The Sunday Review: Life as a Dressage Trainer in Three Countries
“In the end, everything has always been about the horses…and credit must also be given to my dear, tight-fisted father, who demanded I continue my lessons despite my first day’s disaster at the riding school-so he could get his money’s worth!” ― Gunnar Ostergaard: Life as a Dressage Trainer in Three Countries When I was a young girl I loved to read. I would read all day and into the night.…

Too late for the poll but I'm studying the homewings - what is the archaelogical and palaeontological record of how these skydogs came to be domesticated? Where are the proto-homewings who only just started to diverge from whatever the common ancestor with stormchasers was, and how did it happen?
Was it a case of a couple individuals with injured wings who couldn't keep up, and the flock is like come ON Dave we are MIGRATING it's HURRICANE SEASON
But then they all kinda shamble upon some early modern humans with like their campfire and they want to LEAVE
but dave-the-dragon is very sore and very tired and that fire is actually lovely
dave-the-dragon is lulled by the warmth the other dragons who are milling around see d-t-d being calm and are like well then
we do not like this but we are not Spooked there is no Spook here
and one of the early modern humans are like huh? large sky dog is injured. we know how to deal with injury. apply Leaf to Dog
and like dave-the-dragon is getting cared for and fed and the flock kinda sorta mills along
and a few months later dave is mostly skyworthy again he's been acclimated to these long apes and the flock is returning for another storm in the other direction, and return for their flockmate
and NOW, being flock animals, stormwings are very much inclined to Read the Proto-Room, and Dave is right over there getting scratchies by a young humanthing who's not yet been caught scratching the sky cheetah, and off they all go again, Dave in tow
And perhaps next season there's one of them got caught by a bolt of lightning, and perhaps there's another that's about to whelp and they remember Dave-the-Dragon's weird run-in with the humans, and so they leave a few of their members behind. They make sure of course to to Watch and Wait for a while, see how the weird upstart monkeys are reacting - they do eat meat, after all, and it wouldn't do to leave their most vulnerable alone with a little bow on.
But Dave seems okay with it, and well he should know, and so this one flock has a wee tradition.
And flocks aren't these static things, members die and come and leave, and eventually you have a *few* flocks who have that one member who knows that sometimes when one of you needs to rest, the weird long apes will help anything so long as they can pat it on the head.
... Then fast-forward fifty thousand years and your descendants are a fraction of your size, get taken out flying on a lead and harness, and get fed thrice a day from tins of "Meaty Bits - Electric Ozone Beef."

Wild Stallion Reunites With His Family, and It’s a Scene of Pure Freedom
This is a touching story, and I'm so happy that these horses regained their life.
You know, some stories have a way of reaching deep into your soul, don’t they? This one will make you laugh, cry, and fall in love with the raw, untamed beauty of a family reunited against all odds. It’s about Blue Zeus, a wild stallion with a heart as fierce as the open plains, and Clare Staples, whose determination feels like the stuff of legends. Clare, the heart and hands behind Skydog…

Duane Allman, (Skydog)
In 2003, he was ranked number 2 in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time, second only to Jimi Hendrix.
Duane Allman's skills as a guitarist were complemented by personal qualities such as his intensity, drive and ability to draw the best out of others in making music. Fans still refer to Allman affectionately by his nickname "Skydog".

Thora, a 6-month-old unweaned foal, was trapped and taken from her family on 22 February 2024
Photo: Chad & Lynn Hanson, Wyoming Mustang Institute
McCullough Peaks, Wyoming Bait and Trap
The Bureau of Land Mangement’s (BLM) bait and trap operation at McCullough Peaks, scheduled to run Nov 2023 - March 2024, has been targeting young horses, including unweaned foals. Thora (6 mo), Bandero (6 mo) and Sky Dancer (5 mo) were trapped, taken away from their mothers, and removed to the filthy Rock Springs holding facility. Additionally concerning, the official Gather Report for 22 February 2024 on the BLM website identified Thora, who was born on 26 August 2023, as a mare. She was a foal, nursing with her mother every hour in the wild before she was trapped. A yearling, Cat Ballou, was found dead the morning after removal, having suffered traumatic head injuries, probably from desperate attempts to escape the pen and return to her family. An inconsequential internal review by the BLM determined that all of its Comprehensive Animal Welfare Program standards had been followed. Cat Ballou died, they claim, because they did everything right.
Please call and/or write:
BLM Director: Tracy Stone-Manning Tel: (202) 208-3801 Email: [email protected]
BLM Cody Field Office Manager: Richard "Cade" Powell Tel: (307) 578-5900
BLM Wyoming State Director: Andrew Archuleta Tel: (307) 775-6256
Interior Secretary Deb Haaland Tel: (202) 208-3100 Email: [email protected]
Tell them to please:
Stop the unnecessary bait and trap of McCullough Peaks wild horses.
Stop trapping nursing foals and taking them away from their mothers.
Foaling Season has begun. According to the BLM’s own regulations, round ups should not take place 6 weeks before or after foaling season. Explain why you are doing it, regardless.
Explain why a 6-month-old, nursing foal - Thora, captured on 22 Feb 2024 - has been identified as a mare on the BLM’s official Gather Report on its website.
Also call:
BLM Rock Springs Holding Facility Tel: (307) 352-0292 to ask that photos of all the captured McCullough Peaks horses be regularly posted.
Contact your Senators and Representative at Tel: Congressional Switchboard: (202) 224-3121 Email all three at once: www.democracy.io

Skydog Sanctuary recognizes, documents, loves, cherishes, and supports the obvious deep bonds wild horse families have for each other. Reuniting families that were torn from each other by the BLM is one of our priorities. The fact is we live in a world where a government agency that is mandated by law to protect wild horses goes out and steals their foals, even from those as internationally renowned, photographed, and adored as the McCullough Peaks herd. It is a crime that breaks our heart on a whole other level. It is deeply distressing for us, for the people who love and follow these herds, and for the photographers who document them and have a connection with them on a personal level. My heart goes out to them.
What kind of people think they have the right to steal the babies of another species and call it right and fair? It’s just BLM business. I don’t know how the staff go home and sleep at night after telling their families they steal babies from their mothers for a living. It's monstrous. It is speciesism at its worst to arrogantly believe that we are the only ones who care for and feel deeply for our children and family. It also demonstrates total ignorance of wild herd behaviors and dynamics on the part of the bureau responsible for them.
We need to voice our concern and outrage, so please make the calls and send the emails. We have been tasked with being good stewards of this earth in the wake of destruction caused by the federal land management agencies that are supposed to do exactly that, but could care less.
