Odds and Ends:
LUMINOUS AQUATIC WHEELS
On the clear night of May 15, 1879, Commander J.E. Pringle and the crew of HMS Vulture, while in the Persian Gulf, observed a pair of "giant luminous wheels,” over forty yards in diameter, spinning above the water's surface. They were turning in opposite directions at seventy-five rotations per minute. From the mizzen top, it could be seen that the phosphorescent wheels were traveling parallel and sinking into the water, lighting up the bottoms of the quarter boats as they passed under the boat. The spectacle lasted just over half an hour.
In May 1880, Captain Avern and his third officer aboard the British East India Company steamer, the Patna, had a similar experience. Near 11:30 p.m., on a dark night, enormous luminous wheels appeared on either side of the ship; each wheel contained sixteen spokes 250 yards long and were clearly visible all the way around. The spinning circles seemed to touch the ship's side and escorted the vessel for more than fifteen minutes.
In May 1983, Chief Officer P. Newton, commanding the MV Mahsuri, was navigating through the Gulf of Oman when a luminous green shimmer appeared on the horizon. The glow became parallel bands of blue-green light, five yards wide and over 150 yards long. The bands then expanded into horizontal circles spinning just above the water. Astonished, Newton watched silently, wrestling with the feeling that he should duck as a randomly flashing light show surrounded the vessel. Pale green and gold bands continually changed into wheels and disappeared unpredictably off in the distance, only to be replaced with another set. The ship seemed to be accompanied by the center of the circles until it crossed a distinct, but undefined barrier.

Tumblr media
her relations page is currently under construction , however click here and you are lead to find her profile page . excited to get this rolling with everybody , give this post a heart for me to come knocking at your door ! no discord , so plotting will be done here !  ☹️
her profile page is not mobile friendly , so here is a little rundown !
Full Name: suhani patil .
Nickname(s): hani / sometimes honey since it sounds similar .
Former School/House: beauxbatons academy of magic / papillonlisse .
FC: deepika padukone / actress .
DOB: october 23rd , 1953 .
Age: 27 .
Gender: cisfemale .
Orientation: pansexual .
Blood Status: pureblood .
Patronus: swan .
Side: the order .
originally , suhani was born into the shenai family , pureblood aristocracy with roots in the western coastline of india , but were spread out all across the globe . the shenai’s lived in paris , but went back home nearly every other week for business and to do whatever rich people do . they were the kind of people who were known for being powerful and rich , not really knowing where it comes from . they were essentially old money and highly reputable and respected bit . suhani is their second eldest , and a kind of daughter they were not exactly expecting .
she’s supposed to be obedient like her eldest , sit and smile when need be , have an air with a regal aroma to it surrounding her , and be as much of a prized possession as a diamond encased in a glass box . but suhani wasn’t their typical daughter , she preferred to run wild in the family estate and get mud all over custom made silk dresses , twigs and leaves sticking out of her hair . she ends up learning how to crash important family meetings rather than learn how to play the violin ( she opted for the piano , instead ) and was a tall tale of a girl . she wasn’t afraid of anything .
from an early age , she demanded women ( especially those in her family ) to be known more than just homemakers or wives who stood silently next to their s/o’s . she had high , dreamy opinions and she made them known to anyone who asked , and those who didn’t . she wanted to be something larger than life , and instead became the shenai’s worst nightmare , particularly to her mother . her mother wanted all her children to marry rich , settle down and have children . that had been her only goal and suhani made it impossible each time , always speaking out of turn and arguing with her in regards to her future . she never , ever wanted anyone to think they could pick how she chose to live her life . the decision to go to beauxbaton came naturally , she wanted to get away from everyone . the only people she kept dear to her heart was her grandmother and siblings , which made going away hard , but the excitement of this big blue world made it worth it .
upon graduating , she decided to travel the world and do #richgirlthings while she’s figuring out who she is and the journey she wants to partake in . she relocated to london primarily because the war finally gave her a reason to fight for something and was of her own choice , but was an excuse to settle somewhere , even for a little . it’s not known to her parents and she keeps it as hush hush as possible , as they’d take her right back home . it’s terrifying and exhilarating all at once , sort of like suhani herself .

Fallen Through Time - Chapter 10
Tumblr media
Sherlock dozed on and off throughout the night, as comfortable on the sofa as he would have been in his bed. Mostly he attempted to occupy his mind. John’s medical journals were relatively interesting and he had made remarkably modern notes in the margins of some of them. Scrawled near an account of John Snow’s discovery of the source of an outbreak of cholera in 1854, John Watson had written: Mr. T. Carlton ‒ recently returned from India. Small ep. Typhoid, Poplar 1890. MUST WASH HANDS! And he had crossed out several lines of text detailing the negative effects of female hysteria and had written between the rows: Husbands unable to understand female anatomy blame marital issues on mental imbalance. Have these women not suffered enough? That one made Sherlock snort with laughter.
To his credit, John had attempted to remain awake with Sherlock to help him with the case and to keep him from getting bored. But it was no use ‒ he was merely human. A remarkable human, Sherlock thought as he watched John’s chest rise and fall steadily where he lay on the sofa. Contrary to Mycroft’s assessment of Sherlock’s opinion of himself, he had always felt that he was rather less than human, not more. More than one person ‒ professional or simply pissed off ‒ had accused Sherlock of having a superiority complex when, in fact, he had long believed himself to be disappointingly inferior.
Don’t start down that path again, he chided silently. This is no time for a pity party. No, it was not. It was the time for Work. Two cases ‒ his own and that of the serial “suicides” ‒ lay before him, in desperate need of his mental acuity.
Hours passed. Ideas came and went. Facts and tidbits swam to the surface of his mind and sank back down once he had examined them thoroughly. He needed a smoke, but decided to content himself with poking about the flat.
Most everything was laid out in the same order as in his own time, except for the little touches of John that were scattered about the place. He was more orderly than Sherlock. Interesting. Military training, I expect. His bed was done up with tight, hospital corners and an old revolver ‒ likely a service weapon ‒ lay at the top of his bedside drawer. Inside a black case tucked under the bureau was a clarinet, clearly unplayed in more than a decade, along with a note which read Give it up! ‒ Harry. John’s wardrobe was as expected, though fingering through the hanging tweeds and wools in the cabinet brought a tiny smile to Sherlock’s face. Tucked in the back was his old uniform, the bright red of his jacket barely faded. The fabric was dotted with little bars and medals and insignia, each one detailing aspects of John yet undiscovered by Sherlock. Victoria Cross, “most conspicuous bravery”; Distinguished Service Order, “active operations against the enemy”; Distinguished Conduct Medal, “gallantry in the field”, earned before promotion to Captain; Afghanistan Medal and Kabul to Kandahar Star. Nothing to say of his injury. But John did not strike Sherlock as the sort of man to put his injury on display, even if such things were given out.
Sherlock tucked the uniform away and went back downstairs. John’s medical kit was by the door, ready for any situation. The bathroom contained the typical accoutrements of bachelorhood ‒ one practical bar of all-over soap, one large towel for hands and body, an empty cup for late-night drinks of water, and a small tin of charcoal tooth powder and what appeared to be a homemade toothbrush. Sitting on a small shelf below the mirror was a shave kit, complete with foaming soap, a soft-bristle brush, and a long straight razor.
Running a hand across his own chin and cheek, Sherlock pursed his lips at the blade. He could do with a shave, but he had never used anything but safety razors. Mycroft had tried to teach him to use a straight razor when he was younger, their father being too busy to do so himself, but Sherlock found his hands shook with apprehension. He knew too well how close his arteries were to the thin surface of his skin and the notion of placing a knife to his own throat was one which unnerved him from the word “go”.
“Why the dark face?” John’s voice caused Sherlock to jump embarrassingly. He was leaning against the doorframe in his trousers and vest, looking devilishly handsome with his braces hanging about his thighs, watching Sherlock with a mix of curiosity and amusement.
“I need a shave,” Sherlock replied, his heart rate returning to normal.
“Well, that’s hardly call for such a serious expression,” John laughed. “Feel free, I don’t mind.” He gestured casually toward the shave kit before pushing away from the door, making toward the kitchen.
“Could you ‒” Sherlock called out and John stepped back, eyebrow raised. “Could you…” Sherlock blinked a few times and stared down at the razor in his hand. “I’ve never used one of these before.” John tilted his head in surprise, but his expression bore no judgement and for that, Sherlock was relieved.
“Of course. Just…” he held up a finger, stepped into the kitchen, and Sherlock heard him putting the kettle on. A stool and tea towel in hand, John returned to the bathroom and gestured for Sherlock to sit. Back out into the kitchen he went to await the heating of water, and Sherlock took up his perch and watched his own impatient face in the mirror. After their romp on the sofa the evening before, Sherlock and John had each only half-dressed in their trousers and undershirts. He pulled his vest over his head and dropped it on a peg by the door just as John returned with a steaming kettle, not quite boiled. He stoppered the sink and poured the water in so that steam billowed up and around the two of them.
“How would you like me?” Sherlock asked, trying to sound casual and flirtatious rather than nervous and exposed. John smirked at him through the mirror.
“Just as you are is perfect.” He stepped up behind Sherlock and he could feel the firm warmth of his chest against his shoulder blades. John worked the soap cake into a thick foam with the brush before spreading it heavily over Sherlock’s jaw, the fingers of his free hand gently tilting him back and forth. Then, he dipped the razor into the steaming water and raised the blade with a gentle and knowing hand. He held it almost as Sherlock held the bow of his violin. “Just relax,” he said softly and Sherlock did.
At the first gentle glide of the blade across his neck, Sherlock let his eyes fall closed. The soap smelled of sandalwood and lanolin and John’s warm hand was steadying his jaw and Sherlock thought he had never felt more comfortable in all his life. John had him.
It was painfully intimate, to put his life and his care into John’s hands so readily. But there it was. Sherlock trusted him. With a gentle press of his fingertips, John tilted Sherlock’s head the other way and began shaving at the left side of his throat in short efficient strokes. Sherlock’s eyes fluttered open and he watched John in the mirror, an expression of intense concentration on his handsome face. After a moment, John looked up and caught Sherlock’s gaze in his own, a heated grin pulling at his lips. He cleared the spot below Sherlock’s left ear of stubble and soap before bending down and placing a damp kiss just above his pulse. “Not one for beards, then?”
Sherlock hmm-ed as John rinsed the razor. Moving his jaw as little as possible as John resumed his ministrations, Sherlock answered, “No, never been much for facial hair, myself.”
“More’s the pity,” John mused. “I think you might look good with a beard.”
“I like yours,” Sherlock replied, fascinated by the deft movement of John’s fingers. “And I generally prefer my doctors clean-shaven.”
John chuckled. “I was thinking of being rid of mine. Sometimes I feel I’m starting to go a bit ragged.”
“‘Rugged’ is the word, more like,” Sherlock said in a low tone. He did like John’s beard. He liked how it felt against his skin when John kissed him. He wondered with an undisguisable flush how it would feel against other parts of his body.
“Rugged.” John ran his free hand over his own beard and smirked into the mirror. “I quite like the sound of that.” He pulled the razor in downward motions now, starting at Sherlock’s cheekbone and moving toward his chin. How he knew when to change direction was completely beyond Sherlock’s comprehension. With Sherlock’s head tilted to the left, John reached forward and rinsed the blade again, dropping a warm kiss to the plane of Sherlock’s throat as he leaned around him. “Even without a beard, you look incredible.” Another swipe along his jawbone, another little kiss, and Sherlock’s pulse was increasing steadily. “You are incredible. I could stand here all day, tasting your jaw, your throat.” His tongue darted out to the jumping pulse point in Sherlock’s neck and drew out a soft moan. “Tasting every inch of you.”
Sherlock swallowed carefully. “I’d rather you finished with the razor first.”
John let out a little breath of laughter against Sherlock’s neck, expertly drawing the blade away before Sherlock twitched at the sensation. He resumed shaving him properly, though his free hand had dropped to Sherlock’s sternum. The blade swooped efficiently over his chin before John moved to stand in front of Sherlock.
Without a trace of hesitation, John dropped one leg over Sherlock’s lap and sat across his thighs, drawing a surprised gasp from the detective beneath him as their groins came into contact. A low-watt arousal buzzed between them as John gently pulled Sherlock’s head back by his hair. Sherlock’s hands fell instinctively to John’s hips and squeezed lightly. John’s thumb traced languidly over Sherlock’s bottom lip before he carefully insinuated the razor just below, slicing away the stubble in the swell of his chin. Finally, he adjusted his arm and commenced to ridding Sherlock of his sparse moustache. John dropped the razor into the sink without looking around, wiped the last vestiges of lather from Sherlock’s face and neck with the tea towel, and leaned in to kiss Sherlock full on the mouth.
It was glorious ‒ slow and humid and warm and Sherlock moaned into John’s mouth, delighting in the echo of the small bathroom. John tugged at Sherlock’s hair again and made for his neck, now smooth and soft and sensitive to the bristles of John’s beard. He kissed and tongued his way from Sherlock’s ear to the dip in his clavicle, careful to brush as much of his facial hair against Sherlock’s sensitive skin as possible.
“If you haven’t any further need of my barbering services…” John murmured against Sherlock’s chest, letting the thought trail away in a shared huff of arousal. Sherlock let out a long, low hum as John slid from his lap and onto his knees between the stool and the sink. He nipped at the flesh before him as he slowly drew down Sherlock’s trousers until they pooled on the floor. No pants. Sherlock couldn’t be arsed before and he couldn’t have been happier now.
With a teasing exhalation of warm breath over his erection, John’s tongue darted out to taste the head of Sherlock’s cock. Sherlock bit his lip, buried one hand in John’s hair and grasped desperately at the rim of the sink with the other. Arching forward, Sherlock watched as John slowly licked his way up Sherlock’s length before taking him almost completely down his throat.
It was ungodly, how amazing John looked on his knees in front of Sherlock. And he felt unbelievably better, the wet heat of his mouth almost too much for Sherlock to bear. He wanted nothing more than to stare at John as he worked his way ever lower on Sherlock’s erection, but as he finally swallowed Sherlock completely, his eyes closed and his head fell back with a delirious moan.
John’s beard felt even more amazing than Sherlock had anticipated, the sharp bristles tickling the creases of his thighs as John bobbed up and down. His skin was alight with the sensation and his toes curled against the cold tile floor and Sherlock could feel his orgasm building from almost every nerve in his body, swirling down toward his groin.
“John — ah — st-stop, please,” Sherlock begged, his hands simultaneously pushing and pulling at John’s head. John pulled away and looked at Sherlock with concern.
“Is everything alright?” He looked an absolute wet dream, his thin lips swollen and red, a drip of pre-cum clinging obscenely to his tongue. Sherlock bit his lower lip at the sight of him and reeled in his arousal.
“Just… too close,” he panted. “Don’t want to cum just yet.”
John’s face relaxed into a bit of a smirk. “I thought that was the whole idea.” Leaning forward, he rubbed his rough cheek against Sherlock’s inner thigh, eliciting another moan from the detective above him. It tickled in the most erotic way, sending shivers through Sherlock’s entire body. And John’s warm, deliberate breaths against his balls were still very nearly too much.
“God, John,” he groaned, low and deep, “I want you to fuck me.”
He hadn’t meant to say that. It was very, very true, but he was given to understand that two days, two snogs, a bit of frottage, and an incomplete blowjob was not necessarily “enough” to warrant full sexual penetration. People normally led up to that sort of thing with absolute ages of heavy petting and “getting to know one another first.” But John Watson made Sherlock want to take up the ridiculous notion of religion just so that he could thank someone for the incredible man before him.
John stood from the floor and, to Sherlock’s surprise, cupped his face with both hands and stared down with eyes so blue they might as well have been black. “Say that again.”
Sherlock swallowed. No going back now. “I want you to fuck me.”
With a barely-restrained growl, John pounced, his tongue delving deep into Sherlock’s mouth with an unprecedented fervour. Sherlock moaned into his mouth, spreading his knees on his perch so that John could grind against him again and it was glorious. John’s hands dropped to Sherlock’s hips, pulling him from the stool and onto shaky legs. Tugging him toward the door, John moved his lips across Sherlock’s jaw and murmured against his skin, “Keep talking.”
Sherlock was all-too-happy to oblige. He dropped his voice an octave and said, “John, I want you to fuck me. Hard. And fast.”
“Hng… yes,” John moaned as they stumbled through the kitchen and toward Sherlock’s room. Barely breaking their embrace, John’s hand flew out and grabbed a half-empty bottle of olive oil from the counter. They continued toward the bedroom, lurching backward and forth against each other. John’s ministrations on Sherlock’s throat were merciless, nipping and sucking bites and bruises all along the pale column of sensitive flesh as Sherlock continued to speak.
“I want your fingers inside me, stretching me, filling me, until I’m desperate for your cock,” he breathed against John’s ear and felt his moan more than heard it. “Then I want ‒ need you to thrust into me with everything you’ve got until I’m begging you to let me cum.”
“Jesus Christ,” John’s voice came out in a ragged exhalation as they finally crossed the threshold into the bedroom. None-too-gently, he pushed Sherlock backward until he tumbled onto the bed. John clambered on top of him, kissed him deeply, and sat back on his heels, taking in the sight before him. Sherlock knew he must look a complete and total slag, legs splayed open, cock hard and leaking, chest heaving with need, but he could not care less. The only thing that mattered was that John was pouring olive oil onto two of his fingers and crawling over him again.
At the first deft slide of John’s finger, Sherlock’s head flew back so far that his back arched. A few testing thrusts and John pulled away, only to redouble his efforts with a second finger. He scissored the digits apart, stretching Sherlock’s hole before pressing upward against his prostate with expert precision. Sherlock’s vision went hazy around the edges
“Oh, fuck ‒ fuck!” Sherlock’s hands tightened against the bed clothes so hard that it hurt his knuckles. His heels hit the mattress and he thrust his hips upward just as John slipped a third finger inside him. John clapped his free hand on Sherlock’s hip and drove his fingers hard into Sherlock’s channel. “God! John ‒ fuck me, fuck me ‒ ah ‒ now!”
John chuckled. Chuckled! How on earth could he be so composed? Sherlock was melting under his hands and John’s expression was predatory, but in control. “Demanding thing, aren’t you?”
“I know what I want,” Sherlock panted, working his hips downward on John’s touch.
“So do I.” John kissed him hard, removed his fingers, and swallowed Sherlock’s moan. He sat back again and poured a generous amount of oil over his thick cock, giving himself a perfunctory stroke before gripping Sherlock’s hip with his free hand. “Turn over.”
Sherlock flipped onto his stomach with embarrassing speed, drawing up his knees and lifting his arse. He dropped his head to the mattress and took a firm grip on the covers, waiting eagerly for John to get on with it. Thankfully, John did not dally. He pressed the blunt head of his cock against Sherlock’s hole and pressed forward in one slow, deliberate thrust.
It was like a punch to the gut ‒ it left Sherlock breathless and shaking. But he needed more. He pressed his hips backward, but John’s hands squeezed into his buttocks and he let out a harsh breath. “Just ‒ just give me a second.” Sherlock nodded, fighting the nearly-overwhelming impulse to rut backward and fuck himself senseless on John’s prick. After a moment, John leaned forward, pressed a kiss to Sherlock’s spine, and finally began to move.
It was too slow, too shallow. “God, John, come on!”
John’s voice in his ear made him shudder. “Beg.”
His brain stuttered. “What?”
“You heard me. Beg.”
“Nng ‒ John! Please! Fuck me! Hard ‒ like you mean it!” John picked up the pace and Sherlock let out an obscene moan. “God… I need it ‒ I need your cock. Make me cum, please! Make me cum…”
“Ah! Fuck!” John pounded into Sherlock, brushing brutally past his prostate with every thrust and forcing shallow huffs from the incredible man beneath him. Leaning forward and covering Sherlock’s entire back with his body, John sank his teeth into the flesh of Sherlock’s shoulder and let out an animalistic growl. He wrapped one hand around Sherlock’s erection and it only took three firm pulls before he was cumming all over the mattress with an obscene shout. “Jesus Christ, Sherlock!”
He could feel John’s release inside him, feel him tense and force himself impossibly further into Sherlock’s willing body. It was unbelievable. It was glorious. It was transcendent.
For all Sherlock knew, they could have remained in that position for seconds or hours, he on his knees with John pressing kisses to his back, before John pulled out. “God,” he moaned, running his hands along Sherlock’s waist, “you’re amazing.”
Sherlock’s brain was completely offline. He slumped bonelessly onto his stomach and John followed him down, panting against Sherlock’s shoulder. “‘Markable…”
“Come again?”
“I don’t think I can.” John’s laugh was an exhausted little exhalation against Sherlock’s skin. Sherlock swallowed and caught his breath. “I said you’re remarkable.”
“I don’t know about all that,” John answered modestly.
“John, I am an incredibly intelligent man. I have studied a myriad of subjects from chemistry to math to philosophy and psychology, so let me assure you that when I determine someone to be remarkable it is not only a rare thing, but a sure thing.” He said all this in as dignified a tone as he could muster while his cheek was pressed lazily against the bedclothes. “Wake me in an hour ‒ we have much to do today.”
Another little chuckle. “As I said ‒ demanding.”

Sleep Is For The Weak - Chapter 2
Previous Chapters: Prologue, Chapter 1
Notes (I guess): I am equally in love and in deep hate with some (a lot) of what’s going on in here, and I am terribly, terribly sorry. And also there are some characters I wanted to explore a bit further than what had been in this part, but... I’m working on it. Give it a bit and I’ll get there. Again, credit to @broadwaytheanimatedseries for screaming at me to write this, and to @whatwashernameagain for Keep Him Safe, and also a tiny tiny lil bit to @anony-phangirl and @asleepybisexual for their general support and for being such great sports about me annoying them with my ideas... (oops).
(I’m trying to find a way to write my notes, so bear with me until I find a way to… it might take a hot minute.)
(KHS) Tag List (sort of): @em-be-lievable, @ultimate-queen-of-fandoms2, @adoratato, @supremestoverlord, @royallyanxious, @madly-handsome, @hanramz-the-fander, @the-incedible-sulk, @poisonedapples, @virge-of-a-breakdown, @winglessnymph, @princeanxious, @smokeyrutilequartz, @im-bad-at-life (if any of you could tag the rest, please do! I’m improving my memory from day to day, but… yeah…)
Tag list: @bunny222, @ab-artist, @secretlyanxiouspersona
Trigger warning: period appropriate transphobia (the early 00s were not exactly trans-friendly). This chapter in particular includes some very heavy misgendering and deadnaming (if you get what I’m saying). Please be careful.

Science of Living Systems 20 actually wasn't as bad as Remy thought it would be. It was rather cool, actually.
Well, at least he hoped it was.
The head of the department was… an interesting individual. Remy met with him during the application process. The man insisted on calling him "Miss Harris" and speaking to and about him in girl pronouns, and Remy understood why.
For some reason, though, Remy expected all the professors to be like that. And not such was the case.
"Rebecca Harris, I want to see you later in my office."
Doctor Gilliam was in his late thirties, called everyone by their first and last names, thought that being single was hilarious, made really bad puns in his lectures (though Remy heard, not as much outside of them), and tried his best to be "hip with the kids". It was worrying, to say the least. And… yeah, Remy was slightly terrified.
"I'm kind of worried, kid," Gilliam said the moment Remy walked in. "You don't look too-"
"Excuse me, Doctor, but I don't know what this is about."
"Have you heard about shadows and personae, Rebecca Harris?" Remy shook his head, terrified to say a word. "Well, it's quite an interesting concept. According to Carl Jung, you'll learn about him later, the persona is the mask you wear in the world. It's what you want others to see. The shadow is your innermost self, the parts of your identity that you wish to hide from others."
"Okay, and?"
"I think your persona might be cracking."
What… was going on?
"I'm not making sense, am I? I'm sorry. There's a lot that goes into that theory and I shouldn't confuse you this much, at least not until we get to it."
Yeah… it was weird.
"So, my point is… you can talk to me if anything is making you uncomfortable, okay?"
"Okay… I guess."
"Well, that is all," Doctor Gilliam said, fixing his glasses.
That… was weird. But okay. If that's how he wants to do things. Remy wasn't going to complain.
He was definitely better than the head of department.
There was a knock at the door.
Abby, their RA, was over earlier. Apparently Katherine had a bit of a scene right after class. So naturally, Remy assumed it would be Abby. No one else could be knowing on their door at ten thirty pm-
"We don't have your bunny this time. You can go."
Oh.
"Oh, no, I just…" Remy could hear that… kid? Whatever his name was, from the door. "I just need… I need someone to help me with something. And…"
"Oh. Remy can help."
"No I can't," Remy replied. "I need sleep and so do you!"
"It won't take long, I promise!"
"...fine." Remy got off the couch - the nice, comfy couch, where there was a blanket and his sols20 book - to the door. Where that kid (Emile? Emile) was looking at him with those big blue eyes and…
Yeah, Remy regretted unbinding. (Well, no. He did not. But also kind of did.)
"Hey… Rebecca, right—"
"His name is Remy."
Emile seemed shocked for a moment. Oh shit. "Oh, I'm so sorry! I didn't know. I just… I see you in most of my classes, so… never mind. So… how are you with baking?"
"So my sister Julie is LaVeyan—"
"Aren't we supposed to be baking cookies, babe?"
"Yeah, but… the stuff's all in the cabinets and I'm looking!"
Emile was a disaster child, Remy decided after only five minutes alone together. He brought a violin and his bunny to the kitchen in the pursuit of baking cookies - like, what even? - and he just seemed so… energetic? Happy? Whatever the word was. A couple minutes ago he was talking about the cookies, sure, but then he switched it to the importance of guided imagery, and then why Li Shang from Mulan is bisexual, and now… what was he even talking about?
"So my sister is a LaVeyan Satanist," Emile repeated himself, almost climbing on the counter to reach a cabinet. "It's kinda funny, actually. My dad's side of the family are all Catholic, and— can you put the sugar on the countertop, please? Thank you!"
"Sweetie, for the eleventh time this past ten minutes, I understand nothing you're saying."
"Am I speaking another language or something? Because if so I'm sorry!"
"No, it's just…" How does he not hurt his feelings? "It's just… you talk fast and about a lot of subjects at the same time."
"Oh. Okay. Sorry."
Maybe he thought Remy couldn't hear, but there was definitely a "this is just one of the things that are wrong about me" thrown in the air.
Emile didn't speak to him for the rest of the process. Maybe once or twice he pointed out a step or an ingredient, but overall he did not speak. At all. And then the cookies were in the oven…
And then he pulled out his violin.
"Is this really necessary?"
"I'm not talking to you."
"Emile, is it because of something I said?" Emile, still pouting (as he had been for a good hour and some now), nodded. "Well, I'm sorry. Please don't silent treatment me."
"I talk too fast and too much."
"Not what I said. I just said I can't follow you. I didn't say it's your fault. Please don't—"
Emile pretty much just ignored Remy (uhh, rude!) and positioned his violin, and started to play something… quite angrily.
After a minute and a half Remy recognized it as Once Upon a Dream from Sleeping Beauty.
After another three minutes, he dared open his mouth again. "I'm sorry I said that. I didn't mean to. Do you accept my apology?"
"...fine."
It was not fine. Absolutely not.
"Thanks for the help with the cookies," he said as they separated at the top of the stairs, all one-hundred-and-ninety cookies (Emile insisted on quadrupling the recipe) safely packed in plastic boxes and hidden away. "I… I'm gonna go now."
"Emile, please." He turned around, still looking quite pissed. (It was probably the hour, Remy tried telling himself. It's already past one am. This is not good.) "Are you mad that I said I'm confused?"
"To be honest with you, yes! Yes, I'm mad. I know it wasn't your intention but I heard you say shut the fuck up when you said that. And it hurt. Very badly."
...oh.
"I'm going to forgive you, but it's going to take me a bit, so please don't be mad at me, okay?" Emile honestly looked close to tears. "Good night, Remy. I'll see you in living systems tomorrow."
And then he went to his suite, violin and bunny with him.
Remy just got himself into a huge mess.
It was a beautiful afternoon in Boston when Remy found himself at the rather posh Italian place his mom wanted to meet at.
Before their divorce in late 1999, just after Remy turned fifteen, his father started contacting a charity organization dedicated to help transgender youth. He educated himself. Tried to educate his wife as well. But… apparently it was the last straw for Linda. The very night he tried to even just explain that it's not her fault, that it's how he was born, she packed up her things and left.
The divorce papers came in less than two months later. The divorce was finalized in November 1999. Remy did not see her since.
(Yeah… that was a lie. He actually hasn't seen her since Christmas 2001. But that was still a very long time. Almost a year is a long time.)
"Well, at least the weather's nice." And there she was with her new boy toy. Glamorous as ever, with her stupidly huge sunglasses and her bright red (disgustingly fake, makes India's hair seem real) curly bob, looking exactly the same as she did that day Remy came out to her.
A few hours later, though. When she thought he was asleep and left the house to go to some party.
"Well, at least you're still not very nice, Linda," he said with a smirk as he sat down next to her boy toy (he actually looks kinda nice, for a forty-something year old). "But much unlike the weather, I don't think this is a thing that can change so easily."
"Where are your manners, Rebecca?"
"The same place those diamond earrings you forgot when you left us are. At home with Dad, probably watching South Park."
"Well, at least we left the girls at home." Linda took off her sunglasses and replaced them with a normal, frameless pair of glasses. "I don't believe you met Stephen before, Rebecca."
"I don't believe I've met a Rebecca before, Linda."
"Are you ready to order?"
It took about two minutes for all the orders to place (of course Stephen had to order something overly fancy, because why the fuck not) before she started yapping again.
"Rebecca, I didn't ask to see you for you to be so rude to me."
"I didn't ask to see you, period."
"What would you like to be called, then?" Stephen asked. Well…
"Remy. My name is Remy."
"Your name is—"
"My name is not Rebecca! I haven't gone by that name since I was fourteen. Dad never called me that since the day I asked him to call me Remy. You're the only one who ever insisted, how do you think it made me feel?"
"How do you think it made me feel, Rebecca?" Remy hoped no one was looking. "My own daughter. I jeopardized my own high school graduation to have you because your father was dumb enough to forget the condoms. I gave up life-long dreams just to raise you, because that retard of a father you have couldn't. Is this how you repay me?"
There was a very awkward silence, that was broken by an unfamiliar voice - deep, with a southern drawl - and a confused "Rebecca?"
India. Without her makeup, her hair pulled back.
Looking almost perfectly manly.
"Excuse me?" Linda straightened her glasses, glaring at India. Oh, how Remy did not want this to happen… "And you are?"
"Ian McGinty, ma'am. I'm her boyfriend."
Oh.
"Your father didn't tell me you have a boyfriend," Linda spoke slowly.
"Because he doesn't know everything. And my name is still Remy."
"Ethan and I are gonna go now," India said, her voice still lower, still more southern than normal. "Text me when you're done, we'll go get ice cream?"
"...sure."
And then she leaned down and said, in the voice Remy grew to know and absolutely adore, "we're going to talk about this. Don't worry, I got your back."
And then she was gone.
"So a boyfriend, huh?"
"...so how many men have you fucked before meeting Stephen, Linda?"
"I'm so sorry about your mom, baby."
India's brother, Ethan, looked nothing like her. Well, he looked like a more manly, less boyish version of ‘manly' India, but also nothing alike. He also didn't talk much. So that was fun.
India took them to get ice cream indeed. (And much like her music taste, her favorite ice cream flavors - burnt caramel and earl grey - were rather… interesting. But she did swear that Toscanini's was probably the best ice cream in Cambridge, and who was Remy to argue with her?)
"It's alright. She's always been like this."
"Doesn't make it alright." Ethan grunted in agreement. "Take it from me, Remy. It's never alright."
"Does he have an Esther?"
India's eyes rolled so far back. "Do you think that every trans person have to have an Esther, Ethan? Do you truly think it's how we realize our identity?"
"It's how you did yours."
"I knew I'm a girl since the moment I understood who I am. Any related accidents after that are purely incidental."
"India, I think I fucked up." She looked up at him from her half-melted ice cream cup. "I told you about Emile, right?"
"You're still stuck on that?" Remy nodded. "Look… that kid told you he forgives you. You saw him in class since then, he didn't say anything to you… you're doing fine, sweetie."
"Is that his real boyfriend?"
"Ethan, shut the fuck up or I'll call mom. Remy…" India turned to play with his hair.
Yeah, it was very calming.
"He sounds like a very sweet kid. Trust me, there's no way you fucked anything up. You'll be okay. You'll get to hang out with him again, and it will be okay. Now eat your ice cream, you have the best ice cream, and then we're going back to your dorm and we're going to watch Priscilla. Or Hedwig. Whatever suits your fancy, okay?"
"...okay."
"Now, let's talk more about your mom and why it isn't okay that she treats you like that."
And for a bit, everything just seemed alright. Well, almost.

My first Indian music festival!
Tumblr media
Here in Visakhapatnam, we held a 6-day celebration called “Thyagaraja Aradhana,” where students, amateurs, and professionals performed Saint Thyagaraja’s works at the historic Kalabharati Auditorium. I sang a 10-minute solo set, and enjoyed getting to see my mentor and teachers, Dr. Pantula Rama, Dr. Krishnaveni, Jagadamba Madam, and Tyagaraj Sir perform too! It was an honor to perform on the same stage as so many inspiring artists.
On the first evening of the concert, MSN Murthy Sir and Dr. Pantula Rama kicked off the festival with a program called “Violin Rainbow.” The program featured seven violinists, led by the virtuosic MSN Murthy Sir, in creative arrangements of popular compositions of Saint Thyagaraja. I loved getting to see an Indian“chamber orchestra” take the stage.
I was enthralled by the chemistry between the artists, the gorgeous solos each musician took, and the breathtaking moments of harmony that broke the surface like ripples in a pond. Indian music is a melodically driven form of music (harmony rarely occurs!), so when flashes of chords would glimmer through the composition it just took my breath away. Together, the artists created an elegant and auspicious beginning to the festival.
The next morning, all of Visakhapatnam’s prominent singers and instrumentalists joined forces to perform Saint Thyagaraja’s most famous work, the Pancharatna Krithis- a spectacular five moment piece in five different ragas. Although most Carnatic music is meant to be sung or performed by a soloist, this is a work meant for large groups to perform together (so obviously my inner choral nerd was freaking out...!). Growing up, I attended the Thyagaraja Aradhana festival held in Portland (Thyagaraja’s works are truly timeless and boundless), and my favorite part was always the chorus performing the Pancharatna Krithis. However, this chorus and orchestra was at a whole new level— in Portland, we used to hear amateurs and students sing. In Visakhapatnam, I witnessed some of the world’s leading Carnatic musicians singing and playing together in a glorious opening to this historic event.
On Day 3, it was my turn to perform! My mom extended her India trip to watch my performance, and I am so grateful for her love and support (thanks Amma!). I wore my new half-sari, the traditional outfit that young women perform in, and got one run-through with my percussionist and violinist before I went on stage. The way that Carnatic music is performed is very similar to jazz— good accompanists know lots of compositions and are always ready to play at a moment‘s notice. Skilled musicians often don’t rehearse together ahead of time. My violinist, mridangist, and I settled ourselves on the stage and I switched on the “shruti box” or drone that accompanies all classical Indian music. I took a deep breath, sent a silent prayer of gratitude into the hall (a practice inspired by my dear youth choir director, Mia Hall Miller), and began to sing. During my performance, my sweet teacher, Jagadamba Madam, sat in the first row, smiling encouragingly, and keeping time along with me. As a novice in the Carnatic art form, I was very touched, and very grateful for her support! ( I was so touched by her kindness— I really have the best teachers!
Tumblr media
Looking back, it was by no means a perfect performance. Listening to the recording, I picked out some tuning errors, and a some moments where my tempo faltered.
But, I’m okay with that. :)
I started Carnatic music five months ago. A year ago, I never would have imagined that I would be studying a completely new form of music in a foreign country. India has been a fresh start, and an opportunity for me to build healthier thought patterns around how I practice and perform music. I accept that musical progress is not always a straight line; there are peaks and valleys. I recognize that I am a musician, but my musical performance has no bearing on my self-perception or character. Lastly, and most importantly, I revel in the knowledge that music is FUN. The success of a performance is based on how much I enjoyed myself, not on how many notes I sang correctly, or the audience’s reaction, or even what my teachers or family thought about it. I know this might sound obvious, but for me, these are new realizations that are just beginning to liberate me from a lifetime of anxiety and doubt. If you’ve ever felt this way, I’d love to hear from you— I validate and honor your story!
“Thyagaraja Aradhana,” was a memorable milestone for me. Six days of gorgeous music and the opportunity to perform a solo were important reminders that I’m in the right place, and a sign to keep singing, loving, and teaching passionately and joyfully!

2018 Movie Odyssey
That is time on the 2018 Movie Odyssey. Though the number of total films I saw increased this year, that was mostly because of a stratospheric rise in short films I saw - thanks to my time at the 2018 Viet Film Fest and Turner Classic Movies’ (TCM) decision in March to begin airing one classic Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) short and a Popeye short every Saturday morning except in August and select Saturdays. I saw two hundred and sixty-two films in their entirety that were completely new to me this year - 156 feature-length films (includes one serial) and 107 short films. The number of features was expected to go down this year because of the Winter Olympics in February and the FIFA World Cup in June/July. With only the Women’s World Cup in June/July 2019, maybe there’ll be an increase next year (we’ll see how employment impacts the number too)?
If there is anything that disappoints me about this list is that, again, there is only one African film (a short) featured this year and one from Latin America (Roma). There used to be a handful of classic African films on Netflix, but Netflix’s recent moves to emphasize television and its Netflix originals has blocked off that possibility. So here’s hoping in 2019 there will be much more representation from Africa and Latin America - not only among short films, but in features especially.
For all those who participated and supported the Movie Odyssey in any way - by reading, liking, commenting on, or reblogging a write-up; talking with me about movies we’ve seen; or even sitting down with me to watch something... none of this possible without you. So all of you have my thanks. The Movie Odyssey continues, as always. Onward to 2019.
As many of you know, all ratings are based on my imdb rating and half-points are always rounded down. My interpretation of that ratings system can be found here. A 6/10 is considered the borderline between “passing” and “failing”. Feature-length narrative films, serials, documentaries, and short films are rated within their respective spectrums. Here is the list... beginning with Disney and ending with Disney.

Occupation: Student/Reptile&Spider Breeder
Family: Agnieszka and Aleksander Nightfall (parents), little sister Michaela and big brother (actually cousin) Robert. All of them live in Poland.
Hobby: This “little” bat is a big bookworm. She reads everything she can get her wings on, but she prefers fantasy over other genres. Zoe also loves all types of mythology, as she kinda studies it, with Norse mythology in the first place. When she doesn’t read anything in her free time, she watches a lot of movies and listens to music. Very often, Zoe loses herself in the music and plays it so loud that angry neighbors come knock on her door. She feels very embarrassed and kindly apologizes. She not only listens to music, she also sings. In her past, she was attending music school. Unfortunately, because of a panic attack in front of the big crowd on stage, she must give up her dreams of becoming a musical actress. Even after this, Zoe still practices singing and playing the violin, but never performs for anyone. Since her childhood, this bat has an enormous interest in reptiles and spiders. When she was 10, her cousin convinced Zoe’s parents to let her have her first snake, a little corn snake that she named Tom. When it comes to stuff she loves, Zoe becomes biggest fangirl of all time. Remember this thing about listening music so loud that is annoys others? Yeah it is not only one times when this bat is loud. Zoe is huge gamer girl and plays every kind of games. Computer games, card games, board games? She is really crazy about that stuff. Also this girl plays a lot of RPG session where she loves to be a Dungeon Master. One more thing she adores is flying high above the ground. Everything seems so small then and she doesn’t feel so small herself.
Personality: When alone or surrounded only by strangers, she is really shy and silent, usually walking with her headphones on, cut off from the world. However, if she is with her friends, Zoe automatically changes by 180°. She becomes more confident, happy and easy-going. Most of her relationships with friends are love-hate rivalries when they exchange sarcastic comments, trying to beat each other in arguments or small competitions. She is very open for new acquaintanceship, but only if the other side makes a move first. Don’t misunderstand though! Even if Zoe is very shy around strangers, that doesn’t mean she can’t stand up for herself. She hates injustice and seeing how stronger bully weaker. This bat will not stand by when something bad (in her opinion) happens. Usually, she tries to solve problems peacefully but… Yeah, an even bigger problem is her short fuse. And when she snaps? Oh boy… “Did you ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?” If not, then now is your chance. Imagine a furious ball of claws, fangs, fur and wings. This lady doesn’t care then if she should or shouldn’t fight. She just attacks with all her fury, even if the enemy is a lot bigger than her. Because of her fear of performance, she has a lot of self-doubt. She also never shows that she feels bad and very often lies about little things. However, in the end, Zoe is very caring for what is close to her and she quickly creates a strong bond. If that bond is broken, she falls into a depressed state for a long time. Last problem with her is that Zoe is very ambitious and very often tries to do more than she is actually capable off. Plus, she is very messy person and that always makes things harder for her.
Bio:
~General Story~
Zoe was born in Poland, but a lot of her family lives in India from where the Indian flying fox comes. Her parents were also both born in Poland, so Zoe views herself as a polish girl and has a strong connection with her country. Yet, her great-great-grandmother Rúna passed down some of Indian things and thanks to that,  Zoe could almost fluently speak Hindi for some time. When Rúna passed away because of cancer, Zoe was so sad that she tried to get rid of her grief by forgetting completely about her great-great-grandmother. Since then, her Hindi has become a little rusty and she can’t speak it anymore, but she can kinda understand it. It all happened before Zoe turned 7 years old. And for these 7 years, you could tell that this little bat was… a rather energetic child. Her mother worked at kindergarten and she taught Zoe’s class. Zoe never was too much of a social kid. She learned writing and reading rather fast, because she just liked it, but that made some other children look at her weirdly. That was a cause of some bad behavior by Zoe. Here’s one example. She once came back from kindergarten with a big black dot stick to her shirt for bad behavior and when her parents asked Zoe why she got this, she calmly and with full satisfaction said: “I spit Andrzej in the face.” Even with such behavior, she has her group of friends and she was pretty happy. Eventually, when she started her school, she became a little outcast and yet, she became a lot more calm. Classes bored her, because she mostly learned basic stuff so fast that she didn’t have much to do during lessons. Usually, she’d start reading then and teachers didn’t like that very much. Her love for book, studying and her rather short height were most of the reasons for bullying her at school. Sometimes, she just couldn’t take it anymore and just snaps. One time, some male weasel from her class didn’t want to stop bothering her during breaks. He always followed her and said: “You are not allowed to read.”. Zoe couldn’t take it anymore, so she just hit him with book she was holding in her wings that moment. That was “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” and that thing is huge, so it hurt a lot. That was just one situation and there were plenty more. Once, she almost got in lot of trouble when she was defending her friend. At the canteen, she stabbed a wolf with a fork when he was aggressive towards her friend. Things in 6th grade were so bad that her mental state started to show in her physical appearance too when she lost some of her fur because of the stress. Fortunately, Zoe graduated school with the highest marks possible, even with her mental breakdown in 6th grade. The music school that Zoe attended was a big help for her mental state, as she could do what she loved and nobody judged her for that. She also had a very nice instrument teacher that helped Zoe raise her confidence a little higher. Middle school was rather normal and a pretty happy time for the female bat. Because she lived in little town, moving from one school to another wasn’t that hard, as the same mammals that were with her in her old school, were in that school as well. The good news for her was that most of her not so nice classmates were in sport class, so she didn’t need to have any contact with them. Months were passing and everything was good except for one thing… After years of friendship, Zoe started to remark that her best friend wasn’t as much of a friend as she thought. The relationship that she had with that mammal was toxic, abusive and totally messed up. The ginger bat, with help of her other, real friends, found the strength to end this friendship with the toxic mammal. She sometimes still feel guilty for it, even if it wasn’t her fault. After graduating from middle school with great grades, she start her math-IT-class in one of the best high school in Toruń. That was also around the time when she stopped attending music school. After lot of hard work and surprise, she managed to graduate school with decent and someone could even say good grades. After that, she chose to study outside the country and move from Poland to the USA, even if she felt a little homesick immediately after leaving her family house. She bought a little apartment from the money she had earned from her business and after that, she started her main study.
~Additional yet important story~
When Zoe was 10, she got her first snake. A corn snake which she named “Tom”. That’s how her breeding hobby/business started. Years pass and Zoe learned more and more about reptiles, not just snakes. She also started to breed spiders. When she was 18, she opened her little reptile shop and started to sell some of reptiles that she had bred. However, she was always very careful about to whom she sold her little friends. Before any transaction is made, Zoe must be 100% sure that her little scaly babies go to a good home. When she moved to the USA, she have enough money to move her little business with her.
Notes:
*Zoe can, like any other bats, fly and she loves doing that.
*Her second and third name are named after her great-great-grandmothers from both sides.
*She is crazy about bubble tea, especially with tapioca.
*Unlike others of her kind she likes to eat citrus fruits, but it sometimes makes her sick if she eat too much.
*She’s had her 3 earnings since she was 8 years old.
*Knows 5 languages on different levels, but is mostly capable of understanding them. Now she’s trying to learn her 6th language.
*Zoe is short-sighted, but she could live without her glasses. She only wears them to not worsen the state of her eyes.
*Hates bat stereotypes and hisses furiously when she hears one.
*Her favourite pet is 21ft long reticulated python that she named “Sunrise”.
*Hates to be in charge of the group.
*Loves to stay up late at night and then she looks like death during her study.
*Her relation with her younger sister is rather rough and these two just can’t understand each other.
*Hates most types of sports, but there are few exceptions. When she wanted to have good grades for P.E. at her old schools, Zoe tried some sports and found them very fun. For quite a time, the bat did gymnastics, dancing and ice skating. However, it was never professional and she did it just for building confidence just like when she was taking lessons at the music school. From time to time, Zoe likes to do little parkour around town. She also dances quite often, usually when she sings.
*Her favourite kind of games are platform games and J-RPGs.
*When she takes part in RPG-sessions, she usually is a Dungeon Master. When she isn’t, she plays as a Rogue, Ranger or Bard.
Ginger Lizards - Reptiles Shop
Zoe runs her own little business: A reptile shop named “Ginger Lizards”. It is located not so far from the middle of Savannah Central. Zoe found a very good place for a decent price, even if she had been waiting for a great location for a long time. Only two mammals work at the shop - Zoe herself and one of her best friends: A jaguar named Altair. He is huge help, especially when it comes to bigger snakes. When you enter the shop, it is your typical reptile shop: some shelves with food, terrariums and other things for reptile keepers. Some terrariums are put in the holes in the walls. In them, you can watch different kinds of snakes, geckos and other lizards. The whole room is set up as a rainforest and monsoon forest biome. In the back of the store are two counters, one for small and medium sized mammals and one for big ones. Both sellers help all kinds of customers, but they feel more comfortable with their own counter. Behind the counters, there is a door that leads to a back room, where all bred reptiles are kept. When customers have decided to buy a pet (after a lot of questions from Zoe, like if they are aware what responsibility it demands and if they have a good living space for keeping such a pet), they could walk along and see all scaly creatures. With help of the two reptile breeders, customers choose a pet and get all additional info that is needed to take care of it. The shop doesn’t have many different species yet, but it is still expanding. For now, you could buy the following species:
Red bamboo rat snake
Diamond Python
Boa constrictor constrictor/Boa constrictor imperator
Corn Snake
Ball Python
Leopard gecko
Crested gecko

2017 Movie Odyssey
So ends the 2017 Movie Odyssey. Last year, I wrote that I did not foresee ever surpassing the 200+ movie mark for a long, long time. But look what happened here (outside of May because that was a hectic time in the Master’s program for sure). The 2017 Movie Odyssey consisted of 232 films - 180 feature-length films and fifty-two shorts. A century of filmmaking was covered this year, from 1917 to 2017. If I do have one regret this year... it’s that African films were not featured this year (due to availability issues and me not having enough money; I tend to watch things legally if possible). I hope to assuage that next year for a more representative Movie Odyssey.
For all of you out there who supported the Movie Odyssey in your own ways – whether reading, liking, commenting, or reblogging a write-up or sitting down with me to a new movie or talking to me about any movie... my thanks to all of you. None of this possible without you, and I hope you find that, through this blog, classic movies seem more approachable and welcoming and you are inspired to see some and learn about them yourself. A Happy New Year to all, and I’ll see you for the 2018 leg of the Movie Odyssey very soon (oh boy the Winter Olympics and World Cup are gonna chip away at the final count next year)!
As many know, all ratings are based on my imdb rating and half-points are always rounded down. My interpretation of that ratings system can be found here. A 6/10 is considered the borderline between “passing” and “failing”. Feature-length narrative films, short films, and documentaries are rated within their respective spectrums.

“Down By The Bay” Part 2. (Fictional Love Series)
(It’s a cool Friday evening in March. I’m basking in the brisk breeze on this beautiful, spring day at the the park on Main St. Daphne.
The weather in Alabama can be hot enough to wear for flip flops and a few hours later it’s snow boot weather. Im captivated by my new read written by Infinite Waters.
Listening to the laughter from a little girl’s birthday party held under the pavilion. Balloons popping and the tune from the happy birthday song being played on a violin. She managed to get cake icing all over her monogrammed birthday dress.
It bring back childhood memories for me. Watching children play always put me in a happy place, especially when I’m having a stressful day.
Coming to this park helps to relax my mind before a big show.
I guess I better head home to get dressed so I won’t be late.
I’m looking at the caller ID as the my cell phone ring.)
“Well hello Hyrim. Are you excited about performing your new spoken word piece tonight? ”
Hyrim answered, “Yes. I’m headed there now.”
“I’m on my way to, I’m packing up my new shipment of dashiki dresses and African art. I think it’s going to sell good at the show tonight.”
“I’m going to do a new poem tonight as well. It was inspired by a old friend I ran into a few weeks ago.”
“Ok then Queen sounds like love is in the air.” Hyrim said with laughter in his tone.“
(I just arrived at the Poetry Den in Fairhope. India Arie song “Brown Skin” is setting the tone. The lights are deemed with candle lights setting the vibe just right.)
“Thank you Shanarian for setting up everything for my art display.”
“You’re welcome welcome sis!”
“I have to hurry and arrange the open mic list because it’s almost time to start the show.”
(I’m looking through my emails and making notes in my composition book.)
(My heart is racing fast.)
“Shanarian, after all this time doing poetry I still get nervous before performing a new piece.”
“Queen you are my sister but I don’t understand why you be so nervous, you’re amazing.”
“Thank you for the encouragement Shanarian. I love you sis. I appreciate your support.
"By the way your new blush pink lipstick is banging! You’re always on point with the lipsticks. Shanarian smiles and replies back with a thank you, and yes I know I look cute tonight. Wow sis (I say with a giggle in my voice)
I see you’re feeling yourself tonight. It’s good to have a high view of yourself.
(We both laugh as I began to walk to the stage.)
(Music is turned down low as I walk on the stage.)
"Good evening beautiful people. Welcome to Rhythm & Rhymes Open Mic Show.”
“We have a lot of awesome poets and great comedians on the list for tonight.”
“I’m going to open up with a poem that was inspired by my high school crush that I ran into a few weeks ago.”
(Crowd clapping. I’m taking a deep breath. Now its silent.)
“I titled this poem "I’m longing for what we never had.”
“I get lost in thought thinking of you and what we never had. Maybe our paths will cross again in perfect timing.”
“As for now, I’m missing the romantic getaways we use to talk about but never took, to Jamaica and Hawaii, where we hold hands on the beach walking through the sand.”
“Enjoying the way the water feels between our toes. As the wind blows, we're captivated in every second of our stroll.”
“I’m missing the spiritual adventure to Egypt and Israel we never took. Surrounded by all of that knowledge I’m sure our souls would’ve been shook.”
“I’m missing the late night talks we never had.”
“I’m imagining a spring Saturday with picnics in the park on the green grass, as I enthusiastically laugh at all of your jokes.”
“No matter how bad our day may go, when our souls meet we create a glow.”
“I miss the first argument we never had. I know that the make up session would’ve been a blast. With me role playing, as I sing Etta James "At Last.”
“This may sound like a silly, high school girl’s fancy dream, but I know that in reality our spirits are meant to be.”
“I guess one day we will just have to see if the universe connects our journey.”
“If not, Erykah Badu said it best in her song "I guess I’ll see you next lifetime.”
“Our connection is so strong. Maybe when we fall into a deep sleep our spirits have meet in another dimension.”
“When our energy collides, earth is not strong enough to contain the power that God brings between us.”
“As for now I have my thoughts that I will use for the positive. Imagining you holding me as I fall asleep with my ear pressed against your heartbeat is my favorite tune you see.”
“I miss the massages I never had a chance to give you. The candlelight meals, sitting by the fireplace I never cooked for you.”
“The passionate love we never had a chance to make. The future marriage that hasn’t took place yet would’ve been great. Maybe it’s not to late.”
“As for now, I’m thankful to God for my imagination.”
“I’m missing what we never had. Thinking to myself, maybe just maybe, we will be like Darius and Nina in the movie Love Jones connected at last.”
“Until then I’m longing for what we never had.”
“Thank you.”
(Crowd clapping and snapping fingers).
“Are y'all ready for our first open mic artist!”
(Crowd scream yes!)
“Put your hands together and give a clap to Hyrim Ether!”
(Crowd clapping as Hyrim walk to the stage. He grabs the mic.)
(I’m noticing the look in Hyrim’s eyes as if he knows he’s going to rip this show tonight.)
“Walking off the stage I noticed a pair of perfect, white teeth glistening at me. ”
“He has a smile that will make the angels sing.”
“The candle light is reflecting and enhancing his coffee-brown skin. It looks like it’s been kissed by the sun.”
“The blinking stage lights is blinding me. I’m straining to see. I blink my eyes harder to gather my sight all the way back. My vision slowly comes back to me.”
“Oh my God!”
(I just noticed that it’s Darren.)
“My heart rate is elevating! My palms are sweating!”
“Thoughts rambling through my mind. I know he just heard every word from my poem.”
“I bared my soul on that stage. I wonder what he’s thinking? I hurry and gain my composure as he walks closer to me.”
“I’m trying not to blush hard. It’s not working. My smile is too powerful to submerge.”
“Hey Queen Ashley.” Darren speaks with his proper, educated tone. I loved that poem, he added as we embraced. “
"I wish I was that special guy you spoke of. I wonder who he can be? He inquired in a joking manner.”
(I’m laughing)
“Darren thank you. It’s good to see that you are still in town. How long will you be staying? Darren replied "I’m staying for good.”
“Wow are you sure you want to come back to this small town?” (He stands close as our bodies can be.)
(Looking deep into my eyes)
“He states that "New York was cool, but it was missing something. Hopefully I can get it back now that I’m here.”
“I’m working on a new development in downtown Mobile now. Maybe once you finish hosting we can grab a bite to eat at our old hangout spot, the Daphne Waffle House.”
“Sure, sounds like fun D I answered as I’m walking off, rushing back to the stage trying not to fall in my new heels.”
(Crowd clapping loud for Hyrim as he walks off the stage. The tenth open mic poet has performed. The crowd is eagerly waiting for me to introduce the featured poet.
“It’s a big crowd tonight because Steelwaters a local poet from Fairhope is in the building. He is the featured poet tonight. He started poetry here in Fairhope over ten years ago and the poetry movement has expanded.”
“Put your hands together for the one and only Steelwaters the poet! ”
(He’s taking his time walking to the stage confidently, with his head held high. Long dreads, skin the color of burnt brass, and looking like black Jesus in the flesh.
The crowd is screaming out the titles of their favorite poems by him and clapping as he take the mic. Thirty minutes has passed.
Steelwaters just finished performing. The crowd is standing and clapping.)
“I’m so glad the show is finally over. Darren I have to do a wardrobe change before I leave. I will hurry. I exclaimed as I ran to the dressing room. ”
“Darren answers saying "Ok I will be waiting outside.”
(He’s admiring the African art paintings as he make his way out the door. The walls are cover with culture and history about our African ancestors.
I finally make my way to the car, can’t seem to pack my African art in the car fast enough.
Darren chatting with his old high school classmates in the parking lot. He notice me struggling and comes and help me pack it all in.)
“New Edition old jam "candy girl” is playing on 93 blx radio station. I’m thinking about all the fun times we use to have as I follow him to the Waffle House.)
(Sitting and eating at Waffle House. The waitress finally bring our food out. I don’t think I will ever get use to the sound of plates breaking in the cooking area. People are starting to flood in now after hanging out. It’s getting noisy.
Madonna "Like A Virgin” is playing on the jukebox. I’m digging for coins in my purse. I want to hear Whitney Houston “I believe the children are our future”, when this song goes off.
They still have the same songs they had when we use to hang out here after the high school games.
I might want to play Cyndi Lauper “Girl Just Want To Have Fun” and Janet Jackson “Rhythm Nation”.
I’ll have my own blast from the past music concert up in here tonight. I’m leaving from the jukebox. I’m headed back to the table with Darren.)
(Darren notice me walking back to the table and puts his cell back in his pocket.
He’s starring at me with his dreamy eyes as I make my way back to the table.)
“Darren begins to say, "Ashley I have really enjoyed catching up with you, but you owe me a date at the Mayday pier, since you stood me up in 1996.”
“Darren you are a mess. I don’t remember standing you up. I don’t think I would’ve did that.”
“The only way you can make it up to me is by letting me take you now.”
“Darren are you serious? It’s 2am!”
“Darren nodded his head up and down saying "Yes I’m serious.”
“Ok D for you the Mayday beach it is. I will leave my car here and ride with you.”
(He pays for food at the register. Then he head back to our table to leave a tip.
We exchanged have a goodnight with the Waffle House staff as we make our way out the door.)
To Be Continued!
