it is a soft morning at the phantomhive manor. the sky outside is overcast, with gentle light filtering through the windows. in the kitchen, you’re cleaning up after breakfast, humming quietly to yourself as you work. you try to focus on the tasks at hand, but your thoughts keep drifting to a certain guest in the manor.

prince soma has been staying with the phantomhives for a few weeks now. he’s charming, lively, and full of joy—always so bright, even when the world around him seems a little dark. you admire him from afar, feeling something in your chest you can’t quite name. but it’s not just admiration; it’s something deeper. every time he smiles at you, you feel like you’re floating, your heart fluttering like the wings of a bird trying to break free.

but you know it’s not right. he’s a prince, after all. and you… you’re just a servant. your hands are worn from work, your clothes plain and simple. what could someone like him ever want with someone like you?

despite your attempts to keep your distance, you can’t help but notice how his gaze lingers on you sometimes. how he makes excuses to talk to you, asks for help with things he doesn’t really need help with. at first, you think it’s just his way—prince soma is kind to everyone, after all. but then there are moments when it feels like more. moments when his eyes hold something beyond friendship, something warm and inviting.

you shake your head, trying to clear those thoughts away. it doesn’t matter. you’re just imagining things. “y/n,” a familiar voice breaks through your thoughts, making you jump slightly. you turn around to see sebastian standing in the doorway, his usual calm expression in place. “are you alright?”

you nod quickly, not wanting to seem distracted. “yes, sebastian, i’m fine.”

he raises an eyebrow, clearly not convinced, but he doesn’t press the issue. instead, he walks further into the kitchen and sets down the tray he’s holding. “the young master is asking for you. once you’re finished here, please attend to him.”

“of course,” you say, bowing your head slightly. sebastian gives you a small smile before leaving the room, his footsteps silent as always.

once he’s gone, you let out a long breath. you glance out the window again, wondering what prince soma is doing. you hope he’s not nearby. every time you see him, it’s harder to keep your feelings at bay.

that afternoon, you find yourself in the garden, carefully trimming the rose bushes. the air is crisp, the faint scent of flowers and earth filling your lungs. you’re focused on your work, trying not to think too much, when you hear footsteps behind you.

“y/n,” the voice is soft and familiar, and your heart skips a beat before you even turn around.

prince soma stands there, smiling at you like he always does. he has that warmth in his eyes again, the kind that makes you feel like the sun is shining just for you.

“prince soma,” you say, bowing your head slightly, trying to keep your voice steady. “can i help you with something?”

he shakes his head, stepping closer. “no, i just wanted to talk to you.”

you swallow, your hands tightening around the shears you’re holding. “about what?”

he hesitates for a moment, his smile fading just a little. then he takes a deep breath, as if gathering his courage. “y/n, i… i’ve been meaning to tell you something for a while now.”

your heart pounds in your chest, your mind racing with possibilities. but you already know what he’s going to say, don’t you? deep down, you’ve known for some time.

“i like you,” he says, his voice soft but steady. “i mean, really like you. i know it might seem strange, with me being a prince and all, but… i don’t care about that. i don’t care about titles or status. i just care about you.”

his words hang in the air between you, so full of hope and sincerity that it makes your chest ache. you want to say something—anything—but the words are stuck in your throat. he steps closer, his hand reaching out to gently take yours. “y/n, please… do you feel the same?”

you stare down at your hands, your heart breaking even as you feel the warmth of his touch. you want to say yes, more than anything. you want to throw your arms around him and tell him how much you care for him, how much you’ve wanted this. but you can’t. you’re not good enough for him. you’re not fit to be with someone like him.

“i… i can’t,” you whisper, your voice barely audible. he looks confused, his brows furrowing in concern. “what do you mean?”

you pull your hand away, stepping back from him. “you’re a prince, soma. and i’m just… i’m just a servant. it wouldn’t be right. people would talk. they would never accept it. and… and i don’t deserve someone like you.”

his expression softens, a hint of sadness entering his eyes. “y/n… you’re not just a servant. you’re so much more than that. you’re kind, strong, and brave. and i care about you—none of that other stuff matters to me.”

but you shake your head, tears welling up in your eyes. “it matters to me,” you say, your voice breaking. “i can’t… i can’t be with you, soma. it wouldn’t work. i’m sorry.”

you turn away from him, unable to bear the hurt in his eyes any longer. you can feel the tears spilling down your cheeks, but you don’t wipe them away. instead, you just walk, each step feeling heavier than the last.

later that evening, you find yourself standing outside, staring up at the darkening sky. the stars are beginning to appear, twinkling faintly in the distance. you feel empty, like a part of you has been taken away.

“y/n.”

you turn your head to see sebastian standing beside you, his usual composed expression in place. you hadn’t heard him approach, as usual, but somehow his presence brings a sense of comfort. “sebastian,” you whisper, your voice barely more than a breath. “am i… am i doing the right thing?”

sebastian looks at you for a long moment before speaking. “the right thing is often difficult to define, especially when it comes to matters of the heart. but what matters most is what you believe is right.”

you wipe at your eyes, trying to stop the tears. “it hurts,” you admit. “i care about him so much, but… but i’m not good enough for him.”

sebastian’s gaze softens, just slightly. he steps closer, placing a hand on your shoulder in a gesture that is surprisingly gentle. “you are more than good enough, y/n. but the choice is yours to make. no one can make it for you.”

you look up at him, searching his face for some kind of answer. but there is only understanding there, and maybe a hint of something fatherly, something protective. “thank you,” you whisper.

he gives a small nod, his hand lingering on your shoulder for a moment longer before he steps back. “the young master is asking for you again,” he says, his tone returning to its usual calm. “but if you need more time, i can tell him to wait.”

you shake your head, taking a deep breath and steadying yourself. “no, i’m alright. i’ll go now.”

sebastian gives you a small smile, and you feel a flicker of warmth in your chest. it isn’t much, but it’s enough to help you find your strength again.

as you walk back toward the manor, your heart still aches, but you know you’ve made the right choice. even if it hurts, even if it means pushing away someone you care about, you have to do what you believe is right.

and maybe, just maybe, in time, the pain will fade.

The social media company X is closing its San Francisco office “over the next few weeks,” according to an internal email sent out by CEO Linda Yaccarino earlier today. “This is an important decision that impacts many of you, but it is the right one for our company in the long term,” Yaccarino wrote in the email, first reported by The New York Times.

Employees in San Francisco reportedly will be moved to new locations in the Bay Area, “including the existing office in San Jose and a new engineering focused shared space with [xAI, Musk’s AI startup] in Palo Alto,” the note said. The company’s executive team is said to be working on “transportation options” for staff. X did not respond to WIRED's request for comment.

The official announcement comes a few weeks after Musk said in a post on X that he planned to move X and SpaceX headquarters to Texas. X would move to Austin, specifically, Musk said at the time. Bloomberg reported earlier this year that X had already been staffing up a trust and safety team for X based in Austin.

While the state of Texas is known to be more business-friendly than California—it has one of the lowest tax burdens in the US—Musk’s publicly stated reasoning for the move to Texas was more ideological than financial. He said at the time that the “final straw” was a new California law that aims to protect the privacy of transgender children, which he perceived to be “attacking both families and companies.” He also said that he’s “had enough of dodging gangs of violent drug addicts just to get in and out of the building.”

The latest update from Yaccarino suggests it’s the San Francisco office, specifically, that is the thorn in X’s side. And it’s an about-face for Musk, who tweeted a year ago that, despite incentives to move out of San Francisco, X would not move its HQ out of the city. “You only know who your real friends are when the chips are down,” he waxed poetically on X. “San Francisco, beautiful San Francisco, though others forsake you, we will always be your friend.”

The shuttering of the X office marks the end of an era for the company formerly known as Twitter, and for the historic Mid-Market neighborhood that in the 2010s managed to lure in burgeoning tech companies like Twitter, Uber, Spotify, and Square.

Twitter’s earliest offices were in SoMa, or the South of Market neighborhood of San Francisco, until 2011, when then mayor Ed Lee instituted a controversial tax break for tech companies. The ruling erased the 1.5 percent payroll tax for companies that moved into certain Mid-Market buildings. Twitter jumped at the opportunity.

The company was considered an anchor tenant in a densely populated neighborhood marked by homelessness and open drug use. Suddenly an airy, high-end food market, a Blue Bottle Coffee shop, and tech workers with MacBooks and overpriced sneakers dotted Market Street, alongside people in various states of distress camped out in front of still-vacant storefronts.

The end results of Lee’s tax breaks and revitalization plans for the neighborhood are a topic of debate, and the pandemic has been a hugely complicating factor, with reports suggesting that San Francisco’s office spaces are more than a third vacant on average.

Musk, now famously, carried a sink into the Twitter offices just after he closed the deal to buy the platform in October 2022, tweeting, “Let that sink in!” After changing the company name to X in summer 2023, Musk erected a giant, blinking X atop the offices, only to be compelled to take it down days later when the San Francisco Department of Building Inspection received dozens of complaints about the flashing lights and concerns about the sign’s structural safety.

X also was allegedly a poor tenant in the Musk era: Its landlord, SRI Nine Market Square, in early 2023 filed a suit against X for more than $3 million in unpaid rent. SRI Nine Market sought to extend Twitter’s line of credit to $10 million as an assurance that future rent would be paid. Other vendors also have sued X for failing to pay its bills.

But in January of this year, SRI Nine Market dropped the case, Reuters reported. It’s unclear why. SRI Nine Market did not respond to an inquiry on the current state of X’s lease and whether the company would be breaking said lease by vacating its office space in the coming weeks.
