The fact that Teddy and Spencer had a million on screen kisses but there wasn’t even ONE for PJ and Skyler? Criminal, I say.

Miley and Jake and Teddy and Spencer

Something I find interesting when thinking about old Disney couples is how much Miley and Jake almost never come to mind. Compare that to Teddy and Spencer and I am so ready to let out my grievances about them at any time, just say when.  Whenever I think back to “That one time Disney touched on cheating”, my mind automatically jumps to Teddy and Spencer, and then eventually remembers Hannah Montana did it first. But I guess I could argue that Good Luck Charlie did it better, at least the episodes themselves. And I think that's especially weird since Miley and Jake had WAY more build up and episodes to them than the other couple. But I think the answer lies in the pathos.

When the audience found out that Jake cheated, it was through Lily’s eyes. Oliver and Lily kept it from Miley for most of the episode and then when she eventually found out, she beat him up offscreen (I haven't seen the episode in a long time so I could be remembering things wrong, I admit). But even as she beat him up, the laugh track still played, they were both dressed in silly costumes, and I think we were watching Lily’s, Oliver’s, and maybe her dad’s (along with the horrified children’s) reaction to it as opposed to seeing it ourselves. And then we never see Jake again.         

Meanwhile with Good Luck Charlie, we see things from Teddy’s pov and are questioning alongside her every moment. And when she finds out the truth, especially after she apologized for not trusting him and Spencer straight up lying to her face, it’s devastating. And we not only get her reaction but Skyler’s too, something that was missing from the Hannah Montana episode. Teddy is genuinely crushed by the revelation, she cries, and has a nice heart to heart with her mom, and the episode really respects her grief. I don’t think there were any unnecessary laugh tracks during that moment and I think that was really effective. Even as a little kid watching I felt sad with Teddy (and Skyler) and I also really liked the way they didn’t demonize Skyler too. Spencer was the guilty one, Skyler and Teddy were victims, end of story. Seeing the girls come together and give us the (iconic) “Two Timing Pig” song was honestly really cathartic, even if they didn’t release it in the end. They still got some things off their chest, they got to become friends, and the both of them allowed themselves to move on  with their lives… for the most part.

While I like the build up and revelation of Spencer’s betrayal a lot more than Jake’s, I’ll give Hannah Montana credit for letting Miley move on. I think by the next episode Jesse came back and Miley was ready and willing to date him (which, same). But Good Luck Charlie milked the drama between Spencer and Teddy way too much for my liking. From the moment it was revealed that Spencer was a cheater, he was DEAD to me and I could never accept the fact that Teddy took him back even as a kid. Like, NO GIRL! RUN! Why aren’t you running?! To this day, I mourn the fact that they reunited because it feels so icky. I get that she forgave him and that’s fine but I think they should have just left it at that. I had kinda stopped watching by the time Beau came along but even with the little knowledge that I have of their brief relationship, I 100% believe she should have picked him (or herself), no question. Anyone but Spencer. 

      All in all, I just think it’s interesting to look back with a more critical eye and be able to pick up on storytelling details that make a lot more sense to me now and understand why something worked for me/why it didn’t. Kudos to GLC for giving Teddy space to feel and kudos to HM for giving Miley the freedom to move on.

Welcome to The First Season Finale of GoodbyeNewYork!

Hold onto your horses, people, it's about it get messy out there!

The away teams are set and ready to head out into the city. After an extra hardy breakfast at the diner, all the residents Sans Sada still in her 'cell', gather at the stairwell door in the Atrium to bid good luck and farewell to the brave scouts. The teams are as follows:

Ashton's Team: Charlie, Valerie, Roman - Non-Perishable Foods and Medicine

Zach's Team: Ember, Ria, Lane, Dalton - Non-Perishable Foods and Clothing

Mal's Team: Kang, Sev, Toby, Jeremiah, JP - Fuels/water, machine parts

Below is the series of events on Run Day. Feel free to do solo posts/group posts/threads, anything you'd like, but make sure to tag the time and place in your posts, starters, and tags. The Finale will run approx. until May 2nd, while the main is updated for Season two! There is no reason to pause current threads, and in fact, it's recommended to also use this time to wrap them up in preparation for the time skip that will come with announcement of Season Two.

Away Teams:

8:00am - Depart The Wexley with a team heading in each of three directions set out by Ashton. Each team is kept in communication with each other and The Wexley by walkie talkie.

8:20am - Ashton's team reaches their first destination and starts to fill their bags with supplies.

8:30am - Zach's team reaches their destination and start to fill their bags with supplies.

8:40am - Mal's team reaches their destination and start to load up push trollies with supplies.

10:00am - A structurally unsound part of the department store collapses trapping Val and Charlie. Val's arm is crushed and stuck in the debris.

10:10am - An SOS is made on the walkie talkie, Skyler insists on joining the other team to help Charlie.

10:30am - Skyler arrives and attempts to crawl through a hole made into the space Charlie and Val are trapped in. Val needs to amputate her own arm to escape.

10:45am - Val and Charlie are successfully extracted from the space, but the way in and out collapses onto Skyler as he's making his way out and crushes him.

11:15am - A ragged group of survivors tries to ambush Zach's team. They're defeated, loading of supplies continues after agreement that they delay heading back long enough to ensure they won't be followed by other hostile survivors. Dalton has gone missing in the chaos.

11:28am - Mal's team is nearly overrun by chompers and ends up separated in the fray.

2:15pm - The survivors of all the teams start making their way back to The Wexley.

The Wexley:

8:00am - Bid farewell to the run teams, preparations start with reorganizing of storage spaces and clearing of bedding back to now safe suites.

10:00am - Additional space in the The W is begun to be prepared for sorting.

11:00am - A few residents start to finish the decorating of the tree, now occupying the center of the foyer, as a surprise for Charlie. Vincent Blanche starts to feel more and more sick and attempts to hide in the basement. He collapses in the stairwell.

11:15am - A trio of residents comes across Vince who turns just as they check on him, infecting them before they manage to kill him with a push down the stairs.

12:15pm - Residents sent upstairs to return bedding to the suites aren't returning and it's raising notice. Someone opens the door to the stairwell and a horde of at least ten chompers flood out and into the Atrium. Mr. Wexley calls for an evacuation of the building and pulls the fire alarm to alert anyone on upper floors. Sada Vang is forgotten about locked in her 'cell'.

12:20pm - The stairwell and rear exit are propped open, and Mr. W and some residents attempt to draw the chompers out of the building with loud noises. Fleeing when the horde begins to head their way.

2:00pm - Mr. Wexley returns to the building with Lolly in tow, coming across a returning Mal in the alley. The trio secure and lock off the Atrium level, hunkering down to wait to let in the others upon their return.

2:40pm - The first of the scout team survivors starts to return to the building.

2:50pm - Spotting the returning scout team members, surviving residents start returning to the building.

As night closes in on 'run day' those left in the building are forced to start coming to terms with the fact that they may be all that's left of the survivors. The remaining survivors in the Wexley are as follows:

"Not in the mood for parties anytime soon, not after those two weeks," he replied with a sheepish smile, "But we could do think of something to take a break from plannin' our next move." Sometimes, people needed a little distraction; how long could one function like that before they lost their mind? "Yeah, bad luck..." Bad luck would be someone breaking into his house, getting their hands on his laptop and everything related to his side job. Skyler couldn't believe how calm he was, knowing he was one wrong move (not when his wrong move) from getting caught by the end of this madness. He hoped his neighbor was still alive and kept an eye on the house. "Glad to be anywhere else," he added after a moment. NYU sounded like a much better place to be stuck, but it was even better that the man had managed to get back to the building before the outbreak. "Just a regular morning then, huh? Do you think someone might still be there?"

Skyler wished they could put a go-pro on one of those dudes, and the thought amused him so much, that he had to clear his throat to stop himself from chuckling. He'd hate to explain his idea to a newly met person. "Yeah, I do. Thanks a lot," he replied with a smile. "It will be cool to see everything myself when I can leave my apartment. Growing your own food sounds like a really good idea. Too bad it's getting colder already, these viruses always pick a horrible moment to attack, don't they..." They've reached their doors and Skyler patted his pockets before he realized Charlie would give him the keys in the morning. "We'll pretend the door's locked, alright? No more sneakin' out, promise."

"What, you gonna throw a party or something?" Completely toneless ignoring the whole situation they're in right now, yet perhaps it's something people could use. The holiday season was coming, Ashton had initially planned to head back to Minnesota for a Thanksgiving weekend surprise and now.. sure this was his home, but he'd give anything to simply head back home home. Ashton frowned as Skyler explained, a club seemed like the worst place for shit to hit the fan. "Apocalypse and you got stood up too huh. Two weeks in there sounds terrible." If Skyler's home wasn't too far, maybe they could always make a trip out, Ashton took a mental note for the future. "I was teaching, at NYU that morning. I keep thinking, if I had stayed back at the labs another hour more... not sure if I'd make it out." It felt only right to share considering he was the one to ask. There was a look of worry on Ashton's face though, wondering what happened at campus, if things were okay, if anyone survived.

Ash sighed, "y'know, even monsters need to sleep, so I was just hoping to test that theory." Nothing could run continuous without ever stopping, so how could these things run forever? He was completely proven wrong. "Of course, till our next scavenge at Walmart, you know whose doors to knock on," Ash was certain Charlie would probably help him get set up either way. "Yeah, second floor are the common areas, for food you can head to the diner there, Rosie and Charlie runs it. Gym's in the basement and still pretty decent. Rooftop's open as well if you need some air, there's a garden where we're growing some food too." Ashton listed off the key areas of interest, to be honest there wasn't much that's interesting per se, but they were equipped to survive at least. "Once you're out of lock down, we can bring you around."
