Personas in the Woods: Main Character - Selma Ann Forester (Selmers)

Selma Ann Forester, or just Selmers, is a fellow creative Mae befriended during her return to Possum Springs. Bonded over the former bouncing poetry ideas to the latter, the two eventually connected and formed a relationship between disgruntled creatives.

Simone, the fighter

Background: A historical revolutionary found among the stars, Simone was known for leading a rebellion against the corrupt rulers of her homeland, evading capture for many years. In a final charge, she was killed and was buried in an anonymous mass grave. It is said she now lives on, serving her homeland as its foundation in the ground.

On October 28, 1993, the Simpsons "Treehouse of Horror IV" aired. The wrap-around segments were done in a parody of the "Night Gallery" anthology series with Bart in the position of Rod Serling. The three segments were "The Devil and Homer Simpson" (based on "The Devil and Daniel Webster"), "Terror at 5 1/2 Feet" (based on the Twilight Zone episode and movie segment "Terror at 20,000 Feet" with Bart taking the William Shatner/John Lithgow role), and "Bart Simpson's Dracula" (based on various vampire tales, in particular "Bram Stroker's Dacula", "Nosferatu" and "The Lost Boys".) more an' more whenever i go lookin' to read old issues of comics about a character i like, i find that seein' Gail Simone on writing credits is a good reason to skip that run

i was tryin' to read more Rose & Thorn stuff cuz honestly aside from the whole "oooh Rose doesn't know that her alter's a vigilante HOW EERIE AND MYSTERIOUS" thing, it's like

honestly not too bad? there's a decent chunk of comics about them that doesn't demonize their plurality

but then the solo comic from '04 and their appearances in Simone's BOP (with that horrible male-gazey hypersexualized art by Benes) are just, like

gods, it's Simone at her worst, alright? Lots of OOOOH LOOK AT HOW CRAZY AND VIOLENT THORN IS, to the point that i can barely stomach a few pages per issue. They even used a harder-to-read 'crazy' font for Thorn's narration boxes.

a lot of the time it's hard to articulate exactly what i hate about Gail Simone's writing and her narrative voice but the ableism and demonization of neurodivergence is a pretty strong part of it

(also considerin' how much Simone speaks about violence against women in comics it's pretty fucked up that she retconned Rose & Thorn's backstory to be more violent against female characters and kill more of them)

Rose & Thorn shouldn't be a story about how scary and traumatized folks with DID/OSDD are, it should be DC's answer to Moon Knight.
