Week 15 & 16
July 23 ~ Aug 3
My last two weeks at STPI were quite hectic.
Most things that were happening at the end of July were major workshops that were off-site. This required more planning and packing beforehand to prepare for such.
ABLE Drop-In Activity
With ABLE, a social service agency in Singapore that offers respite, rehabilitation services, and more for persons with physical challenges, STPI conducted a gallery tour for participants to try out the Artsy Afternoon workshop. There were people in wheelchairs and a few who had a hard time proceeding, so it was important to always stand by to make space enough for mobility.
NLB | Miniature Bookbinding
With NLB, the long waited miniature bookbinding has been conducted. It was a free walk-in session so it quickly turned very chaotic with large quantities. Our team had to split to tables to be able to help out participants. I was mostly with the camera, documenting the process.
STPI x NGS x MCCY | National Day Istana Open House
Biggest final workshop for my internship time. We traveled to Istana at 6AM with all the materials for the local food printing workshop on postcards. This required a great amount of materials to bring so we needed to call in all interns to help out. Once we got there we set up the booth on the selected site and guided visitors to try out printing on postcards. My main job was documenting and promoting the workshop.
STPI x SAM | SAM Induction Programme
I was assigned to mind the reception so I wasn't able to help out for this workshop.
Reflection
After a few weeks of busy days, my internship came to an end. I gave out presents to my team and other interns to thank them for their support and help during my time at STPI. It really was a huge rollercoaster ride through my time. I had no idea what I was getting myself into but it also made me realize a glimpse of insight into what is like to work in the art industry with your team and the gallery.
I was mostly grateful for the wonderful people I was able to meet during my journey and the opportunity to grow through them.
It was definitely not an easy experience and I would ponder if someone asked me if I wanna go through that again, but I could confidently say the person who I was before and now is completely different. And I wouldn't have been able to be where I am now without this experience and the people who have helped me.

HAPPY 2022!
It is once again, a brand new year. Amidst the insane happenings around the world, I must say, 2021 has been a rather challenging, fulfilling, enlightening and a year filled with immense personal growth. In this new day of the new year, I reflect upon the things that has happened in the past year that has made the future a far brighter and exciting one.
Firstly, my lack of posts on my website is because of a rather personal reason. I am currently in my first year in Graduate school, studying a Masters in Arts for the Conservation of Cultural Relics in the Tainan National University of the Arts. I am now currently based in Taiwan and therefore, will only accept commissions if they can be sent to me via post.
Secondly, the journal I have chosen for 2022, is a homework that was given to me by my dearest teacher and mentor, Mark Cockram. He tasked me (a long time ago) to explore the binding techniques of Jean de Gonet. I decided to use the fish skin parchment I made, paired with a soft plate printed rainbow prints of the fish I used for this parchment: the trout. This was bound sewn on cords, featuring the fish skin parchment on the spine as well as the corners. As fish skin is very translucent, I added coloured paper under the skin to brighten it and to give it variety.
In a Chinese new year greeting “年年有餘”, which translates to “Abundance Every Year”, I look forward to this new year with abundance of love, joy, happiness, opportunities, great health and new knowledge.
Here’s wishing the world, a better future, while I study hard, to become a bookbinder/conservator!

Bynd Artisan
With a legacy dating back to over 60 years ago, Bynd Artisan was established by Singapore’s oldest bookbinder to celebrate the work and joy of master craftsmen. The retail concept is a tribute to the enduring excellence of a small band of homegrown craftsmen schooled in the traditional ways of bookbinding and leather crafting.
We were commissioned to create a branding experience for Bynd Artisan’s customers. The final result was a brand ethos of “Something’s Worth Sharing”, marrying the ideas of “hardware” (sharing Bynd Artisan’s expertise of paper, leather and bookbinding techniques) with the “heart” of their story (sharing their heritage, built upon the qualities of honesty, authenticity and artisanship). This notion of “sharing” is especially apt in the modern context of social media shares and the exchange of user-generated content.

Can you remember how love used to work before the internet? 💞
Spontaneous real-life meetings (the ones that might eventually end-up on long-lasting marriage) seems like stories we can only find on a Netflix catalogue. But on today’s #magazinemonday publication, our liquid love society disintegrates with the first issue of Meantime Magazine: a collection of love stories from Singapore’s past. Mixing different types of paper, unique Japanese bookbinding and many printed surprises along the way, this magazine is just as beautiful as the stories it tells. Memories are revisited and shared by ordinary people that lived in the country, each one going back to a different time-frame of Singapore’s history. Forbidden love, arranged marriage, and love-at-first-sight are some of the topics you will find among the beautiful analogue family photographs.
We highly recommend reading it while listening to your favourite romantic playlist and taking some time to absorb every detail. You will definitely want to give a call to your grandparents to hear about how they met after that.
Meantime will be joining us at this year’s edition of Indiecon. Save the date on the event (https://www.facebook.com/events/1280650965429349/) and come by to see the publication at hand! 🌈 Title: Meantime Subtitle: Issue #1: Love Language: English Publisher: Self-published Editorial office: Singapore Topics: History, love, current affairs First edition & publication frequency: 2019; Published annually Copy price: 30 Singapore dollars (S$30)/£16.00/€20/US$22 Subscription price: N.A. The Unassuming Mighty Amphibian (Skin)
Time is flying by so quickly, and I have been overwhelmed with work and various things that are happening all at once that is taking away time from updating this blog. However, I foresee some time coming up soon that I can put together posts about work that I have been doing these past couple of months in 2021.
One of the greatest achievements for this first quarter of 2021 is the publishing of the second part of my article in the Designer Bookbinders UK Spring newsletter. This is a follow-up of my earlier article in the Winter edition of the newsletter about my explorations with frog skin. In this issue, I showcase 2 books I made, using the frog skin as covering materials, onlays and parts of a box.
I must say, frog skin is extremely versatile and despite its tiny size and thinness, it far exceeds the initial assumption that it is weak and fragile. The skin is flexible, tough and very malleable, making it extremely nice to work with.
I am hoping that the uploaded images are big enough for reading, if not, do drop me an email and I will send you the pdf of the newsletter.

Binding Techniques - Perfect Binding
Perfect binding is one of the easiest and fastest methods of binding books.
Perfect Binding uses adhesive to hold individual book pages (or folded book signatures) together. The adhesive is placed on the book spine, producing a flat spine. Depending on the adhesive used, the book can be held together tightly. These adhesives provide a relatively stronger ‘bind’ compared to the regular PVC glue.
There are many variations of Perfect Binding, some of which includes: Notch Binding and Burst Binding:
Notch binding involves the creation of notches along the spine for an increased surface area to hold the glue.
Burst binding involves creation of extra slits/holes along the spine of the book to allow the glue to seep deeper into the spine of the book.
Both the Notch binding and Burst binding serve to provide a stronger adhesion of the spine, making the book more durable.
