What’re some things that inspired you to write your Luckless books?

Initially, I had set out to write something to submit to an open call for novellas that Tor Books had been doing. The very, very early concept idea was "What if the opposite of The Last Unicorn?" where I was trying to imagine what kind of problems might be caused if you had too many unicorns. The Last Unicorn is one of my favorite movies/books of all time, so it was obviously a big influence on me and the tone of the story.

Gradually, it evolved into something a bit bigger than just that story seed. I think I wanted to tell a story about someone who goes through a lifetime of bad luck and to have it feel both like it was all for a reason AND to highlight that things could always be worse. Sort of a way to process tragedy and horror through an optimistic lens that doesn't outright dismiss how much it sucks to live through it all. That's how Bailey, my poor luckless son, came to be the protagonist. He's just out there doing his best but the world has other plans, and he does sometimes let that get him down but never lets it stop him, and I think that makes him heroic.

I'm sure anyone that knows me and my own life story would understand why I'd relate to writing about someone who is constantly assailed by bad luck but keeps on truckin' XD

I wanted to write something that was fun but heartfelt, that was fantasy but pointed out the absurdity of some of the common tropes, and that broke convention from the genre in other places. I wanted to build a world where the conflicts didn't have to rely on being overly gritty or bogged down with real world foils like racism and sexism and bigotry, but still pack emotional punch. I also wanted it to be diverse and character-focused, so that the personalities involved in the story drove it forward more than anything else.

lol and of course once I started worldbuilding, I built a nice sandbox to write not just Unlucky in, but a much longer saga. I like worldbuilding a LOT so there's a ton of lore for Skael that we haven't even scratched the surface on, and I look forward to getting more of the stories out there so I can share it. :) It's slow going, but I can always be encouraged to work a little faster if people show an interest ;)

The Faeling and the southmen part 2:

The moment of madness had passed and the flash had subsided. The smell of burnt flesh with the subtle tinge of burnt wood permeated the tavern room. Crouched there, i found myself in that natural instinct that forces one to consider all of one's actions and my instincts told me to keep myself still and breathless. In synchronization, my hearing peaked and I could hear the quietening sizzle of the remains of the barmaid, similar to the sound meat might make when removed from a pan.

There was a pause of 15 seconds before Hrogar broke the silence:

"What now, Skaeling?"

"Now we confirm your part of the plan"

"we know our part, Skaeling: raid the red sparrow*, steal everything and sink it. Take the cargo to the patrician"

There followed another 5 second pause, within this time my curiosity overtook my self-preservation and I shifted awkwardly to turn my head out from the corner.

*The heartland republic is often referred to as "the reds" especially in naming conventions. Many of the fleet belonging to the heartland marine ships are named "red xxxx". This comes from the bloody nature of the political history of the republic plus the heartland poppy dye that is cheap to produce.

The impact from the blast had melted the bottles behind the bar and left scorch marks where it had hit. Similarly, the barmaid now lacked a face and the blood from the wound had burnt leaving very little pooled blood and lots of smouldered viscera. All Southmen were hyper-focused on the Skaeling but were aware enough to leave hands on the table and weapons sheathed.

"The patrician requires that the ship reach the harbour, it is not to be sunk"

Hrogar spat back angrily: "They'll know it was us then, we won't be able to sail the city again!"

The Skaeling smiled slightly, her lips moving almost as if a statue could change facial expressions.

"You are an infamous raider, Hrogar. This will boost your reputation"

"Aye but it will forever anger the republic, every Southman knows to leave the reds alone. It's been like that for 200 years"

"If the Patrician's plans are executed well, the Southmen will be able to raid the reds as frequently as they may like. You are to be the first of these new bolder raiders and your legend and wealth shall be legendary as a result"

Hrogar was quiet then, his lumpy face was still and his eyes were locked on the Skaeling but I could tell he was weighing his dilemma. Finally, he spoke:

"Raid the ship, leave enough crew. We want double the price"

"Acceptable, you are informed that the red sparrow sails here in three days, three hours after sunset"

Hrogar poured some ale from his cup to the floor and spat on it (a customary confirmation of a Southmen bargain). He and his crew all rose at once and filed out of the tavern in a surprisingly sober, quiet, and collected manner.

The Skaeling stood perfectly still, unnervingly so. A lump in my throat formed as she waited a little after the last Southman exited. Then she retrieved a small metallic object from her cloak pocket. She knelt and pointed it to touch the floor, flicking the wheel, it sparked and a flame arose which caught the straw flooring. She grabbed some vodka from the shelves that she had not wrecked and began methodical pouring of the bottle so that the flame would spread across the tavern.

As she turned to exit, she stopped. My lump turned to steel and my heart pounded. She did not turn to face me but said simply:

"You must call the city watch, there is one drinking in the next tavern. It will not serve to see the docks in flames"

Then she raised her hood over her head and strode out, leaving me free to exit as flames started to spread and smoke began to fill the tavern.

Drew some of my OCs last night bc I couldn’t sleep.  They’re very gay don’t mind them. 

I don’t think I’ve posted about them here, but the one on the left is named Skael Levenwind, He’s asexual Biromantic and uses He/Him pronouns. The one on the right is named Zircon Helmunt, He’s Pansexual and agender, using He/him and they/them pronouns. 

They’re characters in an original story I’m attempting to write and have been for about 5-6 years now.

AAAAHHHH just watched the trailer and have a million thoughts on it.

All three titans have awakened with the order controlling them.

Douxie loses Nari and Archie to the order and explains why he is back.

Aja, Varvotos and Eli (who looks taller) return to earth.

Here everyone from tales of arcadia including Normana, Strickler, Barbara, Stuart and Steve are together in one location.

Properly the new trollmarket and part of Arthur's kingdom.

Here talking about the titans and their destructions located in New York, Brazil (I think) and Arcadia Oaks.

They would properly separate to take down the titans.

They would properly go for Skael first then Nari then Bellroc towards the end of the movie.

As Jim might pull excalibler from the stone and get his new set of armour from his journeys with friends.

Douxie is just so precious.

There would also be teleporting and old faces coming back who didn't appear in the trailer. (Hoping Angor and Tronos are alive as they changed the timeline).

Haven't seen James Lake Sr.

Archie not appearing much makes me think he's dead.

"And Blinky," sounds like death flags are rising around his head.

The movie would properly end with the whole world knowing every myth, fairytale and theory is real and come together.

ToA Headcanons

@honeyxmonkey You wanted some headcanons, here’s some headcanons that have been swimming around in my head.

Zoe joins Douxie/Nari/Archie in NYC/Metro City not too long after they get there. She spends three days confusing poor Nari cause while her words are harsh toward Douxie her actions say she’s not as mad as she sounds. She also tells Nari none of anything that happened is her fault. She also also spends those three days wrapped in Douxie’s hoodie and refusing to give it back to him.

Zoe and Douxie have matching tattoos, might be their initials + Archie’s or maybe a special symbol I haven’t gotten that far yet lol (And probably at some point when things have calmed down they get something to represent Nari as well)

Zoe and Douxie have been romantically together for about 500 years. They’ve been married/engaged/what have you multiple times throughout the years but the one they actually count is the one that’s attended by all their Arcadia friends. (There might also be some magic bonding involved so it’s extra meaningful) Nari is their flower girl. It’s also kind of ‘gothic’ is someways/Zoe totally wears a black dress.

Douxie opens up a new bookstore/magic shop (since I think the old one actually gets burned down at the end of Wizards) and becomes well known throughout the magical community for being a Maser Wizard. Magicals are always coming to or calling him for help. They also learn not to mess with his tiny wife.

He and Zoe may being living in the refurbished Camalot??? Haven’t decided yet cause it also doubles as the Guardians HQ but we’re def keeping it from ROTT.

Zoe’s more powerful than anyone thinks she is, partially because lightning magic is one of the more powerful magics out there but also because Douxie has helped her throughout the years to cast wandless magic (something most Hedge Wizards/Witches can’t do.)

Zoe doesn’t mind when Claire’s friends thirst over Douxie, she’s amused by it, just as long as they only look and don’t touch.

And here’s some ROTT headcanons that I’m throwing in too;

NO BODY DIES! Zoe’s A: Involved in the whole thing and B: literally slaps some sense into Jim before he tries that shit with the bombs saying that it won’t work if it doesn’t hit Skael/the titan is magic and something like bombs just won’t keep it down.

They find the stuck together pages A HELL OF A LOT SOONER and manage to free Nari sooner too. 

The Cronosphear thing probably doesn’t even come into play but I will let Jim get Excalibur/his new armor cause that’s nifty.

They somehow manage to pit Skael and Bellrock against each other/fight them long enough for Nari to be the one to fuse with the Heartstone cause you know she’s on their side and then BAM! Goddess Nari! Goddess Nari then seals her sibling away deep, deep, deep away (I personally feel the Arcane Order are demi-gods/something really powerful and just simply destroying them would cause a whole host of other problems), she heals the worst of the damages done to the earth/the government hides most of the magic that happened and everyone gets to live happily ever after with the trolls moving back from New Jersey now that the Heartstone was revived. Stricklake wedding happens, there’s lots of fluff and there was some epic magic somewhere along the way.

Also the Steve thing didn’t happen.

I came to this movie for closure and got none of it. This movie was simply not it y’all. Also gonna include how I would change the ending

So what did I like first?

QUEEN AJA ALL HAIL HER MAJESTY

Post-Puberty Eli really pulled a Neil Longbottom on us and I SUPPORT IT FULLY

Jim struggling with not having an amulet and realizing he was always a hero?? Brilliant!

Claire all the time? Queen I love her (and also her hair symbolism).

Stricklake was canon for like 5 seconds we really are ravenous for scraps.

Nari vs Skael? Amazing.

There was more mini things I liked but I currently cannot remember them.

Let’s get the elephant in the room out of the way.... the Steve pregnancy set the movie off on the wrong foot. Because it completely Steve, who’s become an integral character for the series and comedic relief. Also why are we promoting teen pregnancy???? No hate at all to mothers/fathers/children of teen pregnancies, but wouldn’t it have been prudent to teach even a metaphor for safe sex? Or better yet none of that at all, just let Aja and Steve have a happy simple reunion before the ensuing apocalypse.

Douxie and Archie felt so sidelined too. Krel as well. They just felt kind of there to pull something out of nowhere to move the plot along. Love them but not utilized. Poor Archie also just stayed with his dad when an arc in Wizards was about him breaking away and becoming his own person (dragon?).

I very much wish Strickler hadn’t died. Like poor Barbara and Jim let them have someone permanent with them.

Nomura’s death was so sudden and barely had any time to digest it. She was such a badass, she deserved more attention on her death.

Now the big problem: Trollhunter Toby. I hate it. It’s terrible. Toby was such a good character and support to Jim throughout the series and was so important. He was also at peace with being the sidekick which is rare in fiction and a really nice change that is now rendered moot. His death was so GUT WRENCHING it was horrible but perfect. And now all that emotion I felt??? Wasted. It also implied that Jim was never really the right choice, the amulet just picks the next person who walks near it. It just totally ruins everything for me.

Also Jim did you forget about Unbecoming???? Because the fandom didn’t. I didn’t. You could have done so much better. I thought you were a hero but this is not how a hero would act (IMO), passing off the responsibly to another. I thought you were supposed to shoulder the burden Jim!

How would I change the story?

Well I’d first remove the Steve pregnancy. Let him be a knight and find honour if his own. Then leave pretty much everything the same.

Except right at the end, when Jim gets the time stone instead of going ALL the way back, I would do a montage of him popping in at the various battles where people died, except Nomura. Nomura needs to die a beautiful warrior death and show off the power of the Titans. Also she died by sunlight and currently I cannot think of a way to change that. Then at Stricklers death, Future Jim manages to save him and they go hide out so Past Jim and Barbara think Strickler is dead. Then with an extra horngazel he gets Archie and his dad out of Hong Kong. At the end Future Jim could push Toby out of the way just in time and sacrifice himself.

This way Toby and Strickler survive, and Jim sacrifices himself while also not sacrificing himself? If that makes sense. Idk I just watched the movie like 20 minutes ago and I very much despise the end.

Loved the whole series right up until the end. It’s disappointing

Reaction to ‘Wizards’

There were some elements of Wizards that I was quite pleased with and others I found disappointing.

Here are some notes I took while watching it: 

“I was busy,” says the guy who was ASLEEP.

Cuckoo clock in bookstore looks like Bular’s head.

Green Knight can teleport, confirming potential parallel character to Angor Rot and Tronos Madu, both yellow-eyed assassins with teleportation and tragic backstories (later confirmed, yes, there are parallels between this character and those two besides the visual one)

Jim always tips at the cafe; yup, that sounds like Jim 

Gunmar saving Jim: irony. Is Jim going to go to the Gumm-Gumm camp now? 

Confirmation that portrait was Arthur and Guinevere and she is “gone”, presumably by magic or killed by a troll - is she dead or did she just leave? (Later confirmed, dead)

Morgana’s name is carved on the tree under Arthur’s and Guinevere’s - was she in love with Guinevere too? 

Is that Nari with Morgana and Guinevere? (Later confirmed, yes)

Stone doll Callista finds looks like Angor’s totems - same village? He said it was “Gunmar’s war” that destroyed it, and she says it was a human attack, but Angor might’ve seen it as a retaliatory attack by the humans which Gunmar’s actions had provoked?

Arthur being the one to cut off Morgana’s hand makes Merlin SLIGHTLY less of an asshole for using it in the Amulet, but a lot of this still could’ve been avoided if Merlin had been willing to shut up and listen. 

Oh, except it wasn’t Arthur who cut off Morgana’s hand the first time anyway? 

Episode 3 ends without Steve getting knocked on his back, so that scene must’ve been his sparring match with Lancelot in Episode 2 instead of keeping it an Episode 3 tradition (like how Zuko and Iroh hug in Episode 18 of each season of Avatar the Last Airbender)

Why would Douxie be grossed out at the idea of swimming naked? Swimsuits have only been around for, what, 80 years? Presumably it was a specific lack of desire to see Steve naked.

Neat take on the Lady of the Lake. 

AAARRRGGHH used to have a triple set of horns - what happened to the other two? Receded, amputated, knocked off? Also, Gunmar says AAARRRGGHH is ‘holding back’ when they spar and has yet to win against him - if AAARRRGGHH was doing that on purpose, this supports my theory that he was debating how safe it was to stay on Gunmar’s side for some time before deserting. 

Morgana possessed? 

Angor Rot saved Morgana/recovers her body and gives a funerary-sounding blessing, showing he was sympathetic to humans before losing his soul  

Oh, and Nari gave her the new hand 

Wait, so who steals Angor’s soul in this timeline? 

Called it on that servant guy being a Changeling - he appears in the background of, like, every scene that episode where they’re talking about Morgana using unexpected strategies to sneak into Camelot. 

Wait, except his human form is an adult - so is he a polymorph? Or Familiars can be taken as adults but babies are easier to contain and have less ‘established personality’ to match after replacing them? Or has Morgana already been creating Changelings? AAARRRGGHH calls Jim “impure” when they meet in Dwoza, suggesting Gumm-Gumms already know what Changelings are, except Morgana wasn’t working with them yet

Is Callista going to be Deya? (Later confirmed, yes)

Show seems to be matching up with old theories about Deya being the first Trollhunter, confirming that the show, comics, and novels are all separate continuities (since comics and novels show pre-Deya Trollhunters). 

Gumm-Gumm berserkers - mind-controlled or grit-shaka’d (talisman of “no fear”), to throw themselves into sunlight like that?

Steve seems ready to refer to any half-decent older man as his dad, like when he refers to Merlin as ‘Wizard-Dad’. Maybe it’s because I was watching Brooklyn 99 recently but I’m reminded of Jake Peralta.

Big Jim’s crystal neck protrusions look like Strickler’s knife collar back when I thought that was part of his body. Glowy lines look like Gunmar; tie-in to Gunmar born of a “corrupted Heartstone” since Jim is “corrupted” now?

Aw, Krel called Ricky his dad. 

How did AAARRRGGHH fit through the HexTech door to the backroom?

“Cat and mouse” line cuts to a shot of Archie obviously imitating Nari (confirmed a few minutes later)

Toby has obviously seen Ghostbusters. “When someone asks you if you are a god, you say YES!”

Decoration in bookshop looks like Angor’s head.

Was that lightshow of Nari searching the world for Jim’s soul just a visual metaphor for her powers or did literally everyone on Earth see that?

“There’s a force neither of us can escape - gravity!” says the woman who can fly.

Morgana’s occasional echo-y voice in Trollhunters matches Bellroc and Skael - possession/magical-influence related?

So did Merlin have that book on him or did his body turn into the book?

Are all dragons fluffy and/or shapeshifters in this universe? 

Might’ve been smarter to keep Merlin’s staff intact and destroy the Grimoire so the Arcane Order never knows where to find the Genesis Seals, just saying.

If Morgana didn’t become “the Eldritch Queen” until, like, IMMEDIATELY before Angor approached her (therefore days earlier at most in the unaltered timeline), how had he heard of her to seek her aid? Was he actually reaching out to the Arcane Order? At least this explains why he didn’t go to the Trollhunter for help - there was no Trollhunter to approach yet.

Big Jim ‘dies’ in the same pose as AAARRRGGHH in Trollhunters Season 1 and Draal in Unbecoming, both false death scenes, for five-second foreshadowing Jim was alive. 

Mixed feelings about him being human again - like I’ve said, I didn’t think the Troll Jim subplot was well-executed but I also felt like, now that it’s been established, the show needs to stick with it. Since everything’s over I’m going to headcanon Jim having shapeshifting powers now and being able to switch between human and troll at will, he just didn’t think to try to do so on-camera.

Also, I feel like Jim’s relationship with Claire is once again completely overshadowing his relationship with Toby, instead of them being different kinds of relationships with equal weight. 

Barbara is going to be pretty shocked when her human son shows up again. She and Strickler don’t appear at all in this series, even in cameo. 

Maybe Jim’s not a troll anymore because, with Merlin and Morgana both dead, their magic is “broken” and that’s what was holding his transformation in place? Merlin’s through the potion, Morgana’s through the Changeling femur, both through the Amulet.

Is Jim still going back to New Jersey? Blinky’s got to, unless the trolls there have elected a new leader or they’re bringing the New Jersey Heartstone back to Arcadia.

Series ending scene also would work as the final scene of a movie, setting up a sequel hook even though it’s supposed to be over now. 

Seems like wizards are long-lived and age really slowly? Possibly a “will not die but can be killed” situation, like vampires, or unicorns (at least in The Last Unicorn) 

Additional thoughts after finishing the show and thinking for a while: 

I don’t get how Morgana could end up with such a reputation among trolls - enough to have superstitions about her, seen when Dictatious objects to Usurna saying her name - when they only interacted with her for like a few days at most. I guess she made a pretty strong impression on Gunmar, who passed that on to everyone else? Or maybe she cultivated that reputation over time via the Changelings?

Speaking of the Changelings, does this mean that, while Morgana designed the process to create them, she doesn’t make each individual one? Otherwise she would’ve had to pre-make a bunch in the time between getting her new hand and being trapped in the Heartstone. Although, if she can steal Angor’s soul remotely (with the idea she was already trapped in the Heartstone when that happened), she can probably also make Changelings remotely. 

I’m kind of sorry the Changelings got invented so quickly; I figured there would be some trial-and-error to that process.

How I think the Original Timeline went: 

Morgana would’ve turned to the Arcane Order seeking magic allies, later in the day that gets changed when the time-travelers arrive. Possibly she seeks out Nari, specifically, remembering her from childhood. 

Merlin then sees Morgana as the Future Threat and he or one of the knights (not Arthur) cut off her hand in the resulting fight. 

Merlin makes the Amulet. It chooses Callista, who is still in Camelot’s dungeon at the time, and she agrees to fight Gunmar in exchange for her freedom. 

She fully intending to go back on the deal and run for it, but then something-something-something and she learns her original name and saves the world anyway. Probably she’s the one who took down and imprisoned AAARRRGGHH in Dwoza, which inspired the other trolls there to follow her. 

Morgana finds out about the Trollhunter shortly before Angor arrives to ask her for magic, which is why she orders him to hunt the Trollhunters down.

Arthur thinks Merlin killed Morgana and wants to avenge her, leading him to the Arcane Order for the original not-time-loop-prompted attack.  

Show did a good job establishing and developing Douxie’s relationship with Merlin

Also, how did that bookshop end up a center of Merlin’s power? He’s only been in the modern world for a few months. Did he set a shop up off-camera while the trolls were travelling to New Jersey and the Akiridions were discovering Earth? 

How did Ricky Blank lose his head, anyway? Can Hex Tech fix him? Krel says magic and Akiridion tech combine harmoniously.

Is this your first time living away from Bellroc and Skael? Is it hard to adjust?

“It is not the first time I have been away from the order. We are ancient and awesome creatures, and it is no great feat to spend a decade or a century on our own and return to the others once more. But...”

But.

She cannot ignore what all three of them had done in the past. She cannot forgive herself for her blindness, but she can choose to keep her eyes open from now on. Even if it hurts. Even if it feels as though every inch of her is starting to rot away.

What is it humans call it?

Heartbreak.

“It is the first time I have made the choice to never go back. If I am successful, I will never see the other two again.”

Eir knelt down before the throne. She felt as if there was a weight in her chest. She was confused and lost as to what to do. "My King? I... I have fallen upon uncertain times. I was approached by a group and one of them has decided to stay with me for the time being." Eir sighed heavily. "I was wondering... Do you know anything about an ice spirit by the name of Skrael?"

“Walk with me, Bonemender.”

Gunmar leads Eir into the horde, where the roars of helheeti, the moans of gruesomes and the cries of stalklings will drown out their conversation.

“Morgana never spoke of them, so I did not believe.But if the one you’ve met is a follower of Skrael...”

“Mark my words with a pinch of salt,  I only know the stories the Nullhullers would tell me, and a few legends passed down from Orlagk. Skael of the North Wind. Of course, he has other names.
