realized a lot of people probably think sherlock holmes is some logical, melancholy, serious guy. like no he's not, he shook hands with a baby and once let a criminal go because it was christmas time

I'd be remiss if I didn't do Holmes' husband too. So here's a buncha Watson studies featuring him in various stages of his life.
I was trying to figure out how I wanted to draw him. He was a little harder to figure out compared to Holmes, but I adore Hardwicke and Burke's Watsons so he's mostly based off them!
I tried to strike the balance between reservedness vs. vulnerability and I think I've managed to pin him down!
And since you guys enjoyed the last couple of bonuses, here's another one 😆

I began writing this post before and lost my draft when I went to check how far along “Letters from Watson” is, so here it is without preamble. Lesson learned. 😆 (It appears to be up to The Hound of the Baskervilles at the time of this post.)
If you chose some combination of the short story collections and novels, I’d love to hear which ones in the comments and tags!
Please reblog for a larger sample size. :)

The early Sherlock Holmes novels are so interesting bc Watson takes an almost antagonistic view to Sherlocks deductive capabilities which results in a "deduce this, asshole" vibe

Dear Reader, I read another couple of Sherlock Holmes books. Here are some of my favourite bizzare plot points
A man brags about his son's ability to kill cockroaches
A woman is hired to be a governess, but the father seems much more interested in her wearing certain dresses, cutting her hair or sitting in a particular way. It very much seems like he and his wife are looking for a third
There is a man called Colonel Hater
There is a "Christmas Special" story
Dogs are crucial to the plots of at least five stories - The Silver Blaze, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Copper Beaches, The Creeping Man and The Sign of the Four. No cats, though
A man claims to have been sent from the US to the UK to find two people with the same surname so he can give them £5mil each. People believe him.
Watson finds Sherlock "literally ankle deep" in complimentary letters and telegrams, but incredibly depressed
Sherlock gets engaged so he can break into a garden
Sherlock finds out that a woman's engagement is a sham and that her mother and stepfather are manipulating her. He doesn't tell her, because she might be upset
Merry spookmas!

I like that this came up in my 'on this day' reminders from last January. Actual Sir ACD quote with a few minor additions ... 💯% mood.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, you made so many specific choices here
full text under the cut
It was not a long journey from Winchester to Thor Place, but it was long to me in my impatience, while for Holmes it was evident that it seemed endless; for, in his nervous restlessness he could not sit still, but paced the carriage or drummed with his long, sensitive fingers upon the cushions beside him. Suddenly, however, as we neared our destination he seated himself opposite to me—we had a first-class carriage to ourselves—and laying a hand upon each of my knees he looked into my eyes with the peculiarly mischievous gaze which was characteristic of his more imp-like moods.
"Watson," said he, "I have some recollection that you go armed upon these excursions of ours."
It was as well for him that I did so, for he took little care for his own safety when his mind was once absorbed by a problem so that more than once my revolver had been a good friend in need. I reminded him of the fact.
"Yes, yes, I am a little absent-minded in such matters. But have you your revolver on you?"
I produced it from my hip-pocket, a short, handy, but very serviceable little weapon. He undid the catch, shook out the cartridges, and examined it with care.
"It's heavy—remarkably heavy," said he.
"Yes, it is a solid bit of work."
He mused over it for a minute.
"Do you know, Watson," said he, "I believe your revolver is going to have a very intimate connection with the mystery which we are investigating."

Sherlock Holmes is trending on Tumblr?!!!! That means it's the perfect time for a reminder that this is starting soon:
Regular emails from your friend Dr John Watson about the adventures of his eccentric detective roommate.
Inspired by Mark Kirkland’s excellent Dracula Daily, Letters from Watson will let you read through the entirety of the Sherlock Holmes short stories over the course of one year via bitesize emails.
Emails will begin January 1st 2023, the date when all Sherlock Holmes stories will be in the public domain in the US for the first time! (Well... ok between you and me if you sign up before that date you'll get a few little extra treats in your inbox over December 2022.)
You can read more and sign up here!
There is also a community discord here!
