She was scared. These were feelings she’d never before felt. Kicked out at twelve and living and performing on the streets of Pyrite for the five years since, Clara was used to more than independence. She was used to solitude. Sure, Espi, and later Oracle, were there with her, but apart from that year with Yvette tutoring her, much of Clara’s time was spent in her own silence. 

But Kimmi–the ocean’s dancer made her feel something special. There was a warmth in her heart, the kind that she wasn’t quite sure how to describe. It was almost like talking to Caleb about magic, but something about it was different, too. Everything was brighter with Kimmi around. Her enthusiasm, her laugh, everything about Kimaru was infectious. And Clara was glad to catch it. 

But how was she supposed to respond? Would Kimmi really feel the same? Would she continue to listen to her silence, and accept it? The very people who should have loved her were unwilling to…but. Kimmi wasn’t her mother. Kimmi was special. 

She can’t remember a time when she felt needed If love was red then she was color blind All her friends they’ve been tried for treason And crimes that were never defined She’s saying, “Love is like a barren place, And reaching out for human faith is Is like a journey I just don’t have a map for” So baby’s gonna take a dive and Push the shift to overdrive Send a signal that she’s hanging All her hopes on the stars

There had been love in her life since it was taken away at such a young age. She had Espi, and then there was Yvette, who acted like the kind but firm parental Clara had always lacked. And then she’d been given Oracle, too. There was good in the world. There was kindness even on the streets. Maybe it was okay to open up. Maybe it was okay to tell Kimmi how she felt. 

Clara had, over time, begun to speak in front of Yvette when in private. It could happen, she knew this. So she didn’t want to commit to anything yet. Not until–not until she could speak to her. Because Kimmi deserved to hear the words.
