I’ve been trying to read the ace novel to practice reading Japanese and I find it really funny how deuce describes ace like he’s the heartthrob surfer dude male lead in some 2010s Disney film

Anyways here’s an ace since I was thinking about him

uh hi hello!! first i wanted to say i am deeply in love with your art (god those shapes, these lines, texture, anatomy, expression, EVERYTHING) and your latest drawing just moved something in me i cant quite grasp it, been thinking about it for a couple days. sooo i felt inspired and made myself a smol little machete out of uh wild clay so i could kiss him on the forehead before going to sleep, i hope you're ok with that? Actually I think it's severely underrated how fucking funny ejm Brian has the potential to be when there is no actual end. When he's just living on the ship on the day to day between stories and the like. Ends are so, so subjective when there are no wars or really even active society. Stuff like

Brian on his way to the kitchen to grab smth to feed the octokittens -> Jonny and Tim are arguing in front of the door -> he knows from experience that interrupting or trying to get by would only mean getting himself dragged into it -> the octokittens make (most) everyone happy and deserve to be fed food that won't immediately kill them -> conclusion: shoot both Jonny and Tim before they notice him so he can walk over their corpses to the fridge and get the octokittens food

behold my oc as I conceptualized him back in high school????

so how do I explain this…I shared this particular character, Silvius, sometimes on here. I’m still working on his general reference sheet, but while chatting with a friend about how our ocs came to be, I thought it would be fun to draw him how I first imagined him from all those yearsssss ago, back when ff xiii-2 had trailers released. I say that because he didn’t exist until I heard caius’s va speak in the trailer and then he just poof!!! appeared in my head. I only had two of the main characters prior to him: the protagonist Merel, a shopkeeper npc lady who’s trapped behind the shop counter and very fascinated by magic, and a masked magician Cyrus who becomes bffs with her and who then collapses on one of his visits simultaneously setting her free and so she leaves on a mission to save her only friend while encountering adventures on the way and discovering hidden truths. Silvius was supposed to be the arrogant villainous antagonist she encounters, an official committed to ousting magic from the world. His fate was to end up rotting in a dungeon by the end of the story.

The current version of the story has him in a more complex role?? Softer??? He’s more of an anti-villain I guess, an obstacle? A kind of a reluctant helper. I’ll do better to describe his current character another time tho I gotta go to bed, thanks for reading this far!!! 🫶

your drawing guides are SO helpful. Thanks for making them! I was wondering, how did you get to good at breaking down and figuring out what forms/shapes to use?

Thank you! I'm so glad they've been useful!

Well, something I've learned is that you can basically draw anything, and I mean anything, with just a handful of specific shapes, which are cylinders, spheres, squares, rectangles, and cones/triangles.

These are your building blocks to drawing anything and everything, it's just a matter of breaking whatever it is you want to draw down to these shapes.

For example, here's a picture of my doggo.

Let's break him down.

It's all about ignoring the details, colors, textures etc... and simplifying your subject into its most basic form. And once you do that, it's easier to sketch them out using these shapes as building blocks to construct them. Once you have the basic shape, pose, or expression sketched out, you carve away what you don't need and add detail, clothing, hair, facial expressions etc..

We'll use Lucifer as another example, as I can go back to his character sheet.

You can even break down their clothes if you want, like Lucifer's hat:

You give the shapes curves and depth to show direction and action, don't feel like you have to keep them frigidly in their pristine, straight-lined shapes. Be loose with it.

So far, with deconstructing Hazbin characters, I've found that most of their shapes are triangles and cylinders (of various sizes and widths). They also tend to be very curved and fluid, which is fun.

In the end it kind of just takes practice and training your brain to strip away all the fancy details, cut the character 's body into the basic sections we know of (face, neck, chest, torso, pelvis, arms, legs, feet), simplify those into their most bare-bones shapes, and pay attention to how those those shapes connect together.
