Artgerechte Meerschweinchen-Haltung

Was Meerschweinchen brauchen:

-mind. Ein Partnertier, besser ist eine Gruppe. Meerschweinchen sind sehr soziale Tiere und leiden, wenn sie alleine sind. Ein Mensch kann niemals einen gleichartigen Artgenossen ersetzen.

-Ausreichend Platz zum laufen, rennen und toben! Ein Käfig bietet nicht genug Platz. 2-3 Meerschweinchen sollten mind. 2qm Platz haben (siehe TVT-Richtlinien)

kostengünstig und mit wenig Zeitaufwand ein artgerechtes Gehege bauen kann.

Ein Käfig ist lediglich als Heuwanne ohne Gitter zu gebrauchen!

-Artgerechte Ernährung: Wiese, Kräuter, Salat. Heu und Wasser ad libitum. Gemüse nur sehr selten.

-dauerhaft Futter: Meerschweinchen haben nicht wie es noch fälschlicherweise oft heißt einen „Stopfmagen“, sondern nur eine schlecht ausgebildete Darmmuskulatur, daher benötigen sie stetig Futter um ihre Darmfunktionen am Laufen zu halten. Wenn ein Meerschweinchen nicht frisst, ist das ein absoluter Notfall!

-In Außenhaltung ein gesichertes Gehege (Wetterschutz gegen Regen, Kälte und Hitze): ein festes Gehege mit isolierter Schutzhütte (Käfige aus dem Zoofachhandel sind nicht isoliert). Der zusätzliche Auslauf muss von allen Seiten (oben, unten, alle 4 Seiten) mit punktgeschweißtem Volierendraht 10 mm Maschenweite, 1,2 mm Stärke (nicht Hasendraht!) gesichert sein. Netzabdeckungen und kaufbare Fertiggehege sind leider nicht raubtiersicher!

-die Häuser sollten immer 2 Eingänge haben, da sie sich in Häusern mit nur einem Eingang einkesseln und nicht ausweichen / flüchten können. Pro Schweinchen sollten 2 Häuser vorhanden sein, dazu zählen auch Kuschelhöhlen, Hängematten und Burgtürme. Besonders Hängematten werden gern genutzt.

-einen Fachtierarzt für Heimtiere! Die meisten Tierärzte sind „nur“ Tierärzte für Kleintiere, also Hunde, Katzen, Pferde. Ihnen fehlt die Spezialisierung auf die kleinen Heimtiere wie Meerschweinchen, Kaninchen, Vögel etc. Ohne diese Spezialisierung und das Fachwissen kann ein harmloser Tierarzt-Besuch leider sogar tödlich enden (z.B. durch den Kieferspreizer).

-einen wöchentlichen Gesundheits-Check. Meerschweinchen leiden still und zeigen ihre Krankheiten oft erst wenn es schon zu spät ist, daher ist es wichtig sie genau zu beobachten, das Gewicht zu kontrollieren, die Krallen, die Zähne, die Geschlechtsteile etc.

Was Meerschweinchen nicht brauchen:

-Gitterstäbe (Tatsächlich sind Käfige auch seit Oktober 2020 nicht mehr zur Haltung von Meerschweinchen zugelassen!)

Ein handelsüblicher Käfig bietet meist nicht einmal 1qm Platz (häufig nur 0,50qm bis maximal 0,80qm)! Das ist vergleichbar mit einer Besenkammer beim Menschen, das wäre so als wenn man direkt neben dem Bett, den Essplatz und die Toilette stehen hätte, nicht besonders angenehm und leider auch viel zu klein. Die Tiere können sich nicht aus dem Weg gehen, es gibt Streitigkeiten, sie sitzen viel zu lange im Kot und werden schnell krank.

Auch doppelstöckige Käfige sind nicht geeignet (ältere Tiere benutzen häufig keine Rampen und es kommt an den Ein- / Ausgängen zu Streitigkeiten). Eine zweite Etage zählt nur zur gesamten Grundfläche, wenn die Etage mindestens 1qm groß ist.

-Menschen, die sie mit ins Bett nehmen. Meerschweinchen sind Beobachtungstiere und keine Kuscheltiere. Sie mögen es nicht angefasst zu werden und leiden unter Stress. Auch Kostüme und Leinen sind Tierquälerei!

-Trockenfutter, Pellets, Knabberstangen mit Zucker, Brot, bunte Drops.

In diesen Leckerlies sind viele Inhaltsstoffe drin, die Meerschweinchen nicht vertragen (Getreide, Mais, Honig, Milch, Nüsse), sie sind zu hart für die Zähne und schädigen die Darmflora. Meerschweinchen brauchen auch keine Salzlecksteine oder Stroh (vertragen kein Getreide).

Als Leckerlis können weiche Erbsenflocken oder Obst gegeben werden.

Meerschweinchen zerkauen ihre Nahrung nicht sondern mahlen mit den Zähnen, daher sind harte Pressblöcke oder Karotten ebenfalls nicht geeignet. Hartes Wurzelgemüse darf als Leckerli kleingeschnitten oder geraspelt gegeben werden, aber nicht zu viel, da sie sehr zuckerhaltig sind und schnell dick machen.

Meerschweinchen sind folivore, also Blattfresser, daher ist die beste Nahrung für sie: Wiese, Kräuter, Salate, wenig Gemüse.

- Meerschweinchen sollten nicht stundenweise im ungesicherten Garten rumlaufen (Stress durchs umsetzen, ungewohnte Umgebung, Hitzschlag, Blasenentzündung, Tod durch Beutegreifer), es ist stressfreier Wiese zu pflücken und zu ihnen zu bringen, als andersherum.

Meerschweinchen aus Innenhaltung dürfen erst ab Ende Mai in Außenhaltung ziehen, sollten die Tiere auch im Winter draußen gehalten werden, müssen es dauerhaft mindestens 4 Tiere sein um die Wärme in der Hütte halten zu können, ansonsten müssen sie im Oktober wieder in Innenhaltung ziehen. Zwischen Oktober und Mai sollten Meerschweinchen nicht einfach so rein- oder rausgesetzt werden. (Erkältung, Blasenentzündung, Schock, Tod).

Meerschweinchen können Temperaturunterschiede von über 10 Grad (z.B. Haus 20 Grad, draußen 30 Grad) nicht besonders gut vertragen, daher sollten sie nicht in der Mittagshitze im Hochsommer rausgesetzt werden. Ab 25 Grad besteht bei Meerschweinchen bereits Hitzschlaggefahr.

Pelican Mouth Brand has become my word for the gibberish brand name stuff that comes from Amazon and similar places. Now, there's not necessarily anything wrong with Pelican Mouth Brand.
