Ochossi’s Employment Spell
Ochossi, the divine hunter, may be petitioned for assistance with locating and bagging employment. Traditionally an altar is created for him within a forest. An offering laid before a tree in a park is the best alternative. If neither is possible, recreate Ochossi’s home in your own. Arrange woodland images around an altar. Bring Ochossi offerings:
Fill a small terracotta bowl with honey.
Place seven silver-colored coins around it (they do not have to be real silver).
Ochossi prefers rum or cachaca. Offer him an entire bottle, although it can be a small airline-size one. Open it for him. (Some take a mouthful of liquor. Without swallowing any, blow it onto the altar.)
Add some honey-roasted peanuts.
Speak with the orisha; tell him what you need.

I just had the fantasy to create a cocktail for August Willenheim, from WTNC! 😊
It is made with violet sirup, blue curacao, any white alcohol you like (I used cachaca because I had it handy, but vodka, gin... would do as well; I didn't want to open a whole bottle especially for this funny test, but good white wine would OBVIOUSLY have been the perfect choice), and a pinch of edible golden powder for decorating pastries - if you're able to find silver, it's even better!
I hesitate for the name: starry void, blue haze, purple rain?... What do you think, WTNC fandom?... 😊

Cachaca Santo Grau Itirapua
Cachaca Santo Grau Itirapua
Cachaca Santo Grau Itirapua. The Santo Grau brand brings together 3 different sugar mills/distilleries for its range of artisanal cachaca. The cachaca I am reviewing today is one the three signature bottlings from each of those distilleries.
It is also closely related to the previous Santo Grau cachaca I reviewed as it comes from the same small distillery in Sao Paulo state Itirapua.

To keep the spirits high while staying at home during this lockdown season Drinks & Destinations have introduced a few new online activities. Starting from a series of Instagram Live Chats with international experts called ‘Super Six Series’ to also host online ‘Happy Hour’ Sessions. Rojita Tiwari conducted the first ‘Happy Hour’ session sharing stories and tips on preparing ‘Simple Summer Cocktails’ with available ingredients at home. Read more.
We selected four cocktails- with interesting stories of origin-which are easy to prepare with four kinds of spirits available at any home bar and mixers that are found in the pantry add to that a few fresh fruits and herbs from the kitchen. And you are ready for a summer cocktail party!
Cocktail No 1: Highball (Japanese Way)
By definition a highball is a drink that has a base spirit like whisky or rum and a higher quantity of a fizzy drink such as Soda, Coke or Ginger Ale. This has existed in different forms in different countries, however highball became very popular when the Japanese whiskey maker Suntroy started promoting the whiskeys with soda (mostly with its in-house soda brand). If you take a trip to the Hakushu whiskey distillery in Japan located inside a forest in the outskirts of Tokyo, you will be treated with a DIY highball making session at the end of the tour.
How to make it:
45 ml or 60 ml (Whisky or whiskey, blended/peaty/smoky single malts work the best. But you can choose any whisky)
5 ml limejuice (optional)
Mint
Ice
Collin’s glass
Pour lime juice and ice till top in a tall glass and stir.
Pour whiskey
Top it with soda
Dab the mint leaves, drop in the glass, and give it a gentle stir.
Cocktail No 2: The ‘Batanga’ (All the way from Mexico)
As far as the cocktail stories go, this one tops the list. A humble cocktail that originated in a small bar in the town of Tequila in Mexico and actually travelled around the world with the visiting bartenders. Batanga owes its credit to Don Javier Delgado Corona, the owner of the bar La Capilla (The Chapel) in Tequila who loved to tell the tale when a visitor walked into the bar. In 1961 when he started operating the bar, he served a drink that was named ‘Batanga’ means short and fat. While he was actually referring to a friend of his who he fondly called Batanga, a name that has also link to an outrigger of a canoe, made of bamboo used in an island near the Philippines.
Now, coming back to the drink, it was served in a slightly shorter and thick glass, which later changed to a regular Collin’s glass.
How to make it:
Run the rim of the glass with a lime wedge and then roll it in salt. Fill the glass with ice.
5 ml Add lime juice
60 ml Tequila (Patron Silver works best but any tequila will do)
Coca-Cola (or Jeeru/Jeeralu, the softdrink that is available in many grocery stores across India)
Stir and garnish with a lime wedge.
What made Batanga even more interesting was that Don Javier would stir the drink with the same knife that he used to cut the limes at the bar counter. During the last two decades when the bartenders were visiting Tequila to work at distilleries they would all hang out at this small bar in the town after a busy day at work . And, as they downed glasses of this simple cocktail every evening word spread around and Batanga became one the most popular cocktails, so much so that La Capilla found its name in the ‘World’s 50 Best Bars’ list multiple times.
Batanga carries the legacy of the legendary Tequila man Don Javier, who died in March this year. We raised a glass of tequila in respect and memory of meeting him at his bar in Mexico in 2016.
Cocktail No 3: Gin & Tonic (Spanish Style)
Gin first originated in Italy then in Belgium and the Netherlands, later it was taken home by the British soldiers back to England and tonic water originated in India. That story never gets old. Especially every time you ask an Indian drinker about his favourite cocktail tale. As the story goes the British Army officials stationed in India often had to fight against malaria. So in around 1825 they began blending quinine (the bitter anti malaria drug) with sugar, water and gin to create a much palatable version, which also worked as a recreational drink. The British version is a simple one, gin and tonic in a tall glass filled with ice with a lime wedge in it. However, the Spanish twist to the regular G & T is what makes for a much prettier and tastier drink.
How to make it:
Take a goblet (wine) glass
Fill it with ice till middle
Pour 60 ml of Gin
Pour 120 ml of Tonic Water
Drop a few slices of orange/lemon
Add some peppers
Mint
Stir and Enjoy!
(You can also add rosemary and other heard and choice of citrus fruit to make it more aromatic)
Cocktail No 4: Caipiroska With a Twist (Russian Delight Indian way)
Caipiroska became popular in Russia in the 14th century as a twist to the original cocktail from Brazil called Caipirinha made with Cachaca (spirit produced from sugar cane). Of course, the Russian version had vodka in it. To add to the summer theme of these cocktails we gave it another twist by adding green mango and chili to the recipe.
How to make it:
Take a rock glass
Add 1 teaspoon sugar
Drop 2-4 slices of lime
One slice of raw mango
Muddle well
Fill the glass with ice till top
Pour 60 ml Beluga Vodka (Or any vodka that you have)
Stir well
If you are into spicy drinks, rim the glass with a bit of chili and add it as garnish.
Enjoy!
You can also watch a brief video of the cocktail session on our YouTube Channel here!

Do try out these cocktails at home and let us know your thoughts. Cheers!

Angostura Wins Gold, Silver at Spirits Business - Rum and Cachaça Masters 2018
Angostura Wins Gold, Silver at Spirits Business – Rum and Cachaça Masters 2018
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago, May 7, 2018 — The House of Angostura® has taken home four medals at the prestigious and highly competitive Spirits Business – Rum and Cachaça Masters 2018 competition.
Angostura Wins Gold, Silver at Spirits Business – Rum and Cachaça Masters 2018 (House of Angostura)
Both Angostura 1919® and Angostura® 7 Year Old rum won gold medals in the competition, with the judges singling out Angostura 7 Year Old’s “good integration of wood”. Meanwhile, Angostura® Reserva and Angostura® 1787 copped silver.
The Spirits Business – Rum & Cachaça Masters competition aims to find and reward the finest rum and cachaça brands on the world stage. It is chaired by The Spirits Business and a panel of leading spirits specialists, and competing rums and cachaças are judged in a blind tasting.
Rums were assessed and marked on nose, palate, appearance and overall balance. Only spirits scoring above 70 points received medals. Angostura 1919® won its gold medal in the very competitive Gold Rum Super Premium Category, while Angostura® 7 Year Old won gold in the Dark Rum Aged up to 7 Years Category. Angostura® Reserva won silver in the Premium White Rum Category, as did Angostura® 1787 in the Dark Rum Ultra Premium category.
“We are told that this year’s competition was notable for the sheer quality of the expressions on display and by a high degree of innovation,” says Angostura® Chief Executive Officer, Genevieve Jodhan, “which makes this win very satisfying for our team.”
HOUSE OF ANGOSTURA®: A CELEBRATED APPROACH The only rum distillery in Trinidad today, Angostura’s signature style stems from techniques that have stood the test of time:
Production with only the highest quality molasses
Fermentation using proprietary culture of yeast
Distillation in continuous stills
Core range is aged in charred American oak casks, that were once used for aging bourbon (often referred to as First-Fill Bourbon Casks)
AWARD WINNING RANGE The House of Angostura®, distinguished by its excellence, has been recognised over the centuries by the granting of Royal Warrants of Appointment to the royal households of Great Britain, Prussia, Spain and Sweden as suppliers of Angostura aromatic bitters. London in Bloom – Chelsea Flower Show & A Floral Afternoon Tea
With the sun finally here to stay in the capital, there’s never been a better time to explore London in Bloom! We’re sharing photos of our recent escapades at Chelsea Flower Show and in Belgravia for afternoon tea with a twist. These charming London areas have never looked lovelier…
Chelsea in Bloom
Chelsea Flower Show officially marks the start of the UK social season, and thankfully the weather usually seems to perk up around this time. I really enjoyed visiting the flower show last year so was excited to see what they had come up with this year. We made our way to the flower show via Sloane Square where the shops have put on an impressive floral display of their own as part of #Chelseainbloom Floral Safari. There were some quirky giraffes outside Rag & Bone and another colorful one in front of Kiki McDonough’s boutique.
Chelsea Flower Show 2017
Weaving through the throngs of people inside RHS Chelsea Flower Show, we admired the elaborate trade stands including this cute topiary display.
This driftwood horse by James Doran Webb also caught my eye…
I couldn’t resist climbing up to this tree house made from kebony wood by BlueForest. There was a surprise inside – you can see down to the ground via a circular glass peep hole!
We enjoyed looking at the RHS Photographic Competition winning entries too. They go on tour to the RHS Gardens for the first time ever this year, and can be viewed at Rosemoor in Devon in July, Harlow Carr in Yorkshire in August, Hyde Hall in Essex in September and Wisley in Surrey during the month of October.
Among the Show Gardens, the Morgan Stanley Garden was one of my favourites and it scooped a silver-gilt medal. After the show, the whole garden will be donated to the Groundwork charity, to benefit 3 East London community schemes.
We were also impressed by the Silk Road Garden from Chengdu in China. The red blades represent the mountains in Sichuan Province, whilst the colourful peonies and rhododendrons were a joy to behold.
Floral Afternoon Tea at COMO The Halkin
As part of Belgravia in Bloom, a six day floral festival in Belgravia from 22-27 May, I was invited to afternoon tea with a difference at COMO The Halkin. The Belgravia in Bloom theme this year is children’s books, so COMO The Halkin have designed a tribute to Paddington Bear.
Don’t you just love these Wellington boots!
The amazing floral arrangements outside the hotel and in the lobby have been created by In Water Flowers. The Halkin is located on a discreet road in Belgravia. It’s surprisingly quiet considering how close it is to Hyde Park Corner. This week, Paddington Bear shaped cookies will be available in the Halkin Bar too.
The sun is here to stay in London! I made the most of it by heading to @comothehalkin with @rosana_mcphee for their Ametsa Afternoon Tea with Sipsmith floral gin cocktails. Loved the Paddington Bear inspired floral decorations in the lobby too! What do you think of the flower decorations?
A post shared by Suze | Luxury Columnist (@luxurycolumnist) on May 24, 2017 at 2:05pm PDT
The floral theme continues with the recently launched Ametsa Afternoon Tea, including floral gin cocktails and flower inspired desserts. Designed by Michelin starred chef Sergi Sanz in collaboration with award-winning Sipsmith gin, the cocktails are very photogenic. I chose the Berry Caipirinha, which was a delightful fruity blend of Sipsmith Dry Gin, cachaca and raspberry purée.
My friend Rosana went for the Eldorado, which was an appropriately golden colour, being a tasty combination of saffron infused gin, Lillet Blanc and St. Germain elderflower liquor.
We really enjoyed the Basque themed savouries – the original Ametsa in San Sebastian is famous for its Michelin starred Spanish cuisine and this tea certainly lives up to their reputation. First up was a refreshing sweetcorn soup with Txangurro, a mix of crab, onion and tomato, and a distinctive green pea cuajada curd.
Next up were duck and shallot skewers, crispy ham croquettes, Idiazabal cheese sandwich with onion chutney and broken eggs on waffle – my favourite being the tender duck. Certainly makes a change from the usual cucumber sandwiches!
There was a good choice of black, herbal and green teas, all by JING Tea. I opted for the lemon and ginger as I’m trying to shake off a cold, and was pleased to see that it was real lemon and ginger in the teapot rather than a teabag. Our floral themed desserts were very innovative, with a “dropped” rice pudding cone, a surprising parsnip cob, quince balls, and orange toast with spinach.
The pear and strawberry consommé and the emerald chocolate were the highlight for me, and the tempura rose petals set them off beautifully. All in all, a fitting end to our London in Bloom adventures! Afternoon tea is available every day from 2.30 to 5 pm at COMO The Halkin, for £32 per person or £36 with a glass of cava or a Sipsmith cocktail.
Do you have green fingers or are you more of a backseat gardener like me?

Brazil Travel Guide
Tall and tan and young and lovely The girl from Ipanema goes walking and
When she walks, she’s like a samba When she passes, each one she passes goes
O Brasil!
Miles and miles of golden coastline doing samba with the tropical rain-forest. The might of the Iguacu falls. The mystical men and mammals of the Amazon. The seduction of Salvador. Feisty jacares (alligators) of the Pantanal. The isolated beauty of Ilha Grande. Cachaça, O espírito de felicidade. The perennial Brazilian smile and the flirtatious Portuguese. And above all, god himself standing tall and smiling at his creation.
Where is it?

Cost: Rs. 6,400. (I paid $20 (~Rs. 1350) in Quito, Ecuador)

Why go there?
Beaches, Amazon, Culture, Party, Diversity, Jungle, Football, Cachaça, Samba, Waterfalls
Highlights
Rio de Janiero: The city that has it all. The statue of Christ the Redeemer, golden sands of Ipanema, cachaca at Copacabana, tropical rain-forest, infamous favellas, and samba from sunset till sunrise. Rio will breathe the carioca energy into you and make you dance to its tune
Amazon: The jungles of the Amazon hides mysterious creatures, untouched indigenous tribes and pristine flora. Amazon is every explorer’s dream and every child’s curiosity. Manaus in the north-west is the launching point into the Amazon
Foz do Iguacu: Enormous waterfall that boggles your imagination. You stand in the midst of water roaring down all the mountains around you. It makes your heart beat faster and leaves you teary-eyed with nature’s beauty flowing with the falls
Salvador de Bahía: Brasileños have a wild spirit of their own. In Salvador this wild spirit finds it’s African soul. Salvador was the first port of call for slaves from Africa. Thus, here you find the beautiful fusion of two cultures. Churches, capoeira, drumming and Bahian cuisine are the highlights here
Off The Beaten Path
Chapada Diamantina National Park: About 400 km west of Salvador de Bahia, this national park is an introduction to the other Brazil – dusty roads, dry landscape, and forgotten outposts. Chapada Diamantina has something for everyone – waterfalls, stalactite & stalagmite caves, 3000 year old cave paintings, trekking trails, snorkeling in marble caves and table-top mountains. Come here to indulge into a bit of Brazil beyond the beaches and jungles
Pantanal: The other jungle that gets overshadowed by the big brother Amazon. Pantanal is the largest tropical wetland in South America. The chances of seeing wildlife is higher here than the Amazon. Jaguars, capybaras (largest rodent), jacares (alligator), and hundreds of birds can be found in these wetlands. Tours leave from Cuiaba and Campo Grande in western Brazil
Other villages of Ilha Grande: Ilha Grande, an island with rain-forest, waterfalls, and golden beaches, is an off the beaten path destination in itself. But, if you want to go beyond the beyond, then skip avoid the crowds at Vila do Abraão. Rather spend time in one of the other villages – Dois Rios, Araçatiba or Lopes Mendes – to get an authentic island culture experience. Life in these villages feel a million miles away from the 21st century
Food and Beverage
Buffet: Restaurants all over Brazil have pay by kilo/pound buffet. There are a wide variety of vegetarian options to pick from. You pay according to the weight of your plate
Acaraje: A must try black-eyed peas and onion fritter fried in red palm oil, served with spicy sauce
Vatapá: Bread crumbs, ginger, pimenta malagueta, peanut butter and onions cooked in coconut milk and palm oil. Confirm with the seller that it doesn’t contain any meat
Creppe de Tapioca: A crepe of tapioca. A bit like dosa. You can add numerous toppings, sweet and savory, to the crepe
Acai Bowl: Food orgasm in the Brazilian way. A thick acai smoothie topped with tropical fruits and crunchy nuts. You just can’t have enough of this bowl of beauty
Pao de Queijo: Round bread with stuffed cheese. Goes well with Brazilian coffee
Arroz de Feijao: Your trusty old friend in South America – rice and beans. Ask the waiter if they make Feijao with meat. (Feijao tem carne? – Feijao has meat?)
Cafezinho: Liquidy coffee served in small glasses. Reminded me of cutting chai. Brazilians love sugar, so ask the server for less or no sugar. (um pouco acucar: less sugar) or (nao acucar: no sugar)
Cachaça: Since rum is too boring, Brazilians add a bit of their spirit to it. Cachaça is distilled from fresh sugarcane juice which gives it more body and flavor. Rum, on the other hand, is distilled from molasses. Cachaça from the state of Minas Gerais is very special
Caipirinha: Brazil in a glass – sweet with a bit of tang and the effervescent wild spirit. Cachaça, sugar and muddled lime served over ice. Sip a lot of this while soaking the sun as your feet rest on the silver sands
Infused Cachaça: Many bars infuse their cachaça with local fruits and herbs. They are served in shot glasses. I definitely advocate trying infusions of fruits, berries and herbs that you never heard before. My friend tried an aphrodisiac infusion and later 😉Drink of Immortality: Cachaça Aphrodisiacal Infusion
Destinations in Detail
Rio de Janeiro (Star Attraction)
“God made the world in six days; the seventh he devoted to Rio”
The words get lost in the silver sands of Copacabana beach. The sentences fall short of the Sugarloaf mountain. Alphabets aren’t enough to describe the seduction of Rio. When God himself is proudly smiling atop the city, what can a mere human say about the city.
Rio is sand, surf, samba, and sensuality. If you want to experience God’s own kingdom, do come.
Rio De Janeiro Travel Guide (Coming Soon)
Foz do Iguacu (Iguazu Falls)
“Water water everywhere, this is unlike anywhere”
It is hard to find words to describe the majesty, magnificence and the fantasismo of the Falls of Iguazu. As the bus winds closer to the falls, you hear the prowl and the roar of Iguazu. The first view will leave you wide-eyed, in awe of the sheer amount of water and the way it finds to unleash it’s might. Iguazu falls is a set of waterfalls spanning across 2 km on the Brazilian side. Once you get on the catwalk, you are truly in the cradle of Iguazu. Let go of yourself, the espirito magnetismo will glide you through the heart of the falls.
Chapada Diamantina National Park (Off The Beaten Path)
One of the truest off the beaten path experiences in Brasil. It is the Brasil you never imagine. Dustbowl, wild-wild-west, table-top hills, 500m deep stalactite caves and 3000 year old mysterious cave paintings. Chapada Diamantina is a national park that has it all. It can keep you busy for a week. And, here you will truly be exploring the other Brasil miles away from white-sand, samba, and neon-light parties.
Chapada Diamantina National Park Guide (Coming Soon)
Salvador de Bahia
Take the sexy modern Brasil and add half a bottle of 400 year old Africanism. You get a cultural cocktail to swarm your senses. Capoeira, a blend of martial-arts & dance is performed here in plazas. Bahian cuisine is an ode to western Africa and it will appeal to all tastes with unique dishes not found anywhere else in Brasil. The Salvadoran music and energy keep you up until the wee hours of the morning. And, the old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as well.
Bonito
Bonito in western Brasil is an eco-touristic dream. Snorkeling in crystal clear waters of a river with a wide variety of fresh-water fishes. Rappelling down a hole to enter a hidden lake. Visiting a Macaw nesting site. Bonito is a bit expensive in comparison to other places in Brasil.
Pantanal
The less popular but equally magnificent cousin to the Amazon, Pantanal is the largest wetland in the world. <Define marshland, have a page defining different ecosystems>. Pantanal is a sure-footed area to visit if you are interested in wildlife. Alligators sunbathe on riverbanks. Cute Capybara families, the largest rodent in the world, cross the roads. Giant anteaters, armadillos and tapirs are found sniffing the sands. And the creature that takes the crown here is the Jaguar. Yes, if you are lucky, you might spot a Jaguar in this land of submerged islands. If you are a John Grisham fan, then you must have heard about the Pantanal in his book ‘The Testament’
Sao Paulo
The financial heartbeat of the nation. It has couple of good museums, an alley with cool graffiti, and a local market selling fruits, vegetables, nuts, cheese, meat and restaurants serving Brazilian dishes. As an attraction in itself, I will recommend you SKIP IT.
Porto Alegre
Come this far south if you are heading to Uruguay. How to get to Uruguay from Porto Alegre (Coming Soon!)
