Cameo of Rainbreakers Live Performance Jaks Skegness 2018. Rainbreakers are back to set Skegness alight once again. This year they headline Saturday in Jaks; the stage organised by Blues Matters. The venue that is dark, moody hot had the venue that has seen amazing nights we all still talk about the night Larry Miller set Jaks ablaze with his music. The anticipation was high amongst the many who have heard The Rainbreakers play live before. Into the mix and those who just came to see what the fuss was about or party and drink into Sunday morning.

The band was on fire full of energy as the band from Shrewsbury blended the music to create a music fuelled party atmosphere. Having spoken to members of the audience many just popped in for five minutes and now determined to stay to the end. This was no surprise to me as having been captivated by the sound since I first heard and reviewed in 2015 Blood Not Brass. 

What is Rainbreakers sound? What makes then stand-out on a crowded circuit? They have stretched the blues from the Mississippi Delta, up to Chicago across to the sun-drenched West Coast and sound drenched in the seventies full of soul. Musicians ready to conquer the here and now.  A quartet mix power with subtlety. A rhythm section drummer Sam Edwards and bassist Peter Adams lay down the scaffolding of their brand of Blues-rock. Guitar work from Jack Cooper bending the notes as vocals are delivered by Ben Edwards. The unit is tight and the live sound electric.

Tonight in Jaks they came set-up and allowed their music to conquer. That is exactly what they did. Saturday in Jaks was a happy place to be as they played music that made you get up and dance, smile and be happy with tracks from the second EP; Rise Up. This is what Jaks as we all rose up as one and enjoyed the moments they played a storming set, to be remembered long after Jaks falls silent. The Rainbreakers were the last Saturday night headliners to play the small stage in Jaks.

Currys, Nuneaton

Logo date: 1988-2007

Closing when the store lease ended in July, this branch of Currys in Nuneaton may well have been the final red-and-white branded store still standing. Other branches in Skegness and Ayr that were late to rebrand were finally given the three-in-one treatment last year (2018) which saw the classic logo ditched and the stores converted to the favoured mix of Currys, PC World and Carphone Warehouse. You almost have to admire the hubris in calling this branch in Nuneaton a ‘superstore’ on the signage; it was actually quite pokey inside.

Red and white was very much the colour of major chain electronics retailers in the UK for a time. Currys, Dixons* and Comet all had red and white branding through the 1980s and 1990s, which no doubt was fairly confusing for the consumer.

A red-on-navy rebrand introduced back in 2007 to replace this look didn’t last long, mainly because management soon realised that ‘currys’ basically became illegible in some newspaper ads and on their store signage when viewed from a distance. The red was changed to white within a year. This made spotting stores with that original 2007 rebranded logo quite a rare thing, and when I moved to Lincoln in 2016 I was pleased to see the local branch was still sporting that original red-on-navy 2007 look, next door to a retro PC World. They subsequently downsized to just the one unit and took the current branding.

Google Streetview shows that the Nuneaton branch also sported retro department signage on the outside as recently as 2017 but this had been removed by 2019.

NB. You may also be intrigued to know there was an abandoned PC World rebrand back in 2007...

*Dixons took over Currys in 1984 but elected to keep both brands; they both had red and white branding beforehand anyhow!

Concern for Cleo, Rebel Rose and Love Rat Louis...

Rounding up a week in Hollyoaks (8th-12th October 2018)

Mental health has always been a hot topic for Hollyoaks so it was only fitting that the show marked ‘World Mental Health Day’ this week with a special episode. The episode focussed on Cleo McQueen, who over the last few months has been battling with bulimia. 

As the week began, the McQueen’s were busy preparing for the double wedding of Mercedes and Russ and Cleo and Joel, seemingly obvious to the fact that Cleo was wincing at every bonkers idea Mercy and co were conjuring up. Knowing how much Cleo was dreading the idea of a double wedding, Joel suggested that they run off and marry in secret, much to Cleo’s delight. However, when Nana and Goldie announced plans for a trip to Skegness for Mercy and Cleo’s hen do, they were forced to come clean, leaving the family furious. They eventually made up and threw an impromptu party for Cleo at The Dog, but Cleo was soon sent into despair by a message from Pete...

The next episode focussed solely on Cleo, and her skewed perception about how her wedding day had gone. As Cleo spoke to Farrah, she painted a picture of a perfect day, explaining how she’d gone for a jog that morning, had some breakfast and then walked down the aisle to marry the love of her life. However, the reality of the day was far more sinister, as we discovered that Cleo had woken at 4 am to go for a lengthy run before purging after forcing down a bacon sandwich. As Cleo pinned herself into her now oversized wedding dress, we discovered the toll that her illness had taken on her body as her lips appeared cracked and her thinning hair fell out into her hands. At the church, Cleo struggled to stay standing and she collapsed in pain during her vows. Cleo tried to claim that she had simply fainted, however, Farrah was quick to correct her, telling her that she’d had a heart attack...

As Cleo recovered in hospital, Joel looked for someone to blame and Farrah initially found herself in the firing line when he realised that Cleo had not been attending her counselling appointments. However, he soon found a new target when he discovered that Pete had made contact with Cleo the day before the wedding. Deciding to visit Pete, Joel pretended to be a vicar to gain access to Pete’s cell and beat him up. However, back at the hospital, Cleo’s health took a turn for the worst and she was rushed into theatre in an attempt to stop some internal bleeding. Thankfully, Cleo pulled through, but Joel was left to answer some difficult questions when he arrived at the hospital. As Cleo demanded to know where Joel had been all day, he was forced to admit that he’d gone to see Pete. Noticing Joel’s bruised knuckles, Cleo quickly worked out what he’d done and berated Joel for being so stupid. Things intensified further when Cleo pointed out that her illness had only started thanks to Joel’s relationship with Sienna. Joel was left devastated when Cleo decided that she couldn’t recover whilst they were still together and insisted that their relationship was over. 

Meanwhile, little Rose became the latest Hollyoaks resident to turn to the dark side this week as her bad behaviour drove Tegan to distraction. It seems that ever since she found out that Tony and Diane are her biological parents, Rose has been playing up, and Tegan has felt both unwilling and unable to discipline her.  Things came to a head when Rose demanded the day off school so she could have a pamper session at the salon (she’s four!) and Tegan reluctantly agreed, despite misgivings from friends, Kim and Jesse. At the salon, Rose’s behaviour was no better and it was only the arrival of Diane that got the little girl to settle down and behave. As Tegan watched Diane bring Rose into line, she made the heartbreaking decision that Rose would be better off with Tony and Diane and later dropped her daughter off at the Hutchinson’s. Over the days that followed, Tegan spiralled out of control, getting drunk and staying out all night, and Leela eventually made her see that she had made the wrong decision by giving Rose up. However, when Tegan went to The Hutch to collect Rose, she was devastated when she heard her call Diane ‘Mummy’ and left the restaurant in tears. 

Elsewhere, Louis was back from Hong Kong and it became almost immediately clear that he was hiding something. We didn’t have to wait long to find out what, when a woman named Martine arrived on his doorstep. It seems that Louis has been a bit of a naughty boy whilst he was away. Not only has he cheated on Leela, but he’s secretly got married, to Simone’s sister, no less! To make matters even more complicated, Louis rekindled his romance with Simone this week and his two worlds soon collided when Martine arrived at Simone’s and revealed that she’d got married. Simone was horrified that her sister had married ‘a stranger she met on the plane’ whilst Louis desperately tried to get rid of his new wife. Just how is he going to wriggle out of this one?!

In other news this week, Russ paid Jack to do some snooping on Sylver, still convinced that Mercedes was cheating on him. Finally, Grace came up with a risky plan to get rid of Glenn, but needed Roxy on side. Unfortunately, Roxy wasn’t too impressed with Grace’s idea and refused to get involved, stating that the plan was just too dangerous. However, Roxy was moved by Simone, Courtney and Grace’s emotional pleas for help and agreed to get involved. The plan to bring down Glenn once and for all is on...

5 Things We Learned This Week:

1. Inset days are easy to forget. Rose was off school on Monday due to an inset day whilst Mercedes slipped off to meet Sylver, telling Russ that she was going to the school to drop some lunch money off to Bobby. But Bobby and Rose go the same school. Okay, Russ eventually worked out that Mercedes was lying, but given that he also has a son at that school, you’d think he would have worked it out much quicker than he did! 

2. It’s amazing what you can return from Hong Kong with. Tales of amazing new experiences, sexy underwear from duty free and a wife. But, does anyone else get the impression that a terrible fate may be about to befall Louis, what with him turning him into even more of a love rat by stringing 3 women along? The whole thing smacks of what they did with Rhys Ashworth a few years back; make a character thoroughly unlikeable so the audience don’t care when they’re killed off. 

3. Kids grow up so fast these days. Only 4 years old and little Rose is already demanding pampering sessions. Amazing how she managed to read the sign, too, and know exactly what was on offer!

4. Hollyoaks still thinks it’s 2008! What was Sally doing bringing Cleo some DVDs to watch in hospital? Surely a tablet would have been better? Would Cleo even have had the means to watch the DVDs?

5. Hollyoaks really don’t know what to do with Jack! Ever since Frankie died, he’s turned into an interfering busy body, poking his nose into everyone’s business. Give Jack a proper storyline please, Hollyoaks!

Millions of fake cigarettes are entering the UK and undermining efforts to cut smoking, councils have warned.

Herefordshire, Lincolnshire and Durham county councils in 2018 found illegal stashes of cigarettes behind shop walls, in sweet boxes and toilets.

Fake or “bootlegged” tobacco products are sold on the black market to avoid paying duty, the Local Government Association (LGA) said.

The illegal trade diverts £2.1bn a year in tax from HM Revenue and Customs.

In one case, Peterborough man Karwan Salim Ahamed was sentenced last month after using fake Facebook profiles to sell illegal cigarettes on the social media site’s “Lincolnshire + Boston + Spalding + Skegness + Sleaford + Kirton + Heckington etc” group.

Mr Ahamed was ordered to do 200 hours community service and pay £5,000 in costs.

The LGA, which represents 370 councils in England and Wales, is calling on the government to increase fines and penalties for those found guilty of trading in fake or tax-free cigarettes and tobacco.

In another sentencing in Durham Crown Court last week, a 72-year-old man was ordered to pay a £35,000 fine after he tried to sell one box of 20 Brass cigarettes for £3.50 in a sting operation. He was caught with more than 100,000 illegal cigarettes.

In a separate case in Herefordshire, about 81,000 illegal cigarettes were seized from three shops in December. Officers uncovered remote controlled hydraulic hiding places, full of illegal tobacco, in the walls and floors of the shops.

Trading standards officers have previously found illegal hauls hidden in toilet cisterns, in boxes of sweets, behind extractor fans and in ceiling lights.

Signs of a fake

Fake or counterfeit cigarettes are made to look like well-known UK brands, but typically have foreign health advisories without picture warnings on the packaging.

“Non-duty paid” or bootlegged cigarettes are UK brands usually brought into the country from abroad and sold illegally.

Cigarettes and tobacco bought at duty-free shops are for personal use only.

Millions of fake cigarettes are entering the UK and undermining efforts to cut smoking, councils have warned.

Herefordshire, Lincolnshire and Durham county councils in 2018 found illegal stashes of cigarettes behind shop walls, in sweet boxes and toilets.

Fake or “bootlegged” tobacco products are sold on the black market to avoid paying duty, the Local Government Association (LGA) said.

The illegal trade diverts £2.1bn a year in tax from HM Revenue and Customs.

In one case, Peterborough man Karwan Salim Ahamed was sentenced last month after using fake Facebook profiles to sell illegal cigarettes on the social media site’s “Lincolnshire + Boston + Spalding + Skegness + Sleaford + Kirton + Heckington etc” group.

Mr Ahamed was ordered to do 200 hours community service and pay £5,000 in costs.

The LGA, which represents 370 councils in England and Wales, is calling on the government to increase fines and penalties for those found guilty of trading in fake or tax-free cigarettes and tobacco.

In another sentencing in Durham Crown Court last week, a 72-year-old man was ordered to pay a £35,000 fine after he tried to sell one box of 20 Brass cigarettes for £3.50 in a sting operation. He was caught with more than 100,000 illegal cigarettes.

In a separate case in Herefordshire, about 81,000 illegal cigarettes were seized from three shops in December. Officers uncovered remote controlled hydraulic hiding places, full of illegal tobacco, in the walls and floors of the shops.

Trading standards officers have previously found illegal hauls hidden in toilet cisterns, in boxes of sweets, behind extractor fans and in ceiling lights.

Signs of a fake

Fake or counterfeit cigarettes are made to look like well-known UK brands, but typically have foreign health advisories without picture warnings on the packaging.

“Non-duty paid” or bootlegged cigarettes are UK brands usually brought into the country from abroad and sold illegally.

Cigarettes and tobacco bought at duty-free shops are for personal use only.
