Disney Branded Television Greenlits ‘Sofia the First: Royal Magic,’ Sequel To ‘Sofia the First’ Slated For A 2026 Release Date.
Today, Disney Jr. announced a series greenlight for “Sofia the First: Royal Magic” a continuation of “Sofia the First” and remains one of the most successful global preschool franchises for The Walt Disney Company. The spin-off got picked up for development back in November 2022 under the working title ("Royal Prep Academy")
“Sofia the First: Royal Magic” follows Sofia as she attends The Charmswell School for Royal Magic, where princes and princesses from across the EverRealm will continue their royal studies and also learn all types of magic. During her time at Charmswell, Sofia discovers she is the most magical princess in the realm and must learn how to master her powers while making new royal friends. Each episode will contain two 11-minute stories, each with a new original song. The sequel is created and executive produced by original series creator Craig Gerber. Ariel Winter (“Modern Family”), who voiced the role of Sofia, in the original series, is set to reprise her role. Additional casting will be announced at a later date. Many of the creative team from “Firebuds” are involved in this series, including Krystal Banzon as co-executive producer and story editor, Kris Wimberly as supervising director, and Craig Simpson as producer. The series is produced by Disney Television Animation. The new series is currently in production and is slated for a 2026 premiere on Disney Jr. and Disney+
Gerber added, “I’m incredibly excited for the chance to return to Sofia’s enchanted world and tell the next chapter in her story. At a new school specializing in royal magic, Sofia will learn how to master her magical abilities while discovering the power of friendship and teamwork from her new royal classmates. Over the years, I have heard countless stories of how much the original series meant to young viewers and I’m hoping the new show will delight the next generation of preschoolers.”
Ayo Davis, president, Disney Branded Television and VP of Current and Development at Disney Television Animation said, “Since its debut in 2012, ‘Sofia the First’ captured the hearts and imaginations of preschoolers everywhere for its beloved characters, memorable music, adventurous spirit and meaningful storylines. The enduring charm and appeal of Sofia is undeniable, and we’re excited to continue sharing her journey in ‘Sofia the First: Royal Magic.’”
The “Sofia the First” franchise still holds the record for the Top 3 cable TV telecasts for Girls 2-5 and, lifetime to date, has garnered over 755 million views on Disney Junior YouTube.
Sofia The First: Royal Magic is one of the many projects by Disney Television Animation to introduce the studio's iconic franchises and charactes to a new generation of fans, other projects include "The Proud Family: Louder And Prouder", Disney Junior's "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse 2.0", "Phineas And Ferb" as a revival and a reboot of "Darkwing Duck" by Point Grey Pictures (Nickelodeon Animation Studios "Tales Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles")
New interations of "TaleSpin" also by Point Grey Pictures (Nickelodeon Animation Studios "Tales Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles") & "Recess" with the original creators are in very early development at the studio.

THE NEW StF SERIES COMES OUT IN 2026!!
And OMGGGGG, I SCREAMED WHEN I HEARD WHAT IT'S ABOUT:
So, I guess she's not going to EverRealm Academy after all? Interesting how this Charmswell wasn't one of the school choices available in that one StF episode. I didn't even know there was a school specifically for ROYAL kids to learn magic!
And she discovers she's the most magical princess in the EverRealm and needs to learn how to master her new powers?? AAAAAAAAHHHH!! :D :D
Cedric is gonna be SO proud of her!! And come on, Cedric has GOT to play a role in this! Especially as Sofia's mentor!
It doesn't say if any other former StF cast/characters are returning, except for Ariel Winter as Sofia, but COME ON, CEDRIC!!!
And again, it's a musical!!
My only concern- and it's a big one- is that instead of each episode being half an hour (22 minutes), it's going to be the format of two 11-minute stories told over 22 minutes.
Which tells me the show might be dumbed down for a "modern young audience" with short attention spans, and not focused as much on storytelling, plot, adventure, and character development, and likely no high stakes. I'm worried it won't be nearly as engaging, and will be a much more simplified show instead of treating kids like they're smart. 💀 In other words, it might be another example of corporations churning out quick, disposable content instead of quality.
So... I'm VERY torn how to feel.

do you think that now sofia is older and at older kid school, we'll get to see and know more about some other characters older siblings?? like ive always wondered about the things they could do for hildegards (bad) arc by involving her older sister that we see like once
i also wonder what arcs characters will go through because they already did the basic ones...like will amber have to learn more about the responsibilities of being heir to the throne?? will james do absolutely nothing like in the og series??? what in the HELL is cedric gonna do????
the new series is abuout specifically magic so he HAS to have a pretty big role but like...what is it. and what arc will he go through? he's already gone from bad to good? will he be tempted to be evil again?? will he just. stay the same as he was at the end of the series??? will they be so confused as to what they do with him that they either write him out or...*shutters* give him a love intrest..?
or maybe cedric and roland will fall in love and they'll kill off miranda in the first episode /j

A thought I've had lately regarding Royal Magic: I would really love it if we see Greylock teaching at Charmswell as part of his community service for trying to take over Rudistan.
#it's probably the recent influx of greylock art in the tag#but still that would be so great#sofia the fandom#sofia the first#royal magic#sofia the first royal magic#greylock the grand#greylock

The Amulet of Avalor: A blessing and a curse in the new series.
I have a feeling they're going to end up having to reduce the narrative influence of the Amulet of Avalor.
When it comes to the amulet, it's possible that they reduce its powers in some way. Or magically signals that Sofia no longer needs it, and that it should look for a new carrier, breaking her promise for the greater good.
( Or will it continue in the family? Will Miranda and Roland have a new member in the family? An adopted child, or perhaps a baby? Perhaps Aunt Tilly and Sir Bartley will have a child and Sofia will present the child with the amulet. )
Perhaps Sofia loses the amulet, implying that the amulet would be found by a new princess without Sofia having to break her promise.
Or, in a more "dark" alternative, the amulet becomes defective or breaks completely. Making it impossible for it to be used by her.
( Until it is fixed in a convenient way, so that it doesn't break the lore logic about the amulet being worn by multiple Disney princesses.)
Because its powers if they were "unlocked" at the grand finale of Sofia The First, and with Sofia's character development, the chances of her being cursed by it are reduced.
And if Sofia, using the Amulet of Avalor, doesn't have many challenges for her, what will the next challenges be?
On the merchandising front: if they decide to reuse the amulet, it's possible it will get an updated look.
If it already changed color during the series after Elena was freed from inside it, it's likely that it will undergo design changes in the new series as well.
( Whether it will get better or worse is debatable.)
What if they decide that the amulet is no longer viable as a recognizable source of merchandising? And that they need something more iconic and unique for the new series?
They will probably come up with some excuse as to why the amulet is no longer present, and have come up with a new "more magical and fantastic " item for Princess Sofia.
( Which also, will be equally debatable whether the change will be for the better or worse.)
And you guys? What do you think about this? I would like to know your opinion.

Plot description of Royal Magic, the sequel to Sofia the First
(wow, I was still a kid when the original was airing. and I'm a teenager now, waiting for the sequel to release lol)
"Sofia the First: Royal Magic follows Sofia as she attends The Charmswell School for Royal Magic, where princes and princesses from across the EverRealm will continue their royal studies and also learn all types of magic. During her time at Charmswell, Sofia discovers she is the most magical princess in the realm and must learn how to master her powers while making new royal friends. Each episode will contain two 11-minute stories, each with a new original song."
what interests me here is Sofia finally realizing she's kinda OP for her age and the 11 min episodes. the former is funny, the latter is gonna be interesting because I think they could do something cool with shorter stories, but it's probably not too much to worry about because we'll probably get important 22 min episodes too
either way it'll be cool to see it get serialized eventually
uhh yeah I guess I just got outed as a sofia the first fan.......lol

At the new upcoming series Sofia The First: Royal Magic, Sofia is studying at the "Charmswell School for Royal Magic"
But if I remember well, Sofia and Amber were going to the same school after the Royal Prep. Season 4 episode 24. Sofia chooses the same school as Amber "Guess I'm staying with you at the EverRealm". Weird name for a school actually, because as we know, EverRealm is the name of the Sofia The First "world" or "region". I don't know it that counts as a name for this school. In the Brazillian portuguese dub, Sofia says that the name of the school is "Kingdoms Academy". During the song in english, original language of the show, Amber calls it "EverRealm Academy"
I don't think that's the same school mentioned in the upcoming spin off series, also based on what each one of these schools are described to teach:
The premise of the school chosen by Amber and Sofia at the episode "Royal School Fair" is to learn to rule kingdoms. EverRealm Academy.
The premise of the Charmswell School for Royal Magic is... learning magic. A bit similar to Hexley Hall, but for royals. Rich people 🤷♀️
Perhaps a better logic would be to consider Sofia's age and her schooling. When she was 8 to 12 years old, she studied at Royal Prep, and STF ends with her graduation. She was basically in elementary school, right?
Perhaps the school choosen by Sofia and Amber at the "Royal School Fair" episode was the school they were going to study during their middle school years. And Charmswell School for Royal Magic is her high school.
Or Sofia just changed her mind at the last moment because the three fairies said that they could change whenever they wanted so idk
I made two "graphs" to try to illustrate what I mean.
Edit: I'm stupid, I forgot to say that when I mentioned "homeschooled" at the blue part of the illustration I meant "homeschooled DURING pre-school years". I thought that the blue around it spoke for itself, but now I'm not sure if I was being clear enough. Lol
Thanks for reading!

Headcanon: Sofia's Amulet's True Power
What if Sofia's Amulet of Avalor doesn’t just grant her magical abilities but also serves as a reflection of her emotional growth? The more she learns about kindness and bravery, the stronger the amulet becomes. This could explain why she sometimes struggles with magic—it's not just about skill, but also about her heart!

GUYS GUYS!!! Somebody shared this in a StF server I'm in!! Two posts from Craig Gerber himself that all but confirm Cedric is coming back in the new show (including the hashtag in the first one)!!!
We still don't know what role he'll play or if he'll be a main or recurring character, or even if his appearance is just a cameo, but STILL!! EXCITING!!!
As for the mystery fairy from StF, I'm guessing it might be Miss Nettle. Maybe she's a teacher at Charmswell, most likely about magical plants! (And maybe her and Cedric will interact- whoever the fairy is, from the sound of the second post, it sounds like Cedric might interact with her in the same episode! But how neat would it be if Miss Nettle and Cedric interacted again for the first time since 'The Enchanted Feast'?)
GUYS, I AM SQUEALING. CEDRIC!!! IT'S HAPPENING!

knowing Disney they will probably give him a female love interest. I would be surprised if they allowed him to have a male love interest. Also, I also head-canon Cedric to being Bi just like a lot of Cedric fans do.
okay sofia the first time. im excited for the sequel series but im so scared that they'll give cedric a female love intrest or something. it's gonna feel SO forced because that man is gay beyond belief. also i wanna voice act for that show so bad oh my glorp

Once Upon a Princess: a New Sofia.
In the premise of the new Sofia The First Royal Magic series, it is said that Sofia will realize how far ahead of the other students she already is.
We all know how much Sofia is a good person in the original series, and we are familiar with how she is characterized in the original series.
Anyway, the original series takes place over four years, so we follow her from the age of eight to twelve.
If we go by logical reasoning, we can estimate that the new series could then start where the previous series left off. And perhaps even follow the same amount of time as the previous one, now following from twelve to sixteen years of age.
It is at this stage that many experiences, in addition to the social pressure that occurs naturally at this age. So, it is possible that Sofia will also go through new changes in the new series as well.
What I think might happen...
I think maybe some of these changes could be so "drastic", could be interpreted as out of character and even be received with disdain by most fans. Because it's possible that she's not the "sweet little girl" she used to be, and that after her adventures, she's acquired a certain "ego" about her own abilities.
For example:
She may find that subjects that she would have found easy, are much more difficult than she thought, and that she may start to have difficulties in her studies and problems with new teachers.
She may also end up meeting other schoolmates who are not interested in having her around, much less making friends with her. And there's nothing she can do to make them change their view of her.
And because she faced many dangers and made many difficult decisions on her own, it is possible that she developed a certain reluctance to obey authorities, including the the staff of the magic school for royalty.
