"I don't want to answer a string of questions while I am eating. I want to think!" "Good heavens! At breakfast?" Have I mentioned that I love Frodo and Pippin—
Frodo sees his kid cousin running in the grass and singing and thinks to himself "🥺 oh I can't possibly take him and Sam into danger with me, look at them"
I love Frodo's entire conversation with Sam here. If I tried to list my favorite lines, I'd be copying the whole thing. Frodo doesn't want to put Sam in danger, because he loves him, but Sam is extremely loyal and willing to walk into hellfire for Frodo, because he loves him. It's just such a sweet exchange that tells you so much about these characters. I'm love them boys.
Also Frodo being surprised that Sam's become so philosophical haha
Frodo: "We'd best get going; we slept late." Pippin: "You mean you slept late." HAVE I MENTIONED—
Frodo: "I'm not going to take the road. I'll cut straight across country to the Ferry." Pippin: "What, can you fly??"
Pippin: "Short cuts make long delays! Besides, I was hoping to stop at the inn for some good beer." Frodo: "Well, that settles it! Short cuts make long delays, but inns make longer ones."
Also Sam stalwartly like "I'll go with you, Mr. Frodo," but also inwardly like ":-C but the beer tho"
And now we return to another hiking section, about which I have very little to say except that Tolkien's description of the natural environments of the Shire is extremely beautiful and I too would want to hike there
And now we interrupt your regularly scheduled pleasant hike for some bone-chilling horror
It's hard to imagine in the modern age—when tornado sirens and jet planes and faulty car brakes all probably make noises not unlike that of a Ringwraith's call—but to hobbits who have never heard a noise louder or more frightening than a thunderclap, a high, sustained, almost industrial screech like this must seem like the most terrifying and otherworldly thing.
(Also nobody tell Pippin about the white bellbird, which has a call like the emergency alert system at a volume comparable to a pneumatic drill)

It's such a shame that we know so little of Frodo's childhood, but the fact that he was a Certified Scoundrel(TM) who was prone to stealing mushrooms and got his butt whooped over it is absolutely hilarious 🤣 How ever did a naughty kid like him become the erudite sweetheart we know and love??
Pippin like "chill bro, he's a mutual friend of mine and Merry's, we're good!" Meanwhile Frodo is sweating buckets LOL
It's so cool that Pippin gets to be the leader in this section. And what a fearless leader he is! Of course he's not in any danger at all, but it just says so much about him that he waltzes down the lane to Farmer Maggot's house without a care in the world while Frodo and Sam are both terrified 🤣
Also I adore Farmer Maggot's hospitality
Sam giving Farmer Maggot the side eye because he whooped Frodo over the mushrooms years ago X-D
"I recollect the time when young Frodo Baggins was one of the worst young rascals of Buckland." I MEAN JUST IMAGINE
Farmer Maggot's story about the Ringwraith is SO GOOD. I love how much courage this round old hobbit has in him.

Also Farmer Maggot cheerfully being like "don't worry, if they come after ya again, I'll deal with 'em for ya!" is so sweet and so ballsy X-D
Also Farmer Maggot is SO FREAKING SMART, and so generous. I think it's Merry who says later that he's got a lot more going on in his head than his genial appearance might let on, and he's right. He can see that Frodo and co. are in trouble, and he immediately offers his help. What a solid dude.
And here we see Frodo's silver tongue at work once again!
"I've been in terror of you and your dogs for over thirty years... It's a pity: for I've missed a good friend."
This line actually made me stop and think, bruh. How many friendships do we miss out on because we let the mistakes of our younger selves dictate our future?? I can think of lots of dumb things I did as a kid, and I'd be so embarrassed to run into the people that I wronged in my stupidity...but who knows? Maybe they're good people. Maybe they'd even be my best friends, if I got over myself. Food for thought.
And speaking of food, I want to have dinner with Farmer Maggot and his family and farm hands X-D

oh god if i hash the whole thing out i'll be here all day so here are some bullet points
rumfitt tries to riff a number of 'haunted house' horror writers, most prominently shirley jackson, only she's less riffing shirley jackson as much as she's riffing a version of shirley jackson that she made up in her head
it is so heavyhanded. on every other page rumfitt tells you what she's doing, and what it all Means, and what the big Statement of the moment is, and it's just---it sucks any interest out of the text for me. it is an incredibly condescending book.
& for a book that's so condescending it is not especially smart lol. it tries very hard to say something about fascism but just kind of sputters & stumbles around some v unwieldy swings at the culture war and anxiety about "complicity," "cancel culture," "oppression olympics." there's a passage which tries in completely seriousness to talk about the "oppression calculator" as though rumfitt is the first person ever to think that such a framework might be reductive and it's just like, at that point you cannot expect me to take your politics seriously!
neither of her protagonists are especially memorable or distinct because they are metonyms for social positions; this could be fine if those metonyms were put to any compelling use. They are not
there's really just ... nothing to it save for stringing together some references to other, better writers and making a statement About Fascism on every other page. the narrative is v pneumatic. and, like, i don't need "eventful" narratives necessarily, but if your book is staking its success on being politically compelling & on being a productive riff on the writers you crib to such an extent that you have a v flimsy narrative and v flimsy characters because those are only needed as vehicles for those components, then those components need to ... succeed. and, like, they don't.
it's, sorry, it's a book for corbynites who think they understand the relationship between british terfism and fascism, and that they're the first people ever to see it.
it's a shame, because there are some glimpses in there of a much stronger book. alison rumfitt does at times have a pretty strong prose voice (at other times ... not so much. but in her more experimental moments she often sticks the landing and it's more compelling work than a less ambitious prose voice would manage.) and, like, she can write legitimately unsettling horror, moreso than a lot that i've read! unfortunately those glimpses are few and far between compared to ... the rest, lol.

Fictober Day 23: "we can fix this, I know we can"
That '70s Show Fanfiction
Red should'be known better than recruiting the kettlehead to help with his project. Rigging a pneumatic device to open his Toyota's hood "will be a piece of cake," Kelso said. "I can even make it roar." But now they were in Red's garage with a car whose hood belched smoke and refused to open.
"We can fix this. I know we can," Kelso said and disconnected the pneumatic pump from the Toyota. "It'll just take some thinking."
Great. Kelso needed to think. That had never gone well.
But he pulled on his safety latex gloves, pried open the hood, and waved away the smoke. "Well, here's your problem." He plucked out a chunk of dry ice from the car. "How'd this get in here?"
Red was glad he'd chosen to wear a turtleneck sweater. He was flushing, and his neck often gave him away. "Squirrels."
"Squirrels?"
"Wisconsin Autumn squirrels. Don't tell me you've never heard of them." Red cleared his throat. "Their paws are immune to cold temperatures."
Kelso placed the dry ice in a corner of the garage. "Where would they get this from, though?"
"Trees. Stored ... oh, hell. I did it. Wanted to test if it would work."
"Oh, it worked. It froze your car and the pneumatic pump." Kelso laughed and pointed at him. "Whose the kettlehead now? Burn!"
Red was burning. He'd take off his sweater if it wouldn't reveal his embarrassment. He wasn't that old. He hadn't become senile, but he his former, childless impulsivity influenced him once in a while.
"The damage doesn't look too bad. Let everything air out. Pour hot water over the dry ice in the backyard. After dinner, we should be good to go."
"I didn't mean to keep you from your family this long on a Monday night." Red's voice was gravelly. He'd finally quit seeing Kelso as that teenager who'd glued himself to Red's fridge. Or as the idiot he'd locked in this very garage for dating his daughter. He still had the monkey wrench he'd used as an unspoken threat. "When did you get a brain?"
Kelso sat on a work stool. "1985, I think. When I graduated from technical school."
Red laughed quietly. Kelso needed to have a brain to go to technical school at all. The glimmer of his genius with computers first showed itself way back in 1976, Christmas Eve. "I'm glad you grew up, son.'
He clasped Kelso's shoulder, and Kelso leapt off the stool like Red had thrown the first punch in a boxing match.
"For Pete's sake, I'm not gonna hit you. I'm complimenting you."
"Sorry. I'm not used to that ... from you."
"And I'm not used to you having common sense."
Kelso smiled and waved dismissively. "Oh, don't worry about that. I don't have a lot."
He seemed to believe that trait was a good thing, but Red didn't argue. He followed Kelso, who carried the dry ice, into the backyard. Kelso left the dry ice there, where white smoke rose from it.
"We should probably take care of that before we eat," Kelso said. "But totally use dry ice during your Halloween party out here. Just not in your car."
"Yeah. Got it."
They entered the house through the patio door. Kitty was busy cooking dinner in the kitchen, and Red kissed her on the cheek. Then he filled a large pot with hot water. Kelso helped him carry it to the backyard.
"Look away while we dump this thing," Red said. "Should've worn my safety goggles."
"We still can. Let's put this down on the grass."
They did as Kelso said, placed the pot of water on the ground and went to Red's garage. Red found two pairs of his safety goggles and passed one to Kelso.
"What's it like raising two kids?"
Red's hands froze on his safety goggles' elastic strap. "We'll talk about it at dinner."
"Cool."
Together, they returned to the backyard and melted the dry ice. Within the hiss and smoke, Red marveled at how much could change in ten years. Two of his kids were going to give him grandkids. Kettlehead had become smart -- smarter -- and wiser. And Red no longer viewed life as a misery to get through until the peace of death. He enjoyed simple pleasures, like creating a monster car for Halloween, and he had a hell of a lot more to look forward to.
Better to start life at a low point, survive two wars, a recession that could've cost his family their house, and suffer a moderate heart attack and end up here, now, in his mid-sixties as a happy and healthy man than start off well and lose every hope, every joy.
He wouldn't change any of it, except for selling his Corvette. For a pregnancy that wasn't a pregnancy but his wife's menopause. But a man couldn't have everything.

Starfinder Character Concept: Vercite Ice Trucker
Because I saw an image of a research ship stuck in arctic ice, this island of yellow light amidst black water and white ice, and it reminded me that I love Verces, Starfinder’s tidally locked Pact World whose dark side is an icy industrial hellscape. And I still want my ice trucker, since Xalke turned out more of a stationary industrial worker out on one of the ice rigs. I want a tough little hover trucker making deliveries to the industrial platforms out on the endless midnight ice.
I did want to build this around trucking. Vehicles. The Piloting skill and the Ace Pilot theme. And that suggested a Dex build, so, you know. Let’s go Operative. For fun points, Operative actually has a Driver specialisation, so yeah. That fits nicely. And then I just had to decide her race, and …
Did you know Space Goblins get racial bonuses to Engineering, Survival and Stealth? Because they’re tough, scrappy little buggers who are used to roughing it out in the holes and garbage pits where other species are disinclined to venture. And, like. Who takes a shitty job that nobody wants, driving out alone onto vast icy hellscapes where no one wants to be? A goblin, is who.
I did, mind you, also consider a dwarf. Because dwarves just feel like science fantasy truckers. But I think goblin wins here.

Starfinder goblins are stowaways and scavengers and clever little buggers who eked out a whole civilisation for themselves in the maintenance ducts and mechanised bowels of other species’ homes. They’re tough, smart, tenacious little buggers, and they go where they’re not wanted, and they stubbornly survive regardless. Not even necessarily out of spite, but just because what? This is liveable. Y’all don’t like it down here? I love them. Them and ysoki fill a particular niche for me.
And I do like the Scrounger feat for an ice trucker. Bonuses to Engineering, Stealth and Survival. What better set of skills to get bonuses to when you’re piloting a lonely vehicle out over monster-infested ice sheets? If your truck breaks down out there, you’ve got the skills you need to stay hidden, stay alive, and get it moving again.
Granted, goblins aren’t naturally found on Verces. Absalom and the Diaspora are more their sort of haunt. For a start, they don’t have any form of cold resistance, and Verces’ Darkside is fucking cold. But. That’s what technology is for. And goblins hitched rides on ships (not always with the ship’s knowledge) and wound up pretty much everywhere, so this tough little goblin wound up on Verces, and there were shady companies offering money for shitty, dangerous work, and you know what? She can do that. Don’t even worry about it.
Description:
The heavy door of the truck popped open with a pneumatic hiss, and out of the reasonably large opening a surprisingly tiny bundle of armour and snow suit hopped down onto the ice, clicking its heels together to deploy the ice spikes in its boots. A surprisingly well-tended laser pistol jostled for position with a collection of tools on a grubby belt as the figure turned, a gleam of scowling red eyes the only visible feature under the weather gear. Even that was abruptly obscured, however, along with pretty much everything else, when the creature activated the light projector in the armour and blinded everyone in a fifty foot radius.
“Well?” a surprisingly high, growly voice asked, hands on hips while they all blinked the dazzle out of their eyes. “What are you all waiting for? Shit’s not going to unload itself!”
(Notes: among her equipment I’m giving her Frosthiker Soles, because ice sheets, and the Light Projector armour upgrade, because midnight ice sheets. She’s a one-woman floodlight. Also, obviously, Environmental Clothing (cold climates) and an Engineering Kit. I’m not fully sure how to go about functionally equipping a Starfinder Character, beyond armour, weapons and ammo, but I figured I’d throw in a few bits for flavour).
Theme: Ace Pilot
Trucker! Ice trucker! Also goblin, so she just likes vehicles. Mostly self-taught regarding how they work and how to drive them, there may or may not have been a large amount of dismantling wrecked (or not-so-wrecked, at least before she got her hands on them) vehicles in her youth, but she just likes mobile machinery. And the bigger the better, so a good solid slab of a truck is quite appreciated. Might make climbing in and out of cabs a little tricky at 3ft tall, but don’t worry about it. She’ll make it work.
Class: Operative (Driver Specialisation)
I love the description of Driver subclass. “Your lightning reflexes and cool-headed judgment are without equal when you’re behind the wheel.” It feels somewhat geared towards getaway driving, which you might not think makes too much sense for an industrial ice trucker, but do you know what’s out there on the Vercite ice sheets? Trust me. A good (read: living) ice trucker knows when to get shit in gear real quick. Heh. Operatives also have several exploits that double down on the vehicle thing, but that might be overkill. I just wanted her to feel like a trucker first and foremost. A professional driver.
That operatives are also skill monkeys and potential snipers is also not a problem. There are a lot of problems out on Verces’ ice sheets that are best solved with a nice sniper rifle from a comfortable distance away. Like from the nice warm cab of a hover truck, for example. Heh. Not that I think I’d be starting her with a sniper rifle or anything. Probably small arms. But she would vibe with the sniper ethos, for sure. Quick, quiet, and preferably a long way away, that’s how we roll.
Summary:
Verces is just really pretty? In a bleak, industrial, horrifying sort of way? It might be my second favourite Pact World after the Diaspora, although Liavara and the Sun are also in the running there. I just really vibe with the midnight icy and the floodlit industrial platform aesthetic of Darkside. And I know I already did Xalke, another Darksider, but she was stationary, an industrial station worker, and I wanted to go back to the ice trucker idea, the lone traveller out on the ice, doing a shitty job in a scary place. And you just. You gotta love goblins? They’re tough, they’re scrappy, they’re willing to wade through shit, they’re a lot smarter than you think. I deeply enjoy them.
Verces also just warps people, I think. Like Xalke, I want Girta’s first feat to be the Toughness feat. Darkside is about survival. Industry, horror, and survival. So a goblin really does fit. Engineering, Stealth and Survival. The perfect trifecta of Darksider skills. Heh.
So. Have a frozen bundle of goblin grit bombing cheerfully along in a hover truck across the midnight, monstrous ice sheets? Girta Highhand, a goblin Vercite ice trucker!

Lasers and Robots, a Child's Two Greatest Loves: Analyzing Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future (Part 2: Episode 1 "Shattered")
We open with "Scout", well, scouting a Bio-Dread fort (or maybe an outpost. I'm not well versed in post-Metal Wars infrastructure). It looks cool regardless. I like the battlement-looking stuff on the walls. It's like the robots are fighting orcs or something. The spiky radio antenna too. Awesome.
Some robots leave the fort. Did they see Scout? A routine pat rol? Scout stabs a Bio-Dread with a pointy and it overreacts before Scout casts an illusion on himself to look like a Bio-Dread. Somehow the other five robots don't notice this. Seriously? Yeah, he's got a decent mask on, but they're robots, don't they have a computer monitoring their status? Why was one of them set to patrol just around the corner? Did one of the other robots patrol the other corner? Why does their fort have these giant blind spots at its main entrance? Do they have cameras?
I like how Scout pushes the button in one pose, and finishes his transformation in a second pose. In my head his hologram whatever is off by a few inches so most of his body is actually 'grammed to look invisible.

Once inside, Scout immediately undoes his cloak. This will likely turn out to be a bad idea. We get a few shots of the inside, it's a neat industrial set. Lots of pipes and steam and stuff. Scout sets a bomb, and gets found out by the robots. A very good instance of the "two guys shoot you so you duck and they hit each other" trope happens here, I'll let it speak for itself.

Speaking of the robots, they have a neat aesthetic. We see that those two were in some sort of charging mode, so they are robots. The segmented visor is cool, and I like the tubes connecting the head to the chest. Probably pneumatics that make a good 'hiss' whenever it moves. Or oxygen tubes for the human head in there. idk, I'm not Lord Dread, leader of the Bio-Dread Empire. Their chest (and a number of background objects) has this obnoxious red flashing light. The flashing is used during the toy sequences so the toys know when to add points or take damage. So, making them the villain's aesthetic is a smart move that makes the toy sequence less obvious, but it's still a little painful on the eyes. The problem is that the light is digital, which makes it look like a glow from another reality. This makes it stand out more as a special effect rather than an aesthetic choice.
Scout runs out of the building, continuing to shoot at nothing. His lasers are green. Bad guy lasers are purple. This is a subtle nod to Power's team being underequipped rebels as green light is at a lower wavelength (and thus energy level) than purple.
Power spends six of his thirty seconds telling Hawk and Tank to "shoot the bad guys."
Wait, their lasers are blue! That's better than green, but lower than purple. Guess that's why Scout is the scout of the group, he's got the weakest gun. He hasn't shot anyone yet, but I suspect his gun to take a Bio-Dread out in one shot too.
I do appreciate the use of actual spark effects on the robots. Seeing the explosion reflected in their 360p is a nice little detail.

And Tank's laser is green!? That's as strong as Scout's! To be fair, he is called 'Tank' and not 'Gun,' but damn, they really gave him the worst gun. Biggest one and it has the same firepower as a pistol. I'd do the same though. Giving the person with the best armor the worst weapon is just basic balancing. What does it matter if it takes two shots to kill a Bio-Dread, when you can take a hundred.
So they can all shoot the green? Maybe their lasers have settings, and they use green to save power. Makes sense for a ragtag rebel group to need to conserve energy. Plot hole filled!
Power gets shot and falls over but is otherwise fine. Good to see power armor actually armor. Hawk and Power then set a bomb on the door for five seconds. I think this is a humor moment cause they tell Scout to "Clear the door and count to five" but the bomb only has five seconds left so he says something like "The bomb goes off in five!" or "I don't have five!" Something like that. But, the music is so loud and his mic is so bad that I can't parse what he is saying here.
In the end, Scout makes it out and Power calls Pilot in for a landing.
It's a good opening scene overall. Showed us the strength of the Bio-Dread's by Scout having to run from them, and Power getting shot (and only minorly injured), and also gave a bit of characterization for the team (mostly through Scout's unintelligible yelling moment, and Tank calling Power 'old'). Not enough to know much, but enough to hold the viewer until the next commercial break.
We cut to Volcania and get the shot of Dread turning around and waving his hand to some music from the intro. We learn that it was a power station that Power blew up (nice), and it wasn't his first. We get some silhouexposition of "Project New Order" being delayed by three months (something I doubt we'll ever hear from again given this show's audience of those darn continuity-hating children).
We also get our first clue of what Digitization is. Dread calls it a system he can access, and implies it has knowledge from Power's past. So, it's a sort of human database? Turning a person's memories into bytes. That's fun.
This scene was less good, especially as an intro for the main antagonist. Dread just isn't very interesting in concept and execution. Oh, an evil guy that sits in his chair and is preparing for "Operation: Cell Kill?" Where have I not seen that before. A character monologuing about some future plan we have no context for nor any confirmation it actually will matter means nothing. He may as well said his "Fairy Discovery Program" had been set back eight million ha'seconds. Despite this, I still think he's too scary for a children's show. Especially a live action one. The cybernetic implants and pale skin are disturbing, coupled with repeated references to digitization which we currently know nothing about but it certainly isn't a day at King's Island (my current guess is on par with an evening at Michigan's Adventure).
The next scene is on their ship. It's got Millenium Falcon vibes. Y'know, like a pile of scrap and lights the set crew cobbled together without taking the exterior model into account. Power is still injured, surprisingly. It's good to see that they aren't invincible so early on. Really sells that they are fighting uphill.
They get a message from some lady Power used to know. In "what used to be San Fran." I like the small background banter between Hawk and Tank, even if I'm not sure what they said. It tells me they've been at this a while and are close friends. A good dynamic to have on your first episode. The same can be said with the conversation between Power, Pilot, and Scout.
Mentor looks pretty cool especially because they pronounce it like he's a wizard. More shows need to go the Visionaries route and have cyber-wizards. That and stop making wizards good or evil. I've met wizards. Magic doesn't make you grow morals and ethics, it removes them. Why the fuck would a wizard care about the Metal Wars? He can ponder his bubbling pool of magic goo and cast fireballs. Mentor and Merklynn should kiss. Mentor should take a page from Merklynn's book and make Power and Lord Dread do their chores in exchange for magical items.
On an unrelated note, foggy holograms are both realistic and awesome. If a bit impractical. Mentor says "there's very little left unfrayed" where the message came from. He says this is because the West Coast resistance was eliminated (a bit dark for 8 minutes into your kid's show man.), but what is 'fraying?' I'm sure it's just a word I don't know, but I like to think Dread spaghettified everything.
On their way to the transmission, Power has a really weird conversation with himself. The writing is supposed to be "Pilot is a little jealous of Power's old love" but it comes off more as if she's scared Power is about to describe the scent of Athena's labia. I don't know how you can make "we hung out, played chess." creepy, but he fucking did.

"It was our inside joke!" about "King's knight to Queen's bishop 3??" Can someone who chesses tell me what this means and why is it funny?
We get an ordinary shot of San Francisco from the air and another direct mention of the war. Dread burnt most of the people on the West coast. Jesus.
I've said it before, but this is super dark for a kid's show. I'm invested, but if I was eight and had just bought a Powerjet XT-7 toy I'd be crying that all his friends are dead and he got shot.
After they land, Pilot gets got by the classic "white gas that makes you cough once then fall over." I need to know where to buy that stuff.
I wonder what keeps these lights all powered. This isn't a Fallout future where we discovered fusion given the smoke in Volcania. Unless it's purely for the looks. If that's the case, Dread gets a lot of villain points. Unnecessary pollution is like, at least five.
The post-apocalyptic sets rule. The flashing traffic light as a centerpiece with the bookstore littered with ashen pages. I kiss the chef on his lips.
Though, once again this would lose child me. Baby :): doesn't want minute-long stretches of silent atmosphere. :): wants explosions and lasers!

So, Athena was sent by Dread to capture Power, but decided to murder him instead.
Soaron replying to Dread with a "Yeah m'lord" feels unprofessional. I vibe with it though. Too many henchmen are overly formal. Its always "Okay boss" and "right away sir." We need more "whatever"s and "I'll get to it when I get to it"s from the goonion.
So, the digitization happens from Soaron's gun arm (and maybe other guns too), and it is not just making a brain into data. It Matrix-es you.
In a pretty darn good monologue, Athena explains why this experience is so unpleasant.

"It's wires and metal, but it touches you." Yeah, man, that's what matter do. I believe it was Robespierre who said "Matter is when touch stuff. Energy is when touched by unstuff. Mr. LeBas, hand me that pistol."
She literally begs Power to die instead of being put inside "the Machine." It's become a recurring theme with my analysis, but this is way too much for a kid's show. It's good enough for an adult program though, with some decent concepts and themes that could definitely have been expanded upon in a forty-minute time slot. Give a few flashbacks of the Metal Wars and Athena and the resistance and her being so broken after only a few months(?) being digitized would really pull those emotional highs the writers wanted it to. I get the idea, but I don't know who Athena or the world was before everything went to hell. I don't even know how long its been! Power definitely remembers the world before, and acts like he was maybe in college at the time.
Has it only been a few months? So we should feel completely pressed at losing everything so fast.
Has it been a few years? Then we should focus on people forgetting the world before.
With it's current state in Schrodinger Time the show can't focus on either avenue and instead flounders this weird line where it's been long enough to have resistance cells rise and fall, the world to become rubble, but also for Power to not be that old and have been a young adult when it all went down.
Her raving review firmly pushes my verdict of digitization to around "12 hour Vekoma SLC and Flying Dutchman marathon" tier. Extremely in-joyable.
The show then proceeds to remind me it's the 80s and this is a show for kids with some terrible special effects and 'pew pew's.

Soaron was just too ahead of his time. The model is impressive, the animations good, but it just can't interact with actual sets.
Hawk's "flying" reaches Tokusatsu levels of pants, but without the charm of Ultraman and pals. Jimmy Olson could make a decent Ultraman. Also, he and Taro should kiss.
This fight scene of flying cars (they just have those?) and Hawk going "whoosh" and shooting lasers like "pew pew" while Soaron goes all "Woahaa" and fires back with a "Brkow Brkow" and the PNG of Hawk zooms in for the umpteenth time goes on for—I'll give a conservative estimate—twelve years.
Seriously. You had this great emotional scene only to follow it with an action sequence with no emotional weight. If your choreography isn''t good and the fight isn't fun to watch then the fight has to have emotional weight. This fight did for the first few seconds with the SotF saving Power and Athena, but it lost it immediately as the lasers and shots of toys flying stretched into infinity. This scene was made to tie into the toys so you can score points while watching the episode. No kid made it this far, and every adult who did was reminded this was a show for children right here and turned it off (if they even saw it given it aired at 5:00AM Sunday morning on some stations.).
The episode ends with a reminder of what it could be with a heartfelt moment between Power and Athena. Surprising for a children's show, and not quite baked enough for an adult drama. This seems to be this show's favored balance.
Also, there's a refuge called "The Passages." I'm guessing sewers. My heart wants catacombs, but this show only had a $1 million per-episode budget. They couldn't afford catacombs.
Overall, a pretty decent episode. Sets were neat, action sequences sucked (though the last one the toys interacted with lasted until it became funny, then unfunny, then funny again. The perfect length for trash.), and the drama was surprisingly competent.
The show feels fake though. Like, the dark atmosphere and intricate dialogue juxtaposed with toyetic costumes and action sequences makes this feel like a show made by aliens. Aliens don't need to exposit what the Metal Wars and Digitization are; those're just a fact of life for them. Most aliens I've met age sideways too, so they need an adult drama meant to sell them toys.
In conclusion, if you enjoyed the first episode of Captain Power you might be an alien.

When you take off the back housing this is what you’re greeted with. We can see the power supply, the rear IO board, and the measurement module
After removing a few more T-10 screws the power supply and the rear IO board slide right out. This is the rear IO board

8: An RJ45 Jack not accessible from the outside, if I had to guess this is either a management port, or it’s a backup port in case the one accessible from the outside breaks but qualified technicians still need Ethernet access to perform maintenance.
9: Piezoelectric buzzer, this will beep is the power supply suddenly gets disconnected and it will continue to beep for quite a while after the power supply is disconnected and even if there’s no battery on board
10: 2 super capacitors. Super capacitors have specs that are somewhere in between a battery and a capacitor. The larger one is rated at 2.2 farad and the smaller one is rated at 1 farad. Farad is the unit of measure for capacitance and it’s named after Michael Faraday. If I had to guess these serve 2 purposes. 1 is to make the power loss buzzer beep and the other is to keep the date and time and any configuration settings stored in volatile memory since there’s no CMOS battery. This is actually pretty smart because batteries die and often leak, but super capacitors don’t leak and corrode and they are ridiculously fast at charging up.
After removing the power supply, recorder driver board, and rear IO board this is what we are left with. The motherboard, the measurement module, the NBP pneumatic pump, and the LCD high voltage backlight board. It uses a fluorescent backlight so it needs a high voltage to make it light up, this can be anywhere from 500 to 1200 volts but they often provide very little current so touching it probably kill you but I still wouldn’t recommend it.
After removing the measurement module were left with just the backlight driver board, the motherboard, and the NBP pneumatic pump. There is a metal shield over the main components of the motherboard for EMI shielding.
Removing the metal shield grants us access to the CPU (the largest chip on the board) what I assume is a graphics driver chip (the second largest square chip) and 2 EPROMs that are the memory for some software aspects.

The attention to detail is amazing! That one little hole in the plastic just exists to access that screw inside. You can certainly tell that this device was never meant to be a consumer device. It’s built to be taken apart and serviced. All the screws are identical which makes disassembly and reassembly very easy. Unlike consumer products you can definitely tell that there was no expense spared in this things hardware design, that’s due to the fact that they know hospitals are going to pay the 5 figure price of the device because of its extreme quality, attention to detail and very long projected life cycle. Unlike consumer electronics it’s made in Germany and has a ton of hand assembly involved.
This is everything I have for mine. The monitor itself. 3 lead ECG cable. 5 lead ECG cable. Pulse oximeter. Hospital grade IEC power cable. Blood pressure hose. Adult arm blood pressure cuff. And the Intellivue remote. I got the remote today, idk why but people are selling them for super cheap on eBay. I paid $10 for it brand new in box. They usually go for like $500 from philips directly so I have no idea why people are selling them for so cheap. It does have to be plugged in via USB but it comes with a very long cable.
I finally got around to getting one of my servers to run the Intellivue XDS application. It’s a windows application meant to act as the server for Intellivue monitors. It also has a remote monitor function so you can view what’s on the monitor on the server, but it doesn’t work with the software version my monitor has. It can also log data but I spent 4 hours trying to setup the windows server needed to get that to work and just couldn’t get it to work. It’s probably due to the fact that the documentation on it is absolutely terrible.

ILLIT - "MAGNETIC"

Iain Mew: It's 2024, of course the single picked from their EP picked is the song with the most candied music-box elements. The song isn't as fully committed to replicating that sound as the tentative spoken word intro suggests, which means its sweetness is diluted, but the other elements in the mixture work with it. The bass stomping forward and the 2010s stuttered "you you you"s are a great alternative, and the 16-bit swoops and pops tie it all together with a fizz. [8]
TA Inskeep: This smart K-pop groove has the feel of '80s first-wave electro without actually sounding like it. I don't love the sound effect-sounding stuff, but "Magnetic"'s airiness (especially ILLIT's vocals) counterbalances its rubbery bassline nicely. [7]
Alfred Soto: Its twitchy pulse and winking vocals are a tonic after the relationship psychobabble of their American contemporaries. [7]
Nortey Dowuona: Super eclectic. I'm very proud of Martin KOR. For a first credit, he made his mark; he should have more than one credit. [8]
Isabel Cole: A pleasantly summery little bit of froth; I like the video game twinkles that pop up every now and then. [6]
Taylor Alatorre: Nobody wants an entire genre, even the most vertically integrated of genres, to be flattened into an arms race pursuit of weaponized competence. But there's a bit of a collective action problem, in that it's very hard to object to any single display of that weaponized competence. The besotted bits of spoken word that bookend "Magnetic" are like the blurb on the back of a bag of potato chips, touting its recipe's lovingly handmade origins and capped off with the inkjet signature of the company's long-dead, possibly apocryphal founder. The chips taste good. [7]
Katherine St. Asaph: Synth and squelch and pneumatic charm, engineered to precise specs. [8]
Ian Mathers: None of the alerts from my phone or computer (personal or work) sound much at all like that notification-ass effect they use here, and yet I have found myself reflexively checking to see whether someone's trying to get a hold of me at least 3-4 times each time I've played "Magnetic." I can't decide if it's genius or maddening or both. [6]
Michael Hong: ILLIT make low-key proclamations: "you're! my! crush!" exclaimed, but only on paper; "we're magnetized, I admit it," confessed, but not meant to be heard. "Magnetic" is all glittery synths and the word "you" transformed into a dial-tone sound effect, toeing the line between fantasy and reality in regards to a crush, but perhaps that's what makes it so addictive. Joshua Minsoo Kim: Pretty easy to pin down everything here: a spoken intro reminscent of vintage Apink, a vocal melody that points to K-pop’s undying love for “My Boo,” the sort of half-time breakdown that TWICE has been doing since “Likey,” a diaphanous atmosphere that screams NewJeans, bed squeaks that are decidedly unsexy, and pretty synth flourishes and vocal manipulations that are classic “K-pop does J-pop” a la Red Velvet’s “Russian Roulette.” It’s a summation of girlish K-pop throughout the past 15 years made palatable for the genre’s 5th gen. Leah Isobel: The TWICE-ification of NewJeans -- more garishly obvious, with a thicker candy shell that messes with the textural balance. Still tasty, but less subtle. [6]
Kayla Beardslee: Everything is NewJeans -- except it’s also not, Min Hee Jin, stop making your delusions everyone else’s problem. Trend shifts happen when a force builds up in the background without people noticing, until someone influential who’s great at reading the room happens to give it a push that bursts the damn, and suddenly everyone is swimming together in the changed current. In the last few months, the dam has burst on the 5th generation of K-pop, and "Magnetic" may well have been the song that caused it.
I don’t think even ILLIT’s company expected their level of breakout success: it seems like K-pop listeners were waiting for a release like "Magnetic" without even knowing it, and when it finally came along, it was so perfectly primed for the current moment that we had no choice but to be pulled in. What set the stage for ILLIT wasn’t one group so genius and unique that their tactics simultaneously influence everything yet cannot be replicated, but a combination of releases from multiple big names over several years that gradually pushed K-pop in a new direction. First, in late 2021, IVE debuted to instant massive success with a concept that was essentially "What if we just made good pop music without any gimmicks?" Then NewJeans picked up that same idea and debuted in summer 2022 to even more unprecedented success, causing an instant aesthetic reset in K-pop from the boldness and busy-ness of most leading 4th gen groups back to mellowness, warmth, and simplicity. Between mid-2023 and early 2024, Zerobaseone, RIIZE, and TWS debuted, which was the first time in several years that multiple high-profile boy groups debuted in quick succession. All three hit it off with breezy debut singles about letting boys have fun and be earnest instead of acting cool. (Think about the dorky confessions and bright synths of TWS’s "Plot Twist" next to to the shouted chorus and crunchy hip-hop textures of NCT 127’s "Kick It.") Then, in the span of three days at the end of this March, five different K-pop related girl groups debuted with singles that ranged from mellow candy-colored pop to tight electropop to chill pop-R&B to, finally, the ILLIT track we’re actually reviewing.
Most 4th gen K-pop singles are distinguished by a density of ideas and hugeness of sound that match the expanding size of the global K-pop audience in the late 2010s to early 2020s -- the glut of Blackpink-inspired girl crush comebacks, the boy groups doing a million loud hip-hop and electronic songs, tons of rapping regardless of how good they are at it, deliberately disjointed song sections -- but the flood of girl group debuts in the last week of March focused first and foremost on constructing a solid pop beat, then layering relaxed, approachable vocals over it with a topline that does just enough to keep the listener interested. (If you’re asking, "Is this too slight, or is it actually good?" then it’s probably on trend.) Compare these to the energy and density of "Dalla Dalla," "Savage," "Tomboy," or "Panorama," and you’re in two completely different worlds.
This is how we ended up with "Magnetic," which is nowhere near the most musically ambitious or complex track of the year, and certainly not the most vocally interesting, but is a gently glowing sign that we’ve transitioned into a new generation of K-pop that values entirely different aesthetics. It’s also so supernaturally catchy that it sounds like it was created in a lab: not in a "Haha K-pop is a product" kind of way, but like I think they actually had test tubes with different samples of the hooks sitting around in the HYBE building, and they probably tested them on animals to find the most insidiously catchy ones. (Like, does Lauren Aquilina have a dog who listens as she writes?) "Magnetic" is the biggest K-pop bop of the year so far, and yet it feels so small and accessible due to the incredible economy of its tight, groovy production and its multitude of hooks, which are embedded not just in the lyrics but also the rhythm of the instrumental against the vocals and the careful negative space placed throughout. (Oh! beat My! beat Gosh!) ILLIT are balanced on the crest of the wave as K-pop moves into a new generation, from the larger-than-life ambitions of the 4th gen to the idol-next-door simplicity of the 5th. They didn’t set the wave in motion, but they caught it just early enough to have a pivotal role in its shaping. "Magnetic" is perfectly constructed and historically significant, but it’s also cute and so much fun: I can’t imagine hating a song as endearing as this. Wait... why do I hear boss battle music? [9]

On This Day In History 1942 - American actress Hedy Lamarr and composer George Antheil received a patent for an electronic device that minimized the jamming of radio signals; it later became a component of satellite and cellular phone technology.
Lamarr shared her concept for using “frequency hopping” with the U.S. Navy and codeveloped a patent with Antheil 1941. Today, her innovation helped make possible a wide range of wireless communications technologies, including Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth.
Although Lamarr had no formal training and was primarily self-taught, she tinkered in her spare time on various hobbies and ideas, which included an improved traffic stoplight and a tablet that would dissolve in water to create a flavored carbonated drink.
During World War II, Lamarr read that radio-controlled torpedoes had been proposed. However, an enemy might be able to jam such a torpedo's guidance system and set it off course. When discussing this with her friend the composer and pianist George Antheil, the idea was raised that a frequency-hopping signal might prevent the torpedo's radio guidance system from being tracked or jammed. Antheil succeeded by synchronizing a miniaturized player piano mechanism with radio signals. Antheil sketched out the idea for the frequency-hopping system, which was to use a perforated paper tape which actuated pneumatic controls (as was already used in player pianos).
Antheil was introduced to Samuel Stuart Mackeown, a professor of radio-electrical engineering at Caltech, whom Lamarr then employed for a year to actually implement the idea. Lamarr hired the Los Angeles legal firm of Lyon & Lyon to search for prior knowledge, and to craft the application for the patent which was granted as U.S. Patent 2,292,387 on August 11, 1942, under her married name Hedy Kiesler Markey.
