you didn't have an explanation, just like every other night, and no 'home remedies guaranteed to solve your sleep problems' had ever worked in the past. until you had met simon.

the man was similar to you, in terms of sleep patterns, as he'd stay up late into the night, unable to sleep. but his problem mostly lied with ptsd and trauma, waking up during the night and failing with being able to fall back asleep, yours lied with god knows what, not being able to fall asleep within a normal time frame. still, at least he could relate.

often, you laid in bed, staring aimlessly up at the ceiling and silently willing your eyes to droop with exhaustion and fatigue. it was fruitless. so you'd toss and you'd turn with the occasional sigh and pulling of the blanket, or throwing them off your body. eventually, it led to a low grunt from simon on the other side of the bed, either getting his warmth stolen, or nearly being suffocated by the tossed blankets, or pillows.

the sheets beside you rustled as you felt the bed dip with his weight, creaking with the shift of matter. you swallowed thickly as you felt his eyes on you, huffing out a breath as he spoke lowly, voice rough and raspy from sleep, "can't sleep with y'r eyes open, y'know."

"Seventh graders at Thurgood Marshall Middle School in Rockford, Illinois are learning about STEM — but they’re also learning about real-world challenges.

The students have taken on a new project: assembling “solar suitcases” to help bring electricity to schools in Uganda’s Bidi Bidi Refugee Settlement, which is home to 270,000 South Sudanese refugees.

It’s an initiative led by We Share Solar, a nonprofit that provides science and technology learning projects for students that then go on to benefit other students in low-income areas of the world. 

The project introduces middle schoolers to fundamental electrical concepts, like positive and negative charges, voltage, amps, and wiring, ultimately producing a 12-volt DC solar power system that will be distributed among the refugee community.

“We’ve learned many things like positives and negatives, amps, volts, all that stuff, and how to wire stuff together,” Pratham Mehta, one of the Thurgood Marshall students, told WIFR News. 

“We’re taking all this stuff for granted, and other countries don’t have all this stuff, like electricity.”

The suitcases will bring electricity to 40 schools in the refugee settlement, which provide education to over 12,000 students. They are designed to be easily transported (thus the suitcase design), which makes them ideal for off-grid locations, like a refugee camp.

The panels in the suitcase collect sunlight and harness the energy in a built-in battery. It can then provide power to up to five light bulbs for 50 to 60 hours a week. Depending on the capacity of the system, it can also help power small electronics like phones or radios.

For people in the Bidi Bidi settlement — one of the largest refugee settlements in the world — this kind of power can make an enormous impact.

In fact, We Share Solar has deployed over 1,000 suitcases to “energy-scarce locations” across the world, with more than 500,000 students and teachers benefitting from the power they provide.

“The We Share Solar education program serves youth twice,” Hal Aronson, co-founder of the organization, said, “first as an educational experience for American youth and second as a renewable power and lighting system for youth in parts of the world that lack electricity.”

Along with connecting students to learning opportunities, the organization ensures each device is tested by a professional to ensure it is built to withstand energy demands. Then, the suitcases are installed by trained partners in destination countries, and students and teachers alike learn about the new clean energy technologies they have implemented.

At the start of the 2024 school year, the We Share Solar program was implemented in 13 Illinois schools, training educators in the curriculum and setting up the project across the state.

Everything happened so quickly, yet it felt like a millennia before I hit the ground–free falling through life and death in turn, the descent ending on the dingy floor of a parking garage. My vision cut in and out through the surges of white-hot agony that were coursing throughout my entire body, ears ringing.

I saw a blurry figure pile into a car, before peeling out of the parking space, kicking up dust as it raced out of the building. As I coughed up blood, I had the inexplicable urge to laugh. The irony, that this was the way I would go out–lying defenceless and helpless on the cold concrete, synthetic LED bulbs flickering incessantly above me.

The pain was becoming too unbearable, paralysing any coherent thoughts. There was one word that was repeated over and over again:

Spencer.

I didn't know if it was a prayer to some higher being, or merely a mantra, but it was the only single word I could make out in the haze of my dying mind. I wished I was the one with the eidetic memory, so that I could at least see his face one last time.

Blood pooled steadily around me as it left my body, never to return. The ringing in my ears steadily grew louder while the garage was dead silent, besides for the wet sounds of me choking on my own blood.

The bitter silence was cut off by the frantic shouting of a name. My name. The person neared, skidding to a halt and dropping to their knees beside me. The blurry figure hovered over me, obscuring the too-bright lights from view.

They came into partial focus, and I choked out a sob when I realised my pathetic prayers had been answered. Spencer was here. He shushed me soothingly, stroking my hair with shaking hands. "It's okay, baby. You're gonna be okay, okay?" He cradled my cheeks with his hands, trying in vain to wipe the blood from my face with his own bloodied hands. I sobbed again, squeezing my eyes shut.

"No, no, no, no," Spencer chanted, "Keep your eyes open, love, please. Look at me," He pleaded, gently shaking me so that I would open my eyes again. They landed on his face, screwed up in worry and pain. I vaguely wondered if he was hurt, if that's why he looked as though he too was in agony.

My eyes studied his face as best as they could, mapping out every detail, desperate to memorise it. They landed where they–without fail–always did. His eyes stared back with tears, frantic and pleading. I would gladly study these eyes for hours on end–and I did–so much so that he would often make fun of me for the incessant staring.

It didn't stop me though, not while those deep brown eyes with the ring of pure gold in the centre were there for me to look at. That's where my gaze now rested, on those gorgeous, breathtaking eyes.

"Spencer." My voice was foreign to me–shaky and so unbelievably small. "You- you came." I strangled out. He nodded, pushing my hair back off of my face.

"I'm here, baby. I'm here." His voice cracked and trailed off. He never let go of me as he radioed in, asking for an immediate ambulance. I didn't hear the response. Spencer carefully repositioned me, laying my head and shoulders in his lap as he searched for the source of the bleeding.

I gazed numbly up at Spencer, the lights causing a halo around his head with his messy curls. I thought that it was fitting. By all accounts he was an angel. My angel. I let out a shaky and ragged breath. How many more of those would I have? I could most likely count them with one hand.

Spencer stopped his quick search when he found what he was looking for, immediately putting pressure on the wound. I cried out at the added agony. "I know, I know, I know. I'm sorry, baby, I'm sorry." He kept chanting, cradling my head with his free hand. I whimper in pain.

"Spencer?" I breathed out, voice wobbling. He stroked my cheek lovingly, chest rising and falling rapidly.

"Yes?"

My face crumpled in pain. "It hurts."

He drew in a sharp, pained breath. "I know, baby, I know." He tucked a strand of my hair behind my ear. "Help's coming, okay? Hang in there, love." Another shaky breath. "Stay with me." His sentence tapered off to a barely audible volume, bloodied hand shaking violently on my face, tears dripping down his cheeks. "Please."

I started coughing again, more blood spraying over my face, some of it even ending up on Spencer's. It made me disproportionately angry–that his face was tainted with my dying blood. I wished I could wipe it off, but I didn't have the strength to lift my arm.

My vision swam as I started to lose what was left of my consciousness as what felt like the last of my blood left my body. My eyes fluttered closed.

"No, no, no, hey!" Spencer gently tapped my cheek. "Don't close your eyes. Stay awake until the ambulance arrives, please," He begged, but my lids were incredibly heavy.

"I-I feel–," I sucked in a shallow breath. "So cold."

He bundled me tighter against him, trying to sooth me with whispered comforting words. The last thing I remembered before I slipped out of consciousness was Spencer's calming voice and the sound of approaching sirens.

Josh was tired. He'd been on the set for hours, trying the same scene again and again, unable to get the role he was trying to convey just right. The director had lost his shit by this point, and had made Josh go outside for a breather and to collect his thoughts, because no matter what he tried, he just couldn't do it right. As soon as he touched it, his vision went. Terrified at his sudden blindness, he realised he couldn't smell, or hear either. His senses had been ripped from him, as if he never had them. Everything just stopped.

"Mr Hutcherson? Are you okay in there? It's been over an hour since you came back here… you're needed on set!" The extra, Carl, had been forced to come and get Josh on the director's behalf. Knocking for the fifth time without reply, he opened the door, to see the room empty, everything pristine bar a lamp laid sideways on the floor. "Must've been brought here by mistake" Carl laughed, and called out for Josh again. "Mr Hutcherson?" He must not be here, he thought. Picking up the lamp, suddenly it responded to his touch, a cloud of smoke enveloping Carl, and suddenly, Josh was in front of him. Golden bracelets adorned his wrists, and a gold collar was wrapped around his neck. Josh's eyes glowed gold and he boomed "Master… how may I serve you?" "Mr Hutcherson? Is that… you?" "If that is what you wish to call me, then yes." Josh's mind was screaming inside the genie's body, unable to convey his real emotions or thoughts. It was as if he was trapped inside this form, unable to be freed. "Tell me, what do you wish?" "I guess… I wish for a drink, this prank is insane, lets celebrate it with one haha" Carl chuckled. Suddenly, a drink was in his hand, seemingly materialised there out of nothing. "Woah…." Carl got a sudden idea. Josh had always been an infuriating coworker… so… maybe he should pay… "I wish to be Josh Hutcherson." Carl said, dead serious. The restaurant was perfect, in that understated way George always seemed to find. Cozy booths lined the walls, each lit with the warm glow of hanging Edison bulbs, and soft jazz music hummed in the background. It wasn’t too fancy, but it wasn’t casual either—just the right amount of charm to make the night feel special.

George sat across from you, his elbow resting on the table, his chin propped in his hand as he gave you that familiar, mischievous smile. His hair was slightly messy, like he hadn’t quite managed to tame it before he left the house, and his shirt—simple but fitted—clung just enough to remind you why you couldn’t stop looking at him.

“So,” he said, tilting his head slightly, “did I manage to impress you with my choice of venue? Or are you going to roast me for not picking somewhere with a view of the Thames?”

You laughed, shaking your head. “I think this place is perfect. Honestly, I’m more impressed you didn’t go for something over-the-top ridiculous. No themed restaurants, no 20-course tasting menus… Who are you, and what have you done with George Clarkey?”

He gasped in mock offense, placing a hand over his chest. “Wow. I invite you on a romantic evening, and this is how you repay me? Ruthless.”

“Romantic evening, huh?” you teased, arching an eyebrow. “That’s a big claim for someone who picked a place based on its five-star Yelp reviews.”

“Okay, first of all, Yelp doesn’t even exist here. And second, it’s not the restaurant that makes it romantic—it’s me,” he said, leaning back with a self-satisfied grin.

You rolled your eyes but couldn’t help laughing. “Sure, George. Whatever you need to tell yourself.”

As the evening went on, the teasing and laughter gave way to softer, quieter moments. Between bites of food and sips of wine, you talked about everything and nothing—your favorite childhood memories, places you wanted to visit, the kind of future you dreamed of.

For a moment, neither of you spoke. Then, slowly, George reached up to tuck a strand of hair behind your ear, his fingers lingering against your cheek. “You’re beautiful, you know that?” he said softly.

Your breath hitched, and before you could respond, he leaned in, his lips brushing against yours in a kiss that was slow and deliberate, like he was savoring every second.

“Well, well, well. What do we have here?”

You froze, your lips still inches from George’s, as the unmistakable voice of Arthur Hill cut through the air like a knife.

Slowly, you turned your head to see him standing at the entrance of the restaurant, holding a pint in one hand and wearing a grin so wide it could rival the Cheshire Cat’s.

“Oh my God,” you muttered, your face burning with embarrassment as you pulled away from George.

Arthur, clearly enjoying himself, sauntered over, his eyes twinkling with amusement. “Clarkey, mate, you didn’t tell me you were going on a date tonight. Thought we were mates, huh?”

George groaned, running a hand down his face. “Arthur, can you not?”

“Oh, come on. Don’t be shy now,” Arthur teased, plopping down on the seat across from you. “You two looked very cozy back there. Don’t let me interrupt—carry on.”

You buried your face in your hands, mortified. “I can’t believe this is happening,” you mumbled.

George laughed softly, clearly torn between annoyance and amusement. “Arthur, seriously, can you not ruin this for me?”

“Ruin it? I’m enhancing the moment,” Arthur said, gesturing broadly. “What’s more romantic than a third wheel with excellent commentary?”

You peeked out from behind your hands, shooting him a glare. “You’re the worst.”

“I’ve been told that,” he said, unfazed. “But honestly, I’m happy for you two. Clarkey’s been talking about you non-stop for weeks, so it’s nice to finally see him make a move.”

Your eyes widened, and you turned to George. “You’ve been talking about me?”

George’s face went red, and he scratched the back of his neck awkwardly. “Uh… maybe a little.”

Arthur snorted. “A little? Mate, you’ve been practically writing poetry.”

“Okay, that’s enough,” George said, standing up and grabbing Arthur by the arm. “I think it’s time for you to leave.”

Arthur laughed but didn’t resist as George dragged him toward the door. “Fine, fine. I’ll let you two get back to your little love fest. But just so you know—I’m telling Chris all about this.”

“You do that,” George said, shoving him out the door.

As George returned to the table, his cheeks still faintly pink, you couldn’t help but laugh. “That was… something.”

“Yeah, sorry about that,” he said, sitting down beside you again. “Arthur has a talent for showing up at the worst possible moments.”

“It’s fine,” you said, smiling. “Honestly, it’s kind of funny. In a horrifying, mortifying sort of way.”

George grinned, taking your hand in his again. “Well, for what it’s worth, I’m glad we had this night. Even with the interruption.”

“Me too,” you said softly, leaning into him.

And as the night went on, you realized that no amount of interruptions could take away from what you had with George. Because even in the most awkward, unexpected moments, he still made you feel like the only person in the world.

The cupboard was small. Too small, really, for three grown adults to squeeze into comfortably and do anything other than stand there. The faint smell of dusty cedar lingers in the air, mingling with the earthy scent of Remus’ cologne and the sharp, slightly sweet tang of Sirius’ favorite hair pomade. A single light bulb above flickers briefly, casting shadows that were far too dramatic for the occasion.

Sirius Black, of course, had thought of this brilliant idea.

“C’mon, it’ll be fun,” he’d said earlier, with that trademark smile that could convince you to do just about anything. The proposition—a quick shag in the closet—had seemed thrilling, spontaneous, and utterly tantalizing at the time. Shamelessly, you hadn’t even hesitated to agree.

 Remus, on the other hand, had hesitated plenty. His brow had furrowed deeply, arms crossed over his chest as he’d regarded Sirius with the air of someone evaluating whether the juice was worth the squeeze.

“This is by far the stupidest idea you’ve come up with,” he’d muttered, and yet he still followed the two of you inside. Because no matter how stupid it really was, he couldn’t say no to either of you.

And so, here you all were.

“Well, this is rather cozy,” Sirius says brightly, wedged between you and Remus in a way that left no room to breathe. He stood angled slightly toward the door and facing you, his left shoulder brushing against Remus behind him. He was practically vibrating with excitement – his mercurial eyes darting between the two of you like he can’t decide who to kiss first.

“Cozy?” Remus mutters. “I can’t feel my ribs. Someone’s elbow is digging into my side.”

“That’s me, sorry about that.” You laugh, trying to shift without toppling the precarious balance of limbs and bodies. Every movement would seem to send someone else stumbling in the cramped space.

“You two have absolutely no sense of adventure,” Sirius teases, leaning in toward you with a sly smirk. His hand brushes against your hip as he nuzzles your neck, his hair tickling your cheek. His warm tongue traces a ticklish, shivering path on the side of your neck. “Live a little.”

 Remus sighs audibly, his breath warming the back of Sirius’ neck. “Living a little doesn’t usually involve being crammed into a broom cupboard like misbehaving teenagers.”

“Speak for yourself,” Sirius quips, turning his head to glance at Remus over his shoulder.

He fumbles with the buttons on your top for a moment. His enthusiasm is contagious, and you can’t help but laugh as his fingers miss the buttonhole twice before finally getting it. His hand trails up your side, pausing just above your bra before squeezing your breast. His free hand reaches back to tug at Remus’ tie – which had gotten snagged on something – to pull him closer. His lips find yours for a moment before he breaks away with a grin.

“Merlin, you taste good,” he murmurs against your lips, then making an attempt to capture Remus’ mouth next.

Remus tilts his head away just in time with a grunt. “Sirius, would you stop pulling my tie like that? I can’t—damn it, now it’s caught again.”

Stifling a laugh, you watch as Sirius – undeterred – tries to yank the tie free, only to accidently smack Remus’ face.

“Oi!” Remus exclaims, trying – and failing – to step back, only managing to hit the back of his head on a box.

“Sorry, Moony,” Sirius says quickly, flashing the man a sheepish smile.

“You’re like a hurricane.” You reach out to steady yourself on Remus’s arm as Sirius shifts his weight again. You meet him with an open-mouthed kiss that melts into laughter when you accidentally tug on his hair in a not-so-sexy, clumsy manner.

“Excuse me for being passionate.” He shoots you a wink before turning his full attention back to Remus, who looks like he was about five seconds from strangling him—with his tie, no less.

“Passionate or not, you’re standing on my foot,” you remark pointedly, trying to wiggle free from his weight.

Sirius glances down apologetically, lifting his boot just enough to release your poor toes. “Better?”

“No. You’re still too tall.”

“I'm with her.”

“And what are you, Moony?” Sirius scoffs. “A very dainty giraffe?”

“This isn’t going to work,” Remus complains, though he makes no move to leave. Instead, his large hand squeezes one of your hips, stabilizing you as his lips brush your temple.

“We’ll make it work,” Sirius says confidently, nudging his nose against Remus’.

He steals a kiss from Remus, effectively silencing the sarcastic remark that was surely forming on his lips. You stand on your tiptoes and kiss the corner of Remus’ mouth before finding a tender spot on his neck, gently sucking at the sensitive skin. You lift your head as your ears catch the sound of a small metallic clink of Sirius undoing Remus’ belt. One of Remus’ hands goes to cup the side of his boyfriend’s face, moaning into his mouth as you gently stroke him through his boxers. Still wanting to keep his tongue in Remus’ mouth, Sirius attempts to blindly take your shirt off.

“Careful, Padfoot,” you warn with a smirk.

“Oh, come on,” he groans dramatically – his other hand flailing to find something to steady himself on. His palm lands on a precariously balanced shelf, which wobbles ominously.

“Watch—” Remus starts, but it was too late.

The entire shelf rattles, sending a cascade of mismatched scarves and random knickknacks raining down on the three of you. The room erupts into laughter as you all try to shield yourselves from the minor avalanche. The giggling was infectious now, none of you able to take the situation seriously anymore.

Still giggling, the three of you finally managed to untangle yourselves from the small room. You stumble out into the open space of the room, blinking at the sudden brightness and stretching like you’d just escaped a prison.

Your hair was a mess, Sirius’ shirt long-lost, and Remus’ tie was still hanging on for dear life. None of you cared.  

“That wasn't so terrible. Maybe we just need a bigger place?” Sirius throws an arm around both you and Remus.

“Not a chance, Black.” You snort, swatting at his arm. “No more closets.”

“I second that.”
