SNOW FLOWER AND THE SECRET FAN by Lisa See
RELEASE DATE: July 1, 2005
A nuanced exploration of women’s friendship and women’s writing in a remote corner of Imperial China. At the end of her life, Lady Lily Lu, the 80-year-old matriarch of Tongkou village, sits down to write her final memoir—one that will be burned at her death. Using nu shu, a secret script designed and kept by women, Lily spends her final years recounting her training as a woman, her longing for love and the central friendship of her life. Born, in 1823, into an ordinary farming family, Lily might not have ended up as a wealthy matriarch.
Her earliest memories are of running through the fields outside with her cousin Beautiful Moon in the last days before her foot-binding. But in childhood, Lily’s middle-class fate changed dramatically when the local diviner suggested that her well-formed feet made her eligible for a high-status marriage and for a special ceremonial friendship with a laotong (sworn bosom friend). Accordingly, Lily became laotong with Snow Flower, a charming girl from an upper-class household. Together, the two begin a friendship and intimate nu shu correspondence that develops with them through years of house training, marriages, childbirths and changes in social status. See (Dragon Bones, 2003, etc.) is fascinated by imagining how women with constrained existences might have found solace—and poetry—within the unexpected, little known writing form that is nu shu. Occasionally, in the midst of notes about childbirth and marriages, Lily and Snow Flower wonder how to understand the value of their secret writing in relation to the men’s “outside world.” The question is left delicately open. As the Taiping Rebellion (1851-64) approaches the villages around them, threatening to disrupt the social order, Lily and Snow Flower’s private intimacy changes, stretches and is strained. Taut and vibrant, the story offers a delicately painted view of a sequestered world and provides a richly textured account of how women might understand their own lives.
A keenly imagined journey into the women’s quarters.

This book tells an incredible story of how women can shape history, even at the most seemingly impossible times.
I love this author! I've read Snowflower and the Secret Fan, also by Lisa See, and this author's words and the pictures painted into my mind have never left me. This book is of the same ilk. Something to be read slowly so one can take in and understand all these different angles the author writes on. Lady Tan's Circle of Women is not just about a woman doctor during the mid 1400's to the early/mid 1500's of China, but this woman's detailed lifetime full of experiences that can be related to today even.
This book is indeed about a circle, the circle of women friends, and family that is so important, the circle of life itself and its ups and downs from youth to old age. After reading this book, I feel like Lady Tan's experiences will stay in my mind for a long time.
I can not recommend this historical fiction enough!
Out June 6, 2023!
Thank you, Netgalley and Publisher, for this Arc!

an incomplete out of order list of the times I got in trouble at school as a minor:
in middle school my friend slapped me while playing and i yelled "fuck shit" in front of the vice principal. he made me pick up litter behind the school with another kid. she was awesome, we had fun.
same guy was like "why do u have 69 written on your arm?" "that is the symbol for cancer, I like Homestuck."
calling things gay when theyre literally gay: all quiet on the western front, Snowflower and the secret fan, da Vinci, etc.
wearing a hat while inside.

I wanted to include green since I had so many green books on my shelves. Mint or lighter green is a pretty popular book cover color for YA lit too I’ve noticed.
Green is the color I’ve chosen for Saturday! Happy reading everyone! :)

shoutout to my elderly 9th grade english teacher who assigned my insecure teenage ass to read and then present in front of my all girls class on the lesbian sex chapter of snowflower and the secret fan. it was super traumatic and humiliating at the time since i was trying to give off megahet energy due to being terrified i might be gay (spoiler alert lmfao) but after finding out she’s married to a woman i realize in retrospect that that bitch knew exactly what she was doing and tbh i appreciate that terribly misguided method of trying to make me feel normal and seen.

Books:
- A book that makes you feel good / happy
- A book that makes melancholic / sad
- A book that makes you laugh
- A book that makes you feel romantic
- A book that evokes nostalgia
- A book that you have watched more than any other
- A book that you used to love, but now you don't, and why
- A book that makes you feel good/happy.
As a general rule, I don’t like to purchase books with the intentions to become miserable from them. Anything that does manage to upset me (Twilight, ahem) I will promptly seize and desist from my shelves. I feel that every single book I presently own makes me happy in it’s own way.
I do not even know where to begin to direct my attention, but I own so many great works by so many talented authors: ie. J.R.R. Tolkien, Oscar Wilde, Neil Gaiman, H.P. Lovecraft, Beatrice Potter, Anne Rice, H.G. Wells, Edgar Allan Poe, Tad Williams, Terry Goodkind, Lewis Carroll, L. Frank Baum, Philip Pullman, Alexandre Dumas, Thomas Hardy, James Baldwin, etc.
- A book that makes you feel melancholic/sad.
Snowflower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See.
Beautifully eloquent, but it had me crying by the third chapter.
It broke my heart.
- A book that makes you laugh.
Tumblr media
Here are some lines from the book for context:
Tumblr media
As if Kylo Ren needed a reason to appear more dramatic than he already is.
- A book that makes you feel romantic.
A few books do this strongly for me, especially:
Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert
Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
Phantom Of The Opera by Gaston Leroux
Complete Poems of John Keats
A book that evokes nostalgia.
Crown Duel and it’s sequel Court Duel by Sherwood Smith. I was thirteen when I first read these books. I have yet to discover another literary work that reaches their level of energy and passion. It’s romance is enigmatic and alluring. They will always be pure magic and escapism for me.
- A book that you have read more than any other.
 (Note: You said ‘watched’)
Candide by Voltaire. I feel like so much happens in so few pages that you are left going, “what was that about....?” And then, you find yourself going over it again wondering what madness your plunging yourself back into.
I have not learned anything yet by doing so, for the record, except I am being the indulgent fool Voltaire thinks most of society is.
- A book that you used to love, but now you don’t, and why.
I have very complex feelings and opinions about the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer.
I wouldn’t say I “used to love it” so much as I had high hopes it would get better, only to discover it really does not get better.
I was 18 when I read the Twilight series with no prior conceived prejudices regarding it, simply because they didn’t exist for anyone around the time. I was consuming each book immediately as it was being published. And you know what? I’ve never been more disappointed in myself.
I really do not even know where to centralize my disgust first: do I address New Moon’s insulting representation of mental illness by omitting written pages?
There are entire pieces of paper wasted on nothingness. No writing. Depression is not this empty and meaningless. It is more nuanced than what she represents it as.
I remember thinking ‘how much of a selfish individual do you have to be, how absolutely disconnected from reality, to contribute to the waste of trees in this way?’
Or do I dive into the waking nightmare that is all of Breaking Dawn? I really wish I can say I have hallucinated this entire series, but alas...no.
You know a book is awful when it is capable of creating trauma. I could not look at people for days, because I didn’t know how to mentally process it’s finale. It was a highly negative experience for me and taught me a lot about how I value my mind and time.
Now, all criticism aside of Meyer’s Twilight Series and concerns about her intentions, I will be honest that not every piece of her writing is this poor. People can experience growth and recognize a need for improvement. She is not immune to this and with that said....
If you really want to try one of Meyer’s works, I would recommend The Host, instead.
I was 21 when I read it. So a few years passed since Twilight was initially published. Yes, I did give her a second chance despite what I had gone through. Did it make me a big fan? No. But, it was a pleasant enough experience for me to forgive her, somewhat.
It does start off slow and confusing, but begins to improve after four chapters. It’s not terribly original or complex, but at least the plot has some merit.
It’s worlds different and entertaining enough to make you wonder if you are reading the work of another author. Or like I said previously, maybe she realized the need for improvement by the creation of this novel.

Fanfiction Review Except Not Really It's Just Me Rambling on About the Fics In my Bookmarks on AO3
Now it’s time to talk about what is actually my favorite favorite, The Great Empire of HIC
Before we really get into it, I have to mention that my favorite book of all time is a fictional biography of a woman in 17th century china called Snowflower and the Secret Fan. It’s from the perspective of a poor girl who, due to circumstances from fucked up Chinese traditions, result in her having a “Soul Sister” (i cant remember what it’s called in Chinese) with a rich girl of her same age and moves her up the social ladder while simultaneously bringing her friend, Snow flower, down the social ladder. The entire novel is her life from age 6 to her elderly years and it’s a fantastic book, definitely gay and I love it.
This is basically that book, but Solkat. This took me two days to read, and it was worth every second. I cried, and still cry many times when I read this. More focus is put on Karkat for sure, but I am a huge sucker for pining, and mutual pining. I think there’s a lot of comedy in this, I love the other characters in this, I love how it really feels like it’s not just a fanfic, like it’s actual canon or at least what actual canon would have looked like if we had more than just Pesterquest to go off of with a no-sgrub session.
This fic is also really good for tender moments, and for the angst, OH THE ANGST, the heartbreak, the grittiness. Even though Sollux isn’t there a lot of the time, it’s made up for the fact that Karkat just feels so fucking real. You feel his emotions with him. It makes you think “what would I have done in this situation” and then you immediately think “i would’ve fucking told Sollux when we were like 16 and still on Alternia but that’s not my business.”
And you think that because you’re not Karkat. Karkat would’ve kept it secret for decades, would’ve rather suffered than been an inconvenience or cause of pain for someone he loves WHICH BY THE WAY
I remember before I read this fic, i was talking to a good friend of mind about how Karkat would be the equivalent of “gay” on Alternia that. And by that, I mean, that Trolls are usually polyamorous, and that not being polyamorous is weird and not a lot of people vibe with that. Karkat is unique in that he’s monogamous, only wanting one partner at a time rather than multiple partners. He didn’t see anyone else while he had feelings for Sollux, and when Sollux had different quadrants, even ones that we understand as platonic and not necessarily romantic, he still felt jealousy. Thinking about Sollux having fuck buddies makes him uncomfortable and upset.
And when I was having this kind of conversation with my friend, I didn’t fully understand it from a troll perspective. Of course it’s easy to understand from a human perspective, humans are mostly monogamous. What I mean is that I didn’t fully process it. It didn’t sink in. But reading this. That shit stuck. That shit not only stuck, but fused into my very soul and took over like plankton in that episode of spongebob, walking me towards my doom of only ever seeing karkat in this interpretation, even though i LOOOOVE my pitch solkat so MUCH and very frequently indulge in it.
I dunno, i kinda like some of the cliche aspects to some of this. The drunk confessions, the drunk confessions again, I love hearing Karkat’s inner monologue. I love hearing how he bottles everything up and internalizes everything, and I love the inner conflict of a small part of him just screaming “kiss him already” and the larger, traumatized by his life as a mutant part of him squishes it very fast.
The moments before the REAL confession is so so so good.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I LOVE, i ADORE, these lines. These two lines happens pretty close in between each other, and you feel it. Sollux just got done grilling the fuck out of Karkat, who’s basically housebound due to specific circumstances and wrangled a love confession out of Karkat, who immediately afterward, ran away and got arrested basically. I think about that first screenshot a lot. I think about that whole SCENE, a lot. Cause if it were anyone else, Sollux would’ve just dropped it. Motherfucker broke his heart, now they’re dead to him. In the vault of suppressed memories you go, and on with my life away from you.
But it’s Karkat. You can’t throw Karkat in that vault, dude, and you know he’s putting so much energy into trying to get this information out of him BECAUSE there’s still something there. He still feels something and that’s why this means so much to him, the explanation from Karkat, obviously.
And when he finally does come out and say it, it’s so tender in the way it happens. The realization that he’s still so in love with Sollux and there’s not much he can do because he already blew it, and Sollux realizes it too, he realizes that not only did Karkat did what he did because he loveD Sollux, he still loves him in a way that shatters his very being and AH this shit makes me quake.
And in the scenes to follow, we see that love of Sollux that we also saw in the beginning, the way he describes him and admires him from afar and also not that afar. He can’t stand how much he loves him because to him, it means nothing, it’s clinging on to the past and holding him back.
Tumblr media
See this? this is also fan-fucking-tastic. Like im running out of ways to describe how much i just love this writing. Do you see what I mean by the way Karkat thinks and the way he describes things? This level of detail and fine crafting, but for 500k words and you have my idea of heaven and happiness in it’s purest form. I could link ever screenshot of Karkat describe how beautiful he thinks Sollux is but we’d be here for ever.
One more thing, i swear. When the humans, and by that I mean just dirk and roxy, finally come into the picture, it’s also fucking genius. When Karkat discovers the word “love”, it makes me a little misty in the eyes. The entire time they were using troll language, I was feeling a little saddened, cause Sollux only had the word “pity” to describe this positive affection for him. There was no in between or combination that could make it feel right, and we don’t ever really hear or see them call each other anything official cause there is no word for it. There is no word for “boyfriend” that they can just pluck out of the air and use as a quadrant-neutral description of their love, because their love doesn’t really exist outside of the two of the. Do you see what i mean by karkat is “gay” by troll standards, or does that still not make sense to anyone lmao.
Please PLEASE just go read this fic, it’s a work of fucking art

hey, thank you for your previous rec post about chinese media! do u by any chance have any recs for stuff about older chinese history, like the dynasties etc?
hi!! sorry it took so long for me to respond! I had a whole long reply written out and accidentally deleted it all.. so I moped around for a bit before coming back and rewriting it lol
unfortunately, I myself haven’t watched/read anything about older Chinese history, but in class a couple of months ago we learned about the dynasties so I’ve actually been looking for things too! I’ll share some of the stuff I’m interested in watching/reading. sorry I can’t be more helpful, but hopefully something on here catches your eye :)
TV Shows: 1. The Qin Alliance. the second series based on novels by Sun Haohui. it’s a romanticisation (from the Qin) of the events of the Warring States period. 2. King’s War. a drama about the events that took place between the Qin dynasty collapse and the rise of the Han dynasty. 3. Nirvana in Fire. an extremely popular drama based in the 6th century during the feud between the Northern Wei and Southern Liang dynasties. it follows the son of the Liang general and depicts the political drama of the dynasties.
Books: 1. Peony in Love by Lisa See. a true story based on the first book known to be written and published by women. very cool!! describes the difficult love lives on women in 17th century China. Lisa See also wrote one of my favourite books, Snowflower and the Secret Fan. 2. Dream of the Red Chamber by Cao Xueqin. a (likely semi-autobiographical) Chinese literary classic written in the Qing dynasty. it’s considered to be one of (if not the) greatest Chinese novels. it an episodic novel following the fall of an aristocratic family and focuses on the family’s heir. 3. The Book and the Sword by Jin Yong. describes the legend of Emperor Qianlong and a secret society’s aims to overthrow the Qing dynasty and revive the Han. 4. The Moon in the Palace by Weina Dai Randel. depicts the rise of Mei from her role as a concubine to Empress Wu Zetian who was in power from 660-705.
I’m working on making a list of TV shows/movies/books I have watched/read along with synopses and how much I liked them. still trying to figure out how to format it, but I’ll post it when it’s done!
you gave me an idea - maybe I should make a timeline thing of different movies/shows and put them in chronological order? then people could go through them in the order in which they would have happened, or they can pick and choose certain eras to watch? I think I’ll start working on that and hopefully people would be interested!

i am looking for books that are well-written, have a fantasy / historical / apocalypse / sci-fi / dystopian or (my fave) that sort of Supernatural-is-Normal (like, your dentist is a centaur and that’s chill)
Prefer female protagonists, but eh, I can live with others
Cannot be violently heterosexual, you get such good books and they jam in a love interest randomly and you’re like???? where did this person come from???????????? why can you suddenly not even think for yourself??? But if the story is good enough, happy to live with it, lmao.
Recently enjoyed stories such as:
Girls with Sharp Sticks
the Grace Year
Spin the Dawn
All terry pratchett books
Into the Black Land
Circe
Maze Runner
Song of achilles
Girls of Paper and Fire
The Fireman (Joe Hill)
Clan of the Caveman (got up to #3 at this point lmao)
A River of Royal Blood
Torchwood stories
Snowflower & the secret fan
The help
Dragonlance chronicles, etc.
[like, as audiobooks bc lots of travelling for work]
Any thoughts?

Kim Hee Ae’s dramas list
Tumblr media
We all loved Kim Hee Ae’s great and superb performance in the highest rated cable tv drama in South Korea, “The World of the Married” that she even won Best Actress in the recent 56th Baeksang Awards.
Just in case you are a fan of Kim Hee Ae, I have a list of her dramas where she portrayed different characters that will make you fall for her even more.
My top 3 dramas of Kim Hee Ae:
1. Mrs. Cop (2015) 18 episodes.
Kim Hee Ae was well praised for her fashion styles and outfits in the drama The World of the Married. So, don’t put your expectations high because in this drama she’s almost barefaced. Shirt, pants, jacket and sneakers. Hair down. You can’t even tell if Team Leader Choi Young Jin (Kim Hee Ae) is wearing a make-up because she’s always all sweaty from running and catching criminals.
Being a cop always on stake out, her character doesn’t wash up for at least 3 days and she sleeps in the streets, inside the police car of course. Her role is a very active Team Leader of Violent Crimes Division in Seoul and will always want to do things her way. Well, she’s actually right about them though,
You may find her personality very strong, and aggressive. In all the dramas I’ve watched, one thing seemed to be consistent about her. That she’s a badass. But she is still a sweet mother and sister. Extrasensory Choi always look out for the people around her, those who are dear to her.
Her acting is on point. I didn’t imagine her doing this role considering her age but as what she has said in an interview, she wanted to try different roles and be a versatile actress.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
  2. Second To Last Love (2016) 20 episodes.
In this drama, she portrayed Producer Kang Min Joo in her 40s, living as an independent woman and still living the single-hood life. When she felt like she’s already losing touch in doing her work, she decided to live outside of the city to get a breath of fresh air.
You will laugh, cry and fall in love with her. She’s a sassy, straightforward but kindhearted person.
Considered as their broadcasting company’s superwoman, she has been a career-driven woman after she lost her fiancé in a (spoiler alert) fire and that is also where her fate with Ko Sang Sik started. After so many years, they’ve finally met and they are bound to unfold their destiny.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. Secret Love Affair (2014) 16 episodes.
Oh Hye Won (Kim Hee Ae) is a piano teacher to a talented pianist where she fell in love and had an affair with. Her lover was 20 years younger than her.
The drama became controversial because of its different approach to extramarital affair.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. A Wife’s Credentials
Tumblr media
5. Midas
6. My Husband’s Woman
7. Snowflower
