The Bluebeard Room, Nancy Drew Mystery Stories #77 (1985)
Simon & Schuster took over the publishing rights to the Nancy Drew titles in 1985, and maintained the continuity of the Mystery Stories but introduced a new, more adult style to the stories. The first S&S published title was The Bluebeard Room. The new style became the template for a spin off âsisterâ series called The Nancy Drew Files, aimed at an older female teenage audience and contained more current themes, including drugs smuggling and murder as opposed to the traditional Nancy fare of lost heiresses, hauntings, art thefts and kidnappings. Nancyâs independence was also enhanced by a split with boyfriend Nick Nickerson, enabling Nancy to explore new romantic adventures and avoid the âdamsel in distressâ trope, being continually rescued by Nick from danger in the final reel.
The action of The Bluebeard Room is set in Cornwall, England, where one of Nancyâs old friends, Lisa, appears to be plagued by a coven of witches following her marriage to an English nobleman, Hugh Penvellyn. Her friendâs mother, Mrs Harwood, asks Nancy to investigate her daughterâs increasingly strange behaviour, mistrusting her son-in-law who she fears maybe poisoning Lisa to get his hands on her fortune. Nancy travels to Cornwall with Bess and George and soon finds herself tangling not only with witches, but cocaine smugglers too. The pagan coven turns out to a front for drugs dealing and Lisa has been being fed an elixir by one of the baddies to encourage her to sleepwalk on the dangerous battlements of the ancestral house as a warning to Hugh. Nancy has a couple of romantic encounters with an up and coming American rock star and with a local reporter, but manages to solve the mystery while keeping her reputation intact.
The story falls a little uncomfortably between teen romance and girlsâ adventure and whereas the exploration of Cornish pagan survivals is good fun, the 1980s cultural references date the book more than the classic Nancy tales and the new edgy feel doesnât altogether work. The style was developed more successfully as the Files series took off, and the new approach certainly rejuvenated the popularity of the girl detective.

In the upscale Toronto strip club Exotica, dancer Christina is visited nightly by the obsessive Francis, a depressed tax auditor. Her ex-boyfriend, the clubâs MC, Eric, still jealously pines for her even as he introduces her onstage, but Eric is having his own relationship problems with the clubâs female owner. Thomas, a mysterious pet-shop owner, is about to become unexpectedly involved in their lives. Credits: TheMovieDb. I canât even remember anything that comes close. Filipe Manuel Neto: **Something abstract and disconnected, not worth seeing more than once in our life.** This is one of those films that puts such a huge barrier between the audience and the screen that it seems like weâre not even being taken into consideration by the producers. Despite the attempts, there is not a single sympathetic or palatable character, the script does not help and the feeling that hangs in the air is of a lack of connection and solidity in the final product that can only be explained if we think about the way the director wanted to be. abstract by force. Everything takes place around a chic striptease club, Exotica, in Toronto. There is a dancer who enchants not only a client who goes to see her every day, but also the presenter, who is her ex-boyfriend and one of the most possessive and unhappy people we can imagine. Add to this an animal trafficker with problems admitting homosexuality who is forced to participate in a revenge plan, and we have a film that we probably wonât want to see more than once. Atom Egoyan gives us firm direction, but a much less secure and solid script. I like the way it addresses loss, trauma, the feeling of denial of reality and grief. However, to believe that a woman would set up an elegant strip club and her daughter would have the courage to take over the âfamily businessâ is to completely ignore the realities of these commercial establishments, where legality and illegality sometimes go hand in hand. A real luxury house would never hold private sessions on tables in the main room for a low price, but in separate rooms for a much higher price, and real strippers donât usually dance to the same music and use the same stage number constantly. There are also huge holes that the script never explains and that are left hanging. For example, why did Christina decide to become a stripper if it is clear, from the charactersâ words, that that is not the place she deserved to be. Bruce Greenwood is the actor who deserves the most praise for his work here. He is the only one trying to break the ice and reach out to the public in some way, and that deserv...

Hereâs couple of sets of photos from our very own Steen Barnes, scholar, gentleman and surf photographer of prodigious renown. Steen makes his happy home in the Illawarra, just south of Sydney and within spitting distance of both a city centre and the big blue Pacific Ocean. Steen can - and does - take care of business in town, turn up at the right place, with the right lens when the swell arrives, and still be home in time for tea.
Most of Australiaâs east coast recently had a good pulse of energy from a storm a long way out in the Coral Sea. East-norâeasterly swell hit the Gold Coast head-on over the weekend: by Sunday it was for heroes and madmen only. Down south at Steenâs local spot the same swell arrived as a long period norâeast, growing over a few days before tapering off under onshore winds. Said Steen: âChayne surfed the smaller day leading up to the swell on the Sunday, super clean but small and inconsistent. He was coming home from a signwriting job and I snuck out from family duties. We hooked up. When the waves came in they were real pretty but it was a long time in between.â
A couple of days later Steen snuck off from the office late morning to check the spot again. âI rocked up Tuesday around 11am to see Simon checking it in his ugg boots. It was pumping, but Simon was procrastinating. He had just come off night shift with the ambos, (Simonâs a paramedic, if you didnât  know already), and heâd had a rough night. I was frothing. It looked solid, heavy and clean. I convinced Simon to get out there. He cruised back to his car, and got ready. As he was walking up the beach the most perfect, cleanest wave I had seen for a long time throttled off down the beach, leaving me dancing around, yelling out ... then Simon paddled out and caught the waves pictured. Within 40 minutes the onshore came in and I went back to work.â
