Smaugust Day 26: Colossus
I’ve met very few bold enough to try and tame a dragon, much less the utter madness I witnessed when I visited the city of Wildeback. In order to avoid the harsh monsters below, they seem to have tamed and built their settlement on the back of a truly massive beast of a dragon. It seems to be one of a kind, and the towns folk were not very keen in sharing their process. I’ll have to further investigate another time.

🌒Bad Moon Rising🌘
Finally! This piece took me a while, and involved a lot more photoshop than I originally hoped, but it done! I’m glad I was able to get at least one Smaugust piece done. This piece is on the page behind that crow piece I did last October. It left a half-moon red stain on the page, and I’ve been wanting to do a piece utilizing it in some way. Initially it was going to be something with werewolves, but smaugust rolled around and i settled on this :) I start school again in a couple of weeks, but this semester’s schedule isn’t too tough, so I plan on carving out time for art still! :D
[ID: Ink illustration of a line art, scaled dragon with a long, serpentine body and two sets of small wings where the legs would be. It’s head looks left, and it’s body twists over its left down the page. It has tendrils for horns, a plated spine, and a gold outline. The background is mostly white, but the dragon intersects with a rectangle with a gold outline filled with a night sky that starts red and fades into a reddish purple then white at the bottom. The gold outline does not extend to the bottom line, which is a jagged gradient. The dragon looks up at a red crescent moon that emits light. Stars are also on the night sky. The illustration is in a leather bound sketchbook that sits on a bed of moss.
Image 2: Ink illustration of a line art, scaled dragon with a long, serpentine body and two sets of small wings where the legs would be. Image 3: Cropped illustration of a line art, scaled dragon on a ink background. The crop includes half of the moon, some of the white background, the head, and one wing of the dragon. Part of the neck and tendrils are cropped.
Image 4: Crop of the illustration that showcases the dragon’s body, tail, and other wing. The crop cuts out the red portions of the ink background, the bottom right wing, and the left portion of the canvas.
Image 5: Photo of two partially empty sketchbook pages, the left one having bled marker, and the right page having partially bled marker and faint sketch lines. The bled marker on the left shows the outline of a crow, and two circles, a large red one in the crow’s beak. The right page has bled marker from the smaller red circle. The background is black. /end ID]

On stormy days and rain-soaked nights, where songs are sung, a maiden's plights, a little town of woe and fear, a sacrifice of one most dear.
They must appease the one above, they say, and tie the one they love to stake and stay her on the hill: For beast to find, do what he will.
When they returned in morning's light, the maiden was no more in sight. They sighed and sang a song most dire, the stake thrown on the fun'ral pyre
The town was right, the beast was cruel; over the land, he wished to rule. With iron tail and glinting teeth and icy winds he gave them grief.
Mere pleasure was the maiden's fate, his hunger she would never sate. An appetizer, she would be; the land would fade from history.
But she was not to be his vice. Her wisdom great, she rolled the dice, appealed did she with beast so fierce; her words, so pure, his heart did pierce.
She saw in him a fire so deep, and she knew that she could keep it locked away, and tempered dim; she could save the world from him.
Is he still the beast so cruel? Our maiden just a death-scared fool? Our questions, they will never quell, but this is what this tale will tell...
The maiden pure, the land's great bane; the world has ne'er seen both again. While up above, twixt skin and scale- ...My friend, that's for another tale.

Yet anout Smaugust post! Today, @pencilcat's prompts say 'Long', and I couldn't choose any different from this piece from 2022. I really wanted to get the vibe of those classic pieces in new age shops of dragons and maidens, and I'm really pleased with how it came out in the end!

Kitty Smaugust 2023
First off, I need to say that this is NOT the request post; that will be linked down below. Rather, this is the post to say in greater detail what all this art event is doing, so I don't need to put a huge wall of text on the posts for each day.
Kitty Smaugust is an art event I did in 2022, and I'm doing it again in 2023. I'm drawing cats as dragons, because cats are cute and dragons are cool, and I'm using a prompt list to guide that, because it makes things easier for me with how my brain works. (The prompts are copied out down below, but if you'd like the post with just the prompts, you can find it here.)
The normal system for my pet art events applies here. To make a request, you reblog the proper post (to repeat, NOT this post) with a photo of the critter you want me to draw. Include the critter's name in the body of the post. Once I've drawn your critter, I'll reblog your post and add in my artwork. For this particular event, it's one request per person per prompt, unless explicitly stated otherwise; that means that you can get up to 31 different pictures of your cat as a dragon (and I am perfectly okay with that happening, so you don't need to worry about it).
For each day in August, I will be making a post, with that day's prompt in the title; cats will be dragonified in ways inspired by that prompt. (If you want a future prompt, the list clearly states what day that will be on; if you want a past prompt, I might be able to mesh that with the current day's prompt.) There will be 31 different base posts by the end of the month, one for each day and prompt. You can make a request on a post so long as it's still that day somewhere in the world, because I don't want to worry about timezones.
To clarify "your cat", this can be a past or present or future cat, or the cat of a friend or relative, or a cat you sometimes visit at the local shelter; the important thing is that it's a cat you have some kind of connection to, and a cat you know the name of. (Also doesn't necessarily need to actually be a cat, so long as you can give me reasons why the creature is actually a cat despite appearances.)
If there are further questions, or I think of something else, I'll add to this as necessary.
Here's the collection of my favourite pieces from the (first) (middle) (final) third of the event.
Now, the prompts. Once each post has been made, it will be linked here.

So, remember my old Sunny as the nightwing animus au? Well this is a late continuation of that. This is Sunny's second ever meeting with Starflight, after the Nightwings kidnap him to the volcano island.
As a bonus, here's a funny, non-canon idea for a Sunny design:
This is the spiritual predecessor of this piece, there's not much to this au, really. There's only a couple plot points here and there.

Smaugust Day 28: Temporal
From what I can gather from ancient writings, the Timekeeper Greatwyrm is a legendary dragon with the ability to jump across time. Some say it carries time itself on his back. Some say its roars rip open portals to the past or future. Regardless of the legends, I believe there are too many similar descriptions across too wide a variety of cultures to write this magnificent beast as mere myth.

Day one of Smaugust is Dragon of Joy. A simple design for the first dragon of the month. Continuing my theme from last year with making these little logs from an explorer charting the various dragon species around the world.

It's always cold down here, a clammy dampness that gets through your shirt and freezes your skin. Pushing through the thorns and dense, broad leaves of the brushes only serves to soak through your pants and sandalled feet.
Still, 'least you won't go thirsty here. If you feel confident enough to trust this water, that is. Who knows what's leaking out of this place? You can't quite identify what it used to be. If it was a power plant, then, that's some bad juju. Strip mall? Nah. You don't have that kinda luck... but even if it was, it's not like there'd be anything left at this point. A decade and a half is a long time for anything of value to be still sitting around, rusted and waterlogged or not.
Clang.
You freeze. Ripples spread out from around your feet, trembling the surface of a small lake that covers what used to be a floor. But the sound came from above - the mist-soaked heights are indistinct, crisscrossed by vines and wires, and-
There. Movement.
It's climbing down towards you, a fleshy pink against dull girders. Long, taloned claws click along old metal. You tighten your grip on your staff, the feathers and beads on the end tinkling as your hand shudders.
It stops and tilts its head. You wrap your other hand around the beads, and stare in horror as the creature turns its head.
It... doesn't have eyes. The pale bone of what remains of a skull, but no eyes. No wonder it doesn't seem to have seen you. But that means if you make any more noise...
Scrape, scrape... it stretches its claws out, bringing itself down to eye level. Its long, sinuous body ripples with firm muscles. As it stops, it hangs on with spread thighs. Not it, you can't help but think - she.
A long snout opens beneath that skull, breath not misting in the cold air - and a long, languid tongue unfurls from behind a hundred pointed teeth, tasting the wet scents of the long-lost building. Perhaps searching for you, its intruder...
You stare, steeling your nerves, trying not to tremble even a fraction, trying not to look at the ripples spreading out from your twitching feet.
And all the while, you can't help but stare in fear... and fascination.
What... is she?

Another Smaugust post! Today, @pencilcat's prompts say Skull, and that reminded me of this piece I got to do back in 2022. This creature came to a friend of mine in a dream, and I'm a sucker for things like that. It was so fun to bring her to life in such a way <3

Five Dragons Not Based on Mythology
In my current draft of Dracones Mundi, out of the 40ish (43 to 45) species of dragon, 5 of them are more based on popular culture and cultural depictions moreso than mythology and stories, and these five dragons are:
The Dancing Naga - a long pink dragon who performs twirling, spinning dances through the air, based on 'hey, what if a dragon fruit was named after a dragon?' and on the puppets used at Lunar New Year celebrations.
The Sandwyrm - a large serpentine dragon that lives in the Gobi desert. It's juvenile form is based on mythology and cryptozoology (olgoi-khorkhoi or the Mongolian Death Worm) and I could have just kept this creature as a Mongolian Death Worm but I gave it a very different adult stage of life to tie in with pop culture sandworms like shai hulud from Dune or the graboids from Tremors. Just for fun.
The Grey Wyvern - a species of grey and spiky desert dwelling wyvern found in North America - the reason dragons from movies tend to be grey and spiky wyverns in Dracones Mundi is that the grey wyverns are easy to train and look really cool, so many movie makers green screen them in as terrifying beasts for their films.
The Forest Wyvern - close relative of the Grey Wyvern, this is one of those 'horns look like tree branches, wings look like leaves' dragons that appear in fantasy art. Also, I love animals who look like moss and bark so I wanted a dragon similar to a Madagascan Tree Gecko or mossy frog, a dragon that can just blend in.
The Ice Dragon - another Grey Wyvern relative, but white and spiky instead of grey and spiky. Not decided much about this dragon yet! Just there's a lot of media out there that proposes the inverse of a fire breathing dragon being an icy cold dragon, so I thought I would slide one in. It's not the only Arctic dragon (heck, might put it in the Antarctic) as I do have dragons based on Inuit folklore, although these are aquatic and sleek and don't match the pop-culture 'white spiky icicle dragon'
(image: two dragons, the first is a pale and spiky ice dragon, the second is a brown dragon with green stripes and leaflike wings. These are rough digital doodles with very few details.) Pictured are the 2 newest of the 'totally made up' dragons.
I don't think I've gone too wild with making up dragon varieties: the dancing naga is pretty much a dragon from mythology which isn't specifically named in folklore (just a pink dragon from East and Southeast Asia), the sandwyrm is loosely based on olgoi-khorkhoi and if the adult form doesn't vibe well I can shave it back to being olgoi-khorkhoi with no pop-culture references, and the three wyverns are based on strong visual motifs in modern fantasy.
I do worry that putting non-mythology dragons in the project will somehow make it less cool: I know I get annoyed when other dragon books insert pop-culture dragons in place of actual mythology, but these dragons are definitely in addition to a huge roster of mythological dragons, rather than replacing them. I may get rid of these dragons, but for now they fill up the map nicely :3

My friend @i-draws-dinosaurs donated £3 to my KoFi in the month of Smaugust which means, of course, they got a Smaugust dragon!
Being a fellow palaeontologist, this is once again a prehistoric critter themed dragon, based on their amazing speculatively evolved temnospondyl dragon designs, which I wholeheartedly love. When I got the request to draw this I was like YES! I LOVE YOUR DRAGON DESIGNS! Here is the post with Tas's temnospondyl dragons. I was encouraged to go nuts with the colour design, so I of course gave the dragon eye spots and a nice firebellied-toad-inspired scheme.
During Smaugust (dragon-August) any £3 donation to my KoFi (link here) allows you to ask me to draw any dragon. This runs out soon as September draws near, but I will have commissions open for the rest of the year (a little more pricey!)

Happy Dracones Monday everyone!
This dragon is the grey wyvern, found in desert and rocky areas of North America. Due to this animal being small and easy to train, they are actor animals for many Hollywood films, hence the grey and spiky appearance of most movie dragons.
For more Dracones Mondays ('dragons of mondays') consider following @draconesmundi ('dragons of the world')!

My #1 post of 2022
In the world of Dracones Mundi, dragons are real, so things named for being dragonlike must logically resemble a 'real' dragon - so dragonfruit being pink with green-edged scales meant I designed a pink dragon with green edged scales
Currently I'm looking at dragon-headed caterpillars, wondering if we need a dragon with 4 long tapering horns. Bonus, the juvenile form might have nubs instead of horns and resemble certain famous media dragons (night furies from HTTYD films, or in general cutesy blunt-snouted dragons). Would a dragon like this be a good idea? No idea which country it would live in, but it might be a herbivorous dragon due to head shape... possibly maybe a small newtlike dragon, omnivorous pond dweller or something?
