Hearing Alfonso's "dispose of them" voice clip unlocked a thousand memories in my brain. I had so many Skies voice clips on my oooooold computer (back when a Family Computer was a thing. I am old, you guys), and I had Alfonso voice clips set for. Many things. I had the "dispose of them" one set for emptying my recycle bin, and his "Farewell..." for when I shut the computer down!! I was an extremely normal child who made her computer Alfonso talking to her!!!!! NORMAL KIDS ACT THIS WAY ABOUT THE WORST CHARACTER FROM A GAME!!!
#skies of arcadia#this is what i'll contribute#insane things like how half my pets were named after Skies characters at one point#RIP to my beloved betta fish Alfonso

Favorite Dreamcast games for someone who only owns 2 ones (SA2 and one disc of Skies of Arcadia)
Toy Commander was my fuckin jam. Split screen multiplayer just hits different.
The Dreamcast is such a beloved console to me. Like I don't get nostalgic often, but that console brings back memories of a simpler time of Saturday nights playing Sonic Adventure and Ready 2 Rumble and Crazy Taxi 2. *sigh* the good ole days.

Once upon a time, in the magical land of Arcadia, there was a place where the sky was always painted with the soft pastels of dawn, and rainbows arched with endless grace. This place was known as the Vale of Whimsy, and it was home to a very special unicorn named Luminara.
Luminara was not like other unicorns. Her mane was the color of the pink blossoms that floated on the breeze, and her horn spiraled up with hues that shimmered like the morning sun. But what made Luminara truly unique was not her appearance, it was her task. Every year, as spring began to whisper through the valleys of Arcadia, Luminara embarked on an important journey to bring color and joy to the world.
This year, as the first buds began to bloom, Luminara set out to find the hidden nest of the Easter Dragon. The Easter Dragon was a gentle creature who spent the whole year painting eggs with colors no human could dream of, and Luminara’s job was to spread these eggs throughout the world to herald the arrival of spring.
As Luminara entered the Easter Dragon’s lair, she was greeted by the sight of thousands of eggs, each a masterpiece of color and design. The Easter Dragon welcomed her with a warm smile, his scales glinting with a myriad of soft hues. Together, they loaded Luminara’s saddlebags with the precious cargo.
With a heart full of joy and a purpose clear in her mind, Luminara set off. She traveled over the rolling Candyfloss Hills, through the Whispering Woods, and across the Sparkling Streams. Everywhere she went, she left behind a trail of colorful eggs, hidden amongst the new blooms and fresh grasses.
Children and creatures of Arcadia awoke to a world transformed. They found eggs perched in the crooks of trees, nestled in the heart of flowers, and resting on the soft moss by the rivers. Laughter and merriment filled the air as they celebrated the magic of spring and the gifts of the Easter Dragon, delivered by their beloved unicorn, Luminara.
And so, year after year, the legend of Luminara grew. She became known as the Bringer of Spring, the Harbinger of Happiness, and the Guardian of the Easter Dragon’s treasures. And the Vale of Whimsy became a place of legend, where the magic of innocence and joy was renewed with each passing spring, all thanks to a unicorn with a heart as pure as the Arcadian skies.

dolphin sucks so bad as an emulator I hadn't really gotten around to playing it
but if I can emulate it for dreamcast it's perfect
redream my beloved <3 (played both sonic adventure and sonic adventure 2 on it, it runs like butter [meanwhile that disaster that is dolphin might be one of the factors that made me ragequit shadow the hedgehog 2005])
i'm about to get very silly >:}
#felix rambles#skies of arcadia#yeah I ragequit StH2005 BHSBDHSHS#I mean I played one path all the way through and then started a second one#got to central city and the level design was so bad I just gave up AHAHAHA#not to mention the problems I had with the controller connection with dolphin#i see cosmic fall in my nightmares

I want to know if I count with your support to finish this monster ‘what if’ fanfic:
Stuff Happens (read it in AO3) is my what if fic after Wizards and I’m glad I wrote 30 chapters of it before the movie because I am now electing to ignore it, no matter how amazing the animation is.
Here’s a quick part of chapter 30 that was published back in March, but currently I’m writing chapter 31 and I want to see how many of you will like me to actually continue this story and renew my will to finish this once and for all.
So, bascially, in summary, it includes Nimue, Merlin’s past, the wizards don’t die and live with Douxie now, Nari lives in Arcadia, Jim gets Excalibur and Claire has some crazy destiny plus the villain is Mordred and the rest of the Arcane Order and everybody in Arcadia are just pissed at a perfectly ruined Tuesday night. There’s the Douxie and Zoe content i wish i got and Archie ships them.
In summary of the craziness that happens, of course.
.................................
It was a battle for the ages, at least that’s what the history books will say in a couple of hundred years or so. Arcadia coming together, humans, trolls and all magical creatures in the area alike, plus the help of extraterrestrials. It wasn’t something anyone would believe if they didn’t see it.
If looks could kill, Mordred and the Arcane Order would be dead by now. Merlin glared the most, not only was he fighting for Arcadia, but he was also avenging his mother. Many here had their reasons for going against Mordred and his Shadow Army, but tonight, the only reason was simple.
Take. Him. Down.
“Play the battle song!!!” Blinky yelled at Krel. The prince pulled out his boombox.
“This is the perfect battle song.” The king in waiting pressed the play button with a grin.
“I DON’T GIVE A DAMN ‘BOUT MY REPUTATION!!!” The boom box played.
The battle was on. The citizens of Arcadia, both magical and nonmagical rose a battle cry and ran forwards towards the shadow army. Jim at the front of the Arcadian Army with Toby right by his side. Those that could fly like Strickler, Charlie, Archie and the wizards, took to the skies with Merlin and Nimue leading them. Zoe and Nari ran with a small army of hedge wizards behind them. Trolls with various weapons followed. Blinky ran with Dwakstones in each hand and a bag full of them on his back. Aarrrgghhh followed with kruberas following him.
“YOU’RE LIVING IN THE PAST, IT’S A NEW GENERATION!!!”
The Arcadia citizens charged with various creative weapons like cooking tools and mothers in law. Señor Url stepped on the gas of his beloved truck Susanna, yelling angry Austrian curses while Ms. Janeth, Coach Lawrence and his fiancé, Vivian Palchuk, hitched a ride on the back of the truck. Coach and Vivian waved baseball bats with nails on them and football paint on their faces while Ms. Janeth cited a quote from Shakespeare’s Henry VI part 3. “Sound trumpets! let our bloody colours wave! And either victory, or else a grave! AAAHHHHH!!!”
“A GIRL CAN DO WHAT SHE WANTS TO DO AND THAT’S WHAT I’M GONNA DO!”
Mary and Darci charged while riding their bikes and armed with the strongest hairsprays and dry shampoos money could buy. Detective Scott drove his police car with the sirens on and his gun at hand. Aja, Krel, Luug and Varvatos ran behind them with serrators at hand. Eli followed in a hoverboard with Akaridion ninja stars at hand and Steve used his Water Magic to form a spiral of water that took him across the canal.
A typical Karen passed by in a motorcycle and wearing a Juicy Couture tracksuit, yelling at the dark wizard, “I want to speak with your manager!!!”
“AND I DON’T GIVE DAMN ‘BOUT MY BAD REPUTATION!!!”
Mordred covered his ears from listening to the dreadful battle song. “What sorcery is this!?”
Skrael and Bellroc covered their ears as well. “Blasted modern music!” Skrael yelled.
Bellroc growled. “That’s enough!” Bellroc and Skrael charged as the Shadow Army followed.
“Oh no (No no no no no no) Not me (Me me me me me me)!!!” The boombox kept playing.
The battle had begun.

What would you say is the rarest game you own a physical copy of?
i had a big answer all typed out for this but browser fucked up and deleted it >:c
im going to, probably mistakenly, base “rarity” on game prices + general knowledge and assumptions on game releases, as well as observations on stock when i go to expos/game shops
example: according to the game tracker app i use (gameye), majoras mask is the second most expensive game i own. however, pretty damn sure that game is not that rare. i see majoras mask for sale all the time. not rare, just beloved.
based on all of that though, i guess i’d say conkers bad fur day. ntsc copy, box and manual, cartridge has a damaged label because me and my dad would play the game so much, so label got rubbed out a bit from us taking it out/putting it into the n64.
after that, apparently tmnt: hyperstone heist is pretty rare? its one of the first two games i ever got, along with sonic 1. would never figure it was rare :V
after those two, ntsc skies of arcadia legends on gamecube, and pal skies of arcadia on dreamcast. i can count on one hand the times ive seen copies of those games go on sale at expos/shops, and one of those times is when i bought the pal copy lol.
for shits and giggles:
just noting that the neo geo pocket games are things my husband got when he was a kid, and the neo geo mvs games are ones that we bought at expos fairly recently. so kinda mixed ownership stuff there lol

Sega Dreamcast
I hated middle school. There’s a whole swath of memories I’d rather do without as far as the years 1999 through 2002 are concerned. There is, however, one memory I hold near and dear to my heart during this time frame. After reading about it in magazines and being really excited for it, my mother took me to Toys’R’Us one evening to get me a Sega Dreamcast. We brought that puppy home with a copy of Sonic Adventure, hooked it up, fired it up, and took it all in. As the opening cinematic played on my TV, Mum said “It’s like playing a movie!”
Boy, if we only knew what games would go on to look like now.
The Dreamcast was, and to this day remains, my all time favorite console. It’s the swan song of a company that was perhaps a bit too ambitious for its own good, a marvel of gaming technology many years ahead of its time, and home to some of the best and most unique games to ever come out.
At the time of its release, the Dreamcast was the most graphically powerful console on the market. Sony’s Playstation boasted 32-bit graphics, and the Nintendo 64 had double that, at -wait for it- 64 bits. Dreamcast had double of that: 128 bits of beautiful graphics, thanks to the GD-ROM, a proprietary disc format born from squeezing every bit of memory out of a regular old CD as was physically possible, before DVDs and Blu-Ray became as ubiquitous as they are today.
Even the method of memory storage was unlike its competitors; the standard memory card for the Dreamcast was the Visual Memory Unit (VMU), a cross between a memory card and a Gameboy that let you manage data and download minigames to extend the functionality of many games. The only other thing like it that I can think of being made is Sony’s Pocketstation, and that never saw the light of day outside of Japan. You would not believe the number of button-cell batteries I burned through caring for Chao on the go.
Of course, all of the fancy tech and cool gadgets wouldn’t amount to much if the games on offer weren’t fun at all. Tiger’s Game.Com bragged of being a versatily console and handheld device, but the games for it all stank like a fragrant dog poop laying on the sidewalk on a hot Floridian summer day. Thankfully, fun games were something the Dreamcast had no shortage of, even in the brief few years that it was on the market, a slew of which I’d like to bring attention to.
Sonic Adventure 1 & 2
Maybe they haven’t aged as well as I’d like to think, but DAYUM if these weren’t some fun games back in the day. Sonic has always struggled with 3D, but the first attempts at true 3D Sonic games remain quite novel. The first Sonic Adventure had different play styles for each character, some of which were great (Sonic and Gamma, for me at least), others...not so much (the less said about Big, the better), in addition to, for its time, an intricate plot with each character’s story intertwining and playing out differently depending on which character you’re playing as.
Sonic Adventure 2, meanwhile, streamlined the gameplay and improved upon some of the first game’s flaws, cutting out the non-platforming related stages (aside from the treasure hunting stages, which are a touch better than in the first game). It’s story was also very compelling, being one of the darkest storylines in the entire series; government conspiracies, weapons of mass destruction, fucking murder! Maybe that’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but I think we can all agree that SA2 handled “dark and gritty” a lot better than Shadow the Hedgehog’s stand-alone game.
Both games also featured a mini-game that could prove to be just as addicting, if not more so, than the games proper: Chao Gardens. Chao were little, adorable water monsters that players could raise like virtual pets, their popularity likely owed in part to the ubiquity of other virtual pets like Tamagotchi near the end of the millennium, as well as how easy-going and casual raising a Chao was compared to a Digi-Pet that would not wait for you to clean its shit up: you can enter and leave Chao Gardens freely, and you wouldn’t have to worry of your Chao dying of neglect in your absence. There’s also very deep mechanics at work for raising Chao, with their growth and evolution depending heavily on how well you raise them, what animals you give them, and what fruits you feed them, all so you can have them participate in races. The aforementioned VMU also expanded Chao functionality considerably, letting you raise them anywhere you wanted.
Shenmue
My relationship with Shenmue, these days, is very much that of a love-hate relationship. On the one hand, Shenmue popularized two aspects of gaming today that I loathe; Quick-Time Events, and over-blown game budgets (this game would’ve had to be bought by every DC owner TWICE before it could break even). On the other hand, there’s no denying that this game was a labor of love by Yu Suzuki. The attention to detail in Ryo Hazuki’s hometown of Yokosuka is staggering. Everything you can imagine can be interacted with, down to the last dresser drawer in Ryo’s house. Every resident of Yokosuka was unique from the others and had their own behaviors that they would go through, unlike every other NPC in the town, or other games for that matter. The story may be a tad formulaic, and most of the voice work left something to be desired, but the world of Shenmue was one that was very fun to explore.
Plus, this game introduced me to Space Harrier. If that’s not a good thing, you tell me what is.
Jet Set Radio
I had to convince my mother this game wouldn’t turn me into a graffiti-painting delinquent. It was a hard sell, but it paid off, and boy am I glad it did.
Jet Set Radio is very much unlike other games, then and today even. This was the game that helped to popularize cel-shaded graphics; the thick black outlines around the character models made this game look like an anime come to life, and eventually paved the way for the wicked-awesome graphics we see today from Arc System Works with Guilty Gear XRD and Dragonball FighterZ. The idea of playing a roller-blading hooligan throwing tags around the city and evading the police was also unique, and kept players on their toes as techno music accompanies their shenanigans. The game was a bit on the short side, but was challenging and fun enough that multiple playthroughs were warranted.
Making my own graffiti tags was also quite the timesink.
Phantasy Star Online
I may be a late bloomer to the Phantasy Star series, but it has become one very dear to me for helping me meet some of my closest friends (Hi, Tara!).
Phantasy Star was a series of JRPGs by Sega meant to compete with other big franchises like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. The original PSO, on the other hand, is an online multiplayer dungeon crawler that would change the course of the series from that point forward. As interstellar colonists investigating mysterious phenomena on an alien planet, players would delve into unique locals with characters they would create themselves to slay monsters, collect valuable items, and unravel the mysteries of the planet Ragol.
The original PSO is also very notable for its attempt to break the language barrier with a unique conversation system. While good ol’ fashioned keyboards remained in vogue, players also had the option of constructing sentences to transmit to other players in the area or party in those players’ native languages. Using this system, you could send a message saying “Help! This dragon is too powerful!”, and your friend in Japan would read it as “助けて!この龍は強すぎる!” It may not have seen much use, since players are more likely to congregate and play with those that can speak a common language fluently, but it was very kind of Sega to provide the option.
One thing that gets me straight in the feels is something from the original beta trailer for this game: “The world of Phantasy Star Online lasts for an eternity!” It is not uncommon for trailers and developers to hype games up with hyperbole (just ask Peter Molyneaux), but this is a statement that has held true for PSO! Even after the last official server for the last iteration of PSO shut down in 2008, private servers continue to run the game to this day, ensuring that the world of PSO truly remains eternal. Even with a proper sequel Phantasy Star Online 2 proving to be a pop culture staple in Japan, the original PSO remains one of the most beloved and enduring MMOs in history.
Skies of Arcadia
I’ve got friends who would skin my hide and leave me to hang like the Predator if I didn’t mention this.
Just about every console since the NES has a JRPG, and the Dreamcast is no exception. While Phantasy Star shifted towards MMO territory, those hoping for a sweeping single-player adventure still had Skies of Arcadia. As the daring sky pirate Vyse and his motley crew of adventurers, players fought to stop an evil empire from awakening an ancient evil while flying across a world of floating continents in a kickass airship. This game is among the most challenging JRPGs in the genre; a clever mind and strategic acumen are needed to survive battles with other pirates, monsters, and rival airships. The world of the game is also incredibly beautiful; I personally think it has much in common with Castle in the Sky, my favorite Hayao Miyazaki film. The soundtrack compliments the game incredibly, and is a joy to listen to by itself.
---
There are plenty of other games that made the Dreamcast incredible, but this article is long enough as it is, so I’ll have to give those games their proper due later. Suffice to say, though, the Dreamcast is a historical console that remains one of the most beloved in the history of the medium, not only by myself, but by hundreds of thousands of gamers the world over. It may have only been on the market for a few years, but it is said that the brightest stars are the ones that burn out the quickest.
And make no mistake, the Dreamcast is one of the brightest stars there ever was.

Dreamcast Fan Art Showcases Retro Classics in an Awesome Exploded Display
April 30, 2020 9:19 AM EST
If you were lucky enough to own a Dreamcast then you will have experienced some of video game’s most iconic and beloved titles. Even though the console had a very short life span of only a few years and subsequently Sega’s last home gaming console, many fans around the world considered the console ahead of its time and count the retro system as one of the best. Dreamcast fan and artist Pierre Roussel has taken this treasured console and put his own spin on it while also exhibiting some of the many classic games that found their home on the system.
In Pierre’s Dreamcast artwork, he has creatively sectioned off four levels as we get a look inside the 1999 gaming system in his exploded concept. Those familiar with Dreamcast games won’t need a grand tour of all the video game characters brought to life that is shattered around each platform inside Pierre’s Dreamcast vision but for those who don’t recognize them all, here’s a quick list: Skies of Arcadia, Powerstone, Grandia 2, Sonic Adventure, Ready 2 Rumble, Ikaruga, Shenmue, Space Channel 5, Phantasy Star Online v2, Crazy Taxi, Soul Calibur, Seaman and Jet Grind Radio. If I missed any out, please let me know!
I think one of my personal favorites, which is pretty hard as there are so many good games all for different reasons, is Crazy Taxi. You wouldn’t believe the number of hours I spent in that game trying to get the highest score by performing ridiculous stunt moves and picking up anyone I could while also trying to keep them in the car with my horrendous driving. At night I still hear “Hey, hey, hey! Ready to have some fun? I got some kicking music, and I’m ready to see you drive! Get those coins out of your pocket, throw ’em in the machine, and let’s get started! CRAZY TAXI!”
Pierre has created a wonderful nostalgic memory with his creative talents in which any Dreamcast fan would be proud to have framed on the wall in their home. Thankfully, Pierre and his wife run an Etsy page so this beauty can be yours for the reasonable price of $19 where you can show it off to all your friends (once quarantine is over of course) If Dreamcast art really doesn’t tickle your pickle, Pierre has other artworks up his sleeve. How about an Xbox 360 exploded art piece? If that doesn’t cut it there’s also some really cool PlayStation 1 and Nintendo 64 prints too.
Last year you may have seen Bethesda’s fully customized Sega Dreamcast that runs Rage 2 in one of their social media giveaways but to be honest, I much prefer the original design – simple and clean, that’s the Dreamcast I remember and love. If you still play on your Dreamcast and why the hell wouldn’t you be, Retro-Bit is working on a new Dreamcast controller aiming to be released later this year. Even though I personally think the original controller is perfect how it is, the new features included allows you to have it wired or wireless which I guess is a nifty concept. The “new and improved” controller will have repositioned triggers, a six-button layout, and an altered analog stick, as well as the D-pad and analog sticks, giving it a new and modern twist – which kind of defeats the purpose in my opinion but each to their own.
You can check out Pierre’s Instagram for a closer look at all of his illustrations that include the likes of Dungeons and Dragons art, Cyberpunk, World of Warcraft, and many other fantasy-themed concepts. You’ll also find one or two cat pictures in there, too – did you expect anything less?

Ok, but what about someone slipping Lumiere a love potion meant for Plumette?? And now Lumiere is even MORE in love with her (IS THAT POSSIBLE!?) and whoever was pining over Plumette is just... SOL??? (idk, man, I need to lay off the coffee)
HOLY MOTHERFUCKING SHIT nobody ever TOLD me that this prompt was POSSIBLE. i was about to go to bed but GUESS WHO’S WRITING FANFIC NOW, BITCHES
“I don’t want the child,” saysAgathe, again. She stands against the churchyard steps, confusion evident inher tilted eyebrows and blank eyes, watching the woman babbling on before her.
“You always do,” says thewoman.
Agathe’s eyes are very blank and very calm. The village woman does not know how much danger she is in.
“It’s a witch-thing, innit? And I have a babe. And I have a demand,” says the woman. “And it will only take aminute of your time—why, I’m sure you have loads of the potions in yourpockets, just crawling with toads and newts-eyes and such-on….”
Agathe blinks, quietly. All that isin her pockets is owl feathers.
The woman sighs. “Fine. Do it forthe justice, right? You witches like justice. Isn’t that why you cursed all ofthem, then?” Her hand waves toward the village, the forest, the palace—thepalace where, as Agathe knows, Lumiere is at this moment sitting in his room, nursing a cold. He is trying to tell jokes to Plumette through a stuffed-upnose. He makes his darling laugh as she curls up beside him on the bed; and Plumettedoesn’t care if she gets sick too, for all she wants is to giggle with herlove.
“Justice,” says the woman, grabbingAgathe’s arm, and the enchantress’s attention is drawn back to this moment. Amoment which, Agathe thinks, is lasting forever.
“He’s gone gallivanting off withthat girl,” says the woman, bitter as a sour apple. “She’s lured him off, withher Parisian wiles. He’s lost his wholesomeness beside her! How can youstand for that?!”
Agathe checks in on the girl’s Parisianwiles. Plumette is currently engaged in putting marshmallows into Lumiere’s hotcocoa. She’s trying to poke them into a smiley face for him.
“It’s time he loves me again,” hisses the woman.“I was his first.”
You are lucky you are not mylast, thinks Agathe. Thereis a broken musket buried deep in the forest near her hovel. It was once aman.
“So?” The woman shoves forward herchild—a little girl, only just in skirts, with no idea of what her mother begsfor. “A child. A love potion. You like love, don’t you?”
Agathe does like love. And thechild would probably like to see an owl. And the wheedling woman has her pinnedagainst the church.
“Here,” she says, and fetches intoher deepest pocket. She pulls out a jar. “Oh, no—not that one—that’s my jam.”She pulls out another. “Here. Look away.”
The woman looks at her askance, fora moment. Begrudgingly, she turns her eyes away.
The child—little Crevette, daughter of the war widow, with a papa killed in the faraway gunfire—stareswith big, brown eyes as Agathe’s face glows gold, then disappears. TheEnchantress peers out, her hands glowing as she gestures over the small bottle. Its contents turn purple—then red—then a hot, rich burgundy. It looks likesummer wine. It looks like just-crushed grapes.
Agathe’s face returns, and shesmiles at the child. Takes Crevette’s hand, with cautious fingers, fingers thatleave no sense of touch. She hands the jar to the woman.
“Be careful,” she says. “It isheady with marjoram.”
The woman is gone without sayinggood-bye.
Lumiere welcomes her in, of course. He always welcomes anyone in.
He even remembers her name—Puce Enervant—though it’s been many, many years since he last saw her. They discuss what have become common affairs around the village—the way the curse lay across the houses; the enchantment of forgetting the lure of the palace. Puce’s mouth is very tight, and wicked, and she beams at Lumiere as she pushes the potion toward him.
“To help you with your cold.”
“Madame! You fill me with affection.” He has a hazy, dazed memory of kissing Puce once—at an ice cream social, when he was about fourteen—but it’s been so long he is sure she forgot. She was married, after all. “How is your child?”
“Oh.” Puce sneers. “Not much concern of mine. Just gets in the way and stays silent. Once I live here, I can hand her off to another of the village girls.”
“You can—pardonez-moi?”
“Once I live here.” Puce grins at him; or, at least, she widens her mouth and shows her teeth. He is spreading the potion on toast with his long, thin fingers, and is momentarily distracted by how small and wicked she looks. Like a knife out in a meadow. Like a spider, ready to bite.
“Madame. You know I love another.”
“Do you, now?” Smile tighter and wider still. Lumiere is concerned about her digestion. Looking so frightening must have an affect on the stomach.
Puce says, “Don’t tell me you mean that Parisian wench. Wicked, wicked. Not worth your time. Probably the source of your cold, I shouldn’t wonder!”
Thoughts of being kind to Puce Enervant quench into smoke in his head. He rises, and his hands are shaking. “Pardonez-moi? Do not repeat that.”
“Parisian wench. Not worth your time. Go on, have your toast.”
He bites down on it, and his voice shakes. A sneeze clouds the effect, but he can still be threateningly suave. “Plumette is the most beautiful creature I have ever witnessed, and the kindest, brightest, sweetest, dearest, most heavenly soul to ever exist. Our toast is at an end, Madame.”
“Yours is.” Puce sits back, and grins. “Now I just sit and wait for you to love me, Parisian boy.”
She makes sure she is right within his line of vision. Right where he can see her. Right where she can be his one, true, fair, poisoned love.
And it is right then—with an overpowering sneeze that can be heard halfway to Austria—that Lumiere’s head bangs onto the table, reorients itself, and witnesses Plumette as she enters the room.
Mon dieu. The heavens opened wide. He forgets her name for a moment because all he can grasp is that here he is seeing the one and only true point to the universe. All of history and time and men dying in battles and women going to witches and little girls seeing magic has all led up to this: a woman with a feather-duster asking him if he wants more marshmallows.
He is dizzy with the magic of it.
“No! No! Me! It was me,” hisses—the other. Whoever. That thing. It’s not the divine creature in front of him. It isn’t the kiss of the entire pantheon of gods, as this heavenly goddess in front of him completely is.
Plumette is not entirely shocked when he throws himself onto his knees in front of her. The vowing his eternal devotion and swearing (upon what she likes, though nothing whatever is worthy of her eyes) that he will serve her forever is fairly de rigueur. It is like Lumiere to kiss his way entirely up one arm, and across her neck, and down the other arm without stopping, breathing heady phrases that involve ‘heaven’ and ‘divine’ and ‘more beautiful than the morning air.’ The combination of all these things at once, though, is rather startling.
She glances at Puce, though her gaze is somewhat encumbered by the worshiping maître d’ at her feet. “Who are you?”
Puce scowls and gathers her things. “Nobody, apparently,” she says. Lumiere nods enthusiastically and returns to Plumette.
Puce stomps the long way home. She doesn’t want to see Crevette. She doesn’t want to see Agathe. She wants to bite the witch’s face, and scream that Lumiere got away.
Lumiere, again, loves only Plumette. It should be an easy ending.
But love potions are never easy.
Plumette enjoys this romantic streak, but after three days she worries. It is like Lumiere to adore her, but now he does it to such extent he lets everything else slide, lets it flick away as if it doesn’t matter. He barely remembers Cogsworth’s name. Belle and Adam have been eating off paper napkins, too intimidated to ask for silverware. Every waking moment—and many of her sleeping ones—find Lumiere at her side, asking how to exalt her, how he is unworthy of her graciousness. It isn’t wholesome. He doesn’t laugh. He only wants to love her, without looking to himself.
On the third day, she pins him to the bed. He gasps from ecstasy.
“Mon amour! Mon amour. Non, don’t pass out.” He can’t bear it when she loves him back. She is too perfect, too flawless, too divine. She shakes him and he almost cries.
“How can I serve you, beloved beyond beloved?”
“Mon dieu, stop it.” She has one knee on his chest to hold him down. She flicks away his kisses as he reaches for her arms. “Lumiere? Cheri? You know I love you—”
“How can one love a gnat, a flea, a speck of sand—”
She puts one hand over his mouth. He is absolutely going to faint, but keeps talking anyway.
“—I am nothing! Nothing! And you are the skies, and bigger than the skies, and I live only to adore you—”
Plumette sighs and tries to giggle, but he looks too sleep-deprived to make it fun. She removes her hand. “Serve me by staying quiet as I speak, mon cheri.”
He is instantly a grave. She isn’t even sure he’s breathing. She prods his chest for a heartbeat, and is shocked by how loud it is. It seems twice its normal size.
“Lumiere. My darling. Lumiere. Why this sudden intoxication? You were romantic before—everything I ever wanted—but now, now you drain yourself to talk to me. I fell in love with you, Lumiere. Not a man who never laughed because he would not dare to meet my eyes.”
“Your eyes are gemstones lifted from Arcadia’s fonts—” he begins, and she stabs him with a finger.
“Lumiere! Lumiere. I want you to laugh, again. I want you to make fun of Cogsworth, and encourage Cadenza, and plan matchmaking trips for the Prince and his Princess. I want you to piggy-back with Chip again. I want you to love me, and love life, and love everything besides. And kiss my neck, and tell a joke.”
“That seems impossible now,” he breathes. “Ever since I saw you, my world has been nothing but you.”
“You’ve seen me every day for at least fifteen years, ma moitié.” Another spasm of reverence from Lumiere. “Why now? Why so much?”
Lumiere tries to think, though only for the sake of the goddess currently balanced on his chest. His thoughts tend to flutter off in the so soft, so light, so sacred, exquisite fairy, sublime pixie sent from the other end of heaven direction, but he tries to be mundane.
“Toast.” How strange he used to find food appealing! He hasn’t eaten for two days. It seemed so base, compared to Plumette.
“Pardonez-moi, mon coeur?” Oh sacred woman! All he is is a beating heart. He tries to bring his thoughts around to anything else that might please her.
“Toast. I had some toast. With jam brought by….the woman.” He doesn’t hold onto other people, now. He can’t really remember their names.
“Puce?”
“Say ‘Plumette’ instead. It is the only name that matters.”
“That woman brought you jam? And then you saw me, and fell in love?”
“You only speak truth. It is exquisite.”
She kisses him, then, half to shut him up and half because he is beloved, even as an idiot. He truly does faint, then. A speck of sand in the sway of an ocean.
Plumette goes to find Puce Enervant.
The palace maid doesn’t really know her way around the village, but she finds it easy enough; the neighbors sigh and point to Puce’s house, tumbled down at the edge of the village. An angry house for an angry woman.
“What do you want,” spits Puce Enervant.
Plumette looks around the crumbling parlor. It is cold and empty and angry. “Don’t you have a child?”
“Not anymore.” Puce kicks up her feet and takes out her pipe. “Witch got her. Didn’t want her, anyway. Strange child. Mostly mute. Didn’t play like a kid.”
“And do you play?”
“I used to.” Puces face is wistful. “Everyone used to want me. I had thirty boys on a string. But the war came, and I can’t have anyone now.”
Plumette looks around the room. It’s true that the war came—but in Puce’s case, it seems that life went. She doesn’t have any signs of a life of her own: no pastimes, no plants, no crafts, no indication that she does anything besides sit and moan her dead flirtations. Plumette is struck with pity: besides stringing along the village boys, Puce had nothing better to do, and never learned real love.
Plumette’s hand brushes before her face. “I need a favor of you.”
“You have everything I want. A lover, respect, attention.” I have a heart you do not know you need, thinks Plumette. “If I favor you, I get nothing at all.”
“I need you to kiss Lumiere.”
Puce drops her pipe. “Is this a joke?”
“Non, mademoiselle. True love’s kiss.”
The atmosphere in the cold, dead room is very charged. “And he’ll be mine again?”
“You’ll have back whatever you gave him,” Plumette says honestly.
“Love,” says Puce, and her eyebrows draw together. She thinks for only moments. “Yes, love, yes. Let me have Lumiere. Bring me to my boy.”
Your boy, thinks Plumette, fuming, but she leads Puce to the palace. The only way to save Lumiere is to hand him to another.
He doesn’t want to, but he’ll do anything for the diamond of the angels. The flower that Eden kept. The end of the world, because the world would end without her.
“Will he talk like that to me?” Puce’s eyes are hungry. Lumiere’s eyes are fixed on Plumette as he reels off his names for her.
“He has more than enough to share.” Plumette is nervous; her hands brush his. She needs Puce to kiss Lumiere—but what if it goes wrong, what if he really falls in love with her?
He will die if he does not laugh, does not eat, does not mock Cogsworth as he always does. Plumette tries to be brave. “My darling, my one darling. Kiss her, once, for me.”
He does. He doesn’t try. But Plumette asked him to, so he does.
Stars burst across his vision. Marjoram weighs heavy in the air. And hearts-ease, too, and hot-wine burgundy. Puce’s lips are hungry against his.
He reels back, crying from how strong it was, and blinks away his tears. He hasn’t cried for three days, and his lips feel very dry, and he is suddenly immensely hungry.
Before him stand Puce and Plumette. Puce’s eyes are shut. Her lips move soundlessly. She is a village woman, one he kissed once, a long, long time ago.
Beside her stands Plumette. And she is so beautiful—and so heavenly—and a part of the rest of his world, like Cogsworth and Cadenza and food and dining and serving the Prince—that he has to burst out laughing.
Plumette bursts into tears. “Mon amour? You’re you again?”
“What, because I can’t hold a candle to you?” He is smoking a little, too. “Ma chérie, I can love both you and a brilliant joke.”
He is all right again. He is Lumiere again. He takes Plumette in his arms and kisses her.
“What of Puce?” In the corner she sways, her eyes locked tight. All her anger has vanished from her face; she looks like she is dreaming.
Plumette sniffs her breath, and guides her to the door. “I thought she could draw the poison out of you, because she needs the love herself. I hope she finds a mirror. And some happiness of her own.”
“You are infinitely wise, my darling.” He tries to pick her up, and fails. He is not strong enough. He kisses her instead.
“You are infinitely endearing. Do you want marshmallows in your chocolate?”
“You are the jewel of the world,” says Lumiere, and bows with extravagant courtesy.
Down in the hollow, Agathe shows around her new owl. Little Crevette, with big brown eyes, and tawny feathers. It screams from joy and flaps its wings.
Puce wanders by, her eyes fast shut. Agathe takes her by the hand and leads her to the fallen tree. Places hot tea in her cold hands. Whispers a spell over her, and lets dead leaves fall.
At least she cured the candle’s cold. That’s all she ever meant to do.
