on the wachowskis from a distance but dares not intrude. Of course Sonic ends up finding him and they have another heart to heart, letting him know that if he ever needs a friend that he’ll be there

These are very good ideas! I’d especially love the idea of Maria having a bucket list and including Shadow to be a part of her dream!

One thing I’m surprised not many people have talked about, is the concept of Shadow being culture shocked with nature.

I can imagine Shadow being distracted by the jungle when he first arrived back to Prison Island (I say back because we didn’t see him in the forest after he was set free). That was the first time we’ve seen Shadow in nature.

And another shocking thing is nobody mentions Shadow experiencing rain for the first time during White Jungle (when he had to run back to save Rouge).

This is something I really hope the 3rd movie touches on. I do appreciate them acknowledging Sonic, Tails and Knuckles culture shock about Earth. But the difference is the Wachowski boys’s culture shock is about Earth’s customs (like handshakes, fist bumps, bucket lists) while Shadow’s is about nature.

One thing about him tho is his personality’s always been about positivity, always looking at the bright side and making the best of any situation he’s in. He and movie!shadow have similar stories but their base personalities are really the reason they went in opposite directions after experiencing trauma and loss

Ik in this movie eggmans not as cartoon-villainy as he is in the next movies but omg I love how he is. Plus it makes a lot of sense that although he’s always been pretty eccentric and a little weird, he didn’t go full blown supervillain until he was trapped/isolated on the mushroom planet and lost whatever marbles he still had left.

This may be sonic origin story but it’s also robotniks and I love it so much

A lot of people dunk on this one for being weaker than the other ones but man, they did such a good job 1) building up Sonic’s backstory and character and laying the foundation for why he is the way he is, 2) creating relationships not only between Sonic and his new family but also between Sonic and US, and 3) slowly introducing us into the world of Sonic and friends organically without confusing or exposition dumping on us. It laid the foundation perfectly for the next two movies where we get more and more of the lore and characters we love. Because of this, this’ll always be my favorite Sonic movie of the 3.

Sonic 1 Rewatch in Prep for SONIC 3!!

Ok so I rewatched Sonic 1 tonight in ✨preparation✨ for Sonic 3 on Thursday and yall - these movies are the cutest. Not to mention I work at the movies so you bet I utalized that Laser Projector / Dolby Sound System combo 😤😤

Some notes -

I am so hype to see Sonic 3 on this screen on Thursday - you could see every detail - like tell me why I saw the cakes before Maddie picked them up?? I saw so much detail in the attic - I was fascinated just looking around

My friend (who hasn’t seen these movies yet) leaned over and asked me if Stone and Robotnik were going to Kiss seconds before Robotnik put his hand in Stones Mouth and that cracked me up

THE BUCKET LIST SCENE?? Tom says QUOTE “I don’t plan on dying any time soon” and Sonic responds “Well you’re friends with me now” I fear Foreshadowing™️

Ok so in the theatre I was in, the safely lights are Robotnik Red which GREATLY enhanced the experience just if you have colored lights, you should put them on Gamer Red. Trust.

I totally forgot Wade shoots at Robotnik. He’s really underrated and I worry the TV show flanderized him. He was super enjoyable in this one. I fear Adam Palley hasn’t been at any press events so Wade might not be in the third one, and that would be honestly sad.

I get that I may be the last one to realize this, but I did just get that Sonics naming convention (ie “Donut Lord”, “Pretzel Lady”) was just a really clever way to set up Egg Man and I can’t believe it took me this long to realize that

I’m gonna watch the second one tomorrow and I’ll post a little something then. These movies are just the best - the hype is building and I can’t wait until Thursday.

Doc Drop - The one where sonic amy and tails are about to watch the Mario movie bc it’s all I can think about :)

Sonic leans back in his seat, cradling the bag of popcorn in the crook of his arm and drinking noisily from the Mario cup in his hand.

“Honestly, you’d think he’d have created the first video game adaptation with the amount of people in line out there.” He mutters around the straw in his mouth.

Amy gives him a warning love tap on the shoulder, glaring at him. “Sonic! That’s no way to show support for a friend!”

Sonic grins sheepishly. “Aw, c’mon, Ames, I was only kidding!”

She narrows her eyes and takes some of the popcorn from his bucket. “Sonic T. Hedgehog,” She warns, wagging a finger at him, “we are going to show support for our friends and enjoy the movie.”

Sonic gives a relenting shake of his head right as Tails shuffles in front of them, crossing to get to his seat. He’s donning a Luigi suit, much to Sonic’s earlier conflict. Bright, giddy, blue eyes look onto Sonic in excitement only to pout and level him with a frown.

Oh boy, what now?

“Sonic, where’s your hat?”

Chaos.

“Tails, I never agreed to—”

“Found it!” Amy chirps, pulling the infamous red hat seemingly from out of nowhere. “Here you go, Sonic.”

He gives her a deadpanned look, glances at Tails’s pleading expression, and sighs. He accepts the hat with a mumbled thanks and sets it on his head, relenting again to appease his best buddy.

Ecstatic, Tails settles into his seat, adjusting the denim straps of his overalls with a big smile on his face and shakes a box of Reese’s, silently offering some to Sonic. “I’ve heard they’ve got a ton of references to the games and even the consoles! I wanna see if I can manage to find them all the first watch!”

Sonic accepts the Reece’s, munching on them quietly and raising his brows in mild interest. He’d also heard about the many nods to the classics and was sort of curious to see how often they’d fit something in.

Most of his curiosity stemmed from seeing whether watching this was going to be worth the time; sitting down for so long watching his (technically) oldest rival have all the fun onscreen wasn’t how he imagined a fun night to go.

“Oh! Did you hear there are post credit scenes?” Amy pipes up, flapping her hands in Tails direction, nearly whacking Sonic on the nose. He smirks and sits up, providing her more space. “I think they said there was two, hang on—” She turns back into her seat, pulls out her phone and types with a speed rivaling his own.

“Ooh, a post credit scene!” Tails says, before taking a second to finish the reeces in his mouth. “I wonder if it’ll tease the next movie like yours did, Sonic!”

Sonic huffs, snickering at the possibility. “I wouldn’t be surprised if it was better than mine. Doesn’t take much to beat that ‘Shadow Reveal.’”

Amy elbows him and he breaks out into an apologetic laugh. “Right, right! Supportive, got it!”

“Someone sounds a little threatened.” Tails sings, grinning mischievously and taking his turn to elbow at Sonic.

“Oh, please,” Sonic says, swatting his elbow away without heat. “As if the old man could outsell me. I’ve got two movies already!” He defends, realizing a moment too late that he just played into his little brother’s hands.

Tails laughs and takes a sip from his own (Mario Kids Snack Pack) cup. “You’d be surprised! They’re predicting that it’ll be the biggest opening for a game adaptation.”

“Who’s ‘they’?” Sonic asks confounded and frowning at the big screen that is now littered with… ducks… Okay.

“The movie analysts or critics or something.” Amy says rolling her eyes. She reaches over Sonic again, this time to enthusiastically share the contents of her screen to Tails. Sonic scoots into the corner so his seat to get a peek as well. “Look! TWO credit scenes AND they have some of the user scores out now!”

Tails gasps behind a hand. “I knew the user scores would be higher, but not by THIS much!”

Sonic grins, scrutinizing the list of red and yellow reviews. “What, the critics said it was bad or something?” He scrolls to the top, catches the words ‘disappointment’ and ‘empty,’ and chuckles.

Amy gives him a solemn nod and turns her phone on silent. “I read through a few of the articles and they were kind of harsh on it. Said that it was too fast paced and unoriginal.”

“Huh.” He says, trying to appear neutral, but the shit-eating grin seeps through and before he knows it he’s full on grinning. “Fast is not how I’d describe Mario.”

Tails shakes his head good-naturedly. “I’ve watched a few non-spoiler reviews and they all said that the movie’s best enjoyed if you know the games. I’m guessing the plot is simple and it’s more focused on action, and maybe a little character.”

“Hah, now we’re talking.” Sonic says, adjusting in his seat and watching the previews with more earnest. “I like a good action movie.”

while browsing the internet on reviews of a book i recently finished, i came across a personal blog of a woman in the uk and i was instantly inspired (i may tag her down the line if i'm feeling brave). i relished in the idea of a new creative outlet and, embarrassingly, a better way to remember pivotal points my life as i got older as my memory isn’t the greatest. a resolution i made this year was to be more creative (more handmade gifts instead of bought ones, etc etc), so here is a step in the right direction (although another resolution was to spend less time online, but i suppose i will pick and choose my battles with that).

so, what will this blog be all about?

well, of course this blog will be about my life - who i am, things i enjoy. maybe some travel posts (2024 was a big travel year for me! i visited 4 new countries and a handful of new states). posts could be long, could be short. just a catch-all really. i'd like to do life recaps - cadence tbd. maybe a weekly life digest? with my high points (and low points) of the week? that could be cool.

this was a huge motivator for me to start this blog. due to being a people pleaser and my inexplicable inability to tell people "no", i have found myself in two different book clubs. now, this isn't necessarily a bad thing. i have wanted to reignite my love for literature and writing (ap lit nerd in hs). but not having read long-form literature in the past couple years besides manga and the occasional fanfiction, coupled with the rise of tiktok and six second videos, my attention span has truly taken a hit. thus, joining not one but two book clubs seems extreme. nonetheless, i will try my best!! i just finished my first book of 2025 and i feel like i am starting to find my stride.

games games games. in the past couple of years after the pandemic, i truly found a hobby in gaming. i, of course, gamed casually as a child (and still have my original pink ds lite with the matching stylus). but my love for gaming really took off as an adult. a few games i am playing at the moment: genshin impact, baldur's gate 3 (second play-through), valorant, the bed we made. honorable mentions: fnaf: security breach (finished but watching the dlc), poppy playtime (new chapter coming next week), and infinity nikki (started but waiting for more content to be added after beta). i also log in to my acnh island from time to time to pick weeds and check on my islanders.

with other hobbies taking precedence, i have not been a very avid movie or tv watcher as of late (which is costing me valuable trivia points). if i had to name my favorite show right this moment, i would have to default to sex and the city. i've rewatched it three times at this point and i love it every time, and would happily rewatch it a fourth time (i'm also living my carrie bradshaw dream with this blog, my very own column (carrie is one of my least fave characters tho just fyi)). tv show currently watching: solo leveling. the last movie i saw in theaters: sonic 3. honorable mention: seeing wicked in the philippines last november was amazing. i love musicals and seeing a show on broadway is a bucket list item of mine. watchlist: endless- it will outlive me.

i'm also very passionate about overall health and wellness! i am a competitive powerlifter and try to stay very active with a goal of 10k steps a day, drink lots of water, eat balanced, etc. i also enjoy activities like snowboarding, climbing, tennis and i go to a local run club every wednesday night. will occasionally share a bit about the topic if i so please.
