IS: “Rodolfo Torti and Sergio Bonelli, two greats in the world of comics.” SB: Specifically, what do you do: do you sit down with a pencil in your mouth? IS: “The gestation is very long. Silvia Duncan:
Starting with the simplest one, Sivia is related backstory-wise to Five. Five grew up in an orphanage that was overcrowded and had little food to go around, causing survival of the fittest to kick in. Slivia was a few years older than Five and was the one who basically saved Five from dying. She taught him how to fight and protected him from the worst of the older kids, basically taking on a big sister role.
Cain Whittaker:
Cain Whittaker is related backstory-wise to Zero, his younger brother. Zero was the strongest of his—and future—generations, having multiple affinities (powers) which is entirely unheard of. Cain only had one affinity, which is technological control that allows him to create devices years and years ahead of his time. Cain desired power, and climbed the ranks of the military of the weak country he was born into. A few weeks after Zero's 19th birthday, Cain imbeded a control device around Zero's neck, which allowed Cain almost complete control over Zero. When Zero tried to escape, Cain killed his fiancé, who Zero had originally come to tell Cain about when Cain betrayed him. Cain then used Zero as a living weapon to boost the country to the height of its power (where it rests today), running Zero into almost nothing in the process.
General Whittaker:
A descendant of Cain and the current leader of the army, and the country (Selim). He currently has control over Zero, though far less control because his power is different. All General Whittaker can do is cause Zero to experience unimaginable amounts of physical pain, cause his muscles to seize, and prevent Zero from harming himself. General Whittaker is one of the antagonists of the series. Apart from Zero, he isn't that different from any other military leader (that is to say, Zero is the only main human atrocity committed), which makes him an interesting dilemma for the characters. Is it worth saving one person if that one person's suffering is what saves a country?
