When I say I am not waiting for revolution, I mean Im planting things secretly at bus stops, and shoveling snow out of the way of crosswalks. I mean it in a way where neighbors are stocking community fridges and harvesting in community gardens. Little libraries and strangers giving you shoes bc they couldnt return them. I mean ppl swapping stuff or loaning it out to neighbors theyve just met. I mean it in a way where a friend who can sew asks me to mend something and a week late brings me cookies as thanks. I mean it in the way a friend makes a playlist for you and it truly brighten your day. These tiny acts of defiance against cruelty and profit are their own  revolutions. And they catch like kindling, small going at first you might not even know that flames there. Than suddenly all at once catching, burning in the darkness of the night.

“How do you plan on pursing social work practice..”

Four simple questions on the screen. Twelve days between sitting in this chair and pressing send.

Four empty chairs around me. Two illuminated by the sun.

If it were last November, they would be filled with chattering faces. Bright smiles. Urging me to write, setting my phone to the side so I don’t stress read old books I’ve memorized. We would be counting the days until the deadline together. Hushed whispers would be thrown over my ears about my coming birthday. Maybe another surprise party under the stars.

I blink. I’m here. The chairs are still empty. My newest draft blank. My leg reeking of the hot americano I spilled.

I once saw a beautiful quote that detailed all the things they loved to do alone. Reading books, going on walks. Yet at the end, the writer stated:

“But I don’t fancy being alone.”

Here, trying to urge beloved characters to speak louder than the silence of this study room, I understand. I feel it, in my bones. Alone.

Today I started my first day as a social work intern at a school I taught at last year.

I thought a moment about doing macro social work and trying to make big societal change but after today, I know that is not so.

One of my students from last year, started crying when she saw me. Both out of excitement but because she realized there was so much that she had to tell me and that it was a reality.

I love her so much. She talked about how her mom never asks how she is doing or who her friends are. Then is shocked and angry when she does not want to pretend like they have a relationship. I remmeber that.

She set clear boundaries with her mother via text and said she only wants to talk in therapy and that they need a break from talking to one another. She had not been living with her for a long time and hasnt for much of her life.

She is so kind, level headed, and she is going to change the world. She spoke at city hall once about treating drug abuse and laws around getting your family help.

She does all this despite the lack of support. She has manners when she wasn't taught them. It is her character.

To be older, looking back at a frustration that I once felt and felt alone in... it is healing on many levels to be here for her now.

This one interactions, few of many powerful reuniting conversations, has reminded me the energy I feel when I hear other peoples stories. Stories that need to be told desperately.
